    Great comparison with well picked examples, Thanks for the showcase!
    The CPU had to be modified to be able to run at 2x clock rate and because of that i cannot make it a runtime option like in the other cores i made. Therefore the core is only a toy to play around. If it doesn't work for some games, unfortunatly i cannot do much. But it often works for games like Re-Volt with notorious slowdowns and that was the main goal. Have fun!

      There is no "best" way to play any video game console. Some people like myself would prefer how the "slideshow" looks because that's what I remember when I had the console in the late 90s. Sure, the Mister is technically superior on a hardware level, but that isn't the point. If you're counting frames as your main source of enjoyment, maybe question what your ultimate motives are here. You probably just are in the hobby of specs, not the games themselves.

    • @VideoGameEsoterica
      @VideoGameEsoterica  2 года назад +1

      Yes some games tie in game speed to frame rate. That’s why some games go slow motion when the frame rate dips. A lot of times physics are tied to the frame rate and you see games run faster / slower. Strider at the wrong speed is a ton of fun

  • @ytjaymz-x
    @ytjaymz-x 2 года назад +1

    Thanks for the video! Some feedback: at 3:00 you don't want a framerate hovering between 30 and 60fps. You want a steady 30 or a steady 60 because of judder/improper framepacing issues. 40fps on a 60hz display looks horrible. 40fps running at 120hz would be great, because it divides evenly (just like some PS5 games offer nowadays).

    • @VideoGameEsoterica

    • @VideoGameEsoterica
      @VideoGameEsoterica  2 года назад +2

      The arcade boards generally feature a combination of the following: more RAM and higher clocked CPU/GPU chips. So knowing MiSTer can handle 1 of those two components at a higher clock is promising

    This is great. I always wondered if consoles could be virtually improved in FPGA. Would it be possible to, for example, virtually improve the CPU and sprite processing in the NES core? It would be neat to see older NES titles run at higher fps and with no flicker. I know there are some options in engine for this but could better hardware be slotted into the current FPGA core?

    • @VideoGameEsoterica
      @VideoGameEsoterica  2 года назад +1

      There is a flickering option for NES already but yes generally any of the cores could get an effective clock speed change. How they would affect software is another question

    • @AC-cg6op
      @AC-cg6op Год назад +1

      I think the way NES games (and games for most 2d consoles) are programmed, cpu clock speed ups would result in the entire game moving faster rather than just smoother since sprite actions are all tied to the CPU clock rather than time. So it would end up working like the turbo button in the GBA core - smoother and faster at the same time.

  • @LeftyPem
    @LeftyPem 2 года назад

    Looks like the 2x core also speeds up the in-game timer in the first NFS example. Apparently that clock is cpu calculated. Doesn’t happen in the 2nd one.

    • @VideoGameEsoterica
      @VideoGameEsoterica  2 года назад

      Yes in code it’s interesting to see what’s connected to cpu clock cycles / timings and what is not. Some games will use it for the timer. Strider 2 uses it for in-game engine speed. Others don’t seem to tie much of anything to it

    As someone who hasn't made the jump to FPGA yet and who still uses DuckStation, I am very fond of modest CPU boosting from 100% (stock) to 185% or so. In certain frame-capped titles like Tomb Raider, whose game logic is tied to 33.33 MHz, hitting 200% and above doubles the frame rate to 60 fps but runs all the animations and physics calculations at 2x as well. At 185%, everything stays locked at 30 fps but with none of the awful slow downs inherent to a stock 100% clock speed (I'm looking at you, The Cistern). I wonder if it would be possible to implement something similar on an FPGA core. Maybe a 61.66 (or flat 60) MHz mode alongside the 2x 66.66 MHz one.

    Chrono cross is pretty weird when it comes to OC the CPU. The intro screen is always the example but chunks of the game (I think the battles?) are tied to the framerate so increasing it causes speed up. Theoretically sure you could pop in a diff value for clock speeds (in reality it’s not just altering a number) but that doesn’t automatically mean it will work. @@VideoGameEsoterica what's the difference speeds and which is better to use?

    • @VideoGameEsoterica
      @VideoGameEsoterica  Год назад

      Honestly it’s game to game dependent what works better in the standard core vs the 2x core and that mostly comes down to what games have a locked frame rate vs unlocked

    how do we get the 2x core?

  • @NickEnchev
    @NickEnchev Год назад

    Vast majority of games for the PS1 weren't developed to be able to run on higher clock speeds. They don't have fixed-timestep game loops, so you'll just end up playing games that run too fast.

    Whats the benefit over a software emulator?

    • @VideoGameEsoterica
      @VideoGameEsoterica  2 года назад

      Honestly software emulation via DuckStation is V competent as well. FPGA can run instructions simultaneously where software emulation is sequential. That’s one large benefit depending on your system

    Here’s an interesting video explaining some gamedev theory behind why game physics and frame rate are sometimes tied (towards the end) ruclips.net/video/YJB1QnEmlTs/видео.html

      Fun. I’ll check it out in a bit. I mean it makes sense physics are tied to frame rate in some instances
