It was difficult but I managed. 2 years ago a new company bought over the place and raised the rent by $75 and I managed with help from my son and them 6 months later it went up by 200. I could not afford that. It was move in with my brother or the street. I'm lucky my brother took me in. Till my son can afford his own place. So yeah, we get priced out of any place to live.

    In my dealings with homeless people in our town, I have found there to be 3 major groups: #1 - People just down on their luck, that want a job, and a place to live. #2 - People with mental illness that prevents them from re-entering society. #3 - People that do not want the responsibilities of society and prefer to live as they do. Drug and alcohol addiction plays a major part in all 3 groups of people and needs to be addressed. The first group of people are the most likely to be able to re-enter society and get back on their feet, given the proper help. The second group of people need mental health care and may or may not be able to re-enter society, depending on the severity of their mental illness. The third group will not accept help of any kind and will continue to live as they do. This sort of 'triage' system seems to be the most sensible approach to solving the homeless crisis in our Nation.

    • @telebubba5527
      @telebubba5527 2 года назад +1

      Not from what I'm reading from your post, but maybe you left somethings out. You're right about the 3 groups, well actually there are 4 groups (sort of).
      Group #1 need to be helped as soon as possible. As you say, drug and alcohol addiction runs in all three groups, although not everybody in the first two groups have that problem. Helping people from group #1 early on will prevent them, in general, to slide down that slippery slope. They just need to see a future for themselves.
      Group #2 need care along with appropiate housing tailored to the persons need. For them a safe and accepting environment is essential and that will also reduce drug and alcohol use.
      Group #3 is in part the same as group #2, but have often been mistreated by the "system" and therefore built up an aversion to that system. It is important that that system is flexible and acceptant and to stay on speaking terms with these people without any pressure. Make the system work for them instead of trying to make them fit into a system. You'll be surprised at what can be achieved once they realize that things can be different.
      Group #4 these are people that have made a life choice in having no home. They like sleeping under the stars, bother nobody and just do their thing. They can mostly manage on their own and just on occasion need to engage with the "system"/authorities. Just be there for them for when they need it.
      Drug and alcohol addiction is often caused by people not being seen, heard or recognized. It starts as an attempt to wash their sorrows away and often ends up as the main problem. Only by tackling their problems by the root can something be done about the addictions. By not tackling their problems by the root things will only get worse.

The housing market is skyrocketed. Housing is so expensive, we practically enslaved ourselves to pay for our food and shelter all our lives. If you are not highly educated, witty and sharp to get a good job or start your own business to make a ton of money…you are unable to survive on a low paid job. That’s the truth. The problem is the lack of legal wages. The wages are too low and the wages should be linked to the local cost of living. Minimum housing is the normal legal standard of living. We have to have 4 times the rent to live in the one bedroom apartment local commute. This is the minimum legal minimum wage. 4 times the rent for one bedroom apartment local commute 4xr no less. Minimum wage act minimum social security disbursement is a living local commute. Homeless population across the country goes to work or goes to rehab. The place to live is wages and disbursed social security. We are grossly misinformed about homeless society. Nomad has become culture of transient wage but the campgrounds close to the cities are 🔒 closed.

    This is mostly a problem in our most progressive cities. If we look at the underlying factors that cause homelessness we generally will find mental illness is a prime factor. We will also find substance abuse addiction as another factor.
    The mental illness issue goes back years to when we closed many of the mental health facilities with the idea of returning the mentally ill to the community and treating them with medication‘s. Basically, this idea was to shut down these hospitals that were serving the mentally ill, kick them out on the street and keep them drugged up. The fallacy is that we have nobody to ensure that these mentally ill individuals take their medications.
    That leads to the other problem of individuals who are addicted to various medications or to illegal drugs.
    Contrary to the views of those on the program these sorry individuals are not capable of contributing to society and the fabric of America until their issues are resolved.

    I don't need to watch this video because I think I know exactly the problem. Cities like New York, San Francisco, and Portland, have priced lower income people out and there is no affordable housing unless you are on a government housing program and even then the wait lists are very long. It takes two + years to get to the top of that list in cities like Minneapolis so I can't even imagine what that wait list is like in New York. Government housing only helps those that qualify and most people don't. Ex-Felons don't qualify for any programs so they end up homeless, drug abuser (addicts) also don't qualify. So now you have those that have mental illnesses and if they qualify some choose to remain on the streets because of how the drugs they take make them feel bad or sad. They don't want the case workers constantly checking on them. Finally you have the poor and working poor. They can't afford current housing or qualify for the government programs. Most have to bus many miles and transfers just to get to that job in the city from where they live. They have to choices to make that I don't envy. Portland was a livable city and then Amazon moved in and that housing disappeared. New York and San Francisco...Ditto. When they talk about building affordable housing, they mean government housing. Best advice I could give...Stay at the shelter, get a job, open a bank account, save everything, go to the library and do research on smaller cities and towns with lots of jobs, pick a city or town and then find out how much housing is there, save enough for two+ months rent and 2500.00 for incidentals and emergencies, finally, take only what you absolutely need and all you papers (Birth, Social, ID) and buy a Greyhound bus ticket to that city or town and live there. This is what I did when I found myself in the same position 10 years ago. It worked out great. Minneapolis to small town Northern Minnesota pop.2500.

    we know services and housing are needed but what we really need is to have these kinds of organizations and these public voices come up with a plan of how it's going to be funded and how the oversight is going to occur so that it can be sold to the populace that really cares.
    we know what the problems are but we need to hear not just what the solutions are but how we can go about getting the solutions implemented. if it can be phrased in a way that doesn't sound like money is coming out of taxpayer pockets it might actually happen, because I don't think it's a matter of enough people caring but that the people who care very often have a hard time getting by themselves. give people a way to give that boost up without falling back themselves and these problems may start to be solved.

      Homelessness does not only exist out of drug addicts, that's only a portion and they shouldn't be given a house just like that, but should be helped in getting away from that addiction.
      Many homeless are just healthy human beings with a stroke of bad luck which has cost them the roof over their heads and who just need a hand in getting things back in order. For them a place to live in and work is of the utmost importance, otherwise they run the risk of falling down to the level you are familiar with.
