I'm glad that I'm up to this level of sketching and shanding for my age, but I need a lot more practice. I wish I had some paints or some of those sketching pencils. I'm glad I found your videos.
Oh believe me, you DON'T need fancy materials. It's all about skills with any tools. Sure some tools will make it easier for certain things but nothing beats good skills.

It also depends on how large you are drawing. Or how much you favour pure cross shading vs "tonal" shading. Mind you, lead holders are sometimes colloquially called mechanical pencils, in which case the lead would be the same with as the one of a traditional pencil.
Your 2 hour drawing labour is my 3 day colouring work. Except for the fact that the end results will look like a three year olds 2 second scribble :))))))))))

Im a begginer aswell, sure we may have doubts of our artworks but please don't forget on why you have started. I suggest doing an everyday practice on drawing, and you'll get to learn.
I prefer Derwent and Prisma Ebonys together. I find they're smoother, if that makes sense. Of course I've used plain ole' No.2's in a lot of projects and got decent results as well. It really just depends on my subject and the look I'm going for.
+mcapps1 Yes, absolutely, the medium has to suite the project. I've had some bad experience with Derwent pencils. They keep chipping off every so often. It was nuts. Maybe I just had a pack of pencils or something, but it was bad. It was less expensive than the Steadtler.

Nice video!👍 You weren't using that Staedtler Lead Sharpener quite right. I recommend looking up a vid. It has some nice features. That doesn't look like any Staedtler lead holder I could find. Maybe that is why you used the sharpener the way you did? I've heard it doesn't work with every type of lead holder. In any case, I've found black Staedtler but not ones without the metal knurling at the bottom. I even tried to see if there were older models. That is a Caran d'Ache Fixpencil
classic example of someone who's really in charge of their tools any fool can buy a bunch of different grade pencils but it takes practice to know how to use them many thanks for sharing your knowledge

before i used HB2 pencil,and it kinda sucks a little bit,because results are not very good. But when i bought 2b,4b,6b, i acctually saw that piece of artist in me,because results came out better than with HB2. =)
Lead holders are also better for the environment :) The Staedtler mars technico lead holder is the best iv ever used personally although Koh I Noor have some good ones too.

wei : use 2b as lightly as possible to fill in the light part school : USE YOUR 2 B AND DARKEN THE CIRCLE AS DARK AS POSSIBLE (for those who dont know there are a computer scanning techniques to check answer easily but we, student have to suffer darkening the cicle so it could be scanned)

Ye, i love Stadtler, i use them pretty much exclusively. I use the hb2 ones for sketchin and penciling (it's mostly comic book stuff that's meant to be inked, so i don't need anything fancy or more specialized). They are really cheap too, i can get like a pack of 3 for 1 dollar where i am buying them, so i have a crapton of them, i probably won't have to go buy a new pencil for monthsm naybe even years haha (i have well over a hundred atm).
This was a great video! Thank you. There are concerns with erasing or lifting marks for the various leads, as well. In addition, using a blending stump makes a difference. Am I right? Or am I making too much of it?
+Jonathan Landwer Yes, blending stump will soften anything. It's harder to erase the softer and darker pencils. For erasing dark and soft marks, it's best to use a kneaded eraser. That the kneaded eraser, you just dab at it to lift the graphite off. You can't smear the graphite with an eraser.

The 4B looks better for the exterior eye but the 6B created a more realistic, smoother iris and pupil. Definitely see the benefit of combining them.

I use 2b mostly for outlines and light sketch and then move up to 8B from 4B for progressively darker shading...
It's STAEDTLER.
BTW, their 8B is very black as opposed to other companies whose 8B's are too grey.

I use a really old ESSO pacer, I dont know much about it but I do know that it is really really well made. Just checked, it's from 1953
