This was great. Apart from pulling the switcharoo of representing the 90% (who just happen to be white) as "90 percent racist". The Populus, Directors, the freaking target audience. Apart from that... This was astonishingly good. And i think you're right. Steve & the writers aint no fools. I liked the movie. More than the first?; I'm not sure. But i liked it.

I feel the world movies aren't as quality movies, but their nonetheless still just as whimsical and fun as the park ones. Even dominion and fallen kingdom, even jp3. The hate they get is sad and misses the point imo. When people call jurassic world or fallen kingdom as monster movies or more akin tk super hero movies i cringe a bit because, well, its supposed tk be. Like he said the indoms a personification of i guess hollywood. Theyre movies that personify bad things in the world and yet use the exact thing its meant to represent as an insult. Its like insulting spiderman because its a super hero movie.

For one, all dinosaurs in these films with the exception of lost world and jp 3 are females only reasons they aren’t in the other two and some aren’t in the first one is tree frog dna allowing them to change sexes in a single sex environment however JW didn’t use tree frog dna as stated hence why they look different from other movies they were all female

The problem with the babysitter death scene was that it was random and just grotesque for the sake of it. I get you are supposed to feel empathy, but instead it felt like drawn out torture porn. That is why it has been criticised. I have seen other movies before kill off likeable characters, but they were written in movies where you feel like someone could at any moment die. For this one, almost no one really dies and looking at this from a plot perspective, it really doesn’t make sense, because no one else gets carried by those creatures. So the director just decided to go after this one character whom did nothing very dumb for most of the film unlike the kids. I am definitely not desensitised to violence because in real life I feel the impact of it. However, these are movies and most of the time, especially in monster movies, the really awful characters die first.

For someone who claims to love JP so much, it's kinda weird he keeps referring to the dinos as "he." It's like a major thing that they breed them to be all females, even in JW. It's only after they adapt to start breeding on their own that there's males, and that def wouldn't be the case for the dinos in the 1st JW movie that are bred directly by the company.

I love that Calvin and Hobbes exists within its own ecosystem, Bill never allowed his work to be taken away by anyone else and putting their spin on it like they have done with Garfield. This makes it purely timeless, something you can revisit at any time and recontextualise how you see it as an adult compared to how you saw it as a child.

Fantastic video. Though the “toxic masculinity” section was lame. The masculine traits you cited were (and this might come as a shock, so you might want to sit down) perfectly appropriate and proper. Being “daring and courageous” is somehow bad?! Being the breadwinner in a family is somehow bad? Too many boys nowadays are being raised to be weak, scared, and flimsy. Calvin not wanting to be a “sissy” is a GOOD thing. But again, apart from that section, this video is fantastic.

I watched FMAB for the first time ever just a few days ago. my partner recommended it after we watched ATLA together (his first watch) and thought I'd appreciate it. today I decided to spend the first few hours of my birthday before my family woke up watching a video essay on it, and im SO happy I picked this one. holy crap. you are an incredible and persuasive writer- the sheer amount of time and effort you put into this video is inspiring. im so, so glad someone else brought up that line about "survival of the fittest" - I fully paused the show and yell-ranted to my partner about the way Darwins theory of evolution has been historically misused to perpetuate that hierarchical way of thinking. when you brought it up my jaw dropped. I felt so understood! im going to read the manga. Hiromu Arakawa's work reignited my passion for writing literally when I needed it most, it's amazing that the manga and anime are so widely loved and appreciated. it makes me happy that you appreciate it so deeply. thanks guys :-)

I had a Webkinz tiger named Hobbes after C and H. I added more to my collection after, but he was my favorite because of my love for the strip. I always felt like Calvin and Hobbes chose me more than I chose them. My first book was Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat, and I just remember thinking. I don’t know who these two are yet, but one thing’s for sure. They’re going to take me on some incredible adventures. In other words I was attracted immediately. The snappy humor, the philosophy, amazing artwork and characters. It’s a gem

The only part I disagree with is the propeller beanie example. Calvin wants the propeller beanie because he actually believes it will give him the ability to fly. We see him imagining his travels through the sky with said beanie. Calvin frequently dreams of leaving his home & family and escaping the numerous irritants of his life, and his obsession with the beanie is based on that; the beanie is the first thing he's encountered that promises that escape. But he has no grasp of aeronautics and we can see from his fantasies every reason why his dream will fail before the beanie even arrives. Consumer identity has little to do with this example. It's pure desperation-based escape fantasy.

As a man that didn't do sports until 18, when I found climbing, I wish someone would've pushed me to do more exercise before that. Because life will demand a certain level of competition (if anything, with yourself), and you don't learn discipline and effort by playing by yourself all day. There's a reason sports are an ancient thing: it's a controlled competition, in order to prepare a man for the actual competition of life. (Most jobs require teamplaying, btw...). It's a much lesser evil to force sports on a kid (reasonably, obviously), than it is to allow him to be sedentary. The problem is, taking the kid to sports requires time and gas, and having him in his room with a console doesn't. And in nowaday's families where both parents work full time, well... guess which one is the more common. Also, it's never been true that women have to be 20 pounds underweight as Susie claims. If anything, that's imposed by other women, just like the importance they put on accesories and clothes. Men are perfectly fine (the vast majority prefers it) with a woman that is in her optimal weight. Sure, ads and films portray the ideal body, but that's as true for women as it is for men. Susie doesn't really have a point there (16:34). There's other things she could've counter with, but not that.

I’ve never liked the idea of having clothes, posters, or any other merchandise of shows I enjoyed. It never set well with me and I never really knew why. One day my brother talked about consumer identity and I feel like maybe something clicked then. I think I just never wanted to define myself through things. The idea felt so cringy or materialist or whatever. I want to be defined by my actions alone.

The two arguments that stuck out to me were about the VFX artists and the military. Giving a face to the expendable characters like the ACU and InGen humanizes the people that we barely see, that get stomped underfoot, that get forgotten. They are the people that I empathize with in blockbusters, not the weakly-written main characters.

9:15 Director Colin Trevorrow states a lotta stuff in a LOT of interviews.. and not all of it pans out. He seems like a smart guy with a vision, but his Jurassic films, especially Dominion, reflect something else. Does that tie into his cynical view of modern cinema? Did he write Jurassic World Dominion in the exact way Universal wanted him to in order to communicate the oximoron of "last film in a multi-million dollar franchise"? There was a trilogy stuffed into a dresser or desk somewhere that was his own personal, perfect sequel/conclusion to Jurassic Park and the Barbasol can.. But he's a director working for a billion dollor film studio. The worst thing he could do is make the exact movie they want.
