    Thanks for the review. I was about to pull the trigger (no pun intended) on buying this same rifle, and your review just changed my mind.

    It would be great to know did things get better after you install a new stock and bed it.
    Also is this the Night Train or the Night Train II ?

    I also have this rifle. I did see your video before I bought it. as soon I I got it,I pulled it apart and lightly sanded the area in front of and on the two plastic pieces. I then filled the area with JB Weld,making a solid gusset. Have had zero issues with the rifle. I pulled the scope off and replaced it before I ever shot it. it's been a good shooter,no complaints.

      Terry Swensen great to hear. It's just really terrible to hear how someone spends a decent amount of money for a rifle then has to go home tear it apart and spend time and money making it what it should have been from day one a good reliable shooter

      I did the same . Hope whoever designed this got fired from his job . I used JB weld and bedded it . Mine is a .300 win mag . no way in hell will those little tabs hold the recoil !

    My patriot is in 30/06. I baught it 2 days ago. I fell in love with its beauty. I took it to range this morning to sight it in. After 8 shots i had in in a skoal can size target at 175 yrds. I love it and its the kind of rifel ill hand down to my grand children one day. I was very happy with its performance

    This video saved me some cash. I appreciate this review. After watching this I went to a local gunsmith and asked their opinion as well, they said save yourself the headache and stick with a Remington. thanks again boss.

    Kevin,
    I really appreciate the feed back. Ya im glad you send mossberg a message they need to get the hint. If you hire gun smiths that cant see this is a design flaw then id fire all of em and start over. Heres an update befor i sold this rifle i glass bedded stock built up a wall for recoil lug and built up under rear tang then installed a real scope and was getting 1.5-2" groups i know not the greatest but better then the 8-10 just like the guy on cabelas. Any questions let me know

    I just bought the same rifle; although I can't complain I paid 550$ for it. After discovering a similar issue I purchased a new stock, which is something I was going to do anyways, for 100$. The rifle is a very good and accurate rifle for beginners or casual hunters. The longest shot I had able to make with this gun accurately was 800 yards, at that range I had an 8 inch grouping, which I was told is standard for your typically over the counter rifles.

    I bought one of these in 308. First thing I did was to take JB Weld and fill in the area behind the plastic ribs for the recoil lug, I also took Blue Magic Quik Steel and used it as a bedding compound for the fore end of the stock. I didn't like the way it flexed. It seems rock solid, am going to the range next week.

    I've had this rifle for 8 years and always shoot 3/4 to 1.5 inch groups. Mines the one with the muzzle brake. I've had great much out of mine. It's taken many deer out to 200 yards with off the shelf ammo. Once in a while u do get a bad rifle but 90% of the time it's operator error.

    Question, I bought the Patriot in 30-06 and after taking the action out to look at the block it looks as if those small plastic pieces are forward of the recoil lug and seem to be only guides to slip the recoil lug into place. They don't appear to be taking any of the recoil force at all. In fact the block is built with the forward action screw at it's leading edge surrounded by solid polymer backed by structured polymer to the rear. I'm wondering if some idiot at the factory somehow inserted the recoil lug forward of those guides because it looks as if that's the only way possible for those to break off. Even so, the action screw is set into the block so I don't see how it could be loose in the gun. If you could post a picture of your stocks interior it would help to solve a quandary. I'm wondering if the night train is set up differently from mine. Thanks

    +Joshlee Van hey man I just watched your video and I appreciate the review, I traded one of my cheaper AR-15s for this exact rifle in 300 win mag at a gun show a few days ago unaware of this problem so many people are experiencing with this rifle, I have yet to take it to a range. I was planning on doing so tomorrow but I'm reluctant to put any rounds through it now, what would you advise I do with this rifle, buy a different stock for it or just put different bedding in the current stock?

  • @nathanwilburn834
    @nathanwilburn834 5 лет назад +1

    No man your problem is your letting your barrel get hot and it will throw the bullets off your post to shoot 3 shots and let barrel cool

    How has she been for ya as of now? I'm thinking of getting one in Marinecote and get a thumbhole stock from Boyds. So I'm just concerned about overall fit and finish, how reliable it is and how smooth (or rough) the action is, and not the factory rifle stock. I ask because I heard one individual say their bolt broke after 40 rounds, but didn't explain what type of ammo they where using and all the info regarding his rifle, sounds fishy to me. But everyone else says this rifle is excellent.

  • @jvaness22

    no problem my friend. and get the axis 2 with adjustable trigger my 270 would shoot 5 shot groups all inside one inch with cheap ammo. it helps to have a good bedding job and the axis has piller bedding. very good for price.

    so do you recommend winchester XPR over the moss berg patriot as well?
    also thanks for the video :)

  • @evilcowboy
    @evilcowboy 8 лет назад +1

    Most of the issue you had with the rifle is due to the stock. As an option you could use a nice hard wood slab and cut a stock from it to custom fit the rifle. Wood working isn't really hard and if you measure correctly and base it off of the original stock for shape and size and then do a bedding job I can almost say definitively you would probably have no more issues.
    I agree the stock is not of a great quality and could have been better designed. But like you I think the patriot's with the plastic stocks can be made to be an excellent shooting rifle with a little work.
    Thanks for the video I will now take down my Patriot and see if it suffered the same issue. I have the black synthetic stock so it is probably a problem of the stock so I will probably opt to make a stock from scratch and bed it correctly. This also gives me the option of buying wood that I get to custom finish making my rifle one of a kind in the process.

  • @Beltmaker09

      joshlee van boyds makes custom wooden stocks for this rifle. Haven't had any of the issues you talked about on this rifle. Hold consistent half inch groups at 200 yards(limited on long range shooting in Florida). I think you had a bad rifle or something no issues with the scope or anything just dropped a big buck with a double lung shot I think you got a dud or something.

    I bought a walnut .243 , its a great gun for the price and love shooting it. When I opened the box the clear coat was coming off the walnut. Sent an email and said I couldn't return the gun because hunting season is here. I get an email 2 days later saying they are shipping me a new walnut stock. Good CS for that particular scenario. Nice Video joshlee van. Hate to hear of your issues though

    I know this is an old video. The Mossberg Patriot and Predator rifles do better in a Boyd stock with aluminum pillar bedding, or chassis such as MDT or the daughter company Oryx, where the whole aluminum frame is bedding. This has to do with the rear action screw guide on the factory stock, which has a gap that they refuse to change. The mag well is used as a shim. I have communicated twice with Mossberg and they refused to change.
    I like Mossberg for the barreled actions. You simply need to assume that you will be transplanting to a Boyd's stock or to an MDT LSS Gen 2 or an Oryx.
    Still a Mossberg fan and I have the 590A1 SPX 12 ga smooth bore.

    Im glad to hear you have no issues. Quick question when you buy the boydes stock ask them how there bedded? They to run no pillars or blocks i called them before. So you are really paying for a stock not much better then what you have. Unless there recoil lug area is built better. You could always glass bed it and do the same thing if saving money is ur goal. Now ur spending say 30 bucks. I just know for a fact these stock designs will never be consistant.

  • @jvaness22
    @jvaness22  8 лет назад

    Killking if you are talking glass bedding you can do either. Wood tends to benefit more since it is a softer material and if over tightened will indent. Neither stock will be a perfect fit until it is properly glass bedded for the action that will be put into it. Once bedded that stock will only be good for that action and will fit like a glove. And since wood tends to expand or contract due to moisture the bedding will also help eliminate this. But plastic stock are never a perfect fit either and will also benefit.

    • @Beltmaker09
      @Beltmaker09 9 лет назад

      To be honest the axis is not that great. The problem lies in the synthetic stock. The plastic stocks r garbage. Expect for my mark 2 22lr because there's no kick so less likely to break something. You better off if they have it spend more money get a wood stock or special order it. Being the wood is solid more thickness to take the recoil rather than a hollow plastic. Plastic only helps for weight but lacks because u take mor recoil because there's nothing weighing it down

    I need to agree with you the axis is a great gun for the money at least mine its a 223 so there's no recoil but it makes about 1-2" group at 200yards I also bought the night train in 308 and my biggest complaint is the scope the cross hairs go blurry for me atleast and the axis sells for 350 and the night train is 600

    I've got a Patriot Walnut in 338WM. It has a crossbolt on the recoil lug. I must remove the stock and check out the rear screw. There is a Night Train2 at the LGS that has been calling me like a siren on the rocks, haha. I might hold back on that one. The scope rings are ridiculously high though. I can't imagine what they were thinking when they cmae up with those. I don't think your rifle saw a 'gunsmith' at all. Probably some grunt on the shop floor just bundled it up and sent it back to clear his bench. Bad scene. Apart from the stock problems, there is a lot to like about the rifle. I'm not real keen on the noise maker (muzzle break) but it does look war-ry! I think I'd be taking mine off if I get one.

      the plastic stocks for these are just something for now but the wood ones are quite nice, the utg scopes are very good quality for the money and hold zero well but altho i love the 3-12x on my sks i dont know how it would hold up to .300 win mag.

    I don't know my friend if I was going to spend $800 on a rifle that I was unfamiliar with I don't think I would go with a Mossberg kind of like them for shotguns . my friend purchased A Ruger Gunsite Scout, Bolt Action, .308 and he loved it of course it seems like you are looking for the 300 win mag I don't even know if the Ruger comes in that caliber. sorry for all your problems with Mossberg

    Maybe if you where less fidgety your aim would be less effected. Why are you moving in and out with camera .? I have seen a lot of reviews on the Patriot and know a few people who own one. A few complaints but mostly good commits is what I hear.

    I'm not familiar with this model Mossberg, but the Patriot model seems to get good reviews. It is what it is. Lower end budget hunting rifle. I'd buy one for a backup on a hunting trip if my good one had an issue.

    Do you happen to know if an aftermarket stock can be purchased?

    • @jvaness22
      @jvaness22  6 лет назад

      Nathan Brown im not sure if its changed but boyds made wood stocks for these when no one else jumped on the train for after market parts. probubly better off getting a boyds stock piller bed and glass bed the stock but after all of that time and money invested to get to shoot on par consistantly and reliably for hundreds of rounds you would be better of stick with savage model 10 or something like that or like i stated before my axis 2 shot like a dream for the price. glass bed a cheap axis 2 turn down trigger pull and you will have a reliable rifle comes already piller beaded. cheers

  • @jvaness22
    @jvaness22  9 лет назад

    Think of it this way. You have to buy a new stock, buy a scope mine broke under recoil, the base isnt straight with the bore so you have to compinsate on your windage alot. The rings are way way to high see through rings in this plat form makes bi sense. The after market stock since wood should be piller and glass bedded. So basically.… a whole new rifle.

    That’s why I bought mine in a wood stock configuration and as long as the stocks milled right it should be fine

  • @jvaness22
    @jvaness22  9 лет назад

    Also if you really want to save money buy the axis 2 its hands down double the quality of the patriot in any series ya the scope sucks but put that vortex off the mossy on and you will have a reliable consistant weapon. Sub moa is cool but i want something thats capable of sub moa for the life of the rifle and the pillar bedding in the savage axis is worth the money more then the cheap mossberg. Those plastic pieces could brake and next time you go to shoot its all over the place and thats a chance i rather not take when i plan on taking game with my weapon

    It is what it is, as the old saying goes you get what you pay for. You shouldn't have to fix anything out of the box. I had the same experience with a Ruger 308 in absolute piece of crap stock but after some bolt work and a MDT chassis which cost more than the rifle my ugly duckling runs like a champ sub MOA all day long. Good luck getting your rig sorted out.

  • @jvaness22

    Ranger there stocks are probubly ok. But iv never liked wood personally. Its a soft material it can be over tightned on action screws and messed up. It also is humidity sensitive like all wooded materials it will expand or contract. Are these factors something the normal shooter should care about no. But to spend extra money for a stock that uses old technology is in my opinion throwing money away. I was planning on a long range precision rifle platform tactical which is what this rifle tries to be and fails in many ways. If you want to spend the extra dollars on a wooden stock go for it. But im just saying tou would be better to start off with a whole different rifle then if you are changing it from the ground up.

    Absolute liberty my aim is not the question here trust me on this. First off im not an actor and im very uncomfortable on camera, again has nothing to do with my shooting techniques. My trigger pull during my natural exhale pause is quite impressive compared to anyone i have met at the range. My shot anticipation is zero because i show zero fear of my rifles and their recoil. This is all trained shooting technique i have built over years of shooting. Also you like others are stating in general the "patriot" rifle. The patriot rifle has many reviews well yes you are right it does but how many of these are the night train model? Trust me very very few. Also the quilty of these rifles are so poor the scope base screws were not even drilled inline with the bore. My scope canted left like crazy from the bore. So in turn do not question my shooting ability question the lack of quality control down at mossberg.

    Basically the rifle has upset me so much after a new scope and 6 different types of ammo i have zero hope for this rifle and im actually selling it and buying a remington 700 LR. Let me know how your walnut stock one shoots. Like i said it could be model specific this is the night train 3 built on patriot platform. I hope you have better luck and i hope this doesnt happen to everyone else.

    Yes but i dont like wool stocks. If thats your thing buy it. Its also not the same model. Theres different patriot models we dont all want the wood one. This ones the tacticool model that fails in every single way
