    Marxism was Eurocentric and not representative of either the development of modes of production, the structures of power and the development of history from an Ethiopian perspective. Especially as we managed to avoid falling into European colonialism (we were only colonized in 1991 by the US) - and our ability to avoid colonial subjugation was directly related to sets of economic policies and an approach to pluralistic expression of power (hard fought in both battle and historical narrative) it matters. Marxists need to understand and respond to Ethiopia as a historical force that defeated British, French, Turkish and Italian colonial aspirations. And as an Ethiopian Marxist - it seems to me non-Ethiopian Marxists still do not

    One thing more I want to say is that in 1987, China officially proposed that during the primary stage of socialism (a very lengthy process, which Comrade Deng Xiaoping believed might last at least a century), our country should follow "one central task and two basic points," namely, "focusing on economic development, upholding the Four Cardinal Principles, and continuing the policy of reform and opening-up." The Four Cardinal Principles are: "First, we must adhere to the socialist path; second, we must uphold the dictatorship of the proletariat (later revised to People's democratic dictatorship); third, we must uphold the leadership of the Communist Party of China; and fourth, we must uphold Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought."

    In China, many young people, including myself, are very disgusted with the Western New Left (I mean those Eurocentric or American-centric individuals who side with imperialism), much like Lenin criticized the Social Democrats in his time. These people, in reality, only further divide the left and are good for nothing else. None of them have successfully established a socialist state or regime, yet they arrogantly criticize the Soviet Union and China without understanding the practical difficulties of building and developing a socialist country. Moreover, they fail to recognize that we live in a world dominated by imperialism, where hostility towards socialist countries is pervasive. These individuals might not even score well in a Marxist-Leninist philosophy exam, yet they pretend to be qualified to give misguided advice. My three comments are not related to the content of the video; I am just using this opportunity to express my own opinions. Carlos's views on China in the video are basically correct.

    Another point I need to emphasize is that the reason we embarked on the reform and opening-up at the end of 1978 was primarily due to the extremely perilous international and domestic environment at that time. If we had not reformed, socialism in China would have been doomed. We were being blockaded by both the United States and the Soviet Union, and had just gone through the Three Years of Difficulties, with reduced agricultural production and state-owned enterprises on the brink of collapse due to overstaffing. All these factors indicated that if we continued to follow the Soviet model (Stalinist model), we would not survive and would be subverted from within or without. Western netizens might not be aware of this part of history, but I must say that almost all major socialist countries faced this crisis sooner or later. The main reason is that we live in an era dominated by imperialism, and the economies of socialist countries generally had not undergone re-monetization. That is, we did not over-issue currency; our currency was strictly pegged to the goods we produced. Once attacked by external financial capital, we would face a tragic end. It is worth mentioning that only after the collapse of the Soviet Union did China's monetization reforms come to the agenda, because we witnessed the tragedy of our former comrade and big brother. We had to prepare in advance; we needed to survive and ensure the continued existence of socialism.

    As a Chinese college student, I can understand why many western left wing groups regard China as a non-socialist country. However, what I want to say is that considering China still a socialist country requires profound theoretical foundation and practical research. As Marxist scholar Samir Amin once discussed, he believed that China is neither a capitalist country nor a purely socialist one as many Marxist fundamentalists think. He regarded China as being in a transitional stage. In our own words, our country is in the primary stage of socialism. The basis for this assertion lies in the fact that all our land ownership still belongs to the state; our financial system is still solely controlled by the state-owned central bank; our public ownership economy still accounts for as much as 58%; and it forms the foundation of our country's large-scale infrastructure and macroeconomic regulation. The reason we can and have succeeded in poverty alleviation is that there is a smooth communication channel from the grassroots natural villages to the central government, allowing for targeted industrial support and economic subsidies. We can set aside short-term interests and regional benefits, using resources and funds from developed regions and provinces to help the impoverished western provinces. Why? Because we have a socialist economy, our economy is meant to serve the majority of the population, the workers. I read an article on a left-wing website claiming that China's significant economic achievements are simply due to its large population, not socialism. I can only say that the author of that article is insulting the reader's intelligence and mocking our neighbor, India. India now has a larger population than China, yet it remains deeply mired in poverty and social turmoil. This pseudo-Marxist leftist should be invited to India to serve as a government advisor. Perhaps he has a solution for India's crisis.

    I thorougly enjoyed this lecture and the subsequent discussion. I do not necessarily agree with everything Gabriel Rockhill has said, but having been "educated" in exactly the same period (albeit by the lesser gods), I completely agree with his analysis that during that time, critical "thinkers", as we know them today, have been turned into a sheep in wolves clothing, and this is merely a farcical repetition of those criticized in the German Ideology.

    I'm getting a huge amount out of the critical theory workshop videos. I've only been watching these videos for a few months only but they have very much influenced my thinking already. I would have liked more questions directed at Immanuel, in particular regarding non-US temporary migration - after all I thought the program is about his book. We have this type of temporary "migration" here in Australia I believe. There were over 150,000 Nepalese born people living in Australia at the end June 2022 for example. Five times the number since 2012. Most I believe work in the gig economy. Their plight I don't think are at all well documented. I understand that Raul is this really "famous" and "important" person that must be heard. But surely one can give him a chance on a separate program? Just a comment. I know a few Nepalese working in a local supermarket that I use. They have little legal rights it seems and I don't believe they get much out of the whole endeavour. There certainly is a large working underclass in Australia that doesn't get even acknowledged by anyone really living here.

Btw, there was an earlier book I think would also be of interest, as it is a memoir by a participant in the Australian affiliate of the Congress for Cultural Freedom. His name is Peter Coleman, and the book is called, 'The Liberal Conspiracy' (1985).

    Losurdo writes about Nazi desires to colonize Ukraine and the USSR. Is it helpful to see the current situation in Ukraine as a continuation of Nazi efforts expecially given that the US could have entered WWII on either side as you mention? It seems to work in an odd way as the West is providing arms to a hopeless cause resulting in the death of lots of Ukrainians and there is talk of Western capital investment (or appropriation of Ukrainian resources).

      Yes it is. They are actually the most advanced practitioners of ML. They have progressed beyond the industrialization phase and now they are creating new paths of socialism beyond the initial ML guidelines. Instead of trying to force a purity test in them, which is anti dialectical, anti Marxist and anti materialistic, it is also arrogance to refuse to acknowledge their development in socialist theories and practice.

    • @gelinrefira
      @gelinrefira 16 дней назад

      @@bowleggedbear the most important part about socialism with Chinese Characteristics is how the CPC practice ML in real life. The party holds the ultimate power in capital control. The most powerful companies and important industries are controlled by the state. Yes, it's state capitalism and there is market economy but Marx never said it has to be all planned economy. He never did and China practiced a type of planned economy that is a what I call a hybrid centralized-decentralized system. They centralized policy making and decentralised much of the execution at province level. It reflects their material condition of controlling such a huge country and the inefficiency at that time of full centralized control. They still hold the ultimate power in military, finance, basic industries, law and enforcement. Billionaires are allowed to operate so long they operate within the confines of what the party allows them. Anytime they overstep their boundary like jack "forehead" ma tries to make alipay into a shadow banking app to wrest capital control from the government, they hammered him into the ground and made him an example. This is pure Leninism. Xi himself is saying the party needs to go back and read Marx again because their goal is still Marxism and Chinese thinkers need to base their philosophical foundation in Marxism. He wants Chinese thinkers, communist party members to come up with pathways into the future of transitioning from socialism step number one, to step number two because they are increasingly in uncharted territory. And he is clamping down on reactionary forces and bourgeois corruption. How the heck is all that not socialism? It is the MOST ADVANCED socialism in the world, more advanced then the USSR at its height. They completed state takeover step, they completed industrialization step, they are moving into technological dominance step, they are going back to correct unequal development, they are in developing independent financialization from western capital step, they are in the later stages of completing military self-strenghtening to resist upcoming capitalist reaction to their rise. I say it again, China is the most advanced socialist country in history, and disorganised western socialist lite are trying to disparage China for not being socialist? Here's a middle finger and go back to read your theory again, comrade.

    • @linesofflight2443
      @linesofflight2443 15 дней назад

      @@gelinrefira It's certain that Xi will be disappointed if he returns to Marx, because he'll see that he doesn't live in a socialist state but a capitalist state with commodity production, private property, wage labour, market, classes, money, division of labor. I have to disappoint you and Si, the terms socialism and communism are used by Marx as synonyms, they mean the same thing to him, but Marx distinguishes between the higher and lower phases of communism (socialism). Lenin introduced terminological confusion here. Not to mention that Chinese universities don't teach critique of political economy, but rather neoclassical economics. Socialism (communism) certainly not. I'm afraid that in the case of China, we haven't even reached the dictatorship of the proletariat, let alone socialism (communism). I recommend reading Marx, especially Das Capital and his Critique of the Gotha Programme, and regarding the issue I wrote about and the relationship between Marx and Lenin and their understanding of socialism and communism, I highly recommend the works of Paresh Chattopadhyay.

    Is there a law of dialectics dealing with sudden qualitative change following a long period of quantitative change? Could we be approaching a sudden qualitative change, like the sudden demise of Imperialism giving way to socialism?

    Excellent, thank you. I think you are teaching me dialectic thinking Gabriel. So new to it that I'm not even sure but it seems like it is how you think. Thanks again

      I mean they are imperialists but if we are actually going to compare, the US and western imperialism in general is objectively worse

    Very good, high level lecture/discussion. I grew up on Marcuse's books. I've been aware of some segments of this part of his work, but not to this extend. Thank you very much.
