I made a comment a few weeks ago about my bad experiences with the Vertex Omega 130. BRS got involved and connected me with Adam at Vertex. He sent me a new pump and has gone above and beyond any of my expectations. I'll be sticking with Vertex in the future and of course with BRS. Duh. Thanks again guys!
Man. You arw the man. I have never seen a video explaing anything like you not even university teachers . Keep the good work. You are an asset to BRS. You need to start shoping to israel.
This is a great video and really tells the reefer pretty much everything he/she needs to know about how to choose a skimmer given his/her logistics and budget. I must say I am VERY pleased with my Reef Octopus Classic 150 which I bought many years ago and is still going strong.
Thank you so much for the time Lapse at 3:09 . I've been trying to argue the effectiveness of protein skimmers as a component to waste removal to my local reef club (argued agasint the price of course), and THIS time lapse is the evidence I need to show how effective they can be. The fact that you poured a cup of waste in at one end, and it collected out of the water and into the waste trap is exactly what I was trying to prove.
These videos are always great. One suggestion for improvement would be to spend more time showing how you install the equipment that you've chosen. The manifold approach is very cool, and it would have been nice to see more about it.
I really would like to see some inexpensive options tested like the simplicity and coral box skimmers who actually I think can outperform some of the skimmers in the video that may double their prices. Both of them are DC controlled pumps and sure are a bang for your buck.
Just started keeping an marine tank the past 4 months, Learning so much from watching your shows, find it easier to learn by watching & doing then reading, Just wish Northern Ireland had the stock you guys had :(. Keep up the good work
As always, excellent video. You've really helped to demystify protein skimmers. I especially enjoyed hearing about the recirculating option I've seen on some of the skimmers. I never really quite understood the purpose of them. I can't wait to see what you have coming next. Lighting is one of those areas that seems to have too many camps all screaming that their form of lighting is the answer. Good Work and Thanks.
How about taking a decibel reading on the protein skimmers cause I'm looking for an ultra low noise skimmer and also could you please make an ultra low noise (ULN ) series on aquarium equipments. Thanks and I like your channel.
These videos are FULL of great info!!! I've been in the hobby for only a few years and I'm making good on my new years resolution to get my tank on the track to being awesome. Thanks for the info and being a great company!
Awesome series, i signed up to youtube just now just to tell you that LOL. Have watched lots of your older vids as well (from years ago) and your presentation now is fantastic, not that it was bad before it's just that you look a lot more comfortable in front of the camera now. Thanks for the video's (All of them) we love em.
A tip here. No matter what skimmer you own. If you have too much silica/phosphates in the tank. They will not skim properly at all. If you do and lower will see an immense efficiency afterwards.
yep, real deal. ORP will validate also. When I see the 400 average dropping after months. Add the new exort PO4 cubes and after that lowers the ORP initially then climbs backup to 400+ and the skimmer shows so much for effluent activity afterwards.
Hi, I recently started following your 52 week reef program. really good info and advance so thank you. However I do at times get the feeling that some brands such as Vertex are be advertised and wonder how much of a non bios' review this is. I hope im mistaken as I do think its a good show but its more important for me that the information / reviews are non bios, non advertised and include other brands such as Deltec. How would you compaire the Deltec to the Vertex protein skimmer?
I really don't have a preference. I am using an Eshopps 120 right now for my 125 gallon. I need to upgrade that since I'm maxing it out. I like the Skimz after seeing your video but Reef Oct looks great too. I just don't know. I'm only using protein skimmer and marine pure with some rock in my tank and that is all.
i think this video is great as choosing your skimmer is always something that gets asked. i run the psk 150 and love it! is their better, yes but it works for me and does the job well
Great video. I agree with Ryan you do not have to have a skimmer to be successful but I do like using it. Cool of him to not say "Yes, it is a must" in order to just sell more skimmers. I replaced my reef octopus skimmer with a Skimz SK201 and I find Skimz to be a better skimmer - more efficient running, quieter and better build quality.
Love this video. I realize the purpose is to review skimmers that go in sump, however, in a tank with less than 100 gallons system volume the AquaC Remora Pro S and Urchin Pro S are exceptional. I have had an Aquac plumed off the return line instead of using a separate pump for years adjustable with a gate valve. It also adds about a gallon of water if you hang off the back of your sump. Skimate can be adjusted from a thick green slime to the greenish brown liquid represented in this video simply by raising or lowering the collection cup. Why no mention of this excellent skimmer with no moving parts that is easily the lowest maintenance skimmer out there today? I'm almost convinced to go octopus or Eshopps on my current build, but I can't get over the ease of maintenance and skimate collection with the Remora and how it just always works. Increased maintenance is needed with a dedicated pump and venturi or needle wheel in most skimmers. Thoughts?
Another great video! I wish these were around when I was just getting started in the hobby. Once this series is done, a newcomer to the hobby will be able to watch each episode and be very informed about almost every aspect of keeping a reef aquarium!
When the skimmers are all shown together in a tank , alot are running very wet , so of course they are going to look less effective. also skimmer cups are different sizes etc
I have learned so much from BRS videos, thank you! I just added the Octo Classic hang on back skimmer to my 75 gallon tank and it works well. However, I am disappointed at how it aesthetically detracts from the beauty of the aquarium. Is there a way to add pvc extensions and lower it down some so it does not stick up over the top of the tank? I am sure the modification will nullify the warranty but it would be worth it to me. Thank you.
Great video for beginners. Would you please tell us the what is feed pump used for the recirculating protein skimmer shown in the video, what is the capacity of the reefoctopus recirculating skimmer (i.e. 110 model or 150 or 200 model) needed for 160gallon tank, what does the term filtration handling in the specification means like- Filtration Handling 180 Gallon - Light Filtration Demand 150 Gallon - Medium Filtration Demand 120 Gallon - Heavy Filtration Demand and also any best picks for the feed pumps. Please comment the answer.
I am setting up a red sea reefer 250. What are the two skimmers you would recommend. Getting to the point where so many choices is making it hard lol. looking for a good quiet model that you would use in your tank.👍 thanks
Thanks for the video. What is a good Skimmer for someone new to hobby like me with a 60 gallon tank with no space for sump. Are there skimmers you can hang to tanks, I can't drill hose on my tank, have no space for sump. Thank you for your help and video
Also would a dc pump be a better choice for this manifold? I was looking at a Jabeo dc return pump just because the price was reasonable and controllability. do you have any experience with pumps? And what would be the best choice with out breaking the wallet? Thank you again I love the videos and input is highly appreciated.
Hey Ryan, would have been nice if you got into some details on tuning the skimmer. You reference it a couple of times in the video but did not get into in the final setup. Would have been good to get your input on recommended sump levels, water levels in the skimmer, bubble production, etc.
How did you connect the skimz to the manafold. Did u have to use the pump or is it strictly fed from the return pump? Also with running a manafold like yours do you have to have a doc pump that is controllable? And what would be a good estimate for amount of power extra in the return pump to supply the manafold and the tank?
Question. When I first built and assembled my first tank, I went with the 1up theory. I purchased a Deltec SC2060, and I have a feeling it may be too big for an overstocked 150. What are your views on Deltec and the model I currently use for my tank?
I'm looking to set up a 90G reef tank in the near future and beginning research on protein skimmers. This tank is going to be in a living room, what is the quietest internal skimmer that would work for this application? Also, what sumps do you prefer? Trigger Systems or Skimz? Thank you!
Thank you for your reply, its much appreciated. What return pump would you recommend for this set up, where quiet operation is of the highest importance.
Why did you decide to have you refugium before your skimmer section? I currently have my skimmer > refugium > return and tend to skim some pods. Im in the process of upgrading (thanks to BRS black friday :) and am designing a sump and looking for different options. Currently thinking Skimmer > Refugium > return VS Skimmer > Return > Refugium.
How do you guys stand on using a twin setup? for example: on an 800 liter system, run 2 Deltec sc1456 instead of 1 Reef Octopus XP2000. This because of height constraints (max 59mm including cup removal).
Hello I'm new to the hobby and in the process of putting together my 1st saltwater 75 gallon tank i also just bought a sump the dimensions of the sump are 24Long ×17 height 13wide and will I need a skimmer and if so which one would you recommend for my system something quiet an effective thanks in advance
I have a question that I can't really find a reliable answer for.... I have a 135 gallon reef tank w a bubble magus curve 7..... I was thinking of upgrading and I have come across some nice skimmers for a good price however they are usually way oversized for my tank.... Is it ok to go way bigger as long as the sump can hold the skimmer or best to stay one size above tank volume?
As a BRS, which would you suggest to buy between Reef Octopus Blaster RO-RPS-5000ext (2500 liters) and Reef Octopus Regal 250 ext (2500 liters)? I have a combined 500 L tanks (2 display tanks with 1 Sump), I'm looking for a skimmer that quiet enough to operate in a bed room and giving out a good skimmate.
I have a red sea reefer nano on order. What is the best skimmer you recommend for this system? I am planning on a bare bottom sps setup at least at this time, but that may change once I plan the layout of the tank. I'm not overly worried on the price I just want the best that I can fit in this bad boy. I was looking at the skimz sn143. Is this a skimmer you would recommend for this setup?
I'm confused as to why you need your return pump to supply water to the Protein Skimmer. I am assuming it is required that you use the pump that came with it to pull in air and I thought that would cause the skimmer to pull in water from the Sump, or No??
Looking to upgrade my skimmer, I have a Red Sea max 650 and currently run a Hydor recirculating because the tank has the option to feed the skimmer directly from the return pump. Doesn't have to be recirculating but I like them, plus the space for the skimmer in the 650 isn't the biggest so they save space. But my biggest pet peeve with skimmers is the noise. Which out of the brands you offer would be the quietest?
Hey BRS got some white particle build up in my water I assume calcium or bacteria not to fussed which is better for my IM nano 20 > Innovative marine _ ghost or skimmate / wondered if the ghost was worth the extra money or if it was just for the looks cheers
Sadly they are in my display tank, it sits on the live rock, does not dissolve when disturbed, most is sand luckily hehe !! I have a large LPS so if it's calcium I assume that will go eventually Uhm
You didn't say anything about gravity feed skimmers. I am setting up a orca systems skimmer 250. I set it up with a gravity feed, I haven't run it yet but I cannot find anything on this skimmer so I don't know the ideal setup for it.
I have an Orca systems 250 Skimmer, its rated 300-800gal I guess. Sense they don't make this skimmer anymore im having issues finding anything on them. Most people have a pump set up to them verses gravity fed. The guy I got it from had one outlet feeding the skimmer, I want to feed it with both. I don't know if it will be to much flow.
Doesn't a cone shape tend so speed up the rise of bubbles to the collection cup? Necking down a flow area increases the speed. Curious of cone shape decreases dwell time (bad thing) or increases the speed of bubbles to the cup before they pop?
I was also planning on using the marine pure as a skimmer stand but was wondering if the skimmer would also destroy the 4" thick marine pure block if I was to cut the block down to 2"?
What type of skimmer would you recommend for a c-Vue all in one set up? I have the 45 gallon version, and I am discovering that my equipment options are pretty limited.
So...you mentioned you took out the marine pure blocks due to them being destroyed by the skimmer...I'd like to add these to my tank, but already have a slimmer, should I not have both then? Could you briefly explain what you meant by them being destroyed?
Hi I am a fresh water guy and want to switch to salt water. I have people telling me that I have to have a skimmer but as far as I can see a skimmer has the same properties as a canister filter. My question is that if I run two canister filters whit carbon and the rest would it do the job? Off course if it is cleaned regularly. Thank you for the answer.
What do you think of bubble magus curve 9 Protein Skimmer? I have a 120 gallon fowlr setup is this to big for my tank or is going to cut down on my water changes as iam doing water changes 40% every week
Okay that's great I will get the bubble Magus Curve 7 instead thankyou for your advice I have a community fowlr setup I have 4 green chromis 1 orange butterfly fish 1 yellow tang 2 pyjama Cardinals 2 clownfish 1 royal grammar 1 goby 1 red velvet wrasse 1 coral beauty and red tip star fish and I fed them 3 time a day with mysis shrimp garlic brime shrimp or brine shrimp with spirulina plus I do give them green marine algae seaweed with natural garlic extract I do have a video on RUclips of all my fish I would love it if you took a look and tell me what you think I have only been in the hobby it will be a year on the 7th of September 2018 and thankyou to Ryan for doing the brstv 52 weeks of reefing I watch that before I start my video is all my fish Christian
Hi, I've got two things, my current skimmer isn't exactly working, instead of pulling out foam, the skimmer keeps pulling out water, is it broken? Also because if this reason I'm thinking of getting a new skimmer that's rated for 200 gallons. My tank size is 90 gallons, is this overkill? I'm a heavy feeder so think it's a good idea. Thanks :)
Hi, I have a fairly small sump and wanted to use a reef octopus hang on skimmer on the sump and leave space for a refugium. Do you think I should do that, or sacrifice the refugium and get an in sump skimmer? I've heard in sump skimmers are more effective the hang ons.
do you guys think having a underrated skimmer on a bigger tank gives good results? my reef octopus 150 int performs way better on my 150 gallon than it did on my 75 gallon reef. on the 75 its was oversized, on my 150 its undersized. since its performing so well, I decided not to upgrade it for now.
Great video, and great series! Unfortunately I've just bought a new skimmer, a Nyos Quantum 160, but I have some troubles getting it to perform good. I have always been told, to open the air valve as much as possible, but you say, it needs to be fine tuned too. When do I know, when it is in the right setting? :-)
Hi I had a question about setting up a brand new reef tank, so I have a 30 gallon tank with live rock and sand and a sump that's about 20 gallons, I plan to have a refugium and A protein skimmer and there I guess my question is when cycling the tank do I need to start the refugium and a protein skimmer from the get-go or wait till I have it cycled and then add the cheito and skimmer thanks.
Andrew Hales ----right.....? I literally DO NOT know wtf I would do without their videos/products/website. It's insanely cohesive and I trust their opinions. They don't scam you for money.... I could go on and on lol
Hey there - alright so I bought the Reef Octopus 110INT and am having a devil of a time getting it adjusted- it's been running for about a month so I'd assume its broken in at this point...but having trouble getting it so the foam is just trickling over: seems to always either be too much flow, or not enough....and it seems to REALLY have a tough time if it's base is under any more than 6" of water: any suggestions?
+BulkReefSupplyCom It's on the reefer 250, so a 54 gallon display with an 11 gallon (I think) sump. I only have 2 clown fish in it, so it's being fed VERY lightly, every other day. Just added the first couple of clean up crew members to going to feed a little more now to make sure they get a little something too, so maybe that will help. It definitely hasn't been pulling much muck out of the water so far, since there hasn't really been any.
Great videos - Honestly the BRS Team deserves/gets a lot of credit for my reefing success. Ryan, curious if the BRS Team has any experience with LifeReef skimmers and sumps. They have been in business a long time, very knowledgeable, and have quality components. I just haven't seen many reviews and and would like to know as much as possible before I spent $1K on a skimmer and sump system. Thanks!
I have a 40gal I got at petsmart or wherever on the $1/gal sale. We move every few years so tank is big enough, will expand one day... Which plays into sump/skimmer size. I'd like to only buy them once, instead of upgrade later. I don't have fish, maxi-mins, acans and zoas - not much bio load now. But eventually I'd like a 120 gal system. I like the idea of systems designed to work together instead of guessing if things will fit.
I am working on a or 90 gallon cube build. I want to run a recirculating skimmer of the manifold and Possible some reactors latter on. With recirculating skimmers on a mani fold, you would only need to run the air intake pump? And not the water feed pump. Right? So what size pump would you recommend to be able to feed tank, skimmer? And latter on I can add some reactors? Thank you so much for the input. I think the manifold is a great idea to cut back on a few pumps in the tank...
Honestly, pretty severe space limitations. The most space I have is a 11x11 square with 20 inches in height. I’d love a sump but I don’t think I can fit one in there.
Hi, I have the reef octopus skimmer at time 7:10. On the white air silencer cap attached to the red pipe there or 2 little pipes. Does the white air hose going in the red pipe connect to one, both or none of the two tubes? Thanks a lot.
I'm looking for a hang on the back protein skimmer for my 60gal tank,I am not going to be setting up a sump. So looking for a good hang on the back. What would you guys recommend?
I'd recommend taking a look at something like the Reef Octopus Classic 90 HOB skimmer. Reef Octopus has been making this model for a very long time and as you can tell by the reviews, the feedback is overwhelmingly positive. www.bulkreefsupply.com/reef-octopus-classic-90-hang-on-back-protein-skimmer.html
what kind of skimmer would you suggest for a 50 gal. innovative marine fusion tank. I was thinking of a hang on type. I feel i made need something stronger than the ghost skimmers that fit inside? Maybe i am wrong
Great video, I don't run one on my nano tank because I change about 25-30% of the water every 3-4 weeks but it is cool to learn more about them. With a nano tank a $30 bag of salt will last me more then a few months so like you said in the video regular changes aren't a big deal. Are you going to do a video with any kind of media reactor? I have been thinking about one for my tank.
Was looking into marinepure blocks after seeing them in this series, some are claiming a leaching of aluminum into the water from them. Interest in your thoughts and findings on this.
+BulkReefSupplyCom I put (some of my) marine pure spheres in my sump baffles between refugium and return where they get the highest flow. good/bad idea?
You said the skimmer would "destroy" the marine pure plates?? I am new to salt water aquariums. My sump design is my tank water comes into the skimmer chamber first, then into my chamber with marine pure plates, then in my return chamber...Is that ok/correct?
I just build my own skimmers, let's be honest, skimmer prices are honestly not worth the material they are made off, yes they save a lot of money on the maintenance over time, but do they honestly have to cost $250+?. home made skimmers might not look as cool, but if they work, who cares? I save a ton of money and it is hidden in my sump anyway. Thanks for the video, got loads of ideas on my next skimmer build :)
hey guys- regarding skimmers in a reef tank: is there any advantage to buying a larger skimmer than what you need for the amount of gallons in your tank? i.e.- i have a 75 gallon, and i buy a skimmer for say, rated for a 125-200gal? (just an example)
Okay so I feel my tank is getting out of hand I'm sure this is normal but I'm getting rust/neon yellow algae/diatoms all over my tank areas with high flow/no light have none __ sand bed kept clean by goby luckily. 0ammonia 0nitrite __ .1 nitrate I'm bringing that down constantly... My issue I clean every day but it's getting worse per day will this go away do I need to do something different ? :/
As you would expect my tank is 3months old, my LPS is looking extremely healthy I've cleaned the tank today and with 10% change my nitrate is down to nearly zero hopefully the diatoms will clear off soon! Live rock is covered at the moment haha
+BulkReefSupplyCom Do you have any recommendation or opinion in reference to wet skimming? I'm new to saltwater tanks, and it looks like an good way to do water changes. Thanks!
Possibly the best video yet, and that says a lot! Down to Earth logical delivery of the information. Week after week, you guys are the best!

Awesome series and channel by the way! I Watch every week and I am getting tons of usable info and tips for my new tank.
Has nobody heard of lifereef skimmers? By far the best imo
that moment when you realized you missed a week of the #BRS160 series and now have two episodes to watch XD
Great Video BRS team! KEEP UP THE GREAT VIDEOS.
Ryan rocking it again. You guys put out another great video.
What did you mean by, the skimmer would destroy the marine blocks? Did you mean physically destroy them or just the cleaning capacity?
good video. skimmers are much quieter than they use to be.
+Dee From Brooklyn Yes they are. My new Reef Octopus 150 is nearly silent compared to my old one.
Awesome series, i signed up to youtube just now just to tell you that LOL.
Have watched lots of your older vids as well (from years ago) and your presentation now is fantastic, not that it was bad before it's just that you look a lot more comfortable in front of the camera now.

Deltec? They’re like DOC removal gods. Btw your knowledge on reefing is crazy
I wish I could higher you guys to come to my house to fix the mess I have at home...you guys are very impressive

Great watch, I bought a skimz 123 dc, only dc skimmer under $200 so far so good !!
I think that you are confused by my long question. Please name the pump shown at 10:37 of this video.

Can you recommend a good skimmer that I can hang on my tank like I do with my filter? I have a 29 gallon bowfront saltwater fowlr.
Thx for another great vídeo. But i would like to hear ur thougts on hob or internal skimmers.
Great video man,. You know your crazy about the hobby when you call a pimp cute lol
Thanks for all the information!
What return pump would you recommend for this set up, where quiet operation is of the highest importance.
this series is the best
Why did you decide to have you refugium before your skimmer section? I currently have my skimmer > refugium > return and tend to skim some pods. Im in the process of upgrading (thanks to BRS black friday :) and am designing a sump and looking for different options. Currently thinking Skimmer > Refugium > return VS Skimmer > Return > Refugium.
How do you guys stand on using a twin setup?
for example: on an 800 liter system, run 2 Deltec sc1456 instead of 1 Reef Octopus XP2000.
This because of height constraints (max 59mm including cup removal).
+Steffan Greven must be 590mm ofcourse.
if using a biopelet reactor, should you up size the protein skimmer as well to handle the added bioload?
+BulkReefSupplyCom awesome thanks!!!
Ok, the 143 was what i was looking at honestly. I will probably go that route. Thank you!
So, is it possible to keep plankton in a system with a skimmer? Any skimmer that won't skim the plankton and will really filter?
Thanks, great series.
Why was it 'obvious' that the skimmer would destroy the Marine Pure Plates? I was thinking about getting some to sit my skimmer on.
At 1:30 what brand of siphon is that. Ty
great video! any recommendations regarding hang-on-back skimmers for a 20 gallon tank
+BulkReefSupplyCom great! thanks for your help!
Take a look at the skimmer options from Tunze. Out of all of the nano options, their skimmers are some of our favorites.
Thanks :)
+Spartanboss from what I read across the forums these days their isn't much need to greatly oversize a skimmer.
Hi, I have a fairly small sump and wanted to use a reef octopus hang on skimmer on the sump and leave space for a refugium. Do you think I should do that, or sacrifice the refugium and get an in sump skimmer? I've heard in sump skimmers are more effective the hang ons.
+BulkReefSupplyCom Thanks :)
do you guys think having a underrated skimmer on a bigger tank gives good results? my reef octopus 150 int performs way better on my 150 gallon than it did on my 75 gallon reef. on the 75 its was oversized, on my 150 its undersized. since its performing so well, I decided not to upgrade it for now.
yes, that's why I also have an algea scrubber to help export nutrients. thanx for the reply.
Hi, is there any advantage to having a skimmer that has far more gallon range to the actual gallons you have in your tank?
I Love BRS TV!!!
LOVE YOUR CHANNEL TOO!
Andrew Hales ----right.....? I literally DO NOT know wtf I would do without their videos/products/website.
It's insanely cohesive and I trust their opinions. They don't scam you for money.... I could go on and on lol
Looking gud 😚
sorry what is the foot print of the skimz sm202 thanks love the 52 week build
Love this channel
I am working on a or 90 gallon cube build. I want to run a recirculating skimmer of the manifold and Possible some reactors latter on. With recirculating skimmers on a mani fold, you would only need to run the air intake pump? And not the water feed pump. Right?
So what size pump would you recommend to be able to feed tank, skimmer? And latter on I can add some reactors?
Thank you so much for the input. I think the manifold is a great idea to cut back on a few pumps in the tank...
What skimmer would you recommend for a 38 gallon reef tank that doesn’t break bank? (Willing to spend up to 160)
Honestly, pretty severe space limitations.
Reef Octopus has been making this model for a very long time and as you can tell by the reviews, the feedback is overwhelmingly positive.

what kind of skimmer would you suggest for a 50 gal. innovative marine fusion tank.
+BulkReefSupplyCom thanks for the response!
Thanks for the video, got loads of ideas on my next skimmer build :)
which skimmer do you recommend for a 40 gallon breeder. the skimz sn143. or the vetex omega 130
What company makes a skimmer with a blue lid with the outline of a fish in white? I bought it used and want to make sure its the right size.
Hmm...based on that description, I'm going to guess that it's an Eshopps skimmer.
hey guys- regarding skimmers in a reef tank: is there any advantage to buying a larger skimmer than what you need for the amount of gallons in your tank? i.e.- i have a 75 gallon, and i buy a skimmer for say, rated for a 125-200gal? (just an example)
LOL awesome thanks.
You guys are great! Really wish you would ship to Europe!
Any recommendations on what skimmer to get for the new waterbox peninsula mini 25 ?
I use a pump out of an old filter to do water changes. I pump out 5gallons and drop the pump into the bucket of fresh water. Simple.
hi the skimz skimmer you used on the tank build is that the one what does 2000 litres and could you tell me the footprint of it please thanks
Thanks!
Is it better to get a cheap (sub $50) hang on skimmer or a hang on refugium with chateo and copepods
