  • Pacific Coast Highway is a great road most people will experience in a bad car. So the guys took the Scion FRS on a roadtrip and brought along a Hyundai Genesis Coupe and Lotus Elise for comparison.
    After dodging RVs and Tourists they even found time to pick favorites.
    Lots more on the way - look for us on Thursdays!

    I really love these guys. Excellent reviewers, fair and honest reviews. I think any real car enthusiast would never say "oh this car sucks" or "who would ever get this piece of crap." I've read so many negative comments about all of these cars- at the end of the day, a real car enthusiast understands that every car has positives and negatives. Take what you like most about driving and get the car that suits YOU the best way. But one car is not necessarily 100% better than the other. Just enjoy driving what you like to drive. It's like saying "potatoes are better than art." It just doesn't make sense to say one car in a certain class is "better in every way" than another.

    I´m a owner of a 2014 Genesis Coupe V6 3.8 and i use it as my everyday car.
    I tested the brz and i love the way it can circle around corners. but: the lack of power :/
    and it realy fails as a everyday car.. no backseats and no trunk!
    The Genesis is a fun 2 drive everyday car, the sound of the V6, nice seats and a usefull trunk.
    The Lotus is a toycar. Much fun 2 drive but u are happy if u don´t have 2.
    btw. realy nice road!

      +kcopy I don't really get why people complain about the trunk in the FRS. What the hell do ppl put in it? lol. Dead bodies? I just went to the grocery store and put $250 in groceries into my FRS trunk. Not even exaggerating. And i didn't even fold down the rear seats. I have had the car for over a year and not once had issues with a lack of trunk space. The rear seats in a genesis are bigger but not by much. I still wouldn't want to be carrying around passengers in a genesis. The small back seats in an FRS are a plus IMO. Because i can fit 4 ppl in my car if i really need to ( i have done it a few times), but its also a great excuse to not be a chauffeur to everyone.

      I feel differently, the Lotus is out of place, as the other two cars are 2+2 'sporty' cars. The BRZ limited, while maybe not on par with the genesis, is not nearly as 'limited' in its interior quality and design as the FRS. I find the guage cluster more classy, the leather trim, etc makes it a much nicer overall feel and maybe you'd feel the distinction between the two a bit less severe. Just like in the other review with the FRS, RX8, and an S2000; they are throwing 2 seaters in, and for me, it seems out of place. 2 seaters I feel are a different market, and a miata/S2000/Lotus or any other 2 seater needs to be compared against each other to be a better, realistic comparison.
      Still like their videos though :)

    I would have to say I would go with the Genesis, even though I don't like the look of the current gen. I liked the first generation a lot better. I am definitely biased though. How was the better interior not part of their decision for a better every day driver? I am assuming the version of the genesis that they tested was not the track version, but I might be wrong. Either way RWD car and a decent amount of HP is not a good combo for a daily driver in the midwest. At least not during winter

    A lot of persons on the web want a turbo for the FRS/GT86/BRZ.. but I really believe this wouldn't be the answer. Before of that, It would be better to introduce a 2.5 engine. If the same power/liter ratio is respected, they will be around 250 horsepower under the bonnet, and the torque will just be bettered as well.
    In my opinion, a turbo will harm the direct feeling of the gas, that is one of the great things about the Toybaru's.

    • @cradleofgoth
      @cradleofgoth 9 лет назад +5

      +Alexandre Boucher Disclamer: I've never driven Genesis. FRS/BRZ (I've never driven an FRS as well but I own a BRZ) is not designed to be very comfortable, it's comfortable enough (although for me it feels very comfortable, the seats just hug you and let you corner at any speed without falling out of the seat). You would only buy a FRS/BRZ if you want a cheap sportscar that is fun to drive and makes you very happy and I've never regretted getting my BRZ. Also, you just can't beat Japanese reliability. It's just an amazing car all around. And if you're into modifying FRS/BRZ are very modifying friendly. For me my BRZ is currently too soft though, gotta get some coilovers with stiffer springs :)

    • @bouchandre
      @bouchandre 9 лет назад

      Malkhaz "Jayela" Jakelli That's weird, I thought it was very stiff. I said it was uncomfortable because the seat was hard as a rock and every little bump felt like a broken bone. The car I was looking for was gonna be a daily driver, so the BRZ jut wasn't an option. I don't really modify my car either, so that's not a problem haha

    • @cradleofgoth
      @cradleofgoth 9 лет назад +3

      +Alexandre Boucher the seats are sporty, a bit stiff maybe but i can seat in them day and night without getting out i like them so much. my BRZ is a daily driver. by soft i meant suspension :) another thing, might be irrelevant to you, is i do some autocross, i've seen a lot of FRSs and BRZs but never seen a Genesis there :) for anyone who likes driving (i mean who can appreciate handling and all the fun a car can offer) BRZ/FRS is the best budget car in my opinion :)

    • @dravlor
      @dravlor 8 лет назад +2

      +Alexandre Boucher Interesting! It is funny how everyone has a different feel in different cars. I am 6'2" 215lbs and my first car of choice was the Genesis ...until I test drove it. For me, the seats were immediately uncomfortable and when I drove it, I could feel every bit of the road as it drove like a brick. When I test drove the FR-S, the seats were so much more comfortable and I did not feel the road like I did with the Genesis. The other bad part that irk'ed me about the Genesis... the faux air intakes. Really...? Anyway, it is interesting to see - and know - that everyone's perception of comfort and body style are different. Glad that you enjoy your Coupe and hope that you enjoy it for many years!

    I've had my FRS for 18 months now. I've put over 50k on it driving from central KY to Fort Knox and Louisville the whole time. I spend 3 hours on the twisties of central KY every work day and LOVE it. these roads are so well maintained I'm kinda surprised (45 years in Seattle before this). And when my factory tires came to the end of their life, I moved up to "sport" tires. It completely changed the car's personality. It's like driving a race car to work every day. And I've avoided a LOT of deer. Some by inches. Literally. I completely agree with what they say about the handling, but it's plenty of power for me. And with the six speed manual, when hypermiling, I was able to average 39mpg for several tanks.
    BTW, the tires I got were Bridgestone Potenza RE11A's. The only thing frustrating about them is I don't get to drift as much. Too sticky.

    • @bliglum
      @bliglum 9 лет назад +7

      A lot of people like to bash on the FRS for being "slow".. And while I'm surprised they're not offering a more powerful super / turbo charged engine, I don't think it was ever slow by any means... In fact, it's numbers are right in line with comparably priced compact sport coupes and hot hatches like Civic SI, VW GTI, etc.. 200hp, 0-60 in about 6 seconds.. Along with comparable 30 or so mpg, back seat, everyday usability..
      Yet, people compare it to much larger, heavier, midsize RWDrivers like Mustang V6/ecoboost and Genesis coupe, because there is no equal to the FRS.. These people only see the extra hp, and fail to notice that they also weigh 3,500lbs+, some 700LBS more!! The only RWD cars close, (Miata, used S2K's) are much less practical. So, for my money, the GT86 is the best of both worlds. That's why I'm currently saving to get my FRZ : )

    FR-S was purposely built to be a good light weight sports car/ tuner car, just like its Grandpa the Toyota Corolla GTS Twin Cam/Levin/Trueno GTS. Since it's target customer is a Tuner enthusiast, research, beef up the engine, turbo or supercharger it yourself and quit whining. The Lotus is a exotic sports/roadster car enough said. The Genesis is sports car made by Hyundai, so good first attempt. First attempt defined: Toyota: Supra TT, Trueno, MR2(not so Ironically Lotus like), and has been all sports cars for a long time.

    • @gvr4ever
      @gvr4ever 10 лет назад +5

      Only the tuner market is not NEARLY as strong as it once was. The market has still not recovered from the 08 crash, unless you know how to play the stock market really well. Salaries are still down. I'd love to see for the 2gen cars, 110hp per litter, 2500 curb weight, and performance tires. I think this car would be more fun left NA. Turbo's kicking in can get away from a unsuspecting driving going around corners and they loose power on hot days (really dependent on the size of the inter-cooler). A SCer could be fun for sure and if the BRZ/FRS ever gets forced induction from the factory, I hope they choose a SCer.

    • @ConsciousRobot
      @ConsciousRobot 5 лет назад

      Thank you for saying this. FRS was definitely meant to be a blank canvas, platform for tuners. They even made the exhaust tip cutouts quite a bit larger than the stock tips. And just look at it. Is so simple but in the most beautiful way.

    Great question! In this case, both are true. The FRS/BRZ is light-weight and rotates very easily with a controllable weight shift... so that makes it a lot of fun on a canyon road. That also makes it easy to over-rotate if you so choose and the same control-ability simplifies guiding it in oversteer. It's informative in both. Better tires would make it even better in corners but lose some drift-ability as it lacks the power to overwhelm good rubber - like an AMG can for example. Does that help?

    Now in the real world I'd take the Gen. These are America road with America traffic. Merging on and off the interstates. These test appeal to driving in a fantasy. Open road with corners without cars....Of course these handle well but the reality we are from work to home with very little inspiring driving especially with a Prius, SUV, minivan in front of us. The majority of folks are needing the surge of speed on real roads so HP will win this.

    Couldn't agree more. I bought an FR-S last spring as my only car and have loved every single day since. I was concerned about power, but took the plunge. Not an issue. I agree with Todd, 240hp/200lb/ft of torque is exactly the right number, but the issue is that it would then need better tires, bigger brakes, beefier bits throughout, so much more than just a turbo, and it'll be like 35k. It'd be a monster, but not sure if it'd be "better" for so much more coin.

    • @theCycleReport
      @theCycleReport 10 лет назад +1

      I don't see the WRX as the best of everything, actually. I see it as the jack of all trades, master of none (aside from dirt) kinda deal. They're GREAT cars and I almost bought one a few times, but I think you can't have the most of anything without losing some areas of expertise.
      Also, I honestly don't have much trouble with the FR-S in the snow (Chicago), it's light, has great balance and is responsive in every input. Aside from taking off in an inch or more from a stand-still (which is a bit tricky), the car is actually pretty good in the winter. Not AWD rally-good, but far from bad.

    • @theCycleReport
      @theCycleReport 10 лет назад +1

      Plus, since I made that original comment, I auto-x'd side to side from a supercharged FR-S. It was great, but the owner had TONS of cash in suspension, brakes, tires, etc. Felt like a totally different car, honestly and furthering my point that just tossing a factory turbo/SC on it and charging 3 grand more is absolutely not possible, and isn't going to happen.

    idk why you guys always review the newer Genesis in the turbo everyone knows even Genesis owners the Turbo is terrible and its why they removed it from the newer years because it not only had Rev hang issues and was noisey and just plain annoying. Also Stop driving manuals theyve said it and Genesis owners have said it the Manual in the Coupe is awful. The 8 speed Auto has slight delay but its vastly superior to the problems with the manual.

    Its all personal preference. I own a 10' gen coupe 2.0t, and I'm glad I got it over the 3.8l. With the 3.8l that's what you get and can't do much with it unless your loaded, in this case I'm not, but have the 2.0t allows for much more modifications which can lead to having more horses then the 3.8l with less weight. Out of the three I'll stick to the Genesis.

I don't where the chassis complaints are coming from my car has such little roll and the seats are comfy I commute about 45mins every day and the only complaint I have is the wonky manual because it shifts best when you're giving it some gas so I look like a douche in traffic to get my smooth shifts. Stage 1 with short throw shifter fixes a lot of the problems they were talking about I have instant throttle response 7200 rpm redline advanced timing to run on 93 octane. This is how the car should have come.

    We appreciate the comment... In this case, the inspiration for this pairing was the wide-spread discussion of the FRS/BRZ as the best driver-focused car available for under 30k. So, we took the chance to show other cars which can be great to drive for similar money. If someone is only going to run errands, sit in traffic, and never be on a fun road then none of these cars make much sense. We focused this on the kind of driving that makes these cars worthwhile. Thanks for watching!

    It depends a bit on your driving style and preference. The 135 will feel much faster and more powerful, but it isn't as light or flat in the corners. Any maintenance costs on the BMW will be more expensive than the Subaru - not a downside, just a reality. If you were going to do a lot of autocross or canyon carving we'd likely say BRZ with Mods. If you're mostly commuting or taking roadtrips then the BRZs best traits won't be utilized much. Hope that helps. Message us if you want.

    The GC is an impressive car for the money, esp in 3.8L form. There's no question that it's faster and more powerful than the FRS/BRZ. However, as stated in the review, the FRS/BRZ are better balanced. We're thrilled you like you Genesis (and you might enjoy our review of the 1st generation 3.8). We also encourage you to drive the FRS/BRZ - ideally on a twisty road, as they are disappointing in a straight line sprint. There's more there than looks. Thanks for watching.

    The Genesis Coupe is for those who wanted a RWD Evo (it's basically the same engine design) While the FRS is for those of us who wanted a RWD Impreza.

      Warren Shehan Yes, you are right. But the tastes of a person will make them like a feeling to the other. I tried out the BRZ and the GT86 on road tests in Switzerland. And they are very close on all aspect. But I prefered the way the BRZ introduced his oversteering. The other way, he's trickier to drive and you must respect the road, because the road don't care of you.

    • @boboutelama5748
      @boboutelama5748 10 лет назад +2

      I believe, they said a real lot of realist things about those cars. I agree with your impression, the BRZ is a tad more direct and precise. But I really don't believe he would be as frank and direct to drive as the elise, for the simple reason, the power/weight ratio will help the elise to turn faster and accelerate faster. It's true, the BRZ could be a few seconds faster on flying tracks as a Toyota, but it can't score against the 980 kilograms of the Elise. A few more than 250 kg, is just a too enormous gap.
      Maybe if they make a 2.5L BRZ, it will outpass the Elise, but, really, I don't care. I must already be very careful not to drive tooo fast with the actual 200 hp. Police is watching and the fines in Switzerland are just the heaviest worldwide. Fact is, I have a great fun on the narrow roads all over the mountains around. Toy/Baru had a great idea. And there is no such funny car to drive in new condition out there for the moment. NO ONE ! Enjoy everybody ! Wish you a good time !

    I've never driven an Elise, but I've driven the FR-S and the Genesis Coupe, and I have to say I actually preferred driving the Genesis Coupe. Its' faster in every respect (even the 2.0T in tests and on paper, which is now discontinued), and it looks better imo. I enjoyed the Genesis Coupe so much that I actually bought one. Its' not a revamped model, but the 2010-2012 is still a fantastic and fun car to drive. It really holds the road well, and is actually the best car I've personally driven, other than the 2013+ model 3.8L (can't speak for the 2.0T). The only thing I'd say about the Hyundai is they need to refine the transmission. It really is sloppy and imprecise like they state in this video, but that can be fixed partially with a short-throw shifter and a weighted knob for a combined total of about $300 - $450. The FR-S is no doubt a great, and well balanced car, with a great transmission, and damn-near-perfect chassis. If it had a better set of rims and tires, and just a little more power, it would hands down beat the current Coupe, but in its' current state I just can't get past the terrible lack of torque and power in a straight line and when powering out of corners, combined with those ugly rims and terrible tires. To make the FR-S a better car than the Coupe, it really needs about $3k in rims and tires, and another $2k - $4k in a turbo setup, putting it well over the price-tag of the Genesis Coupe atm anyway. Just my $.05 worth on the 2 in comparison, having driven all renditions of the 2010 model Coupe, the 2013+ 3.8L and the FR-S.

    • @STMYL2525
      @STMYL2525 9 лет назад +1

      Kyle Anderson Yeah I have a 3.8 2013 and I just chuckle when I see a FR-S. I like that the Genesis is versatile with whatever type of driving you need at the time. I have the automatic with grand touring package so my 500 mile drive to Kansas the other week was amazingly comfortable with that interior. For more fun and short drives I switch to manual on the 8 speed.

  • @EverydayDriver
    @EverydayDriver  11 лет назад

    We're thrilled you enjoy this video enough to watch it again! And while we agree that the MSRP of the Elise puts it in a different league, the used price does not. As mentioned each of these cars cost about $27k at the time this video was made, which means that someone with an FRS budget could theoretically get an Elise... so that allowed us to put the FRS and Genesis against serious competition. Thanks a lot of watching and commenting on what we do!

      My car looks better and your car is pushing almost 300hp with a 2.0t. I’m in a naturally aspirated car with 200 hp and all I need is a turbo kit to push 350 on stock internals

    We hope you noticed that Paul said "ONE of the most... " as there are many great driving roads in the US. Paul is, in fact... from Colorado, and there are many great driving roads there. In fact, we've shot reviews on spectacular roads in the Rocky Mountains. We hope you've had the chance to drive PCH as well as throughout the Rockies - some amazing experiences for sure. Thanks for watching!

    Im going to have to tell you this. Im thinking about getting an FRS so bad I can tastes it. Test drove one a few weeks ago and I was hooked. I think its great that you guys did this test on the best HWY in the world. I grew up in San Luis Obispo area and I drove HWY 1 all the time. This road test the driver and the car. It doesnt matter if the the car is RWD or FWD it is wonderful. I have driven it with my Integra Type R many times and was just home in sept and drove it again. Good video

    Actually... we aren't exaggerating in this case. The Big-Sur section of PCH only has 2 gas stations in about 100 miles. During our shoot, Premium was $6 a gallon at one station, and $7 at the other. Absurd, but true. Especially considering that it was about $4/gallon in the rest of California at the same time. And yes, you are right, this is a well patrolled road, far more scenic than fast because of traffic. Thanks for watching!

    The Genesis Coupe's chassis is not on the same level as the other 2 cars.... its definitely worse.
    Btw 4 minutes or so of this video is garbage, specifically the aesthetics portion. Aesthetics is very subjective and very much a matter of personal preference. For those 4 minutes or so, each driver basically goes though what their aesthetic preference is..... one driver even mentions his least favorite color. Really. I'm surprised he didn't tell us his favorite movie and favorite food.

    • @GloomGaiGar
      @GloomGaiGar 9 лет назад +4

      xuimod You do realize the rest of the video is as subjective as the aesthetics part right? Particularly the driving feel part, they even disagree on some of their tests.

    • @xuimod
      @xuimod 9 лет назад

      GloomGaiGar But can't the viewer make up their own mind whether the color of the car is right for them? They can see it in the video. Its stupid to insert that sort of opinion in a car review especially since you can get each of the cars in a bunch of different colors.

    The Genesis is thr ugliest sports car of them all. The scion/frs are actually good looking yet those tiny tires are nothing but prius tires. The exige has exotic lines and its an amazing car to see on the road.

    • @SpyderRios
      @SpyderRios 9 лет назад

      Yeah and some extra power would be nice because otherwise wider wheels and tires will slow the car down even more. ^ I like twins but at what the dealers are asking there are better options to choose from.

      The GC is not a sports car... it's a GT coupe why do you think it's 100x more practical and comfortable

    • @DoomsdayMelody91
      @DoomsdayMelody91 9 лет назад +3

      There was no exige in this video, but I agree that the ELISE looks the best of the three. I honestly prefer the way the Gen Coupe looks in comparison to the BRZ/FRS, but that may be because every 17 year old has the BRZ/FRS. Either way I do respect them for what they are, I would just rather have a gen coupe, more power and more room (I'm 6'5")

    • @justahyundai
      @justahyundai 9 лет назад +1

      DoomsdayMelody91 People are just butthurt because the FRS is pretty similar to the old school Brit sports car
      But they died off for a reason, and it's because a GTI is 9/10 times better than that toyota

    We hope you noticed that the other Genesis coupe review was the V6 model and against a different types of cars. And the fact the guys conclusions were different on the two models would suggest they actually have no bias, wouldn't it? We appreciate you watching a lot of our work and welcome your comments.
