Great video and explanation! I’ve felt something like this and seen similar videos but this clarified it visually for me a little better. Going to try it today!
This works. There’s a YT channel where the guy has developed an entire system that he sells that teaches you this. He has drills for it, etc. he calls it the slingshot method.
Yes this helped to pull the disc in and then out . I can get consistent snap on the disc and I think its because the motion helps to lead with the elbow. Half the snap seems like its in the elbow and the other half in the wrist. I do my normal reach back but then pull the disc in first. Thx for the tip.

Slingshot Disc Golf says something along those lines, instead of pulling straight line through the power pocket like has been taught forever, the disc moves more like a V, coming into the chest and back out.
It do move in a V, but it can also move in a pretty straight line if you've got flexibility in the hips for it. I was watching Eagle reach out, and his hips were turned so much it looked more like he was reaching back, then when he spins, its getting pulled along a straight line into his chest, then out again along the same line. I've been working a lot on getting my legs and hips into my spin and have been noticing my flexibility is getting better and has been throwing off my aim and finding my disc is moving more and more along a straight line while going out in out.
@@DiscManiac28 the first time I saw Rickey and Paul in person I could not believe how much spin their drives have. It’s insane. They go 450’ + and when they land it looks like a spinning top twirling around on the ground. I think my spin stops at about 90% of the throw 😂
I'm going to give this a try. I just started playing a little over a month ago, and when I go out playing with experienced players I get a little frustrated that I am always throwing really short compared to them. I need all the help I can get to build up that distance as much as I can!
@@DiscManiac28I was throwing earlier and this technique really helped my form. I had no rounding and was hitting ~250' consistently. I've really improved significantly from throwing just over 150' back in late February, when I first started. This is another tool in the toolbag to help me along. Thanks a ton!!
Possibly, I’ll have to check it out on their channel, I know I’ve seen drew Gibson in slo Mo from above and he goes out, in and back out, I think it was on overthrow channel
I just watched this video and have my own experience with the technique you show. I've only been playing a couple of months and i'm a big guy (6'3/240) with a big chest and broad shoulders, so a lot of the techniques i've seen do not work well for me because I need more space in the front to clear my chest. Rounding is a big issue for me because of this. I throw stand still exclusively because it reduces the variables that could go wrong for me. Through trial and error (and a lot of frustration), I found that reaching out like you demonstrate is about the only way I can throw with any accuracy. I see the pros almost reaching back to 5 o clock and at the very last second of their pull, they bring everything together in the power pocket. I can't do that lol. I reach back to around 7:00-7:30 and pull diagonally into my chest before continuing to pull straight through on the line between my front foot and target. It's accurate enough. I just need to build more distance. My best throws (with mids) are only 230', and that's pretty disappointing considering how big I am, but I guess size and strength only matter as much as you can direct them into the throw mechanics. Great video and if I hadn't worked through some of these issues already, this would've fixed most of my rounding issues! I wish I would've found it 2 months ago!
Thanks for feed back, yea with your size you should be able to throw further for sure, you’re right it’s all in the mechanics but you have the frame to throw far
Maniac, this looks very interesting. I'm gonna give it a try. I volunteered at the Beaver State Fling this year. I followed the lead card. I was completely blown away with the spins Garrett, Calvin, and Eagle had on the end of 500 foot teeshots. Their disc's would spin on the grass at about 500 rpm. It was unbelievable. I do think you are on to something. You seem like a really good guy. What part of the country do you live. Best regards, Norm from tigard oregon.
your 4th shot looked to be released at 10.30 so that was great but still try what i suggested where you dont actively use your arm to slingshot but let your other side of your body make the slingshot work and only actively use that wrist on the OUT part of the swing and obviously follow through on the same angle for FLIGHT INTEGRITY .. but youve learned the secret of the slingshot no doubt now just time to perfect it which is the journey im on as well! i can hyzer flip a destroyer to about 430ft i can get it to go 30ft further if thrown flat etc.
I believe both Robbie C and Josh at Overthrow talk about the angle of the disc in relation to your body in your backswing. I talk about it on my channel some as well. I found that most of my spin comes maintaining strict wrist curl through the throw and not actively whipping the disc with my wrist. That's the great thing about disc golf. So many approaches. I'll give it a shot and see what happens. Thanks for the vid.
I remember hearing them say out-in-out but never really gave a number on the clock except 10 o clock on release. I thought I would mention 8 and see if that helped some people out, :)
@@DiscManiac28 Gotcha, you are probably right, They may not be specific. In one of my earlier vids I say a number. So we are better than them....LOL. j/k I love Robbie C and Josh is my coach...hope he doesn't read this.
OK, so you have *almost* come to an independent discovery of what is called "Spin and Throw" form, which is what the pros have been doing for decades - except they add a useless "reachback" which hurts their distance. (This is why Simon doesn't reach back. No need!) In Spin & Throw form, the shoulder does not move in the throwing motion (it only moves after the disc is ejected). It is locked at 90 degrees to the chest - poking straight out in front of you. The upper body motion in a disc golf power shot only involves the elbow and the wrist. The elbow closes automatically as the reverse rotation stops, and the player must close their wrist appropriately (timing!) so that the disc pivots around the wrist and levers out of the hand. And so the disc comes to the left side of the chest (the "power pocket") and then the rotating torso (using your back foot, and turning your toes towards the ground as fast as you possibly can) literally throws your elbow open. No muscles are used to open the elbow or the wrist, and so the ejection point is defined by the form. The arm is used as a genuine whip, and torso rotation rate becomes the single deciding factor in how far you can throw a disc. Head on over to Brad's amazing channel: Spin & Throw. Here is the first of a 40-video playlist which will teach you the heretical science of Spin & Throw. ruclips.net/video/3RQtZooOuTI/видео.html You will throw further, be more accurate, and you won't be exhausted at the end of a big day of disc golf, I guarantee it. This is a non-injurious form you will be able to use into your 80s.
I’ve played with this for flat releases. I’ve found it to be more of a timing thing. It makes sure that the disc sits in front of the trailing arm. Insures that deep pocket. Though really it’s almost always turns into a wide rail but from an upright position (thus flat release). Just my personal findings.
Solid idea. Have not seen the first idea presented quite that way. Like the concept, but gotta make sure the pop isn't my elbow or shoulder on a dry fire ! Eric Oakley form.
@@elliotJones-s4l when you throw a shot and it does exactly what you intended and see the flight of the disc, that’s when I new I was gonna love the game. And that was all she wrote to get me hooked lol
The part where you say holding the disc out in front and pulling it inwards. Paul Mcbeth has talked about that a lot. Its like a figure skaters when they want faster RPM they pull their arms in to speed up. That is what paul McBeth calls the power pocket.
This is a great insight. FYI / history Danny Lindahl covered this in several of his content videos. Another older term for this is the wide rail. Jumping to modern content creators check out sling shot disc golf.

I did a lot of “Stand Stills” trying to keep my weight back slightly but mostly centered and it seemed to help me a lot
Made me think of something to try... Instead of curling my (right handed backhand) throwing wrist anti clockwise on the '8 in' ... I want to try something non-intuitive and try wrist clockwise... and see if (with it loose enough) at the end of the 'IN' I can get it to bounce on the anti-clockwise extremity, giving further clockwise rotation on the 'back to 10' (just an experiment... I don't expect much from it but I need to loosen up...) I need to have a little play at doing near nothing with my outer arm, using my shoulder and elbow to play trebuchet with my outer... because at the mo I think I'm muscling my arm, tensing it up and ruining any hope of passing my current 330ft... so much to think about.. until I don't need to think about it... for me I also found a crow hop was helpful in getting the cross step out of my head... Of course, like so many driving videos forget to mention... actually getting it in the basket outside the 10ft mark is more important than throwing it 400 ft... and I'm so used to hooking in a put with my pig, I'm having to muscle learn how to throw a straight putter... and I keep expecting it to fade in like the pig... sigh. (The pig is fun tho for making these weird "amazing" puts that look high and wide, only for it to turn and stall into the basket at the last minute..... but usually just ends up as a "good upshot" instead of what should be a good put...
I had a problem with being to tight a few years ago it all eventually came together and loosened up, it’s funny you mention putting with a pig, I used to put with a jawbreaker “zone” I did a extreme spin out and the zone worked for me, it was harder at longer distances because of the glide, but great for headwinds. You just found the Matt Orum style. Look up slow motion of him. I use it on shorter drives and mids when I need a nice straight shot. If it works for you keep it up!
whats popping is your fingers snapping together but this IS the secret to disc golf.. theres an old video that teaches this drill Dan Beto 2.0 i think its called but now that youve got the slingshot or snap instead of actively using your arm to make it slingshot now instead use your back leg "by turning in" and off arm "by pushing down" let that intiate and sling your arm and only at the laaaast second actively use your wrist on the throwing arm and thats how you get effortless 400+ shots imo..
I believe Slingshot and Overthrow refer to this as "out-in-out". DG Spindoctor also has mentioned this to prevent rounding like you mentioned. I tried this style of "reach out" with my tech disc and immediately saw +150-200 rpm. Hitting just under 1300 and my normal is about 1100.
your third shot from my view looked to be released at 11:30 still rounded imo likely bcuz on the outward part of throw you use your elbow and the elbow shouldnt be used at all
All good points, I did release the last ones later than 10 for sure, I’m still working on it but I can tell when I do it right, I can for sure feel the snap.
I'm more confused now. A good friend introduced me to disc golf, and I’ve been playing for about a month and a half. Honestly, I struggle with every throw I make, but I'm hooked on the game. I’ve started to understand a lot of the concepts, but one of them is about not "releasing" the disc-it’s supposed to snap. However, you mentioned releasing it at 10, which changes everything. So, should I actually be releasing the disc, or is it supposed to snap out of my hand on its own?
@@Dubergomezfonseca I can see how it can definitely be confusing, it does snap out of the hand some have auditable sound when the disc come out and some don’t but when I’m referring to release point it’s when the disc exits you hand…. Not really manually releasing it it just releases on its own! Does that make sense? I just try to point my hand towards a specific point in time with the force and speed it too much for disc to stay in hand and it should be around 11 o clock
@@DiscManiac28 That makes perfect sense now. I think I've been "releasing" at 12, and yes, I keep hitting the first tree on my right. I do well in open spaces where there are no obstacles, but I’ll keep working on my form and will definitely use your tips. Thank you very much!
@Dubergomezfonseca There are a ton of "gurus" in the disc golf scene on YT. Some have really great advice and some peddle "bro science" that screws your game. I don't know which this guy is, but he says "release at 10 o'clock" and then every throw he makes is released at 12 and 1. Not trying to throw shade but don't tell me one thing then show me another. This exercise may help some figure out how to put spin on the disc but it's really bad form. Your disc should travel in a straight line the entire time you're touching it. Imagine sliding/dragging the disc on a 2x4 aimed where you want it to go. Your goal is for it to leave your hand at the last point it can along that board, whatever "o'clock" that is for you. The release is more about timing. You're "releasing" late due to one or more of a myriad of different reasons but ultimately it boils down to your hand not traveling fast enough to rip the disc from your hand at the desired point. Try this during your next field day: Take your fastest driver, grip the snot out of it and throw it as hard as you can. Then take that same driver, grip it as lightly as you can, and throw it just as hard. You'll notice one releases late, if at all, and the other releases early. Now, your job is to figure out where in between those extremes the disc rips out where you want it to. Your grip strength is going to be different for each shot and is tied to 2 other choices you make: disc choice and how hard you want to throw it. Hope this helps!

your first shot was better actually.. zero pull just arm thus why it flew perfectly straight just not enough height.. second shot you started off correct then pulled and rounded yes and release was closer to 12o clock then 10o clock..
Another thing i dont hear people discussing is the “release” you shouldn’t actually release the disc. It should rip out of your grip. Thats where all the true speed and spin comes from. I call the “release” point or “hit point” the “pinch point”. I started making a conscious effort to pinch and hold a fairly firm grip. Now I understand why taped fingers are a thing. Hope this helps.

I started out playing a few years ago and I could only throw forehand, my back hand was awful. My shoulder and elbow were getting so sore, a had to learn a new way to continue playing. I rarely throw forehand unless I have to now and my body appreciates it.

I like slingshot discgolf learned a lot form him
I think I’ve heard him talk about in and out
Really like what you touched on here! It makes a lot of sense to me
Thanks hope it translates to the course for ya:)
I’ve gotta try this when the weather breaks around here. It’s exactly the move Will makes.
It helped me a lot understanding putting spin on it
@@DiscManiac28 the first time I saw Rickey and Paul in person I could not believe how much spin their drives have. It’s insane. They go 450’ + and when they land it looks like a spinning top twirling around on the ground. I think my spin stops at about 90% of the throw 😂
Nice look at a different approach. Thanks.

@@DiscManiac28I was throwing earlier and this technique really helped my form. I had no rounding and was hitting ~250' consistently. Great video! Overthrow Disc Golf talks about getting into the "deep pocket" I think it's the same concept but with a different approach.
Great Video! I never separated spin and speed. Anxious to give it a try and love the rhyme:)
Thanks, some people have benefited from it, it was a good step for me, hopefully it will be for you too🤞

@@DiscManiac28 oh you’re getting there within 2-3 months for sure.

OK, so you have *almost* come to an independent discovery of what is called "Spin and Throw" form, which is what the pros have been doing for decades - except they add a useless "reachback" which hurts their distance. (This is why Simon doesn't reach back. No need!)
In Spin & Throw form, the shoulder does not move in the throwing motion (it only moves after the disc is ejected).
Here is the first of a 40-video playlist which will teach you the heretical science of Spin & Throw.
ruclips.net/video/3RQtZooOuTI/видео.html
You will throw further, be more accurate, and you won't be exhausted at the end of a big day of disc golf, I guarantee it.
I got ya, I’ve heard someone else talk about a wide rail.. I’m gonna have to look it up
Solid idea. Have not seen the first idea presented quite that way. Like the concept, but gotta make sure the pop isn't my elbow or shoulder on a dry fire ! Eric Oakley form.

The part where you say holding the disc out in front and pulling it inwards. Paul Mcbeth has talked about that a lot. Its like a figure skaters when they want faster RPM they pull their arms in to speed up. That is what paul McBeth calls the power pocket.

I don't expect much from it but I need to loosen up...)
I need to have a little play at doing near nothing with my outer arm, using my shoulder and elbow to play trebuchet with my outer... because at the mo I think I'm muscling my arm, tensing it up and ruining any hope of passing my current 330ft...
so much to think about.. until I don't need to think about it...
for me I also found a crow hop was helpful in getting the cross step out of my head...
I had a problem with being to tight a few years ago it all eventually came together and loosened up, it’s funny you mention putting with a pig, I used to put with a jawbreaker “zone” I did a extreme spin out and the zone worked for me, it was harder at longer distances because of the glide, but great for headwinds. whats popping is your fingers snapping together but this IS the secret to disc golf.. theres an old video that teaches this drill Dan Beto 2.0 i think its called but now that youve got the slingshot or snap instead of actively using your arm to make it slingshot now instead use your back leg "by turning in" and off arm "by pushing down" let that intiate and sling your arm and only at the laaaast second actively use your wrist on the throwing arm and thats how you get effortless 400+ shots imo..
Do u think this would also improve the forehand

@ welcome something that helped me was not over rotating cause I used to always pull it to the right. If your pulling it that could also be a factor.
My video on “slow down your shoulders speed up your arm” may help with that
@Dubergomezfonseca There are a ton of "gurus" in the disc golf scene on YT.
I’ll give it a try
May work for you may not but I hope it helps, it seemed to help me with spin and spacing

That’s funny
A lot of yacking here but nothing specifically about how to get more spin on the disc.
your first shot was better actually.. zero pull just arm thus why it flew perfectly straight just not enough height.. second shot you started off correct then pulled and rounded yes and release was closer to 12o clock then 10o clock..
Umm nah 😂
Thanks but I’ll stick to what people “are” talking about.
Because it’s worked for pros and trainers for decades.
It really should be called the point at which the disc leaves your hand.
Man y'all must have just started. This is common knowledge. Many form videos tell you not to let go and let the disc pull out. You're not a genius. You're not on top a secret. This is common knowledge.
