Hello Nishquik! I was pleasantly surprised to see in my notifications that I was mentioned in a video, and that it was stemming from a conversation I had with great guests in my Round Table (a podcast series with low viewership at the moment). I've never been exposed to your channel before, so this surprise was even better on my end. Thank you for the kind words expressed here. I really appreciate your shoutout and keeping the discussion alive. More than anything, seeing my work inspire someone is probably the most powerful part of what I do, so thank you for this. I enjoyed listening to this Nishquik Talks, and I look forward to more. In the meantime, I have to say, calling FFVII R a remake is being really generous. ;) Since you are watching a lot of long-form FFVII R content, you will be in for a treat soon. By the way, I tried joining your Discord server, but the invite seems to be invalid. I'll be glad to join, say hi, and follow your journey as well!
Hey there, thank you for watching! I loved your collab with Orion as well as the long form discussions you've been doing on your channel as well! There's a new updated link for my discord server on my community page which should work so you can join from there!
The topic of remakes is definitely an interesting one. Every year it feels like we get more and more of them and while some are welcome, others can be kinda unnecessary. Ofcourse investing in a remake is a lot safer compared to developing something entirely new but it's disappointing when games that don't need a remake are prioritized just because they're more popular or when we get less new IP as a result
I think I like the idea of remakes increasing accessibility. Other than that, it should be reserved for games that are significantly dated. Great video!
I mean, I kinda do see this as a double edged-sword. On the one hand, I see the benefit for Video Game Remakes, as increasing to accessibility especially for forgotten titles like Live A Live, Atelier Marie or ones that don't really get a straight up port on modern systems despite already existing like Star Ocean Second Story R and Trails in the Sky the 1st, gaining a new audience, offering something interesting for older veterans to dip in again and see what they added and seeing it as a testing ground for potential new IPs/New games to build frame work (Trials of Mana Remake to Visions of Mana being a good example imo). And at the same time, I do see a downside, as investing and putting more remakes are lot more safer than making a new IP, so the ROI isn't as high as a new game, so it can still sell well. And they are times were some games get prioritized for remakes because they were popular like Persona 3, Resident Evil 4 (those Remakes are still good and welcome). I even wager as much as Star Ocean the Second Story R and Romancing Saga 2 Revenge of the Seven, as really good remakes they are, quality games. They kinda overshadow the new games released before hand: Star Ocean The Divine Force and Saga Emerald Beyond. As those games really were hamstrung with low budget, and it REALLY shows. And those resources and efforts towards those remakes could have been put to those games instead. and then you have like TLOU and Until Dawn which is unnecessary, as their original games aren't that old lol.
I do like my remakes and remasters, but as long as they are done well or enhance the experience in a better way. Xenoblade 1 Definitive Edition is the perfect example of a remake/remaster done right, and I'm sure you'd agree with me 😉
I would love a Wind Waker remake. They rushed that game out and cut dungeons. I would like for them to finish the planned dungeons and take the time to integrate them properly into the story.
your priority arguments are all quite good actually. (even if i will be surprised if xenoblade x achieve 3 millions in sales even if it should given theres 100 millions active switches out there...)
The FFVII Re-Trilogy is a reboot. This isn’t the same story. They started it over from the beginning and are taking it in a different direction. It’s a Reboot.
That's a tough question. I think Sonic x Shadow Generations did things great in that regard by adding new story content but it's really specific to the franchise. Final Fantasy 7's story is really untouchable so maybe going against the fans' expectations wasn't the best idea. Sometimes you shouldn't be too creative and give fans exactly what they want. Sometimes you should rather surprise them. The question is, is there really a way Final Fantasy 7' story could have been better?
All they had to do was a faithful retelling and most people would have been happy. Look at the reception the RE remakes (apart from 3) have gotten? Most really like them because they are faithful retellings, even if imperfect.
@TheIronTiger44 That's basically what I was trying to imply even if I think it depends. In the case of Sonic x Shadow Generations it was the right call to not just do the same thing. But yeah, they tend to say a retelling isn't valuable enough but that's not true. If it's already qualitative enough, a masterpiece will find success again no matter what. A masterpiece will always stay a masterpiece no matter the era cause it reached something essential that speaks to most. We need to use creativity when it's needed or it will just be making things worse. If it's not broken, don't try to fix it unless you're pretty confident you can seriously improve the original work. Don't try to be original but change things because it's relevant.
The only time a Remake is okay is if the technology of the time did not allow for the full artistic vision to come to fruition. So RE, and games from that era are ripe for remakes because the PS1 really held games back. However, if one is to do a remake right, one must remain faithful to the original. FF VII R doesn’t care at all about the original game. Not at all.
Since the interest is different in Japan, in Asia and in Western countries, this problem depends on what the company tries to focus on. For nostalgia, a remake should be for Japanese old men, For sales, a remake must be for Chinese. For example, While the remake of Romancing SaGa 2 was excellent for me, I heard it was terrible for Westerner. Why?

its as much a reboot than a sequel actually... which is crazy to think about.

yes ff7 story is untouchable yet was made better in a remake. dumb point kid
Not as dumb as affirming that it was made better based on a single opinion bro. You win in that regard.

I don’t want a Chrono Trigger remake. I want a remaster. I don’t trust them with a remake anymore.
poor baby mad that ff7r is better than the original and trigger will be better remade too.
Yes. Yes they did ruin it. This remake is dog shit, and anyone defending it is just in denial.
