I have a 2018 HRV LX, awd. I am averaging 31 mpg which I feel is great for an awd vehicle. I don't understand people saying that it's under powered, I have no problem merging on the expressway, etc. This is my first cvt vehicle, and I am very impressed with the performance. If I could find any faults on the HRV I would share them, however I can find no faults. This will be the first year that I am actually looking forward to the snow!
I found out what the sport mode is for. If you are in a huge hurry and want to take off really fast, put it in sport mode and floor it. You will be amazed at how fast it takes off.
Some criticisms would be nice. Not saying only negatives, but a differentiated review would be much appreciated, i.e. what are the advantages of this car over the competition and what are the disadvantages etc. No mention of the torsion beam rear suspension, the underwhelming power, the rubber band feeling of the CVT, how loud it is at highway speeds nor that the fuel economy is no better than the larger and more powerful CR-V. You also named several "safety features", which are standard across all cars these days, instead of mentioning that there is no active cruse control, autonomous emergency braking nor blind spot monitoring. Finally, the head unit is terribly dated, sluggish and does not feature Apple-Carplay nor Android-Auto.
Dave Travels Dave’s style is to give us a tour of the vehicle, he doesn’t usually go into nitty gritty details about where the vehicles falls short. If he does it’s a quick observation but he doesn’t really get negative. If you want that, a couple other reviewers do that.

The theme here is bashing the cvt, however I tend to like my 2018 HRV awd with cvt. Plenty of power for me plus getting 31 mpg average. Actual HRV owners have nothing but good to say about their HRV, non-owners are the bashers it seems.
@@jimrees1778 Those bashing the HRV should be looking at the luxury market instead of the economy market since everything must be too slow for them... The CRV with its "adequate power" only gets up to 60 mph 1.1 seconds faster than the HRV lol.

After owning over a year? 1.8l model Pros: Comfy, light steering wheel, surprisingly very fuel efficient in long journey, practicality is good, can catch up with 318i, unique interior, brakes are lit. Cons: Gotta get used to CVT, sometimes the car has a kick sometimes doesnt depending what fuel you using, weird air vents setup, a bit of a roll and thats it i guess
I've got a '16 HRV LX with a manual transmission. It's not the most powerful vehicle around but it is great for tooling around town and with the MT I've never had any concerns with acceleration.
I had one of these as a loan from my Honda dealer while my 12 y.o. Odyssey was having the power doors fixed, again. While I like the size and capacity of the HRV, I am embarrassed by the performance. I don't know if it is the CVT or the engine, but the HRV did not feel safe getting up to Highway speeds. And Honda, I know you were trying to cut costs, but please please PLEASE put more sound insulation in this. You could own the segment, but the corners you cut just make this a chore not a pleasure to drive. I think I'm going with the Kia Niro.

Nice review Dave. I have a 2010 and 2015 Fit. The infotainment system in this HRV is the same as the current Fit and badly in need of improvement. The CRV has a much better system, electronics in general, and exterior lighting. I’m waiting for the HRV to be updated, along with the Fit.
Awesome review as usual. I wish they put more powerful engines into these sub compact cars though. It’s tough to speed up on the highway or pass with such little power.
CVT's are not known for being responsive, sporty, or fun to drive. They're economical for keeping the car in the power-band to efficiently accelerate with minimal effort. However, they are sluggish and rob more power than a standard transmission or regular automatic. Now that we know a CVT takes more power and yet is more economical when it comes to MPG over a normal automatic (which is a oxymoron, is it not?). Imagine adding in an AWD system to rob even more power and add more time to acceleration. Therefore, I would rather have the AWD because I am in Alaska and would like it with a manual transmission not only for the fun factor, but also because it will make the vehicle safer and more responsive when it comes to acceleration, merging, around town driving, etc. Example The Subaru WRX with and without the CVT lose another 20 horsepower and 1.5 - 2 seconds slower in 0-60 / quarter mile times. ***Rough estimates off top my head from memory*** For majority this is fine. I've driven both manual and CVT Subaru's.
Wish these car companies would lend out the base and next-to-base trims for these reviews. As an Everyman myself I'm not buying the top level EX-L Super Turbo Navigation Premium Limited Panaromic sunroof Eyesight Super Technology Package anytime soon.

David Giles the biggest problem is the powertrain, Honda should put the 158 horsepower 2.0L base engine found in the new Civic instead of the 138 horsepower 1.8L and 190 horsepower 1.5L Turbo as the top engine because Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X has a top engine, The Manual should be for AWD models and when paired with the 1.5L Turbo, it is going to be one of the more fun to drive crossovers this car doesn’t follow the Honda tradition of building one of the more sporty cars in the class.
HRVex, I agree with you 100%, my 2018 LX awd has plenty of power, and I like the cvt as well. I don't understand all of the cvt bashing, they work just fine. The HRV is a great vehicle, solid, quiet, plenty of inside room, plus I average 31 mpg. Pretty good for an awd vehicle I think.
@@jimrees1778 yup, CVT's are more efficient than automatics and manuals. Most people cannot adapt and accept change or they just don't like the sound. I get that about the sound, so I like hearing the shifting in S mode. In D mode with eco on, my best was 42 mpg. If I wanna speed, I use S mode with eco off with or without the paddle shifters. Again, I have no problem speeding into freeways and passing others! But my mpg would be around 25
HR-V is so slow it's dangerous. Do not buy one. Not saying you need a sports car but you need to have enough power to get out of trouble should you get into it. If they put the civics 1.4 turbo in it it would be a great little car.
I do not agree. My 2018 LX awd with cvt has plenty of power, plus I get 31 mpg. These are fantastic vehicles, and actual HRV owners will agree with me.
If they did they would have sold a bunch more by now. Its lack of power is the only fault I really found with it. The backseat is a great little trick.
I guess because i'm an old dude now, that I have no need for a fast car. I just need something to get around in snow, etc., and that gets good mpg. The HRV is a perfect fit for me, but I can understand some wanting a bigger engine .. but then the mpg's will suffer of course.
I agree My new HR- V is great on gas. However, I am on the expressway a lot and the power scares me when I need to excel with seconds notice. My last car had a larger engine. I will probably keep this car for 2 years then sell it.
The price of this thing will be way higher, not all engines are the same, they have to build a special engine to last longer with turbo. Of course you can add a turbo to any engine the downside is 1) will not last longer 2) you lose immediately the factory warranty.
I think my 2016 Honda Accord sedan get better mileage that this little car. This car is not very impressive. I would be better with the Honda 1.5 turbo.
That was actually my dilemma when I was looking for a new car I wanted a hatch that was roomy, fuel efficient, and it had to come with a manual transmission. The Hyundai Accent, VW Golf/GTI, Honda Fit, Mazda 3 were at the top of my list but then I looked at the HR-V and it bests all of those in cargo volume while getting similar fuel economy and it was in the same price range. Cargo volume is pretty amazing in this thing considering its class/exterior dimensions and that was my main factor. Also ground clearance is better than those if you are into camping/outdoor activities. And none of those others were offered with awd, which I didn't care about but is definitely a consideration for those that frequently drive in bad weather conditions. I can't say the HR-V offers the sportiest driving experience but I didn't care because I have my motorcycle to scratch that itch... If I didn't then I would have gone for the Golf or Mazda 3. All things considered, I love my HR-V.

I think my 2016 Honda Accord sedan get better mileage that this little car. This car is not very impressive. I would be better with the Honda 1.5 turbo.
I'm k20 swapping
Sounded more like an add for Honda than a review. Not a single critical remark in the entire video. Waste of my time.
in indonesia awd is expensive
tan hermansa nga butuh kl di indo
Needs a turbo, very sluggish otherwise!
It would be more responsive with a turbo, not like with the current engine. :-)
It has a sports mode. Pretty good and fast
You obviously did not use S Mode and the paddle shifters and the Eco button off. I have no problems speeding into traffic and passing other drivers
The mileage is CRAPPY. Powertrain is too small for it's size.
Is a decent vehicle. I'll do a k20 swap though. Powaaaaaa😁
Same HRV since 2016....and same crappy stereo without a knob. Nothing new.
bagus
same old engine!
Not another cvt, that sucks. Total junk.
Why do people buy silly subcompact suvs... just get a hatchback if you need the space
Choices my friend, choices. That's one of the many beauties of a free society.
Delta Dudley higher seating position
I'd choose the HRV over the Fit because of the difference in ground clearance.
It's simple: Available AWD and a higher seating position & ground clearance. If you can do without those, then yes, the hatch makes more sense.
Honda HIV
Dickens Cider lmao unfortunately this is true
Over priced used and new
Old fashioned design🙁
Bruh take off ur hat when you're in the car, it's not polite. Also why'd you have to squint and apologize for the sun. It's a car, you can move it so you get a better shot.
Scott123180 Jeez mom okayyy
Scott123180 hmmm I wear my hat in the car constantly. He wasn’t in the company of a lady. He always wears a hat. I don’t think Dave needs to have you criticize Him, he is an adult with a successful past and current professional career. You are likely young and inexperienced as you start a sentence with, “Bruh,” when addressing Dave. Do you expect him to take you seriously? Talk about impolite!!!
Oh my this is one ugly car, BORING BORING UGLY if there's such an expression.
Your voice same as the shoe reviewer channel
Nice calves! Haha need the CDX.
