Good point. You can find the apps mentioned in the podcast on our website: followtheboat.com/the-best-apps-for-sailing-could-save-your-life/ Cheers! Liz🙏
Thanks. I wouldn’t have known where to find the visit. However, on Apple there are a few apps that answer to rainviewer … is there a longer more descriptive name? Thanks. :)
Hi Crew, I'm a solo sailer and use and like Anchor Pro (Anchor lite is just the free version of Anchor Pro), along with the anchor watch on the AIS. The Anchor Pro is right beside my bunk and serves as yet another assist when I'm aiming for a good nights sleep. Yes wind will wake will but will a big tidal change. Helpful vid thanks
What an excellent idea to list these as apps ..as a relatively new cruiser based in Langkawi I have been slowly garnering these apps from fellow sailors, so to have a whole podcast dedicated to the subject was excellent .. many thanks 🙏
I like paper charts ..l remember back in 1989 sailing across the Indian ocean from Australia when the were having war games & the military were screwing around with the GPS satilites...out by 3° in that area....thank God for plotting you coarse on paper charts every hour & open ocean😊
What a great episode; really enjoyed this one! As relatively new cruisers, the information was perfectly timed for us. We are upgrading our electronics and have a couple of questions that we hope you guys can help us with: Firstly, which model and size of B&G plotter do you have below decks? We are considering a stand - alone radar setup, purely for redundancy in case the plotter went awol. Would you consider this overkill? Our 43ft ketch is currently in southern Queensland and we hope to cruise the SW pacific area over the next few years. Please keep up the good work.
Hi Jamie and Liz, have you ever navigated completely old school, eg: paper charts, compass, sextant, lead line, clock? I watch a couple of channels who do both old and modern and it's impressive how close they get. If I ever get to sail I want to learn how.
Hey Gang how are you both.Technology and its gadgets have a special place in the safety and performance of the vessel.Knowing the vessels polars and plugging those stats into the weather routing programs practically guarantees the best possible performance and safety of sailors and vessels.
I have two expensive chart plotters rarely used. My water resistant tablet is easier to make and change tracks and vastly more convenient. But it pays to have a couple of spares as they aren't nearly as robust as the plotters
By the way, that image you have of a boat on a rock did actually happen to Southerly in the Bay of Biscay when one of their twin rudders snagged on a rock and the tide went out leaving them high and dry, very much as your image. The rising tide lifted them off without too much damage.
Another reason to use the Victron app to monitor battery state and charge is that the Victron display unit, supplied by Victron fitted to my switch panel is minuscule, particularly difficult for us senior sailors .. and is very difficult to read !!!
The no foreign land app is a great idea, this is what I look for from sailing channels that is sadly lacking, cheers. Lizzy sweetheart you look like you’re absolutely melting, gorgeous also.
We've been raving about it for years! We even did a video on its brother, all in one maps, ironically from just up the coast exactly five years ago. Alpine Quest is the one to go for though.
Active Captain has been useful for me in the Florida Keys, Bahama's, and BVI's. I don't know how good it is off of the well traveled path. Something to think about if you have chart plotters that are starting to go, if you are using NEMA 2000, I think Garmin makes a hub that you can plug a computer into and display your radar, wind, depth, just like a chart plotter. If your cockpit chart plotter needs to be replaced and you can put one of your other ones up there and then use the computer below decks.
Thanks for that, Mark, that's good to know. One of the problems with sailboats like ours is the open area of the cockpit and lack of room. Systems have to be waterproof and things like laptops have to stay down below.
Great video, thank you. There is an app called lightening, it also has a rain radar, very useful and you get a notification or nearby lightening strikes. Logo is a yellow sq with a black zig zag.
We are new sailors, only have a depth sounder, AIS n a waterproof handphone for apps, autopilot for Tiller and a wind vane we don't know how to use yet. We're coastal cruisers and prefer to maintain just what we have. For now anyways. Till we improve our sailing skills. Have paper charts but not used them yet.
I use Anchor Alarm Pro. But ... I've had all sorts of issues with the GPS position suddenly being wildly out causing the alarm to go nuts. I've seen these GPS anomalies on both my iPhones, on my Raymarine E80 chart plotter (although it gets it's GPS from a Raystar(?) antenna which spits out NMEA0813 messages which positioned me in Plymouth town centre) and on a dedicated BadElf GPS receiver.
I have a new chart plotter however I am fitting a new raspberry pi with open Cpn and a mini pc with open cpn as I think this was my last chart plotter I will buy. Now that NMEA 2000 can WiFi talk to everything it really makes sense going forward
To my knowledge there are still no marinised devices that have the ruggedness or brightness of a chart plotter. Tablets and phones don't cut the mustard, especially in extreme weather conditions. To see a mobile device in bright daylight means keeping it permanently charged, which renders it un-seaworthy. I'm happy to be corrected on this though, it's been a while since I looked into this.
Another awesome podcast.. Suggestion: write down the list on the description.. Link not necessary but can be handy for some people.. EDIT: just see the pinned comment now.. Sorry.. Some more comments: - AlpineQuest = All-in-one Offline Map, apparently.. - EQ: i use: Volcanoes & Earthquakes, specific in Indonesia: Info BMKG
Wood be great to have a list of the apps you are talking about.

OMG, I found the mother load of apps, you guys rock... Best video I have seen to date on sources to use for sailing. GOOD ON YOU BOTH!
Our pleasure!

I've seen something similar off the east coast of the UK, but it was just mud banks. I think they were waiting for a spring tide 😁

Yes, good point. That display is ridiculously small!
For tracking our yacht while on land we use ais through marine traffic
Works if you're by a base station. There aren't many round here!

Yeah, it's well put together, well executed. Kudos to those guys.
I just heard about Alpine Quest yesterday from a fellow cruiser who used it a lot in Indonesian waters. Thank you for covering it. ❤😊

great video, thanks for posting it. Fair winds.

Thanks J&L! I dloaded a few of those to try. Also, which stargazing app is your favorite?
I'd be nice to have a list of aps in the order mentioned. I need to go back and write them down.
Thank for the suggestions
See the pinned comment 😉
Great video guys thank you but i couldnt find anchor lite (light)
Ah, I'll get in contact with Ray and find out for you.
@followtheboat no problem i think i will take your other advice and stay with the boat when its windy
Awesome informative vidro

Disagree @ 37:33 The chartplotter will go the way news print went since the 2000's. Embrace the change sailors. Starlink shows the way. 😎✌👌

Can't find rain viewer on Android.. any chance of a link please
Search for "Weather Radar Rainviewer" by Meteolab
Being a luddite , I use chartplotter, AIS, paper and one app. thats solitaire
That's a great app for night watches, Steve 😉
Technology is great when it works lol. but yea, it is great that there are so many to do so much that is useful to you.
Frustrating when it doesn't work as intended though. I think that's when someone chimes in with "first world problems".
Who doesnt love the fact that navionics have doubled their annual subscription costs this year...
And for what ? No changes.....
I'd go as far to say they are a necessary evil. They get no love from me.
Love Noforeignland
Yeah, it's great, isn't it? 👍👍
To put it pluntly Apple wanted to make changes and control of the alpine app
Is that the case?
OpenCPN
Can't say I had much luck with it on Android, but that was many years ago now. Has it improved?
LOL Winging Pommy :) . Guess where i come from ? 😂
Are you a whinging Aussie? There's more of them here than whinging poms 😅
