YES, FRAN! I am so glad you brought up the "If I can do it, you can do it/Pray your way out" crowd. I love watching my people succeed but those comments are tone deaf. And the people who constantly repeat them will make you feel like an ungrateful, ungodly curmudgeon for not wanting to hear them constantly. As Dr. Tykeia put it, we have to be able to zoom out and get the full picture of things to see that we are justified. We are all out here reclaiming our rights to dream and fulfill our own dreams. And we have to respect that it looks different for us all.

Really great conversation! I’ve often thought about the mental costs of the American Dream. I’ve always thought that the pursuance of the American Dream is a scam in a lot of ways. It’s like why must I be a part of a society that presents only the option of working my fingers to the bone just for ease and security? That’s wild. With that in mind, I decided that while I’m pursuing what I deem to be success, I can’t lose myself, my mind or my gentleness. These things have to stay intact because they’re the things that got me to a point anyway so I need these things throughout. Anytime that I’ve felt myself losing my peace and wellness while pursuing success I’ve literally changed paths. Not easy but necessary.

I for one have always felt torn between my calling and what is expected of me. It took me seperating myself from my faith, friends, and relocating for me to even have the freedom to consider my calling. often times the pressures that are set for us by society stems right from our individual communities, and it can be hard to break free. I’m so glad that I watched this video because it is inspiring me to dream again. I am a very talented creative that has a passion for so many things, & watching you ladies put a fire in me to live in my purpose & to pursue my passions. thank you for being the change we all need to see. ❤

Another great conversation. I especially enjoyed Essie explain her entrance into the spice business.
And while I don’t have the 1st generation experience, I do understand what it’s like to be the child of parents who “made it out”. It was expected that we would excel in school and sports. That we wouldn’t get into trouble. That we would be as perfect as possible. I thrived in it but it was also very exhausting.

The diaspora conversation reminds me of the dying (thankfully) mentality between Caribbeans and Africans here in the UK. Caribbeans came before the Africans (windrush) and faced the initial brunt of white supremacy and the barriers to success. When africans came over (post windrush), the british created the divide by trying to make Africans feel and behave superior based on education and work ethic. It worked for a while, there was a seperation culturally, with africans perceiving Caribbean’s as lazy, violent etc.
Thankfully the millennials and gen z continue to dismantle this notion and are stamping out these harmful divisions.

I am person who is severely below poverty level, as my income is from disability. The American Dream was always the unattainable dream to me because to even to get close, I have overcome the obstacles of Black-womanhood, being queer, fat and a disabled person with mobility challenges. I worked myself very hard in a body that does not function well, just to make ends meet and I refuse to not prioritize rest and healing. My dream is to just find peace. I didn’t give up, I chose a path that better suited my needs.

The whole "If I can do it, you can too" from Motivational speakers has always bothered me! Not only for myself, but as Fran said, for those who are consuming the message. Everyone will not have the same path to success as you so considering others barrriers is always at the top of my list when giving advice or creating any Motivational content.

I disagree witht he notion of one of your questions. I strongly feel that our society punishes most of us who strive to be ourselves as the individuals we are. If you fray from how society and your social circles think you should be, you are ostracized and made to fend for oneself. It's much easier to just go along with the crowd. I so want to support black businesses, but the black businesses that are local to me support the "monolithic and stereotype black culture" of the area where I live. Then when you attempt to participate in the collective, you are questioned and frowned upon. There has to be a way to be ourselves and support each other. You touched on this notion in episode one on intersectionality.
