Start with the Output knob at 9 o'clock, that's unity gain. Your Output started an noon (which is quite a clean boost already) so you were hearing your amp's overdrive, not the pedal.

Never had that issue with it, but I run it in an almost clean amp, not into a OD/distortion so that might raise some noise?
