- With over 94 million Costco members worldwide, chances are you know a Costco addict. There are Instagram accounts devoted to Costco, like @costcodeals, and websites, like CostcoInsider.com. Costco has even become a travel destination and - for one couple - a place to get married. Buying in bulk isn't for everyone, but Costco members love the wholesale club because it makes you feel like you're getting a good deal.
"Some of their customer base is absolutely addicted to Costco - absolutely addicted to the experience and the brands and the thrill of going to Costco," Patricia Hong, partner at the global management consulting firm A.T. Kearney, tells CNBC Make It. That's by design - inspiring obsession is all part of Costco's playbook. Here's how Costco gets you hooked.

Why You Spend So Much Money At Costco - Hooked
Why am I watching this? My country doesn't even have Costco lol
@@miaumiau8918 Haha, it's like a supermarket with a petrol station. But it's in the middle of nowhere & has no mobile reception (on purpose) & sells everything from jewellery, cameras & TV's to 20kg bags of seafood, food platters & children's playhouses. They also have a small foodcourt & a bunch of people serving samples of different kinds but everyone except the membership sellers & deli staff seem very confused & lost. You have to set meeting points with the people you're with and have a plan or you will get lost & over spend.
Haha, you never know, it might not be long.
@@miaumiau8918 You have to get one to shop there. It's like a yearly subscription. They say it gives you a lot of savings but I dunno. The petrol savings are the biggest saving.
Never seen a Costco here in Lisbon Portugal. Anyway i would never go to a thing like that, i don't like big supermarkets. I like things where I can go around without much effort.

I’ve seen people from my teen years still working at Costco. I’m in my 30’s now so that tells a lot of how they treat their employees.
Same here
No, I don't think so . In these trying times since 2007 job secuirity has been an issue. So many people don't take risks anymore
I just got hired into costco! i plan on retiring there. that really shows how they are lovely
Costco pays health insurance for their part time employees.
In this day and age not really
I remember the last time I went there, they were selling coffins! COFFINS.
Unbelievable... you'll be spending your money with them right til' the end!! LOL

My mom bought my brother's urns from Costco. They are very very nice and she saved over a grand instead of buying them from the funeral home. She got a large one and than like 5 small ones for close family and friends.
It's like that episode in Modern Family where Mitch and Cam goes to Costco, and they say you can buy stuff there from birth to death.
I bet they had the best price though...🤷🏽♀️!! I love Costco!!
And if you don't like it, YOU CAN RETURN IT.... no questions asked. LOL
I work at Costco, and they're a fantastic company. Honestly, the biggest issue with the company is keeping enough chickens for everyone to buy in some stores.

Costco is an experience. Literally I have so many memories eating samples, walking down the huge isles and reading books at the book section
Ikr? I once had a full meal just from eating every single one of their samples 😂
Costco is the only Retail Business model that Walmart has publically claimed that they cannot compete with. This is the reason why Walmart closed so many Sams Clubs.
Plus Costco knows how to treat their employees
theylied1776 great, I own stock in Costco
I live in Mexico and my family tried out a Sam's Club membership for a year. We bought cottage cheese a couple of times, the problem was every other item was identical to what you could buy in Walmart at a better price, the only thing that made it worth it was that I got a Huffy 26" women's mountain bike for about $70 USD. Which was the best deal I've ever seen on a bike, but I only need one cheap bike every so often, so we didn't renew our membership.
@@dunnotck1 You basically described the reason why I no longer have a Sam's Club membership. Costco just Does it Better.

I agree Kirkland products are way higher quality than Walmart's "Great Value" or No Frill's "No Name"
Kirkland brands are usually name brands with the Kirkland label.
Hmm. Good to know
I love their almond milk...
Love the Kirkland's toilet paper! Haven't tried the laundry detergent yet but I bought some to try yesterday.
I've worked in cat rescue for 15 years now, and I specifically joined Costco because others in rescue told me that their Kirkland brand dry cat food (purple bag- 16 lbs II think) is VERY high quality cat food. It cost more than what I used to buy, but I noticed the cats ate less, because (I think) it's not full of fillers, etc. No food dye either. My foster cats took right to it, and it's the most popular dry food in the house. (I STILL buy other kinds. My cats get to choose from FOUR kinds of dry cat food, 24/7, all in large pans. Plus they get wet food (canned Friskies) twice a day. And, no, I have NO fat cats. All healthy).
I was buying their brand name cat litter, too, but they've discontinued it. It was cheap at 8.99 (i hink) for 35 lbs. THAT has been really a bummer.

My dad has a coffee shop. When I was little, my mom would go buy 50 gallons of milk every 2 weeks at Costco and bring us kids with her. We loved riding around Costco on the milk bus back in the day ☺️

Yeah, I go only 5-6 times a year. It's a half-hour away. But I do use their online store more often.

I also think what sets Costco apart is the memories that you make while you're there. My father used to take me when I was a kid and being able to have free samples, run around, read books, and eat pizza made going to Costco a fun family outing. As an adult, I feel nostalgic when I go back to the same location I went to as a kid. There are some workers that have been there since I was a kid. Thats over 20 years. That tells you a lot about how the workers are treated.
I've been a Costco member since the early 90s. I have never thought about going anywhere else because I love their reliable products, economical prices, and friendly service. I will continue to shop there as long as they are committed to the above.

honestly, I am at Costco because of their amazing customer service.
I never had any issues receiving a refund on an item.
I only buy electronics at Costco for this reason only!
Their refund policy is brilliant because they make sure the manufacturer will give Costco full credit back. That is the only reason your not given a more difficult time on your returns.
It's absolutely disgusting how many people take advantage of this policy and think they outsmarted Costco employees.
Yes they will take back the movies you have watched and meat you ate and said that you threw out. They will let you try and return merchandise that was not even purchased there and upgrade your TVs. (Finally changed electronics policies after unbelievable B.S. returns for years). They will return your money as you lie about why things don't work right. However you will keep going back and spending way more than you thought you would. They got you. Like giveaways at casinos. "Just when you think you got them you realize, they got you"
Costco is brilliant.
Fyi, to those people that return stale bread on the reg and return garbage all the time......you are the people that are talked about and laughed at in the break rooms. They see you coming and laugh. Let's see what this guy has for us today.....lolol.
Howie Busse lol I don’t think you are going to discourage people who make ridiculous returns by telling them employees laugh about them in the breakroom. If the return is accepted it is almost always because they are following Costco’s return policy. Also the people who lie and make questionable returns don’t have that kind of shame.
Also they treat employees insanely well
Lmao something I remember is planning a school event and we had a 20$ budget for bananas and they were 1.29 for like 8/9 (maybe on sale idk) and we left with like 150 bananas

Kirkland brand is always just as good if not better than name brand stuff and always cheaper. Always trust costco
Tigerjk true
Not always. Sometimes things are on sale elsewhere and are a better price than at Costco. So you keep informed of the weekly deals in your area. That said, Costco is a consistently good value. Return policy is great too. Plus, they'll do a price adjustment if the price drops in the 30 days after you buy something. I got back too adjustments recently, $50 each (plus tax) for the TV and surround sound system that I bought (and the prices were already really good).

Daniel Iles ILOVE The Sample people and their tasty wares. I’ve got a 5 lb. container of potato salad in my fridge right now to show for that. Ahem, as well as chocolate covered açaí sorbet bites and Kirkland honey mustard snack mix. They got me. 😊
Daniel Iles 😂 lunch and dinner for me buaaahahaha!
I get the $1.50 beef hot dog and drink instead of going for samples. It’s filling, keeps me going, easier to stick to my list and keep my blinders semi-on (which ain’t easy). I’m not perfect at it, but I’m good at it enough to keep going there.
Getting samples would just slow me down, especially if it’s crowded. The last thing I need is to tempt myself with new products.
If I kept overspending, the membership wouldn’t be worth.
My parents are so loyal to costco!!! They will buy there TV, Furniture, Food, and sometimes clothes when there is a really good price😊!!!! But they are legends at ignoring everything getting what they need first then doing the occasional sample & "want" trip👌🏻!!! Man I love Costco!!!
I think the experience and memories are also a BIIIG factor for Costco's future. What I mean is that even I have memories of going to Costco with my family and being awed by the sheer amount of items, hugging the giant teddy bear, eating pizza and hotdogs together that I can't deny there's a bit of nostalgia and an overall positive bias towards Costco :)

I hate Costco. No one talks about the fact that people there push their grocery carts similar to how they drive: impulsively and recklessly. They're pushing their big cart slowly through the middle of the aisle (sometimes two hefty people walking side by side), are tempted by food samples, leave their cart unattended blocking the way to grab a sample, and when they see that you're trying to get around them, they cut you off and speed away!

WuzNab this is another sales strategy, you spend more time looking around the store to find what you are looking for. Therefore you might see something else to put in your cart while walking around.
...and I hate that they only carry certain items for a short time... as a baby boomer in his 60's who can still walk, it is exhausting having to go up and down aisles looking for stuff.

I went through the comments and no one said anything about their return policy?
You can return anything.
Except the produce that you don't see is moldy until you get it home. They are grumpy about that.
You can even return the membership itself ! True! One time when Costco came to our city they were giving out free memberships as part of a promotion and they told us about this. Well I used my membership for a year and returned it for $60 profit
@@goatgirl5968 We returned an empty container of apples (plastic only) and the receipt, they were all bad and we through them out. They gave us full credit.....No lie
goat girl I think that may been just particular worker that gave you a hard time. I’ve never had issues returning moldy produce.
I heard about a customer who bought a massive rib-eye steak, completely burned it while cooking it, and returned it for a full-refund on the premise that "it now tasted bad". Costco stayed true to their promise!
Omg was not expecting to see Joanday on here! Love the little feature of Korea’s Costco
The thing that absolutely infuriates me about Costco is that they don't have labels on their aisles. They don't tell you where anything is!! So you have to wind back and forth until you find it. Brilliant and evil Costco. Sam's club always has labels on their aisles
The wife always insists we shop at Costco. I have since called it Costmore.
Key to not over spend there is not walk in without a cart. You will most likely walk out with only stuff that you can carry.
Faz Naz Generally, I keep my list short. I can carry a case of canned beanstalks , a rotisserie chicken and a plastic tub of the Kirkland Signature Greek yogurt. That’s about the heaviest I walk around with.
If I really need more than what I can carry, it means more often than not, I’ve done price comparisons on items. It takes more work to keep the blinders on to prevent impulse shopping, but it’s definitely worth it.
@Jim W ~ Surely you don't mean "...per unit"??
@@lisac9522 Try their Smoked Whitefish Salad. Every pound/step is vastly more than worth it!
Oh + everything bagels.
Costco membership is worth it for the gas alone. The groceries are just a bonus for me (a household of two)
Dennis Xu true, I saved a lot of money in Australia by buying gas from CostCo. The gas is 20-25 c cheaper than most of petrol stations.
And you wait in line for hours for your gas which isn’t worth most people’s time
@@Daniel-ii6rq
My Costco actually upgraded their gas station so now there's never a line, even during peak times. 6 lanes and 18 pumps.
@Trinder3467
Based on how much gas I use and the price of a well loaded Model 3, it'd take me 50 years worth of gas before I'd spend the same amount. So yeah, no thanks
@Trinder3467
Costco makes the majority of its money on memberships, not food or gas. If you actually compare the price per kg or lb, it'll be less than most supermarkets besides Walmart. It's also obvious when it comes to service. Costco charges $45 for a full tire change with balancing, everywhere else is $100-$150.
Your shoe example isn't applicable in this case. That's like saying a pair of Gucci $3k shoes are going to last substantially longer than a nice pair of $200 branded shoes. Simply not the case. Neither is spending $75k on an electric car and using 'gas' savings to justify the price.
My mother has been working for costco for 8 years now. My mother had me at the age of 18 and never had the time to get her HS diploma, let alone go to college. She not only makes $25 hourly, but she receives benefits such as quality health insurance, $175 glasses/contact vouchers YEARLY, 401k, bonuses twice yearly, etc. Costco is an incredible company that treats their employees great.
Mary Lee It’s not as poverty as a job that pays the minimum wage and doesn’t provide health insurance. Benefits are hugely important.
I like it when I'm traveling because you can always get a clean bathroom and a snack.
And they don't move the merchandise around, like regular grocery stores do. Try to find the raisins at Kroger, for example.
Yep, love Costco! Generous with food samples & little hassle with returns! However, it does take a lot of will power to keep the bill low & reasonable.
I think one other thing this video didn't mention about people continue to shop at Costco is that their membership allows for return for used products at any time. Whether it's 2 days after purchase or 2 years.
That's genuinely happy/satisfied customers that can never be satisfied with store credits when Costco returns whole $ back to you.
I keep going to Costco cause for 5 dollars in Ralph’s I get one gallon of milk while at Costco I get two and many samples... EASY
Me: clicking on this video to find out why i spend so much at Costco
Also me: european 👁️👄👁️
Me as an Asian : what's a Costco
I LOVE COSTCO!!! I do 90% of my shopping at Costco! We have a family of 5 so we go through the bulk stuff pretty quick. I’d say, if you have a big family, it just makes sense to shop there. I don’t care about their marketing techniques either. All stores have the dairy in the back. I would consider myself a loyal Costco member for sure. I don’t see myself ever going anywhere else.
Hold up- Costco in the states have both churros at the food court AND wine????????? 😭😭😭
Mo n not wine!! but we do have the yummy churros
Depends on your Costco, but yea :) some of the bigger Costcos even have other sections you don’t get normally, which is always pretty nice.
And spirits in certain states. Nothing says a party like a 2 gallon ( or 3 liters) bottle of Kirkland signature bottle of vodka, rum and/or tequila. 🤣🤣. How you are going to chill that big a bottle is another question entirely. And yes I have seen people buy more than one bottle at a time.
@@katscorner9287 We do? Do you mean Canada (Sorry, I'm Canadian)? Maybe I just have to noticed 🤔
@@lilahb.8698 now I wanna go to a huge posh costco in the U.S. and Trader Joe's and Whole Foods!
treat their employees good -> employees treat the customers good -> ??? -> profit.
this is the most solid plan, everyone profits, this is how it should be everywhere!
Southwest Airlines is explicit about this policy. Employees #1, Customers #2. Has worked for them since the days of Herb Kelleher.
Costco sells bulk so you don’t have to go there 3-4 times a week
I love Costco. Every time I go there I view it as an adventure.
Look I love Costco but 3-4 times a week? They must love waiting in lines. I even tried going to costco right when it opens...its literally a geriatric stampede.
Self check out
Geriatric stampede lmao
That's my mom lol. She literally goes like 3 times a week. On weekends in Toronto, the lines are completely backed up into the aisles and it's impossible to walk at the front. They go pretty quickly though
i'm single and i never buy much at costco so the lines are a deterrant for me to go. the number of people on weekends also sours me from going too.
Bongo this video is stupid Costco sucks. They only have a few good deals if your a regular buyer Costco is really just the best for small biz owners who buy like chips and re sell them.
Seeing how it used to be before Covid makes me sad.. I miss the life before Covid so much
I have a family of 8. Just got our membership to Costco last year. I had been hesitant because of food sensitivities and allergies that it would be worth it for us. I shouldn’t have worried. It’s SOOO worth it. Big fan of Costco now!!
I grew up on the west coast and moved to the mid-atlantic/midwest region a few years back. I drive two hours to costco on my monthly trip. It's still worth it to drive to costco vs the 30 mins to sams club. I buy from people who treat their employees well, offer great products and stand behind everything they sell. Bought my wife's wedding ring at costco and got a heck of a deal that I wouldn't have been able to afford elsewhere. I catered my own wedding with meat from costco. Got all the dinnerware from costco for the reception. I wear mostly clothing I buy at costco. I get my moneys worth out of my membership and it allows me to afford things I wouldn't otherwise be able to.
I LOVE COSTCO!! I enjoy the quality and how the employees are compensated speaks volumes. I choose to spend my money there for that very fact.
lmfao that dude in the beginning is all the energy I wish I had
After making costco rich for 5 good years, I quit. Feels better when I think I'm shopping to the need and not deal.
Love Costco! With the amount of money that I spend there, I'm able to keep my per-meal cost super low, plus, my executive membership is paid by our 2% refund check every year.
I heard that Kirkland vodka is distilled at the kettle one factory in Aliso Viejo. Kirkland makes the best under shirts and work socks IMO. Plus you can get 48 rolls of double quilted Charmin Ultra for the entire gang!
Kirkland brand coffee is also just Starbucks under a different (cheaper) name
In response to the issue with Costco’s plastic waste usage; I argue that although they have a lot of waste, they also have a lot of goods to fit into that. Since consumers are shopping in bulk, there’s a lot less “individually wrapped” products in their store.
My wife and I are visually handicap. The Costco staff are very helpful to help us locate products. The fact that the font size are big on the labels had been very helpful. We are only members for about a year and if we know how good this is, we would have been members years ago.
Even as a single person with no car, Costco would be beneficial for me. I eat mostly the same things and cook everything from scratch and in bulk for the month...
I’m in the same boat. I wasn’t sure I would join until my sister and I found out we could share a membership. We have two addresses, they gave us two cards, one membership. It’s a benefit that I don’t know is widely known.
@@lisac9522 Do you know if Sam's Club offers the same policy with their memberships?
ponyboy348 I don’t know, I don’t have a membership at Sam’s Club. If they’re friendly like at Costco, I’m sure they’ll tell you on the phone.
One thing. Reading other posts it appears some Costco’s insist people live at the same address to share a membership, while others are flexible like mine.
It never came up as an issue, we just asked. It didn’t seem under the table or anything.
I suggest that you ask them about this before going there with a relative or friend. I really hope that my Costco is the rule, not the exception.
@F.-J. J. ~ Very well done. Brava.
Joan and Abe’s iconic Costco vlogs😊
People overspend anywhere because they have no self control. Make a list before you go. But what you need . That’s it.
Every two weeks, I spend $200 + but if I go to a regular grocery store it’s less than half of that.
