  • Hey guys, here we have part 3 of our timing belt series. MAJOR tip on how to get the water pump out without taking out the cam gear! We ran into issues with the power steering pump bracket. We also have one of my best tricks to hold the timing belt to the crank. It's easier than it looks. Enjoy!

    When I mess with timing belts, I always mark the little indicators with a paint pen so it's a lot easier to see. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be and this helps a lot.

    I once had an issue with a Cavalier that still amazes me to this day. I would get codes that a cylinder was misfiring. I opened the hood to find a fluid inside a spark plug canal on a cylinder. I couldn't see where the fluid was coming from. I had my wife start the car and I still couldn't see any fluid coming from anywhere. She started playing with the steering wheel and a banjo on the power steering rack started shooting fluid onto the serpentine which flung the fluid right onto the spark plug. Turns out somebody cross-threaded the bolt on the rack and decided not to tell anyone causing the steering fluid to do some advanced acrobatics.

    That was 11:43 of my life I'll never get back...but what the heck, I'd probably have been reading a cereal otherwise. That beeping torque wrench...old days before torque was invented, it was finger tight, pretty tight, tight and knuckle-busting hernia tight.

    Now when I get home I'm going to look at the timing belt I took out my Honda to see if it has those little arrows. As many cars I have worked on, I have never seen that, unless it's a Toyota thing.

    • @johnaclark1
      @johnaclark1 2 года назад +3

      Honda doesn't have them. The arrows are on the Toyota belt because the cam/crank sprocket marks are on the belt. If you put the belt on the other way the marks won't line up. Honda doesn't use the marks. When I do Hondas, I make my own marks on the cam/crank sprockets and the old belt, then transfer the marks to the new belt.

    Really hoping that tensioner is being replaced. Also not a big fan of using anything to 'hold' the belt to the crank cog (do not care to hear about how little force is being used). There's already a keeper there for install assist. Realizing that filming the thing you're doing is introduces a lot of challenges within itself, offering the belt from the top down keeps you from dragging the shiny new belt over all that flavor and coolant on the frame. It's like I'm watching a half truth, your info about most of the things you're doing is correct. It's the other half (methodology) that I find troubling. I've taught quite a few folks how to perform timing belt services on many different makes and models. There was a time when many techs in the area I worked in would not touch a timing belt job (most of these guys were straight old-school techs and just weren't a fan of risking bending valves on something they didn't want to take the time to understand. Just like with anything else in the world of auto repair, following directions is key to a successful job. I have no doubt that you've done a gracious plenty of these yourself with no issues. Again, I am NOT doubting skill or ability. I'm just saying that not everyone who watches your vids has that advantage. Not warning about contaminating the belt is just as bad as saying 'It'll be fine'. At any rate, I bid you good day and good fortune.
