      Because Jurassic World is terrible. I don't need to watch a video about how someone "changed their mind" about it. As a fan of cinematography as an art, as a scientist, and a lover of real science fiction...it is physically impossible for my opinion of this film to change. It violates those three things to a level of pathetic absurdity.

    One of my most vivid memories from childhood is watching one particular scene in one of the original Jurrasic Park movies, for the first time. I was 11, I think, and had never been a big fan of "scary movies". It was the scene where the characters are hiding behind a waterfall, attemtping to evade the dinosaur chasing them. One man is startled by a snake, and jumps into view of the dinosaur, ultimately getting eaten. That one single scene, which I don't even think showed the actual death on-screen, just the crunching of his bones, scared me so badly, that I immediately burts into tears and ran out of the room. Cut to me seeing Jurrasic World, at age 15, and being pretty much compltetely desensitized to the countless on-screen graphic death scenes. I know it's most likely just a fact that comes with growing up, but there's just something about the normalization of very, very casual and graphic death scenes in movies in the past 10 or so years that's just sort of stumped me, I guess.

    • @RomanBearProductions
      @RomanBearProductions  2 года назад +1

      I also remember that scene vividly (it’s from The Lost World). I think it really has to do with the audio/visual language used to make it. There are just all these little things in that scene that make it truly haunting. The bone crunch that just immediately silences his screams and then the blood that flows down with the waterfall.

    I personally believe, if a movie sends this kind of message into the world, it has to be visible for the audience. The average viewer shouldn't have to watch a 53 minute long (very well made) video essay to see the meaning behind the film. Otherwise it is a great message that falls on deaf ears.

    For someone who claims to love JP so much, it's kinda weird he keeps referring to the dinos as "he." It's like a major thing that they breed them to be all females, even in JW. It's only after they adapt to start breeding on their own that there's males, and that def wouldn't be the case for the dinos in the 1st JW movie that are bred directly by the company.

  • @mynamedosntmatter

    I'm pretty amazed by how few views this has because it definitely feels like you put a lot of effort into a very well made video and I enjoyed the narrative of a rampaging dinosaur representing blockbuster films 😄 The trouble is that I always get a feeling of melancholy watching essays like this because it feels like the film industry in recent decades has entered a death spiral it can't seem to recover from and it pains me to see once beloved films of my childhood become nothing but half hearted shells of what they once were. Reading far too much into the meta-story at least makes it feel like something can be salvaged.

    • @RomanBearProductions
      @RomanBearProductions  3 года назад +3

      No need to feel too melancholy, I have great hope for the future of films. Besides a more diverse group of filmmakers putting out more main stream and highly acclaimed work, there are more outlets for filmmakers than ever before and honestly it might be a good thing if the industry collapses (assuming it’s like when large studios were broken up back like 60 years ago) but it’s doubtful since they’ve managed to make their properties profitable far beyond the film experience and until capitalism collapses (and we’ll see when that happens) they will make decisions to make films based on whether or not they can turn it into a whole experience with merch and amusement park tie ins. For now though, it’s just a matter of looking for films outside of what the theater is playing on a loop. Sorry for the ramble lol

    • @mynamedosntmatter
      @mynamedosntmatter 3 года назад +2

      @@RomanBearProductions I always enjoy a good ramble 😄 and I certainly hope for the best for the film industry at large. I'm just hoping that collapse doesn't result in tons of job losses for the huge crews and especially the VFX workers but it almost certainly would. That part of the video in particular really hit close to home because I have wanted to work on VFX for films for many years (and I still do) but at the same time I really don't want to feel like I'm just being rung out and spent like a disposable resource. It's not so bad though, I have a decently stable job doing 3D modelling and graphics for an advertising company but I do long to do something more creative and fulfilling.

    Giving a face to the expendable characters like the ACU and InGen humanizes the people that we barely see, that get stomped underfoot, that get forgotten.
    They are the people that I empathize with in blockbusters, not the weakly-written main characters.

    As a collective species people understand the causal change that they themselves create poorly which both Jurassic Park and Jurassic World parallel in their own ways. The biggest difference between them is that the latter adds more modern action and technology whereas the former relied much more on skillful setups to portray it’s theme with traditionally obscured vantage point which also plays into the mystery and thriller aspect only enhanced by the effects. I enjoy both films for what they do.

    i should not have laughed as hard as i did. bravo to you on a marvelous video essay! i had not considered this angle on the film before and your case is succinctly made. the idea of mosasaurus being representative of streaming services providing new, original ideas in the wake of blockbuster saturation is particularly interesting, and it makes even more sense when you consider mosasaurus isn't even technically a dinosaur - it's a marine lizard. while it's still a giant reptile, it exists _outside_ of the dinosaur paradigm, like how streaming services are still audiovisual media but are separate entities from the film industry. brilliant!

    In my opinion, the inaccuracies of the Dinosaurs are not the thing that ruined the movie for me, no... The thing that did was how they portray dinosaurs. Hollywood movies don't want to take risk, and by showing Dinosaurs as Hollywood monsters they didn't took a chance to bring something new. Instead, just put in a bunch of CGI Dinosaurs and make a cake out of every human... Because that's how Dinosaurs are. Also, they portrayed the pterosaurs as mindless monsters that would just crash into buildings with no goddamm reason. I think people overlook those things and the more you think about it, the more you realize how poor of an excuse, and how bad this movie is.

    I could be more sympathetic to the argument that Claire is supposed to be the woman who is wonderful and great but marginalized because of sexism if she was a more sympathetic character. The fact that she is successful at her job (until she isn't) doesn't make her a sympathetic character. Not anymore so than Chris Pratt (no one ever remembers his "toxic masculinity" character's name). She is obsessed with her job, is hypocritical and unpleasant towards the men under her (like the tech guy), doesn't give much attention to her nephews, etc. If we were supposed to think she is treated unjustly, she would not be as unlikeable as the others in the movie.
    But that is to be expected, because nobody seriously thinks this movie was actually intended to be a satire on the state of Hollywood films that intend point out the failures of Hollywood from a basically left-wing standpoint...right? Being creative and snarky and progressive doesn't actually make for an argument about the intent of those who wrote the movie.

    He seems like a smart guy with a vision, but his Jurassic films, especially Dominion, reflect something else.
    Does that tie into his cynical view of modern cinema? Did he write Jurassic World Dominion in the exact way Universal wanted him to in order to communicate the oximoron of "last film in a multi-million dollar franchise"?
    There was a trilogy stuffed into a dresser or desk somewhere that was his own personal, perfect sequel/conclusion to Jurassic Park and the Barbasol can..

    Now we're onto section 9 and we get to see whether the author noticed passing the Bechdel test for PoC. We get to see whether he knew that the heels were the actress' idea and whether he thinks her choice of "I can do anything a man can do and do it in heels" feminism should be policed by a male director. We get to see whether he noticed that the lead male character's only impact on the plot is to use persuasion to leverage the power of one female character (Blue) against another named female character (Indominus) through empathy and respect. We get to see whether the reviewer noticed that the indisputably masculine character spent the whole movie preaching the need to see the world from the perspective of others with compassion and an eye toward mental health.
    Survey says: Jesus, he even failed to note the racial and gender diversity in the response team. The diversity gap in the mooks is monstrous on screen, and it's critical as a representation of what's normal rather than what's exceptional. The had a woman literally centered in the shot of the team as they see Indominus and her death is treated with the same casual disregard as the rest. That's real progress, man.
    The take on the heels is a half-pass, I suppose.

    Alright so the US military does this thing where it pays people in honor and glory rather than money. Those who don't like that deal work as military contractors, and they insist on being paid in money and accept that they'll be seen as the dogs of war. The branding efforts are part of a calculation by the enterprise that it's cheaper to enhance the brand and pay people in honor and glory than to convince people to sign up with money. Similarly, VFX artists are often there for the honor and glory despite the poor pay and bad working conditions. With the military, paying people more would mean higher taxes, so in another sense you should be asking if you would rather pay for your safety in the form of honor and glory or pay for your safety with money.
    I'll suggest that the problem is much easier to solve when you understand that you're fighting supply and demand relationships and actuarial tables rather than malice on the part of the evil cabal of the military industrial complex. There may be such a cabal, but the moustache-twirling villainy is elsewhere.
    For the record I don't mind using big data to connect people with the jobs they would like, so the website/recruitment data mining doesn't bug me.
