    Thank you so much for this tutorial. I was hesitant to purchase a mesh stencil because all I could find were very short videos on these being used, but this explains in detail how to use the mesh stencils. I will definitely order very soon.

      You can use the mesh stencils on buttercream cakes that are iced very smoothly and fully chilled/set up. Thin some buttercream with liquid whitener to make sure it is opaque, and use this as the stenciling medium. If you are making it any color except black, add the whitener, then the color as needed. The mesh stencils make more of a print than a raised pattern, so it is very important that the icing is opaque.

    • @EvilCakeGeniusChannel
      @EvilCakeGeniusChannel  2 года назад

      It can with buttercream thinned with liquid whitener as the stenciling medium! The whitener makes the buttercream opaque, which is important since the mesh stencils leave more of a print than a raised pattern.

      Yes! Our mesh stencils work on buttercream :) You just want to make sure to let the cake set up in the fridge before stenciling.

    Can you use an airbrush to apply colors with the mesh stencil?

    • @EvilCakeGeniusChannel
      @EvilCakeGeniusChannel  5 лет назад +1

      We've never had success airbrushing a mesh stencil unfortunately. They have a fine fabric backer that doesn't seem to allow the mist through. I have heard from just a couple people that have successfully achieved airbrushed mesh, but so far it seems to be rare!

    Thank you for this video, it’s so informative and fun to watch! I do have one question. So I see the consistency is pretty runny. Did you achieve this by adding some amount of water? Or the whitener and piping gel did the job of thinning it? If I have to add water to achieve the right consistency, what the ratio per this 1/2 cup of thick RI? Thank you in advance

    • @EvilCakeGeniusChannel
      @EvilCakeGeniusChannel  5 месяцев назад

      We do recommend the royal be pretty thin for mesh stenciling, about the consistency of run in sugar. Because royal can vary so much, we don't have an exact recipe, but water can be added to thin it. If you are adding piping gel, that will also thin a bit, but water will likely still be needed as well.

      To make a pattern gold with a mesh stencil, the easiest thing to do is use our Metallic Gold Royal Icing mix.

    • @EvilCakeGeniusChannel
      @EvilCakeGeniusChannel  4 года назад +1

      Straight royal icing can be used. We only add the piping gel to extend the drying time, but if you work quickly, you should be able to stencil just fine without the gel added!

      You can definitely use them on dry royal! We also have smaller, cookie specific mesh stencils, but you could certainly also use a larger mesh stencil and only apply part of the pattern to a cookie.

    • @EvilCakeGeniusChannel
      @EvilCakeGeniusChannel  3 года назад

      We have mesh stencils with lace patterns that you can use to stencil lace on a cake. It is not a raised pattern like a lace mat would produce, but rather a flat pattern with very little royal icing left behind. Almost a print of the pattern.

    How does the royal icing consistency compare when using a silkscreen? Does it need to be thinner when using the mesh? Trying to get these different consistencies down for different products.

    • @EvilCakeGeniusChannel
      @EvilCakeGeniusChannel  5 лет назад

      The consistency for a mesh stencil is looser and thinner than the consistency used with a traditional acrylic stencil.

    • @EvilCakeGeniusChannel
      @EvilCakeGeniusChannel  5 лет назад +2

      No!! On a traditional Acrylic Stencil, Icing that loose would smear underneath the stencil. Definitely thicker for acrylics. Stay tuned, there's a tutorial coming for those in the coming month!

    What can I use instead of Piping gel to get the icing consistency?

    • @EvilCakeGeniusChannel
      @EvilCakeGeniusChannel  5 лет назад

      You can thin your icing out with water as well. The piping gel gives you a little more working time with large spaces, because it takes a bit longer to dry. But if you don't have any, you can thin with water and work quickly.

    • @EvilCakeGeniusChannel
      @EvilCakeGeniusChannel  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Dawn! You can iron them out, but you have to be very careful! The mesh will melt if the iron is too hot. We recommend putting your iron on it's lowest setting and putting a tea towel over the stencil so the iron never directly touches the mesh. : )
