What Is The PERFECT Crosshair?

  • It’s no secret that first-person shooter enthusiasts are constantly changing their configs.
    Whether it’s your sensitivity, aspect ratio, resolution, video settings or your view model, it often feels as if our settings are in a constant state of flux. As if screwing up a single frag is enough to overhaul our entire preferential infrastructure from the ground up.
    But there’s nothing that gets subjected to as many endless tweaks as our crosshairs.
    Big. Small. Thick. Thin. Large gap. Tiny gap. Dynamic. Transparent. Outlined. Or just an absolute monstrosity. Reticles mark the one aspect of our config where there aren’t only an inexhaustible variety of options but quite literally too many combinations to count.
    The question, of course, is what makes for the perfect crosshair? Also, does it even exist?

    The fact that they missed 2 major games in the late 1990's. Quake released in 1996 and its subsequent releases and Unreal Tournament released in 1999. Both title's released on the pc. Quake being the faster of the two games promoted aim and targeting. While Unreal Tournament had unique crosshairs for each of the weapons notating spread and fire mode. UT was one of the first games that allowed you to change your crosshair to either be a universal crosshair for all weapons or change it per weapon. You are not wrong Halo helped solidify a standard used in most every fps to date but they were not the first.

    • @StrikeFromTheSkies
      @StrikeFromTheSkies 3 года назад +9

      And more than that, the different crosshairs per weapon in UT were designed so that you would know exactly what weapon you had selected if you were playing with the view models disabled.
      Giving Halo the credit for standardizing crosshairs in FPS is straight blasphemous.

Tenz has said that he has changed his sens in-between games in bo3 series to help him focus more. Shroud and many other pro players have said similar things about crosshairs. Some people like ropz and elige can focus even without those helpers, but for most people, you could instantly feel the positive difference of changing your crosshair and going back and forth between your two favorite crosshairs.

    Dimitri, how dare you mention sensitivity first lol It's literally the only thing I don't change. Res, Crosshair, viewmodel, etc.. hell yeah but I don't mess with muscle memory
    Loved the vid. Get scientific with it!
    dot crosshairs definitely make screen panning seem full of more "motion" while bigger ones don't. Spraying with bigger crosshairs is easier for me

    • @sEaNoYeAh
      @sEaNoYeAh 2 года назад

      The don't change sens coz muscle memory thing is snake oil. The human brain is designed to adapt to exactly that kind of thing. Children's bodies change proportions constantly and yet they're able to run (/draw, do gymnastics etc). World class racing drivers can perform with cars changing weight due to fuel, changing grip due to tyre wear etc. Plus a study showed that changing your sensitivity for practice actually resulted in better and faster improvement to aim, the theory being that the brain has to stay focused on the task rather than switching off because it's so familiar. Aim Lab even added a sensitivity randomiser to help players practice this way.

    I tried many kind of crosshair but at the end of the day, I have easier time to spray and tap on a dots crosshair with medium gap (basically the smallest value of crosshair length with slight gap). Granted it's not as good as dot or small crosshair in a long range shooting, but on medium range is super easy to heashot.

    The first third of this video is full of misinformation:
    CS came out in 1999, 2 years before halo came out (2001)
    Halo only pioneered 3D fps on console; quake, unreal and half life were years ahead of console.
    Quake 2/3 (possibly quake 1) and unreal tournament both had crosshairs.... and were years older than Halo

  • @im.weasel
    @im.weasel 2 года назад +1

    CS Came out a year before Halo Combat Evolved and had a very visible crosshair. If you wanna go back some more, the beta for CS was a year easier in 1999 and also had a crosshair. Unreal Tournament also came out in 1999 that has crosshairs and many to choose from in the settings. Since we are on the arena shooter genre, Quake 3 Arena had crosshairs in 1999. Halo isn't first in this regard.

    CS came out before Halo. Kind of messes up the narrative here of Halo being the first competitive game to have a crosshair.

      edit: only new was the color change because consoles needed aim assist. so much to competitive...pff

    I think y'all missed a big aspect of crosshairs in that you didn't look at their applications in a real world setting. Reticles are commonly used to provide distance references, which in turn help accuracy WRT bullet drop and wind correction for projectile weapons. Now in the digital domain, hitscan weapons do negate some of the uses, however they can still be very much used to judge distance. And one can imagine for example a muscle memory correlation of one crosshair-length for a flick being built over time. For a shotgun it can help one to judge spread.
    That said, the precision of a dot is an important factor as well. There's the old saying of "aim small miss small".

    First Counter Strike came out in the year 2000 as a mod for Half Life that spread like wildfire, Halo came out in 2001. Unreal Tournament also came out in 1999. This first version of counter strike also had a crosshair. And Unreal Tournament also had customizable crosshairs. A bit unfair to say Halo was the first.

    Yes, yes you do. Whether its the brim molly, Viper or Killjoy nades or Sovas arrow. Sure, they arent smokes per see, but you definitely need to know these Lineups. The UI ones on sova are only used because the l,eveldesign on some maps is just really clean w/o that many lines like in CSGO.
