That’s was awesome ! Seriously so great. Thank you !! Love the people having stewardship & everyone getting a tree to take care of & provide for them, even if it’s only a little
There is some great information in this video. I am new to grafting and just grafted 6 avocado trees yesterday. I had a bit of an issue with them slipping position so I will definitely try the 'third hand' technic explained here. I also used a different grating style but might try this whip style next time. Thanks for the info! P.S. I love the fruit tree in every yard idea. Everyone needs more local, free, healthy food.
It helps to lay what you’re cutting down on a piece a wood for backing. So the soft wood doesn’t deflect while trying to make your precision cut. I’ve done with and without just a bit easier. You can use the parafilm tape for the graft section also but I would wrap it with a medium rubber band to give it some pressure.
ANTHONY, such a fantastic master class delivery of how to graft avocado, absolutely awesome, also such a great idea to inspire people to grow more fruit tree, I love to go to Hawaii for Holiday and participate in your event, Hello Ha,.... 💕👌 🌱🌿🍃🌴
Thanks for the info I'm tuning from Pretoria South Africa. I like avocado trees and mango trees but I don't know how to do that grafting. My trees bear fruits after 6 to 7 years. Today I have learn an important information about grafting. 🙏
This was the best video on youtube for grafting avocados (should be in the title, but the search engine sorts it anyway)! May I ask a question? My hass graft is 2 months in, still green and if I cut it, there is moisture in it. No buds yet though. Any tips on getting it to bud? Thank you!
@@HomesteadinHawaii Thanks for your reply. I got some more scion wood today prior to your reply and cut off the old graft... when I unwrapped it there was little sign of any join happening, so I regrafted 2 🪴 plants. I used a whip graft instead of using a split graft. May I ask, if there are tiny buds on some of the scion wood's old side branches, really close to the main stem, is it ok to leave those side branches cut to about 1or 2 inches long, or will this over stress the scion?
The moon plays a part in Agriculture in many cultures throughout history and for many, working with the moon cycles is still practiced. It is said that the moon can encourage rooting and certain times, or leafing out, etc. I would suggest you google Hawaiian Moon calendar, or biodynamic calendar to learn more.
Thanks for the video am eager to learn more like which months will be the best season to draft avocado in India, lots of love from Nagaland North East India
I went back and watched this avocado grafting video and Anthony said he was using Malama avos to use as scions. Malamas are an early fall fruiter in September and October. Is that the only grafted avos you sold? You told me it was a summer fruiter. No biggie though. I am trying to find an avo for all four seasons and graft them on one tree. I have a Sharwill ready and now I can say I have a Malama as well. So a spring and summer avo I will be searching for.
I only had the avos grafted from that video so I guess it was malama, there aren't many varieties that will fruit in the middle of summer, but you might find one. My friends who grow a lot have not found success with that yet.
I don’t WANT to cut the whole top off my seedling, which is a good 5’ tall at about 8 months. I’d like to see what kind of avacado the seedling eventually produces too. But would like to graft onto several of its branches
Great video, stellar idea. I'm down, but not on island (yet!). Will contact you through email to lend some assistance as I am able. Aloha and mahalo for all you do.
Aloha. Waikoloa resident here. My seed was polyembryonic, with about four main shoots. Do I clip them down to only one shoot before grafting, or do I graft all of these main shoots?
Funny, I had learned that the scion should be taken right after the tree finished fruiting and was pushing fresh buds. That always confused me because that’s also when the tree is pushing flowers... I had heard that from Ken Love and he’s one of the experts on the island, maybe I misunderstood his instructions a bit. I’ve been trying to get a few of my trees grafted with sharwil scions but I always miss what I thought was the cut-off time. I’m going to go ahead and try some right now with these instructions and see what I get.
If i choose the Mexicola variety as the root stock and Hass as the scion, will the final product be more cold hardy (like the root stock) but produces Hass avocados as the fruits?
May seem to be a silly question, but why graft? It seemed the avocado plant that you started with was a healthy baby tree... Are you mixing types of avocado plants when you do this?
You do not know what the seedling will turn into. It can grow into the tastiest avocado ever or just a junk, watery big seeded avocado. Grafting helps ensure what you get.
Thanks for the kind words. Some people are good at what they do but not when they’re on camera. Anthony has grafted thousand of trees but probably not as much as some old timers

We should all be growing as many trees as possible
I'm living in Papaikou, this by far is the best grafting video I have ever seen.
Mahalo for saying that, and Anthony lives right in your neighborhood, you can find him at the Hakalau Farmers Market.

I would just wait. Keep taking off growth on the rootstock, make sure it’s watered. Sometimes it takes 3 months.

Good info here. Can you explain why the moon cycle helps?

Heck yeah!
Thanks for the video. What's the best variety for the rootstock (for your location)?
We just plant seeds and graft onto those
@@HomesteadinHawaii Got it. I bought your ebook yesterday & its really good. Lots of great info. Cheers mate.
I'm doing it for the first time, wish me luck!
Good luck!!

You'll have to watch avocados in your area, I'd say a month or two after they are done fruiting
@@HomesteadinHawaii thank you so very much for the information 👍
I am interested this is great
Glad it was helpful
How long canci keep the scion before grafting?
I'd say a week or so, maybe longer if wrapped and kept in cool dark place?
Someone looks blazed!

You can do that too. Just know that if you cut the top off an avocado it’ll probably just grow back.
Great video, stellar idea. I'm down, but not on island (yet!). Will contact you through email to lend some assistance as I am able. Aloha and mahalo for all you do.
Mahalo. Lookibg forward to growing with abundance
Hadir , i am from Indonesian
Selamat Datang. I love Indonesia
Aloha. Waikoloa resident here. My seed was polyembryonic, with about four main shoots. Do I clip them down to only one shoot before grafting, or do I graft all of these main shoots?
I would pick the strongest shoot and graft onto that
Aloha! Did you grow your rootstock from seed? What variety did you use for your rootstock, and why? Thanks!
We grew our rootstock from seed, I like to use seed from my best avos, they typically have the best vigor and are pretty well adapted to my climate
Any left I’m interested if you can spare some. Thanks so much for sharing.
I have a new batch and if they take ill let you know
👍

Also I need to source some scions from a few other avocado varieties. I’m in Far South Kona, I’ll have to ask around locally
Its been working for Anthony. I'm sure it works other ways too.
What is that green tape? Sounded like he was saying Ag tape?
Yeah it is a grape. Can find it pretty easy in most garden centers or online

Yup
Sir...how about grafting persimmons..thanks
I can try. There aren’t too many persimmons in Hawaii.
@@HomesteadinHawaii thanks if you have something to vlog..
I am also looking for a grafted persimmon. I have 15 seed starts and looking for something to graft on to them. Do you know anybody here?

where is your location sir
Hawaii
Take your scions during high tide. I get it. You aint talking about the oceans. Get high first and then cut your scions. Got it!
I know for sure we didn't smoke before this video. We just living that hawaii high
V grafting is easier and more successful.
I’ll give it a try
Every time I Graft my avocados they die 😢
Cambium to cambium
U made it much complexed. Could have been easier.
Sorry
I think it was a very helpful level of detail
@@acv22288 thanks
I appreciate the detail.
Irritating music.

this one of the worst grafter i have ever seen. one dude talks about full moon you know something wrong
