thats a nice box only thing I think would make it look even better if you build another should make it even with bit of black wood on both sides. It's a beautiful box
I had lots of errands, chores, etc. today, but in looking for a saved bookmark, I saw your 2-part excellently produced video about the faulted maple fly box. I decided I deserved a break & glad I made the decision to watch. Very well done & it goads me to -maybe not try a fly box or even pull out my hand woodworking tools, but to sit down, take a deep breath & start tying some of the flies I'm low on, or that have intrigued me for a while. I enjoyed your approach, readiness to transform a humble material into an exquisite piece of art. You will, I'm sure, enjoy the memory of making it, each time you're on a favorite stream & select "the" fly you have confidence will elicit a savage strike! BTW, I'm in Huntington Beach, California & my home water is the Pacific surf; I know of the secret reaches of the Pacific Northwest steelhead streams, but in a sincere query - where do you consider is The Third Coast? keep doing what you are doing, Bill Scrimpsher
@1elkhair Thank you so much for the comment and kind words. You have a gift in ellogant writing. Do you write an articles or anything for an outdoors or fly fishing magizines? My home is Michigan and some of us here endearingly refer to our Great Lakes as the Third Coast. Some folks down in Texas also try to claim the gulf of Mexico as the Third Coast but I say hogwash to that haha. Anyways, the state of Michigan alone has 3,288 miles of Great Lakes coastline which is more than the Atlantic Coast or Pacific Coast. The US has 4530 miles of Great Lakes coastline, and if you add Canada there is over 10,000 miles of Great Lakes coastline. The Great Lakes are definitely a point of pride for those of us in Michigan and I though it would be a cool unique name to call my channel. Speaking of Steelhead, we have some increadible steelhead fishing here in Michigan and even though they are not native we do have some river systems where the fish are now wild have are naturally reproducing. I know much of the Pacific NW steelhead fishing has really deteriorated and that is heart breaking. I dream of coming out there some day and swinging some of those legendary waters! Great talking to you Bill!
Fine work, and it has inspired me to make a box for my son (a fly fisherman) out of a couple pieces of mahogany salvaged from a boat I built over 50 years ago. Thank you!
That's amazing Ken, I hope you do build it and share some pictures. That would have some really cool sentimental value. Follow me on facebook at Third Coast Craftsman so that you can send me those pictures when you are done.
Great little project!, would have liked to see how you hollowed out the lid. Did the Danish oil cause any problem with glueing the foam inserts to the wood?
Absolutely gorgeous fly box. Great effort! Loved the finishing shots at 9:06. Nice flies also. Did you tie them? Thanks for the great videos on this box!
That's a stunning box and surprisingly so as it's pallet wood. I am gonna make something similar but just not for flies .... thanks for the inspiration
What a gorgeous piece of spalted maple, and from a pallet, no less! But one thing I'm missing... where did you find the rubber inserts for holding the flies?
Geeks Wood Shop I'm glad you commented because I went and checked out your channel. Awesome videos man, I subscribed and have a bunch of watching to do! Haha.
Totally get the fear with laying the magnets in. A tip I've given some others on controlling the break-away force of the magnets and controlling the lid opening is consider the placement of the magnets as they relate to the hinge and front of the box. The closer the magnets are to the hinge and the farther away from the front opening the weaker the magnet closing force compared to the opening force and the more controllable the opening action because you have greater leverage against the magnets. The closer the magnets to the front of the box the stronger their closing force and thus the effort you will need to pry them apart. So where you place them along that length can easily help manage the opening force required and keep the box from "flying" apart on opening. Also, magnetic force is greatly effected by the distance between the magnets, so counter sinking one of the magnets just a small amount more will effect the opening of the box as well (although the spacing from the hinge will be much easier to build and control than then depth of the magnet placement). Anyway, terrific looking box and I like the rough gouging on the inside of the top lid that was a great touch for a item related to an outdoor sport like fly fishing.
Rare Earth magnets are magnetic material surrounded by a hard but brittle nickel shell. If they are smacked together, they can chip or shatter. I recommend you bury the magnets just a little deeper (maybe a 32nd?), and cover them with epoxy to protect them from impact.
Wow! That turned out great! I found your channel recently. Amazing work and amazing videos. Keep it up! I’m new into woodworking and my first projects have been wooden fly fishing landing nets. Guess I’ll have to add a fly box into the mix soon.
Very cool. Where did you get the foam material, I am having a hard time finding any. I like the rough look under the lid but did you consider cutting it out and adding foam there too. That little router plane sure looks like a good little tool, what brand is it and where can I find one. Thanks
How did you get on with the foam inserts after the Danish oil application followed by epoxy? Did you have a hard time with it, or have they stayed on without problem? Cheers!
Beautiful fly box. Admiring great looking boxes is handy on those days on the AuSable or Manistee when the fish are just not biting. Where did you source your glue-in foam fly strips, please?
Lovely box. I’m thinking of making one of these for my son, but I don’t flyfish. Is the box big enough? Do the sponges do a good job holding the lures? Thanks!
This is very nice boxes thanks for showing this method. Is there any way you can put the measurements up. Thanks again. Can’t wait till your next project fish on brother.
Love the box. However, I must admit I'm a little upset that Utz had zero involvement. I noticed some things I'm certain he would've done differently. Keep it up bro. Love the channel.
Hi love the box, looks beautiful. I know u said this is made out of pallet wood but do u know specifically what type of wood it is? I love the grain patterns and colour.. thanks man
I was itching this morning to watch one of your videos and decided to scroll through to see if I missed one. Now I have seen this one before but decided I would watch it again because it was such an awesome build. What I didn't realize was how far along your channel has come with video, sound and music. Thought I was watching a porn with the music, LMBO JK. Loved the video, loved the work. Great job again and I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Beautiful box my man! I’m a new sub. Love the videos. Have you ever made a landing net for fly fishing? I’d love to see what you can come up with! Keep up the awesome content!
awesome videos! And there is a lot of great wood thrown away or burned in pallets. Stumbled upon your videos somehow and I've subscribed! Keep up the awesome work! Out of curiosity how long did it take you to make?
Good way to recycle wood but I'm not a fan of pallet wood. A retired truck driver said he has seen all kinds of chemicals, etc., spilled on them. The question is raised...did they still use them?
That's the nicest looking fly box I've ever seen
Beautiful fly box.
Great way to recycle wooden pallets
beautiful work mate !!
Beautiful job. Well done.
Absolutely beautiful. The spalting on the top & bottom really made it pop after the Danish oil was applied, and it floats. Thanks for sharing.
thats a nice box only thing I think would make it look even better if you build another should make it even with bit of black wood on both sides. It's a beautiful box
Love the carving on the inside of the lid. Nice touch!
Thanks Dan. Its usually a cool effect

Great talking to you Bill!
As a fly fisherman and wood worker I totally loved it and have been inspired to try my hand at one myself. Thank you!
Great box. Really nicely done video. Thank you for sharing. You have a lot of skill. Class Hardy outfit and flies too.
Very nice! Looks great. Woodworking and fishing are two great hobbies. Thanks for sharing.
The danish oil always pops the grain, but I had no idea it would make the end grain of the lid look so great. Great job as always
Thanks Howard. I definitely love the way this turned out too!
Really nice box man.

Nice build. Ok Looks very professionally done
Beautiful fly box and the flies look just as good.
Yea this is my display box. Just to enjoy looking at, too nice to take fishing. My actual fishing boxes and flies are in much worse shape haha
Truly amazing who would have ever thought a junk pallet would turn into a beautiful piece of art
Wow!! That box turned out incredible, very inspiring! Thanks
That turned out so nice.
Real nice work on that box
Beautiful work, man! I really enjoy watching you do mostly all the work with hand tools. Love your videos, thanks for sharing!!
Thanks Bobby, I am glad you enjoyed them!
Great little project!, would have liked to see how you hollowed out the lid. Did the Danish oil cause any problem with glueing the foam inserts to the wood?
That danish oil really made the spalting POP
Very nice looking box.
Cool box giving me an idea of how it’s done. Want to make a few for my son as well. Thanks keep up the good work.
Good job, I love that you up-cycled the pallet wood. I do the same when I can find some GOOD wood.
Really nice
like others im sure, this inspired me to make my own fly box, wish I could add a picture of what I created. very amazing video!
Max Gunter send me a picture on my Facebook page! I'd love to see it!
That's gorgeous, pallet wood is perfect for little projects like that and you really brought out the beauty, nicely done - Clint
An absolutely awesome idea to incorporate what was someone else's junk into something amazing. Way to go.
Thanks Blake, its a good feeling giving new life to something
Beutiful box. Would loveto have one.
danish oil is the shit. Awesome man! looks great
Looks amazing. Great job!
Great box and video series! Thanks for sharing and good luck fishing!
A fantasic little fly box and video, thanks for sharing.
I have SUPER cool ones coming up pretty soon for a project with Filson.
Absolutely gorgeous fly box. Great effort! Loved the finishing shots at 9:06. Nice flies also. Did you tie them? Thanks for the great videos on this box!
Hey Man... SWEET build! looking forward to making a couple for my boys! "imitation is the highest form of flattery!" keep making!
Beautiful little box. Think I might make one for my Dad for his cufflinks. Well done sir
Very cool build!
Love it. Especially when that Danish oil is applied.
That's a stunning box and surprisingly so as it's pallet wood. I am gonna make something similar but just not for flies .... thanks for the inspiration
Awesome to hear! Share a picture when you get done. Id love to see
Love all your videos
thanks Randy, the quality of the newer ones is alot better haha
What a gorgeous piece of spalted maple, and from a pallet, no less! But one thing I'm missing... where did you find the rubber inserts for holding the flies?
An amazing find that turned into a stunning box. The fish should just jump into your net out of awe!
Geeks Wood Shop thanks bud! I wish they would! I actually went out this morning for the first time in forever and had a great time!
Geeks Wood Shop I'm glad you commented because I went and checked out your channel. Awesome videos man, I subscribed and have a bunch of watching to do! Haha.
Beautiful work!
Beautiful box. Maybe I missed it, but did the magnets work out OK? Was the box hard to open using raw earth magnets?

Spencer Hicks wow. Thanks Spencer, good tips!!
Lovely box. Just found your channel and really enjoying your projects.
Thank you Kieran. Im glad you like what you see!
Excellent work sir! Excellent!
Thank you bud!
Beautiful
My friend has a fly fishing charter company. He just got married about a week ago. I'm going to make him one as a wedding gift. Great work!
That's awesome. Make sure you share a picture of your finished box on my Facebook page. I'd love to see it!

Im new to the channel but really enjoyed this project.

Hey nic, thanks so much and glad you found the channel. I definitely wanna make some nets at some point!
This is awesome
Thanks Taylor. I need to make some more of these to sell
I love it!
Just amazing idea, inspired to make one . Good job

Damn that turned out beautiful!
what is the general size of a fly box and what and where did you get the foam for the fly holders?
Beautiful fly box. Admiring great looking boxes is handy on those days on the AuSable or Manistee when the fish are just not biting.
Where did you source your glue-in foam fly strips, please?
Never mind. I found how to make the foam inserts in one of your other videos.
Great eye!!
Thanks man. I love how it turned out.
Lovely box. I’m thinking of making one of these for my son, but I don’t flyfish. Is the box big enough? Do the sponges do a good job holding the lures? Thanks!
Looks great. One question... does it float? :D
Great fly box 👍👍👍
This is very nice boxes thanks for showing this method. Is there any way you can put the measurements up. Thanks again. Can’t wait till your next project fish on brother.
I think 4 by 5 "
Beautiful...
Where can I get the foam that you put in the box, that actually holds the flies?
Beautiful box man! Looks amazing. What kind of brush did you used?
Love the box. However, I must admit I'm a little upset that Utz had zero involvement. I noticed some things I'm certain he would've done differently. Keep it up bro. Love the channel.
SWEET!
Going to try and make one for the boss, what did you use to hold the flys? Pipe insulation?
I actually cut those foam strips out of another flybox that I wasnt using, in the future I will buy the inserts which they sell online.
Nice work dude. Tie your own fly's as well?
Great looking fly box. Keep up the great work and information.
Nice job. What is the material you used to hold the flies?
Where did you get the foam fly holders? Did you take them from another box or can you buy them? Nice work.
yea I canabilized another box I had. I recently order some from CF designs but I still have to cut them up to make them work.
Amazing work. What size tool did you use for the carving on the top panel?
Im sorry I cant remember what size. Most sizes would look good though
Очень интересная работа!!!
Hi love the box, looks beautiful. I know u said this is made out of pallet wood but do u know specifically what type of wood it is? I love the grain patterns and colour.. thanks man
Spalted Maple and Epony
after you put the danish oil on it do you have to seel it with some poly??
No the danish oil has poly in it already. a few coats and it is nice and durable
Looks good, how does it look now that a year has gone by?
Looks the exact same. I keep it in the house as a nice decoration
I was itching this morning to watch one of your videos and decided to scroll through to see if I missed one. Nice! Can you make a Mission style desk out of pallet wood?
Why pallet wood? It's awful.
I don't know. I want to know if it possible.
Out of curiosity how long did it take you to make?
alaskankare probably around 6 hours. I made another one later on and it was faster the second time around
great looking box! where do I get the inserts - the things you use to hold the fly in place? Thanks!
I cannibalized some from another flybox. But also started making my own inserts. You can see that in my new flybox video
Seriously awesome work. Love your videos! Going to try and make one of these for a friend.
Thank you. Please send some pictures my way when you are finished!
Will do - do you mind letting me know where you obtained the foam inserts?
Good way to recycle wood but I'm not a fan of pallet wood. A retired truck driver said he has seen all kinds of chemicals, etc., spilled on them. The question is raised...did they still use them?
I could have done an entire table top with what you used on that little box. Nice waste of tongue oil. Other than that everything looks really nice
😍👍

I was using woodprix instructions to make it and I did it already :)
Turned out amazing
