      So like just about everything in fishing, this issue is situational. I don't fish big water and never will. I don't fish in bad weather where there is even a remote possible of 2 ft waves. My home waters the speed limit is 25 mph everywhere and even on the other 2 lakes I fish they are less than 10,000 acres . Under my conditions there is absolutely no real negatives to a hotfoot ... however I still think the6 are dumb and won't waste the extra money to have one ...

    I was blessed fishing from an 81 Ranger Bass Master Classic Boat. At 15 years old I learned how to drive a boat like a professional W/O a hot foot. Randy and many others have back issues and we have many ways to cushion our hard landings in rough waters. A hot foot only hinders the ability maneuver when need be. Bull Shoals Lake is my home and the main lake can get rough and you really need to set high enough to see the water in front of you. Some of us are short and have to set on a couple of throw cushions 😂. Just keep fishing and enjoy it while you have the backbone. Have a blessed time on the water.

    I am 68 and my current boat had a Hot Foot which I took out and gave away to a younger friend from our bass club. Running across rough water hurts me the next day and regular hand throttle allows me to have better ride control and is easier on my back. I can lift up in the seat and absorb the pounding better. But I say to each his own.

    I’ve had the exact opposite experience. My first boat had no hydraulic steering and no hot foot. Out lakes here in the mountains are narrow twisty lakes that wind through the mountains. On that boat it was a serious challenge negotiating the lakes and keeping the right power to the engine and steering because when you’re going from making a sharp left hand turn to a sharp right hand turn in 50 yards it take both hands to turn the wheel that far while at the same time you need to adjust throttle to maintain the boat on plane and controllable. The boat I have now has no hydraulic steering but does have a hotfoot. It is MUCH easier to negotiate these lakes with the hotfoot. We don’t have rough water here like the Great Lakes but it can get rough. With the hotfoot if I hit rough water I don’t have any problem maintaining a steady speed. If you do hit a wave and slightly push the pedal further it’s only for a split second and then the pedal is back to the right position before you even gain 1 mph. The throttle lever however almost got me killed one day when I hit a hard wave which slammed my arm down and caused me to floor the throttle lever and my hand came off the lever too. Since it does not return to idle like a hotfoot it stayed full throttle until I could get my hand back in the lever and pull it back. I full on speared several waves and nearly sunk the boat. Each wave spear threw me around making it even harder to get a hold of the throttle. I’ve never had anything like that happen with the hotfoot because if your foot comes off the pedal it goes to idle.

    I have a boat with and a boat without. I practiced 5 days in the Open on the Mississippi in my boat without. Then fished the tournament in my boat with and ran 44 of 50 gallons each day and never thought I wish I was in my other boat. I will say it’s more imperative to wear the kill switch religiously without a hotfoot. I’ve been on rough water on the Great Lakes with a hot foot and sometimes I zigzag so throttle response was nice to have. At the end of the day it’s really preference.

    I have no opinion either way, I don’t use one - but why in the world go and tell everyone that uses a hotfoot that basically they are fools for doing it and should get rid of them immediately. What gives anyone the right to tell somebody that? If anything just say “I wouldn’t use them, but I’m not gonna tell somebody they can’t, or shouldn’t”.

  • @richardjohnson6695
    @richardjohnson6695 День назад

    I have used them and believe they used to be a necessity pre-hydraulic steering days. We ran 70 plus with cable steering and the right hand torque was intense. The hot foot was a game changer. Today, with hydraulic steering being standard, the hot foot has lost some necessity but it and dual trim levers are still commonplace in the industry. That being said, it’s still a personal preference today and I am very proficient using mine in all water conditions making your argument a bit self serving. There should however be a better option for select ability. There are times I want the hand throttle and times I want the hot foot. Too bad the Evinrude G2 failed because their fly by wire offered select ability.

    Randy, I'm a fan of yours. I appreciate a lot of what you do. Especially what you've done in the battle against FFS. However, this is the kind of stuff you have to stop. You use anecdotal evidence and one persons opinion. Are you telling me that there aren't any great lakes fisherman out there than use a hot foot? How about Mark Zona, KVD, the Johnston bros? Do they use a hot foot? The overwhelming majority of bass fisherman use one. You say you can get bounced around and lose control with your foot. That can't happen when using a hand throttle? Of course it can. A rouge wave can't come in and knock you around and your hand goes forward, increasing the throttle? If you get knocked off of the seat and your kill switch doesn't activate, your boat stay in high gear. When my foot comes off my hot foot, it throttles back. Then there is the "you guys and your hot foots" Stop with the condescending BS. This is the same thing as an example of your kick against using braid and a leader on a spinning rod. When the top finesse fisherman in the world and 98% of the bass fisherman in the world use it. It's okay to offer and opinion and explain why but please, stop with the nonsense.
