Fun fact! If you calculate the kinetic energies of those throws, the heavier disc has way more of it. The formula is E = 0.5*mass*velocity^2. Having energy is important because the opposing forces (such as drag) has to get rid of that energy in order to stop the disc, so having more kinetic energy might be more important than having more speed. Then again the heavier disc also needs more energy to convert to gravity's potential energy(go upwards), so the only way to know for sure in the end is to try it out in the field :)
Great video, Ezra! The fact that you get to those speeds is mind blowing! 🤯 would love to see a follow-up video of you comparing the actual flight of the discs (maybe the same mold) at different weights and speeds to see how they compare to one another on the course!

I'm old, so the Valkyrie is my main driver. I bag 173gm, 167gm, 160gm and 149gm. They are chosen according to wind and the amount of desired turn. A tailwind drive with the 149gm goes a long way for my skill level. I'd try to find a Nuke in the ~ 150gm range and give it a try.
Hi, Ezra. I was entertained! I'm really intrigued by the weight-speed ratio and finding out how far 2 mph translates to on the field. Would love to see the Malta distances 165g vs 175g in another video, with the 100g Cyclone(?) Too. Keep throwing hard!
As a result of this video it would be interesting to see if these discs also fly farther and with which flight pattern they fly thrown at the same angle and height. Thanks for the content ✌🏼
Good to know even pros with great form feel it in the arm after hard throws, I was worried lol. Done throwing hard for the next 2 years lmao. (Just started playing this year)
This is actually a good argument for max weight discs, except maybe in a tailwind. If you do the math you find that Ezra is actually imparting less energy to the lighter discs (much less to the cyclone). This means that while it will come out of the hand faster, the same amount of wind resistance is going to slow it down more quickly. In short, you will get more turn, a quicker fade, and a generally less controllable flight. For a weaker player, the speed differences may be greater and that would make it easier to justify the lighter disc.
Yeah I'd like to see some flights out of them. Like, the cyclone would be impossible to use in a gentle breeze, but does the 10 gram difference of the lighter Malta make a difference? If anything, it could be helpful for us newer guys who can't throw farther than 250ft yet. Maybe I should be using a slightly lighter disc?
@@fallofshadows2209 I can throw my 149g gstar katana further than any other disc in my bag. I think once you can throw faster though, the heavier discs are better as they carry better towards the end of their flight while the lighter discs will stall out.

Once I asked Eagle about max radar speeds couple of years ago and if I remember correctly he said Simon has 99 mph and Eagle 98 mph. I have to say that Ezra's throw is more like a golf throw and Simon's max is might have been 360 or a throw that clearly looks like pure smash and not a golf throw. I wrote to Ezra to his previous radar test that try light-weight and preferably putter and he said he will try it. It is a known fact that light disc with a deeper rim is the best for radar shots. compromise of speed for stability and likely also any wind effects. that light one will get blown all over by any wind. I'm curious how the full flight(if possible) is with that light cyclone.
I did the math and you're still putting the most energy into the heaviest disc, even if it is the slowest of the bunch, and by far the least energy into the lightest one. In Joules, from heaviest: 103.7 vs 102.9 vs 78.7. With aerodynamic resistance being higher at higher speeds, the lighter discs would spend more kinetic energy per distance travelled even if they had the same amount to begin with and would fly a shorter distance (assuming disc glide/stability/speed is equal). At least I would think so, correct me if I'm wrong. So stick to max weight is my two cents :)

As a 54YO male with a noodle arm all my life, I started with some lighter discs around 150-167G. I found that I could throw them about 50 feet further than at 175g (at 6200 ft elevation). The downside though is that I couldn't feel the disc rip off my fingers the same way and it was a lot harder to get good accuracy. Lately I'm throwing 167-175g discs as I can throw them just as far with better accuracy. As someone else commented -- with your arm speed, I'd love to see the 145g, 155g, 165g, 175g classes of discs put to the distance test. Will the lighter speeds really go farther? I throw a 154g and 175g Diamond and they go about the same distance.
I think the difference will increase along with throwers max distance, if that makes sense. I throw 270-300 so my 150g Boss is giving me around 20-30 feet more, similarly I think if someone rips 600 it could go 40-60 farther. I say 'could' because most likely wind, angles and fade will affect it more - over the longer flight - and overall distance will be similar, just different speed curve.
The speed gun would record faster speeds with lighter discs in the forehand throw, but due to turbulence from off axis torque in a forehand throw, the heavier discs would actually go farther than lighter discs would. That's why world records in forehand drives are with around 165 gram discs as opposed to much lighter 135 - 157 gram discs in the backhand throws.
Would find it much more interesting to see what that translates to in actual distance, assuming you could find a 104 gram disc that doesn't just turn over 10 feet out.

I was doing some of that this off-season but then I got a finger issue because of it. I'd like to get back into it for sure. I actually 5 cyclones for that purpose mainly. Hey it works for Bryson
I think the 175g would still go farther. The 175g at 77mph has kinetic energy of 103.6770 joules. The 165g at 79mph has 102.8968. More kinetic energy = more distance.
Throwing into a net will allow the speed to be calculated but not the flight which is where the overall distance comes from but yes you can obviously throw a lighter item faster than a heavier one. Go toss a 10 lb weight and a 50 lb weight and they won't be the same. You have to have the balance of flight stability and weight. Physics and stuff you know.
Speed is one thing, but isn't kinetic energy what matters? His 175g @ 77mph has a KE of 104 joules, while the 105g @ 87mph = 79 joules. Difference could be fatigue, I would have guessed the KE would be the same assuming the same thrower/ identical technique.
I messaged you on facebook about getting the code if it still works, I'm looking to get one of these radars. Do you think the smart coach is worth the extra $100? I'll probably be using the gun a lot. Thanks
Id rather see david wiggins throw a light disc and see if he can match simons old speed records he throws a max weight boss 85 mph and in an interview said those two were always within a few feet in most competitions
Don't try too hard and it seems the discs go faster with great technique but once great effort is applied it seems the discs can't go faster also technique seems to be off as well. I know from my own tutorials Thanks for the video
High school physics teacher hear to tell you that a lighter disc will not necessarily go further. Even though it may come out of you the hand faster, because there is less weight in the rim it will lose its rotation faster than its heavier counterpart. This is because it has a lower moment of inertia. The moment of inertia of a disc also has a huge impact on why drivers go further than putters (besides just the fact that the narrow profile is more arrow dynamic)

I might start it up a couple weeks before worlds to try to give myself a chance at the distance competition lol
I think the 175g would still go farther. The 175g at 77mph has kinetic energy of 103.6770 joules. The 165g at 79mph has 102.8968. More kinetic energy = more distance.
79.4129 joules for that 105g disc. It would also lose energy when it inevitably becomes a throwler and hits the planet.
Z lite nuke OS would do the trick! I have one.
I tried this, I was able to increase my speed forehand more than backhand when using light discs.
Wanted the “back to the future” 88 MPH
Better throw a cyclone in the bag for super uphill holes
Production tip, don’t have the shadow of your camera in the frame, hope that helps.
No one cares..
Ezra Aderhold : half man , half amazing 🤩
😂
Good thing you didn't hit 88MPH or that disc could have been lost in time!
You are throwing the lighter discs faster, but I wonder what their flight will be compared to the others.
We need a cyclone only round
Speed is one thing, but isn't kinetic energy what matters? His 175g @ 77mph has a KE of 104 joules, while the 105g @ 87mph = 79 joules. Difference could be fatigue, I would have guessed the KE would be the same assuming the same thrower/ identical technique.
Do a 360 learning video with Simon!
That 84mph was about 3 inches from missing that net 🤣 still jealous
Did you say radar or waydar? Did you also sought you saw a puddy cat as well?
some 13 speed discs would likely register higher on the radar gun...???
Maybe that's another video to find out🧐
Kim possible ringtone?
So you are saying I should totally get a 155g Crank, and go for it?
What radar gun are you using?
While Ezra was throwing the Cyclops, I went back and forth thinking I hope he hits 90 and I hope he doesn't get hurt.
I messaged you on facebook about getting the code if it still works, I'm looking to get one of these radars. Do you think the smart coach is worth the extra $100? I'll probably be using the gun a lot. Thanks
Eagle mcmahon for the next speedgun challenge!
Id rather see david wiggins throw a light disc and see if he can match simons old speed records he throws a max weight boss 85 mph and in an interview said those two were always within a few feet in most competitions
The Irony of the Malta disc, is the Malta the island is 9 Miles wide, so you can probably Par 3 it.... Its also ironic we don't have disc golf here
I want to see yall do 360s
I need to learn! I've tried before and kind of tweaked my elbow lol, I need to be careful 😂
Affect* ;)
Good stuff tho!
Verb not a noun. This title is semi-pro.
Is there a minimum weight for pdga approved frisbees
Don't try too hard and it seems the discs go faster with great technique but once great effort is applied it seems the discs can't go faster also technique seems to be off as well.
I know from my own tutorials
Thanks for the video
I think a 1g nuke would create a sonic BOOM!
See how far they go next.
"That makes no sense" lol 😆🤣 yessir. Disc golf makes no sense.. Slow = far I'm told but it's hard to go slow and still quick, haha.. ayeee yai yai
A Cyclone? I thought you were all Discraft now? 😜
I bag a couple cyclones and a typhoon still. Discraft started making those molds a long time ago and when something works you stay with it.
At 77 mph that Malta is turning over, no matter what the numbers say.
I'm glad you teach physics and not English.
Arrow dynamic?
If it had missed the net, it probably would have gone to the earth's orbit.
Can we see you throw the cyclone in a field
