man i wish i kept my first car! really diggin this too because we had several bugs in our family when i was growing up. always loved them. your dad did some cool modifications especially with now hard to find parts. btw the antenna is "frenched". also btw what's that bitchin music?
I am a little older than your dad and I remember this car and still have the magazine, I can't believe he still owns it and it looks that good that is awesome. Thank you for sharing that.
I've got this mag stashed away in mom's attic, like a ton of others.
Might be time to bust em out and put em on a shelf instead.
This car was a huge influence on me as a teenager in England..I already loved vws but this car really caught my eye when it was magazine featured. Most of the cal bugs in the UK were not 50s influenced at the time.
I've owned a few beetles and type 3s since. This car showing up on your channel was a huge surprise..great channel & great to see dream cars do survive.
Awesome!
I love videos with you and your dad. Such a awesome father son combo and you bounce off each other so well. So cal is the coolest look ever for VW’s in my opinion by far. Stunning car.
Much appreciated
I remember the car, nice ride! Back in the early 80s I worked on a lot of bugs and built a lot of engines for them and sand cars. There were so many after market shops in Calif. that were geared to the VWs.
So many tricks you could do to them. I really miss those days!
Very cool!
We admired this car at the 2022 Grand National Roadster Show...So happy to see it our.
Thanks for posting! I love the old Alpine deck- brings back a lot of memories.
Totally awesome that it's stayed the same since the magazine days.
Frickin awsome that ur pop still has the org that been In the family an that's his baby, great hearing the stories about him an his buds,an seeing u an ur dad great friendships along with gramps,an the love of the older days gone ,an u can on too their stories forever, cool an cruzin.😎😎😎👍👍👍✌✌✌
Thanks Kyle!
Only the other day I was thinking, 'we haven't seen Aaron's Bug in a while'..... Its like you read my mind Ben.
Reminds me of my 67 bug that my wife and I restored together. We actually met in the vw car club that we both were in. You can’t go wrong with a vw bug. Thanks for the video guys!
Awesome story
@@FourSpeedFilms funny thing is that after so many years, we both own VW newer cars right now. I’m waiting for the Cybertruck so I got another year or 2 to go.
@@FourSpeedFilms Hi man, do you know what ever happened to Nick from Budget Build Garage?
I still have and drive my first vw bug from 1980 it's a 1959 ragtop bug still painted purple from 1982, love it always
I remember that car from the 80s. I lived in Cali and had vws. I loved that car. The scallops and the paint fading are so sweet.
TOTALLY AWESOME CAL LOOK BUG!!!! YOU BROUGHT BACK MANY HAPPY MEMORIES FROM MY HIGH SCHOOL. THANKS FOR SHARING!!!! YOU MADE MY NIGHT!!!!
We have meet your Grandpa, your sister, of course your Dad. We need to meet your Mom now. Keep the great content coming. Love the channel.
This was my favorite Beetle back in the day! When I turned 14 I bought my VW and Cal-Looked it. So glad to see this 67 is still amazing looking. Perfection.
This is so awesome that this still is in existence I remember seeing this in the dune buggies and hot vw’s magazine as well as it being on the cover of a supplement issue how to restore your vw.
Thanks for watching!
I saw this car at the huge El Prado vw show and campout in Chino Hills CA, two years ago. Its is in amazing condition for how long ago it was built. A true 1980s Cal Bug legend.
I still have cal look bug that i built in the early 90s. Lowered shaved painted robins egg blue. Sliding rag. Sitting under a cover in garage all these years. Was a cool time back then.
Awesome!
Hi Ben, you are blessed with your dad and your grandpa! All the best for your from germany.
Had a 66 Bug...got me through some tough times....wish I still had it!
That bug inspired me to do my callooker with scallops back in the 80s
Thanks for doing this one. I remember that car well. You should do another vid with your dad, and his friends with their VWs.
My first car was a 70 bug. Still have it plus many more. It’s a disease for sure.
Awesome!
Wow this reminds me of my first car 1962 Ford fairlane 500 289 black and red interior my grandfather gave it to me twice on my 11 birthday and my dad took it back to my grandfather and again when I was 14 this time i knew how to drive and I hided in my grandfather's barn and worked on it every day after high school and maybe 20 of my friends learn how to drive even it was 3 on the column i remember we installed a Nippon cassette player with some home stereo speakers until i came to this country and my uncle sold it with no one knowing i still have the paperwork but the best part is every time i see my friends we remember all those great times that is one of the greatest things in life thank you for your videos always enjoy thanks to your dad too he knows what i am talking about i am from the same era thanks
Loved the video brother.. Really took me back. Bought my first bug in 77, it was a 1962. Sold it in 78, then bought it back in 1980 and also bought a 1964 Beetle. I had all the Hot VW magazines and was diggin the new Cal Look design. Had a friend who was a VW specialist and had his own high performance VW machine shop. It was such a cool time. Slammed, 90.5mm pistons, dual 48 IDA Webers, hinge adapters to allow the deck lid to clear the Webers, empi five spokes, chrome wheels with those Porsche caps.
Etc..Etc... Good times..
Wish I still had mine..
I’m about the same age as your Dad and had a bug as my first car too, I still have one (unfortunately not the same one). It’s currently lowered on fully polished Fuchs and I plan to louvre the decklid and maybe add scallops too (mine is pale blue so inspired by JestSkiBob’s). A lot of hot rod guys are into veedubs too.
Cool!
Same man had several back in HS days, same age, from SoCal i remember this bug, and the story is great and now jr gets to exp it, doesnt look like he will ever have the same energy of owning one like us from what i see, diff gen i guess, my son is 24 an we are building a 72 super beetle together now mine sitting on 17 inch fuchs
So nice you threw Dad under the (VW) bus, “this is the only car he takes care of”! Lol. I remember the bug at Granada Hills High, ask him about the huge speed bumps in the parking lot. My lowered Chevy Citation would get stuck on them too.
Awesome lookin bug!!!.... Love the paint job!!!
Bro, your dad VW bug is dope. So clean
I really enjoy your videos that have e your dad or your grandpa in them. Its great that you have the love of cars in common. Great video. Cool Bug.
Cool Bug and a cool Dad!
This is a great video and story. I could keep watching this.
Thanks for watching!
@@FourSpeedFilms what’s the tire size for the front and the back of the bug?
Absolutely awesome bug! I once owned a 63 bug with deep metallic purple paint job and super low profile wheels. This was back in 69. people didn't have low profile back then. Nothing could keep up with me in the twisties Haha. I traded that bug straight across for a 58 Vette. Your videos are the best Ben!
Painted for $500 bucks!!! Killer bug and vid! Wicked crash, hope the drone survived!
Yeah…I have to get a new drone😂
Ben your dad is a Kool dude!
Dig all the mild custom work done on this. Never been a huge bug fan due to just growing up in a very V8 hot rod/custom family, but this thing just nails a early 60s mild custom look. The scallops just fit the shape of the bug. Also cool it was his first car and has kept it all this time. Still have mine (68 Camaro) and have zero plans of ever getting rid of it.
Fantastic car, video and music
Great video, one day I hope to have mine finished and be able to enjoy it like this. Hopefully my son will also enjoy it and I can take him and my daughter out for a drive.
So so cool, id love a cal look old skool bug in the uk
Thanks for watching!
Great to see this content!!! My 1st car was a '65 Standard Bug that I purchased from my Manager at Mcdonalds (1987).It was lowered (torsion bars removed) and still had the 1200cc 40hp engine. I too turned to Hot VW Magazine, and guided myself in building my '65 with a 1776cc, stage 1 Fred Simpson heads, and all the go fast goodies. Great memories! Sadly, I sold it back in '02, and now I wish I hadn't :(
I love this period correct builds, I built mine 77 beetle just like they did at brazil in the 70’s
Awesome!
hell yeah, a video on the bug 😎
Thanks!
Nice to see your Dads Bug. In the early 80's I "hopped up" a 70 Bug using the Scorpion Baja kit from J.C. Whitney. Deleting the back fiberglaas fenders for a set from a super beetle. Adding 5 bolt adapters with R/70/14 RWL tires on white "wagon wheels" from Sears. ( That tells you how long ago it was) painted 1978 Corvette Silver Blue.
Cool!
awesome video cheers from prince Rupert British Columbia Canada
Nice ride!
Bad ass, first time seeing all the details on this car! Clean
Thanks man!
Thanks for watching dude
One thing I love about old volkwagens is vw owners almost all of them are nice and you end up having them as buds
Thats the same exact alpine that my dad put in the '65 mustang in the 1980's! I obviously took it out for the stock AM. Shame the corners had to be squared in the opening, but whatever.
SO cool to see!
Sweet VW!. I lived in Orange county back then. I remember this dub from back in the 80`s at the shows. I'm probably same age as your dad and still have my Bug although not my original turquoise 80`s Bug. Wish I had kept that sweet 68 vert. Really cool video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Whatta nice chill video!
Thanks man!
this is really a complete car...great bug. the empi wheels are exactly what's needed. plus a great back story...this will stay in the family for a long time. I kinda dabble in the rockabilly scene, and that's mostly just hot rods, customs, and street gassers, but bugs get a pass cause they were around at that time and were always hotrodded so def part of the life.
Cool!
My dad had a dark green bug with a black vinyl interior when I was a kid, such a cool car
Cool!
I love the scallops
Such a cool little vee dub.
Thanks for watching!
Great stuff👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks!
Ben, I knew I recognized your Dad's name. He did a Bitchin job on "The Art Of Von Dutch" book! Have a most awesome afternoon!
That’s him haha
Like your dad, I kept my high school car from the 80's ('65 Mustang). Lol!
Cool!
Cool bug!
Thanks for watching
Sweet ride, FYI in England we call a deck lid a deck lid or an engine lid.
Very cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!
I remember seeing this car in the hot vw magazines in like 85 to 87 I think I even remember seeing a 64 vw in the same time frame of the Eddie Van Halen vw in the hot vw magazines
Awesome!
Thanks!
Hot paint job
Wicked bug !
Great stance you finally settled with. Would enjoy knowing about the rear, dropped spring plates or how many splines down from stock..
Nice car
It's sick AF..just seen a blue one with a roof rack in northern indiana..
Thanks for watching!
Awesome! I almost got a 2013 VW for my first car.
Cool!
This car has been featured since I was a kid
This is the california I love
Hell yeah
My first was a 67. It's the car in my picture.
Thanks for video. Been waiting for this one also, because I have -67 (still -66 and older headlights) also in my garage. Noticed that coil bracket and was that a fuel pump cover plate with finns? Is those Empi or etc. parts?
Thanks, and keep posting!
Style!
Thanks for watching
sweet!
Thanks Ryan!
Dude! I think I still have the Hot VW's issue the car was in!
Awesome!
@@FourSpeedFilms If you bring it to Bandimere here in Colorado in August I can get your autograph. Er, your dad's and yours.
Not kidding.
those old bug pix are cool! love the flamed beetle. but good solid bugs are hard to find and are expensive... typical cali doesn't know how good they got it.
Thanks haha
I learned to drive with a standard shift 60 Bug and a 58 tree on he tree Plymouth station wagon. I modified the exhaust on he bug then went into the military for four years. My mother then proceeded to get a ticket for a loud exhaust.
Awesome story!
I still have the HotVWs issue this was in. lol
radical!
Thanks!
Does your dad remember a blue '67 with white/pink scallops running around the Valley a while back? A buddy of mine owned it and I believe he still has it. It's weird because the layout of the scallops is the same, and they're both '67s. I wonder if my buddy copied your dad. lol
Is it the one recently built in Arizona? I think that is where it was from. It was at El Prado when my car was there for the 80s show Jetski Bob did.
@@aaronkahan6188 I don't think so. It's owned by Phil Hernandez, one of the guys that used to be at IF Customs in Sylmar where Erik Simpkins used to work.
I loved your dads car so much, I built my own..can you ask him what tyre size he has..love it..
Cool
Keep up the great work Ben, it dose pay off down the track..
My first car was 1967 VW 1500cc Beetle in ruby red. My grandfather had it since january 1967. I had it in early 1995. Sadly I had to sell it. Now I have 1965 VW beetle in ruby red. It´s loweder and has 1600cc engine. Probably I will build it to look like classic Cal Looker.
Love the Bug...BTW dad it's ok to age...
You should get the 80s billet glovebox door
What happens to the black CA plates? Sweet bug
Trick 👌

Could you post a parts list for your front disc brake conversion video ?
Bought mine for $1,967 in the Spring of 1967 in a closed-bid sale offered to employees of the insurance company my dad worked for, Outbid the second-highest bidder by $23. When I bought it the car had 6,000 miles on it, had been stolen by never-apprehended thieves from its original owner in Bremerton, Washington, driven to Reno, Nevada, and left on the street. It was in perfect condition. The Tacoma, Washington insurance company had it driven back to Tacoma and sold in the described auction. I kept it until the Spring of '83, when I sold it (with 319,000 miles on it) for $900 to a woman whose mechanic boyfriend insisted that she buy it. I was lucky never to have suffered a major impact collision in it. Later studies revealed that a fairly low-impact rear-end collision would tear the driver and passenger seats off their flimsy rails, thus turning the spines of the unfortunate occupants into strands of cooked spaghetti, resulting in head-to-toe paralysis. Ouch. I loved my '67 Bug, but I was lucky.
Do a video on the 32 like this next!
When it runs!
Bro, my 69 beetle looks exactly like the beetle in the 2:13!!!!
Oh yea Small Car Specialties Jonny Speed And Chrome days the call look still rules
Was that on a front cover of like STREET VWS MAGAZINE?
where did your dad get that shirt its pretty badass
Coming out soon👀
Curious on how the doors and trunk lid open without the doorhandle
Owned 9 bugs. I wish I had known being a sell out on RUclips was a option, nah my pert ass ain't for sale eather. 😉
Me Like Very Mucho!
I had a 65 squareback for a few years. I too, slammed it low! Never could get the brakes perfect, tho- still I never should have sold it... sigh
Cool!
Baja or lowered, bugs are always cool
Hell yeah
What part of California?
