Fun fact, Queen performed in Rio in the 80's, to an audience of 450,000 people over two nights, and this was the song that everyone knew and sang along with. Mindblowing. :)
There's also a performance, Brian put up on the Queen RUclips channel, of their show in Kharkiv, Ukraine with Paul Rodgers after the war started to raise money for the people of Ukraine. Over 300,000 were there singing along with the Queen, Free and Bad Company songs in english.
It was over a million people who turnt up for the concert. The performance in Japan had Freddy the most nervous of all his live performances of this song
I can't even _IMAGINE_ how it would feel to have thousands of people singing a song _YOU_ wrote back to you and with you. Queen and their fans (of which I'm one) are the best .
When they performed this song at "Rock N Rio" the audience not only sang to Freddie but they also gave a great call out to Brian for his solo piece. Brian continues to do this song in concerts and they bring Freddie in for the last verse on a huge screen which always brings the audience to another level. It also occasionally brings Brian to tears,
Although he was gay,he always said that Mary Austin was the love of his life. He wrote this song for her. It is a deep and emotional song and you can see it in his performance.
He was married to her before he came out. Even after separating they remained very close and I think he even bought her a house across the street from his and they were still close.
@@mattpotter8725 Hmmm. I was thinking that they were engaged, but never actually married. When he died,he left most of his wealth, including his house,to her. She lived in it for many years. I think that she may have put it on the market fairly recently.
Freddie Mercury had the unique ability - he always had EVERY single one in the audience in the palm of his hand. His connection with the audience is simply stunning. What an entertainer, songwriter, vocalist, personality. He is so sorely missed 💕💕💕
4 fabulously talented musicians. Freddie always acknowledged that without each other they would not be Queen. But you always need a brilliant front man
That was Queen, they just loved their audience...and they wanted to incorporate them and make them feel as much part of the band ...that's what made them special.
Great reaction, as usual :-) I had the privilege of being in the crowd for this performance. Still, many concerts later, I've yet to attend a better one.
This was the same stage as Live Aid a year earlier and their final tour. Freddie only lived 5 more years but managed to complete two more albums before passing. I tear up every time I hear this song performed. RIP.
This song is so very beautiful, great reaction, love listening to you and the music you are putting forward, keep up the good work. I love Queen, it was a great loss to the world when Freddie passed. Love always xxx
I was on the highway when the news came over the radio. (back then the DJ stations were really good). It was like..."What did he just say ?" Yes, we knew he was really sick, and slowly leaving us....still when he did pass away.....a jolt. Through the music...he lives on, and he would be happy with that. Younger people have discovered Queen, and they enjoy it like we did. ( an do ).
Freddie's audience control is legendary, he manages thousands of people with a conducting wave of his hand. Then the audience sings it alone!! Truly terrific interaction. We still love you Freddie, miss you; your absence in the music world is STILL keenly felt. ❤😢
After we all lost Freddie.I have seen videos of Brain May doing this song with Freddie on screen singing. Freddie never stopped loving Mary. And she loved him too
This is my favourite live Queen song. I saw Queen with Adam Lambert before just COVID hit, and Brian played and sang this song by himself and did a beautiful job. The real tear jerker was when Freddie came up on the big screens and it looked like Brian and Freddie touched hands on the screen. What a moment!😊
I was lucky enough to see Queen twice while Freddie was still alive and I can tell you NOBODY could hold an audience in the palm of their hand quite like Freddie ❤
Freddie was always an incredible front man but all the others are also amazing on bass guitar, lead guitar and drums as well as incredible vocalists in their own right. All very highly educated, intelligent men and a very loving and supportive group of friends.
for something entirely different, check out "39" from Brian May. It's written from his astrophysicist perspective on interstellar time travel . it's a unique song from the greatest band ever.
You know when you have truly made it as a super group, when you can get the crowd to sing most of the songs for you!, There never will be another Freddy.R.I.P Freddy ❤
Most people refer to Freddie as "Freddie is this and that etc". Not in past tense "Freddie was this and that". He achieved immortality indeed. Love you forever my dear Freddie.
Well I was there at Wembley 1986 in the crowd, 17 years old, with my dad, supporting acts, The Alarm, INXS and the Quo! One of the best days of my life [got married and had two kids since, that was pretty cool], I was right down at the front. Dads passed now I never really ever thanked him enough, please all learn from this. Thanks dad! xx What a moment of history it became. Amazing, thanks Freddie and all, big kiss, and thanks Dad! What a tune this is!
I’m in my 40’s and have always loved Queen and it’s amazing to me the impact they’ve had on so many around the world and the multi generations 🥰 I see that their fan base today includes everyone, from young to old. I see teenagers enjoying the music and knowing all the songs as we older generations do. It’s brings us all together. Queen is not just a band, they’re an iconic part of our world!I If only Freddie could’ve seen how Queen’s music and his influence would carry on through many generations ❤️ Long live Queen!! 🤩
In the Rock in Rio, when the audience started singing to Freddie, you can see that they never expected such a reaction. It must be the best feeling ever for any artist on stage to experience such a connection.
This was the second to last concert of this tour and it was the last tour they ever did. Not long after Freddie was too ill and just wanted to record as many songs as possible while he still could. There will never be another Freddie Mercury.
Really enjoyed your reaction to this performance from Wembley 1986. This entire concert was outstanding and has the high energy you referenced in the LiveAid performance. Please consider reacting to Who Wants To Live Forever either live at Budapest or from this concert. It is spine tingling! Thanks for continuing to react to Queen!
This audience is no better than that of Brazil, a country where the language is Portuguese sang with Freddie in 1985 at Rock in Rio, Brazil's audience is the best in the world.
This one has a rich history. Highlights the strength of Freddie & Brian as a unit. So many wonderful live performances of this one. Glad you got Brian’s comments. They always a do an acoustic set during their shows. And queen defined an acoustic set as no electric guitar.
I was there. It’s great these videos exist because I don’t recall much about the performance other than it felt amazing to be in the crowd; it was like a big party. I was there with a bunch of friends and I remember us building human pyramids while we were waiting for Queen to come on stage. Legend has it INXS were booed by the impatient Queen crowd but I only read about that much later. As you probably already know, Radio Ga Ga is another great example of Queen audience participation.
Phil and Sam, I am really enjoying your channel! Trust me on this: You have absolutely no idea how wide ranging and diverse the Queen catalogue of music is! Before you are done with the band you will want to hear so much more, especially off their first four albums, mostly before they hit it big. Great amazing songs there!! I would suggest your next reaction should be to "White Queen" at the Odeon Hammersmith, 1975 I believe, for an earlier look at the group!
Another fun fact, Freddy has sung with opera singers beautifully. He also loved Elvis and wrote and performed "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" . Gotta do that one.
that's what I like about Freddie, he had that huge presence like Elvis did to hold his crowds spellbound, always giving his best & showing his love of music.
This song was for Mary, his wife. Although a short-lived marriage for obvious reasons, she was always a large part of his life and the recipient of his estate upon his passing. He truly did love her very much.
2001… Queen induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Brian & Roger had Freddie’s mum, Jer Bulsara (and his sister, Kashmira) there to come onstage with the two of them, to accept the award on Freddie’s behalf.
that made me tearful, out of all the stars that have passed away he is the one i miss the most. i saw his last ever gig at Knebworth, England in August 86. Just the best.
i like that you mentioned the guy getting really into the songs with his hand gestures, i tend to lock my eyes on that audience member every time i watch this lol
Another thing that’s amazing is the audience knows all the words to this and it wasn’t even any kind of big hit for Queen. I think they only released a live single of it in the 70’s. But any real Queen fan knows all their songs because this is one of those bands where their albums are all killer and no filler.
I have been lucky enough to attend some of the biggest and greatest concert in my lifetime. My father took me to see this concert when I was 13 until this day. I still rank it as the best concert I’ve ever been in in my life. And I have seen some of the world’s greatest performers performed live at some of the greatest concert events. When I was four months old, my mother took me to see the Rolling Stones swaddled me up in one of those little hippie wraps as she danced away to the stones. Not to be outdone by this four months later, my father took me to go and see Pink Floyd. I’m not sure how he had me wrapped up but yeah, I’ve been to some greatest concerts within my own lifetime. I think if I was old enough I would’ve been at Woodstock lol.

His shirt is totally Betty Boop - great catch! I'd encourage you to listen to the album recording - very different and performed on piano with a bit of harp, and amazing backing vocals all by Freddie. Gorgeous original version of this song. Brian really hasn't gotten any credit from anything that I've read for arranging this song to be performed accompanied by acoustic guitar - it's almost like a different song from the album version and equally good, but in a different way.
Recommend listening to the studio version, also. It is exquisite. Freddie's mic is cordless here but up until the mid 80's he masterfully avoided tripping up himself, John and Brian whilst dragging the cord all over the stage! FYI, Queen"s1981 Rock Montreal show will be shown across the globe in IMAX on January 18-21.
Another different experience would be to look at the audience at a Green Day concert, singing to Bohemian Rhapsody....with a little help from a recording to entertain the audience before the big show..😊
The first time I saw Queen, the band Kansas opened for them! The second, and last time I saw then live they didn't have an opening act, but it didn't matter. Freddy and Queen were absolutely mesmerizing Freddie was able to hold every member in the audience in rapt silence and cause them to react to him. He was Rock & Roll's ultimate showman.
That's from the queen concerts they did at Wembley stadium which if you love queen it's a must watch...and that t shirt was from it's a kinda of magic tour
