      I just received savage axis 6.5 creedmoor. I have ran 3 different brands of ammo through it. I can’t get patterns from it. It also has accu trigger. I’m just not sure how to troubleshoot it. Any ideas would be much appreciated!

    If I may say something. Myself and several of my friends have notice that shooting with magneto speed throws the point of impact off. It messes up the barrel harmonics. That why when I shoot for groups I shoot through the Chronograph. When test velocity, I use the magneto speed. I also shoot a 6.5 CM. Favor load: Lapua Brass small primer, CCI 450 primer, 40.1gr of Reloader 17, topped with 140gr Hornady HPBT. Muzzel Vel 2810fps. I have bullet seated about 0.010" of the the lands. Make one tacking driving load. I Like your Creedmoor series. Keep it up.

    Long story short, I've done more testing. IMHO everyone gets all wadded up over these heavy bullets, they only help you at extended ranges. For hunting loads in the 6.5Cm I stick between 123gr Hornady SST's and 129gr Interlocks out to 300 yards in my Savage 12FV with a heavy 26" barrel. I've had my best luck with Winchester 748 and StaBall 6.5 using those bullets producing top velocity's and shooting as small as 3/8", 5 shot groups at 100 yards. IMR 4350 is also a top performer in my loadings. Do you need that kind of performance in a hunting load ? NO, 1 moa or slightly over is great (20 years ago people spent thousands for hunting rifles that would do that) but it's nice to know you can pull off a high shoulder shot at 250 to drop your target DRT. I'm working with my sons original Savage Axis 308 right now, standard 22" barrel and just a M*Carbo trigger kit ($25) to smooth things up. It's shooting slightly moa right now with Nosler 150gr BT's and big charges of Reloader 15 for just over 2900fps, the rifle just loves that combo. It's often a process to find the right load that works like that in a particular hunting rifle but in the end it's worth it and fun getting there.

    Johnny Great video as always. I just watch this to see if there was any different info on the ABLR out there. I loaded these a few years back for my Savavge Creedmoor. It loved 43grns R17 until the weather got to hot. I also had trouble getting good groups at 100 yards, after talking with my local reloading Guru he mentioned that they are Long Range bullets and l would see better results at 200 plus than 200 in. He was overall correct as the 200 groups were as good or better than 100 groups were.. Might be something to look at. Also wonder if the Mag crono might have a slight affect, but you have been using it for awhile..
    Just some thoughts, keep up the Awesome job...

    I have had great luck with 130 Grain Nosler Accubond (white tip) over 55.5 grains of 4831SC in my 270 wins. I have only shot 2 deer with it but they dropped like a rock. One was 325y the other was 375y. They have worked great in my limited experience. I get nice tight groups out of them as well. Fairly consistently shooting 5 shots into .75-.85” at 100y. I have an old Sako AIII that will shoot this load .65” if I do my job.

  • @THutch556

    Good vid Jrb, your compass has proven time and time again to be a very good shooter, Nosler bullets are just too inconsistent across the board. I have gotten some of the custom competition Nosler bullets to shoot good, but overall they just don’t compete with Sierra in the accuracy department. With that said anytime I’m hunting if I can get a Nosler partition to shoot at all thats usually what I am loading, as the Nosler partitions when it comes to terminal performance in game it performs excellent.
    I certainly don’t have the amount of rounds through my 6.5 compass that you do, so I can’t say for certain, but I believe you’re onto something with the suppressor causing that flyer, and probably from the chamber chiller. While I get my share of a bad group every now and then or an occasional flyer, overall I don’t really see this issue in my 6.5 Compass. I would love to see you do more load work ups without the suppressor. RL17 and the 143 ELDX has been a good combo for mine. But I haven’t tested to many hunting bullets through mine, right now I’m working on the 140 and 142 grain Sierra match King‘s with RL17 and H4350.
    Any chance of switching to large primer 6.5 Creedmore brass once you wear out this batch of star line?
    Keep up the great work GRB.

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  6 лет назад +4

      I think I will switch to the large primers for the next batch of brass. I feel like I've characterized the small primer performance pretty well at this point, so I might as well switch over and try to do the same with large.
      I will definitely be doing some work without the suppressor, but suppressed shooting will be more common. I do have several neighbors. Imagine living next to a guy who had a shooting youtube channel and was out there shooting almost every day. I know it would drive me nuts eventually! So, shooting suppressed makes me feel like a less annoying neighbor than I would otherwise be.

  • @ru2yaz33
    @ru2yaz33 5 лет назад

    Suppressors tend to make the bullets wander some, it effects the pressures as the bullet leaves the barrel and travel through the suppressor. The other issues with suppressors is it changes the frequency of the barrel, so your barrel vibration changes.

    I was having trouble with the 142 ABLR in my Browning 6.5 Creedmoor, and I was set on using the ABLR I had tried the 5-15 thousandths off the lands that I shoot for the ELD-X, and the OAL that Nosler has in the book. I do all of my load development at 200 Yards and I never got better than ~1.3 MOA, so I did a lot of looking on the internet, and in the FAQ on Noslers website they say seat the ABLR ~50 thousandths off of the lands for best accuracy. so I loaded 3 lengths 60 thousandths, 55, 50 thousands off the lands with varying weights of H100v and I got 0.56 MOA at 200 with 55 thousandths off the lands and 2612 FPS with 38.5 grains , 0.89 MOA with 60 thousandths, and .92 with 50 thousandths. Now i just need to try different powders to see if I can get higher velocities.

    For 129 grain and 130 grain I use Reloader 15. It is the Cat's Meow for 3/4 inch or better at 100 yards. My Savage 12FV will give half MOA from a lead sled with it. 3/4 inch if I am using the bipod, and a sandbag in normal windy conditions. If the wind settles then I get half inch or better.

    Check the velocity- groups tightened when you broke 2800 with either powder. To stabilize a projectile, what is important is "rate of twist" not so much "twist rate". I had to sit under a bodhi tree many days to figure that one out... not easy to find in Kentucky

    Hi Johnny, when I’m developing loads I make sure there is no extra pressure on my barrel, instead of trying to kill two birds with one stone you might try to shoot first then chronograph as a magneto speed add out of balance weight to the barrel, and with each shot it moves a bit, that may be the group problem.

    Good vid! I like the part about the sizing comparator. Would it be possible to load up 5 rounds of your best recipe with this rifle to shoot along with what ever you are testing for the day? Almost like a control group to insure weird groups like these arent the gun just having a bad day? I have started shooting a 5 round group in the beginning of my range trip and again another 5 round group at the end of whatever I'm testing for the day. It has taught me a lot about what condition my rifle likes, warmed up and slightly dirty. Thanks for another good video!

      That's not a bad idea. I might just keep some good shooting sighters loaded up all the time. When I have a video like this where the groups are sucking, I can pull out some of them at the end to prove the gun.
      Maybe I'll use the brass I have from the factory ammo and load up these type of "sanity check" rounds.

    I've never messed with the Accubond LR before but before I stated reloading all I shot was factory Nosler 140gr Accubonds in my Thompson Center Venture 6.5 Creedmoor and 270WSM. That ammo shot 1 hole groups in both guns then I bought a Howa 1500 in 6.5 Creedmoor and shot up the rest of those 140gr Accubonds with the exact same results. From the things I've read the LR has a higher BC then the regular Accubonds so I figured this bullet was going to be outstanding but now I know to stay away from these they seem to be kind of finicky.

    That cratering on the primers is a bolt machining issue. The edge of the primers are not flat.
    I have a rifle with a similar issue. Pretty much any loads will have that "cratering".
    The performance of that lot of bullets was definitely disappointing. I have a box of 6.5 mm AB (not ABLR) that I have yet to shoot in my R700, .260 Rem. I need to get off my backside and try them out. I got a test batch of .257 AB and was very pleased with them in my R760 pump. I also shot some 100 and 110 gr ABs in a .270 and they made me smile. As always, not every gun likes the same bullets nor the same load with the same bullet. It's the "thrill" of the hunt for accuracy, I guess.

    Greetings Johnny!
    Hawk here.
    So...I seated some bullets, on the 6.5 Creedmoor, this morning and noticed an O.A.L. deviation.
    I got to thinkin' about Flyers. that one shot, outside of the tight group.
    I was wondering if it was the bullets....NO.
    Maybe different brass....NO.
    Maybe you already discovered this....... I pulled the seating depth knob, on the LEE bullet seater.
    To eliminate the plunger variation, I inserted a small ball bearing, into the hole and reinstalled the plunger.
    I got (1) out of 5 that read short..... the other 4 measured same OAL.
    Was the short one, that flyer? Could be.
    I grabbed another case, and seated another bullet.
    Now I have 5, with the same OAL.
    I'll test and get back to you.
    It's a sickness!
    Powder was trickled measured into each case.
    Bullets were NOT weighed, before seating.
    All cases are the same.
    Vanity and chasing after the wind!
    Lol!
    4895 37 g 120 g SMK Spitzer.
    Hawk.

      I almost tried firing it again but I wanted to tear it apart and see what happened. I figured the primer had gone off like our previous misfires. Big surprise!
      I don't want to be known as the Nosler hater, but I guess I can't help it. I can't fake results! I also have the 140 RDF on hand that I'll be testing soon. I also have a BUNCH of Nosler bullets that I bought for the 22 Nosler series and never used. I'll be shooting those in Valkyrie or .223 Remington eventually. Hopefully I'll find some good shooting Noslers eventually! The 77gr .224 CC wasn't bad in the Mk 262 series.

  • @geneitzkowitz4710
    @geneitzkowitz4710 6 лет назад +2

    First, thank you! This is THE bullet that I have chosen for my 6.5. But I’m getting VERY different results! But to be fair my gun is very different, I’m running a AR -10 with 20 inch Christensen carbon fiber barrel. The barrel alone cost 3x more than your whole gun! I shoot 3 shot groups, most have been sub 1/2 MOA with this bullet using 5 different powders! I’m using LR primer brass and I get flat primers regardless of my load. I’m going to have to play with my adjustable gas block to try to alleviate some of the obvious over gassing. Clearly too much pressure.

    • @jimhans1
      @jimhans1 6 лет назад

      Gene Itzkowitz if you are getting flat primers, adjusting the gas block isn't going to make them go away, the gas block only adjusts gas pressure to the gas key on the carrier, it doesn't lower chamber pressure. You need to lower your loads.

    • @gsitzkowitz
      @gsitzkowitz 6 лет назад

      I know your right but that was the suggestion of JP Enterprises. I'm running one of their high pressure bolts and they told me my problem is that my barrel is a mid length gas system. They can't believe that Christensen makes them that way. I don't think I can convert it to a rifle length which is what they told me I should be running. I'm thinking of calling Christensen and talking to them. The sad thing is that so far I've run 3 different bullets through the gun and all of them shoot sub MOA. If I load it down it probably won't run Grendel velocities and that's would make the rifle pointless! I had a Grendel, it's too slow.

    • @c6quad3
      @c6quad3 6 лет назад

      A lot of the 6.5 Creedmoor barrels have a +2" gas port. That means it's 2" longer than a rifle length gas port. It's my understanding that they do the +2" for the Creedmoor because it's a higher pressure cartridge over the 308. I've got a 22" JP barrel and it's a +2". I'm running their high pressure bolt and adjustable gas block as well and I don't have any problems with flat primers.

    • @chrisp2096
      @chrisp2096 6 лет назад

      Gene Itzkowitz - what primers did you use? I use CCI #200 and S&B LR primers in 6.5 and .308 and they are all very flat, even if the loads are very soft. My problem here is, that when using hotter loads, the only other pressure sign sort of thing I experienced were ejector circles. Visible only with magnification glasses - no shiny smears - nothing. I really do not know how far i can push my loads now

    I tried the ABLR in another gun and this may be the last box I ever buy. I've tried to get them to shoot in a 6.5X284 Norma but no luck. Now I'm trying in my 6.5 creed. I heard people say they can get them to shoot but I've never seen it done. As for the construction of the bullets its a marvel in its own but they also need to be able to shoot long range and be accurate and it leaves me guessing what the hell why or how to get them to shoot good.. I only wish I could get 1/2 MOA out of them. If so then It would be my bullet of choice hands down. I'm trying the 142 ABLR.

    Is your barrel free floated if not free floating it will most likely get rid of that first round flier. If its free floated check the gap between barrel and stock, if the stock is even slightly touching the barrel it will throw off the first shot. After the first shot the barrel will slightly expand and push against the stock causing the rest of the bullets to hit off center.

  • @elijahbaley1720
    @elijahbaley1720 5 лет назад

    Looks like your primer that did not fire has a small amount of cratering. That means the cratering is from the firing pin strike and not any kind of pressure effect.

  • @clinthenker6505

    First shot remedy recommendation... fire six shots and throw out the first shot or shoot at off target on camera to get heat/gas in barrel and suppressor. Then count your next five shots for your stats on normal target. This seems to be a concern for your AR sets as well having watched the majority of your other vids. Look forward to your next video. Cheers!

      Clint Henker That kinda diffeats the purpose, No? When hunting you don't usually get a first shot Mulligan.

    • @clinthenker6505
      @clinthenker6505 6 лет назад

      For hunting out to 150-175 yards these first shots would be acceptable as a hit. Just about anything past that range has a potential to be a first shot mulligan. The purpose of my recommendation is/was to help or start brainstorming with quality control of the load accuracy testing. The majority of the time four out of the five shots are grouping as anticipated unless it's just a bad setup combination all together. There is something amiss in the process that is causing the first round to go stray. I haven't seen anything like this first shot consistency unless it is an equipment issue or shooter and Johnny is a pretty good shot. Everyone's reloading process is a little different. For me, I weight each bullet to group them and the overall round length would be no greater than a .001" from the ogive for better consistency. To answer your question... no, it wouldn't "defeat" the purpose for load accuracy testing. Yes, there are no first shot mulligans in hunting or competition. In this scenario as long as you are shooting up to 150-175 yards you are good to go. Anything past that range will have a high potential of first shot mulligan regardless.

I’ve found 42 gr of h4350 and the eldx set .010 off the lands has been good but not great same as velocity around 2680. 45 gr of h4350 was also great but was getting loose primer pockets but velocities were around 2800. The 130 gr game changer from Sierra were money as well but wasn’t too fond of having to shoot lighter bullets. Maybe I will try a Hornady 130 match next. As for powers I also tried h4831ssc, great groups at 46gr but pressure signs and 2600 FPS velocities :/

      Oryx Pit also have tried Berger 140s with a tikka m+ mag but couldn’t get them closer than .067 off the lands. 44gr shot the best but also nothing to keep in the load data. I cut that one off just cuz I wasn’t happy with consistency

    I'm kicking a trend with the accubond. I'm having not very good luck with them in my 300 win mag and rl23 guess I'm going to have to try some 7828 or 4831 or something idk but not very impressed yet nothing under a inch for sure not really even around the inch mark yet but maybe in time I'll find the mark. Think I might just stick with Sierra and call it a day lol

    I've been watching alot of your videos, I know you can shoot. There are alot of variables when it comes to "group size." I have few questions... did you clean your barrel before this test? Because these groups are garbage compared to your typical groups, and 2) artificially chilling the chamber and barrel + current weather conditions could produce erratic behavior. 3) You changed your COAL for this test. I'm not a nosler guy myself but, changing your coal before this test may or may not have affected group performance. With all that being said. I think you should do a video of "All stars." Take the best groups of your best loads and run them under the most controlled of circumstances and see where they land. I love the in-depth nature of your channel and it has made me rethink a few things in my 338 pursuit. Keep up the good work.

      I actually tried 2 lots in my Grendel! I would have to go back and double check the videos, but they were very obviously different. The tip color was slightly different and the bullet base to ogive measurement was way more than I expected. So, if the two lots I've shot are any indication, there are definitely some differences out there. Maybe you got the golden lot!

    @JRB .. When you wet tumble the Lanolin off in your wet tumbler.. Do you use the SS pins? Also, are you using the dish soap only or are you also adding the Lemishine also? I'm just having issues wet tumbling the Lanolin lube off. It gets real gummy and the brass looks like crap. Also, what's your ratio on the lube to IsoHeet Thanks bro .. Keep up the great work

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, I use the SS pins. I use the hottest tap water I can get. I use a couple big squirts of dish soap since my water is extremely hard. I do use lemishine, and the amount depends on how long I am tumbling. For a 30 minute tumble, I might use 2 teaspoons. For 1-2 hours I'll use about a teaspoon. And if I am going for 3 hours I use like a half teaspoon.
      I have never had any problems with removing the lanolin. It seems to come right off! Maybe the hot water helps?
      My lanolin mixture is probably about 5-7% lanolin and the rest IsoHeet. I started at about 10% but my sprayer kept clogging really bad so I added more alcohol.
      On thing...I accidentally bought the solid lanolin instead of the liquid. So, I had to heat up my lanolin to get it to mix properly. It does separate a little over time but a few shakes of the bottle gets it mixed up again. I've been meaning to get some liquid lanolin and make a new mix but haven't gotten around to it since this stuff works so well.

    Nosler Accubond has been a bit of a mystery for me. I can get good results on the bench but, while hunting the results have been great or horrible. A few times, which is way too many, the Accubond has blown up on the hide of deer and elk. These are not super hot loads and well within the load data published by Nosler. I have come to the conclusion that it must be inconsistent bullet construction. I have been using Nosler, Partitions and Accubonds, exclusively for over a decade, but after the complete failure on this years hunt I am looking for a new hunting bullet.

    Johnny, your opinion on the 6.5 PRC?

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  6 лет назад +1

      I don't really have an opinion. Since I've already chosen the 6.5 Creedmoor route, the PRC seems redundant. It's not worth starting over with something new just to get 200fps. If I was a competitor and that 200 fps could make all the difference, I would certainly be looking at it. It seems like the PRC trend is going more toward 6mm cartridges rather than better performing 6.5's. I don't follow things closely, but that's what I see from my limited observations.

    So, just two thoughts. I have read about plastic bullet tips that can deform due to heat. Secondly, your hanging a lot of crap off the end of that skinny barrel, what do you think it does to the harmonics of the barrel? Thanks, you're giving a college education here.

    • @AlienMetals
      @AlienMetals 6 лет назад

      oceannavagator Probably helps in this case, at least the silencer. I understand your line of thinking however it appears that many guns have shot better with silencer attached. I'd be interested in seeing an accuracy comparison with and without the can.

    • @oceannavagator
      @oceannavagator 6 лет назад

      Lance, if we are going to go through the effort of making sure that the stock doesn't restrict the barrel's harmonics, doesn't it follow that adding weight to the end of it would also change it's movement? In the case of a thin section, even the weight of the can would tension the tube downwards. In guns that shoot better with a silencer, would that also be because of the dampening of the shooter's movement? Or would that extra weight in conjunction with a heavy barrel add to it's stability? Just being curious.

    • @AlienMetals
      @AlienMetals 6 лет назад

      oceannavagator I don’t have any real world experience with suppressors. I have seen multiple reviews when accuracy tests have shown improved groups with suppressors attached. I’m speaking of group size not point of impact. As I do think it’s common for the point of impact to change with a can installed. Perhaps accuracy gains may have something to do with the suppressor bleeding the escaping gasses over a longer period lessening the impact on the projectile? Just a guess.

    Seasoning means leaving the powder in a open to air pan for 24 hours until it stops fuming.
    I usually season my powder, and it seems that I get better Extreme Spread and Standard Deviation figures. I only season the amount of powder I am going to use that session so the rest has little chance to pick up moisture. You need a dry enviorment of about 25% humidity.

    From what I can tell from experience and Nosler's data, these super-long bullets prefer high velocities and faster twist rates, even in moderate bullet weights. Nosler requires a 1:10 twist for their own Trophy Grade 168gr .308 AB-LR load running at 2,750fps. Both of these are faster than normal for a 168gr load. I have a Compass in .308 and my initial results were similar to yours.
