I have a question. What is the name of the second word that comes after the verb? Is it called Preposition, Conjunction or adverb? And the second question is: Prepositions, conjunctions and adverbs, are they all called particles?
A phrasal verb consists of a verb and another word(s) to create an entirely new verb. The verb can be followed by a preposition. For ex: Look after the kids! ("Look after" means to take care of.) A phrasal verb can also contain a verb and an adverb. For ex: He looks down on me. (This means he thinks he is better than me.) However, it's best to think of phrasal verbs as separate from the individual words that make them up. When look and after combine, they form the new phrase look after with an entirely new meaning. As for particle, we use particle in language to describe a word that doesn't really fit in the main parts of speech or to talk about parts of speech in general.
@@loadedenglish9173 The second word of a phrasal verb can only be a Preposition or an adverb. So that means the second word of a phrasal verb can never be a particle. Am i right?
@@zackf1064 A particle is a very general term, like word. I could say a phrasal verb combines a verb and a particle. Basically, a particle refers to a word, but doesn't state specifically the type of word. Adverbs and prepositions have a specific usage.
Can you please make phrasal verbs with positive and motivational messages? This is almost disgusting. I do believe you can do it a way better than this video.
0:31 call off
1:50 figure out

9:54 freak out
11:18 miss out
12:37 knuckle down
