  • This discussion between Jacques Pauwels, Gabriel Rockhill and the participants in the Critical Theory Workshop's Summer School 2022 took place at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales on July 6th. It was, amongst other things, a book launch for Pauwels' "Myths of Modern History: From the French Revolution to the 20th Century World Wars and the Cold War": lorimer.ca/adu...

    I love the format of your workshop where each lecturer starts by telling his own intellectual "coming of age" story. So many fascinating lives, so many tortuous paths to get there... Thank you. I also love that you leave a lot of time for Q&A. I almost feel like a fly on the wall in your room. 😊

    There seems to be enough resonance between Paulo Freire's, The Politics of Education, and Jacques Pauwels presentation to amount to something to thank serendipity for. Kudo's CTW!

    Great lecture all around. Also I wonder what Pauwels makes of the current Pope Francis, who has been the subject of controversy as a Jesuit in Argentina. I imagine he too shares in John Paul's purpose to pursue ecclesiastical interests and assets globally. He's been much fawned on for his supposed liberalization of church doctrine, but in fact he speaks out of both sides of his mouth. No doubt he has some ulterior motive known only to a few.

    No fuel is right, but Hitler for political reasons divided the 6th army of General Paulus, leaving half of it at Stalingrad instead of going full force down to Baku and the oil fields. Stalin, unlike Hitler, listened to his generals ( specifically Zhukov), but others. Hitler (a megalomaniac and narcissist) overruled his generals and then blamed them, which is why the tried to assassinate him.

    The speed of the speech and the rooms acoustics don't help clarity for listeners at home .

      This video is not designed for impatient people. If you have ever attended a masjid, you will know that acoustics tend to be similar and the imam's speech tends to be rapid. Muslims and Marxists have much to say. We will not slow down for the distractable elemements of our audiences.

    Excellent lecture. Much love and respect in solidarity guys. But just one complaint. This four question package format, I don't think it works for the person answering it and it certainly doesn't work for me. By the time he answers a question it's forgotten. I know you're trying to find an inclusive way of broadening how many questions you can take, but I don't think this works.

    The problem I have with historical materialists is that many of them are not historically materialist enough. This area of left-wing thought rarely acknowledges the great diversity of evidence about what supports public good and public health. Economics is important but it's such a tiny part of what shapes our lives, or rather to the degree it's a larger issue it's in how it overlaps with other areas.

      Economics determines everything about us. I define economics as a discourse of survival. Economics is a synonym for survival, the business of surviving materially. If you want to understand anyone, just understand how they get their daily bread, it will tell you everything about them. This applies also to politics. Don't read speeches, just look at how these politicians get their daily bread. Bill Clinton sleeping with his secretary. Joe Biden committing genocide. All of these are about basic economics. Politicians wake up every day to get their daily bread. Politics is their business, their means of getting their bread. And they eat good. But the ideal world of politics is just a circus. Politicians eat and die alone like everyone else. They eat off us. That's Eeonomics

      This is simply false. Youre just making a broad statement that socialists dont care about the socio part of socioeconomics which is insane. Liberald are the ones who support a system that marginalizes literally everyone who isnt a land or business owner.

    As English is not my first language, I'm struggling quite bit to understand due to speed of the lecture and sound quality .. Professor Pauwels is a speed talker... What about this Truman quote : If we see that Germany is winning we ought to help Russia and if Russia is winning we ought to help Germany, and that way let them kill as many as possible, although I don't want to see Hitler victorious under any circumstances.". Can someone comment on it ?

    • @DMBtomp
      @DMBtomp 3 месяца назад

      Seems pretty evident to me, that this comment by Truman was about US not wanting a resurgent Germany to contend again for power. A little like US focus on preponderant power after the end of the Cold War
