SpaceX's Big Solution to Solve NASA's New Space Plane TROUBLE!
No doubt! Dream Chaser is teetering on the edge of the abyss because it no longer has a launch vehicle as planned for its first launch.
Who will help them? Well, no one else but SpaceX. But it won't be the Falcon 9 rocket, so which one will it be, the Falcon Heavy or the Starship?
Let’s find out on today's episode of Alpha Tech:
As we know, ULA was very eager to proceed with its second launch in September because this is the final step before the new rocket can be certified to perform national security missions for the Department of Defense.
SpaceX's Big Solution to Solve NASA's New Space Plane TROUBLE!
Meanwhile, Sierra reportedly informed ULA that it had “significant risk” toward making the September launch date and that it would “step aside” so the rocket company could move ahead with its certification.
In a separate statement, Sierra Space said that despite the setback, their first Dream Chaser spacecraft, named Tenacity, is still on track for its first mission before the end of the year. Tenacity, along with the expendable Shooting Star cargo module, completed environmental testing, a series of tests to ensure the vehicle will survive the harsh conditions of launch and orbit, in early May. The spacecraft was moved to NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida later that month, where they are currently undergoing final testing before launch.
SpaceX's Big Solution to Solve NASA's New Space Plane TROUBLE!
While the delay is a major disappointment for space enthusiasts eagerly awaiting Dream Chaser's launch, it is also a smart move by Sierra Space, as extending the testing period ensures that the efficiency and reliability of the first launch will be superior.
They have likely also learned some lessons from their competitor Boeing with the Starliner spacecraft, realizing they cannot allow their vehicle to have any issues in space leading to a failure like Starliner. Currently, Starliner is still stuck in space with no specific return date to Earth.
Another reason for the separation of Dream Chaser and Vulcan could be a mistaken collaboration from the start between ULA and Sierra Space.
For ULA, they should not have chosen a developing vehicle as their payload. They should have understood that they needed to act quickly to get their rocket operational. Meanwhile, the development of Dream Chaser is clearly slow and cannot keep up with their pace.

SpaceX needs to make an announcement: "We have safety concerns about all NASA and DOD payloads. Therefore, we're suspending them until we conduct a safety review." Then, when the Feds stop messing around with Starship launches, resume them.

Is SpaceX still failing at putting DOD satellites in the contracted orbits on their own? Or do the satellite have to use their own rockets to put it in the proper orbit. Try working for SpaceX if you like working for 48 hours a week with no overtime pay.

The Dream Chaser lift problem, is an example of a point I made in a writ here on Alpha Tech months back.
That with fabrication and a standard engine,
it would be possible to use computer assisted design scaling, and build launch vehicles that were sized to fit the payload.
Basically by certifying a system of design and construction, and a system of engines, it would be able to be an efficient business model for individual payloads...
Instead of one size does all, or we only have three sizes, how bout, you tell us the weight and how high, and our design computer will spit out the plan and the cost...
Diameters, lengths, and number of engines are just variables...
    For example:
Raptor 3's, and Starship style construction scaled by tube diameter, and fuel tankage required.
Would be a good business model, and if re usable you would build up a stock of sizes....
Might be hard on Competitors though, like BO or ULA, if there was a more affordable and more reliable option.

Another problem with Dream Chaser using the Falcon Heavy is the SpaceX have stated that they have no intention of pursuing human rating for that rocket so, while it could provide a short term path to orbit is would not provide Sierra with a path to their long-term goal of flying astronauts to space.

Like Elon said...the world doesn't need a new capsule. We need Spaceplanes that launch routinely with just two smaller reusable boosters "backboost" to earth and land. This us just stuck in my head. Originally, Starliner was NASA's darling, SpaceX Dragon was the backup and Dream Chaser was named appropriately. Now, SpaceX has signed a follow on contract, Starliner is stuck on the ISS, and Dream Chaser might just place in the race. . Rather than 'satisfying the contract' and retiring, Dream Chaser has a real chance if they can get certified. The first flight is crucial for optics. Break out the Simonize and polish this thing up, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow just came out from behind the clouds. We aren't there yet, but since Starliner stumbled, Dream Chaser could have a payday. Since it was designed for ULA hardware and will now be adapted for SpaceX, NASA has the possibility of a certified vehicle with a choice of launch vehicles. Redundancy in launch is a selling point for NASA. Take the first ride on SpaceX and the second ride on ULA to fulfill that contract. Get certified both ways. Starliner gets left behind.

Great Video ! The Sierra Space Dream Chaser is what the NASA Space Shuttle should have been ! The Dream Chaser was first planned to launch from the Atlas Rocket, but can use any capable booster to reach LEO ! The Dream Chaser is designed to launch to the ISS, the New ISS and soon the low inclination LEO CSS with a Fuel Depot nearby ! After the Crew Dream Chaser docks or mates with the LEO CSS the four Lunar Workers can transfer to the HLS/LEV/LLV ! The HLS/LEV/LLV with a 6.1 km/sec delta-V can fly a mission to the Lunar Surface (LS) to support the South Pole Lunar Outpost/Base (Clementine Base) with a Fuel Depot nearby ! A Crew of twelve Lunar Workers can help expand the Outpost to a proper Lunar Base ! The Lunar Workers will also support the LS Fuel Depot to fuel the HLS/LEV/LLV for return to the LEO CSS ! Six flights a year from LEO to the LS will support the Lunar Workers for a six month Tour of Duty at the Lunar Outpost to expand to a proper Lunar Base ! The Tech developed to return to the moon to stay, can take US and the world to Mars and Beyond ! For more info read the paper "Moon Direct" by Robert Zubrin... Also a good read is the NASA designed "24-Hour Lunar Shuttle" (LEO to LLO) by Stan Borowski (NASA Glenn Research Center). tjl

Still amazing that BO runs hardware poor on production of engines they need not only for their own needs for for customers. Raptor's reliability is increasing because of their high production.... BO is not like the run of the mill start up that has difficulty getting the funds to get the hardware availability where it needs to be. BO has the backing to make sure production of BE4 is ramped up to iron out productin problems etc. They can handle having a surplus of engines as they are open to selling them to outside customers such as ULA.

There is already a functional Spaceplane with YEARS of orbital experience that is still increasing. You neglect the X-37B spaceplane by Boeing which is in orbit and functional TODAY. What's really surprising is that Boeing didn't have the brains to propose a manned version of that already working and functional spaceplane and instead decided to develop the Starliner instead. It's not like the X-37 wasn't originally designed for manned flight.

Not a very astute comment. The whole issue is the cost of the launch vehicle ( stage 1). For the space shuttle each launch vehicle was a hugely expensive single use vehicle. Cost alone dictates that anyone who really wants to be competitive( not ULA) must use a recoverable and reuse-able launch vehicle. This awful video managed not to make that obvious point in its boring rehash of what almost everyone already knows. ItsSpaceX or nothing baby!

The problem with Dream Chaser ground testing is it isn't Space where components that passed tests on the ground could fail in Space just like Starliner which passed all the ground tests allowing NASA to certify it for a crew mission only to find that Earth can't replicate what happens in space.
Like Space X Starship, Boeing should, in my opinion, have had more testing in space before sending astronauts up on a craft that had problems on its test flights.
On the other hand, Space X is working on its 5th launch in ensuring it gets everything right.
I suspect Space X will have 4-6 more launches before they are retrieving both the booster and starship on a routine basis. The the test will be launching Starlink v2 a number of times before trying to launch satellites and then a manned crew.
I think the reason NASA is cutting short extensive testing before allowing a crewed launch is cost. It cost hundreds of millions to billions to launch a single use ULA, SLS mission and only Space X is only launching Starship testing on it's own dime with the exception of the Starship version to go to the Moon which NASA is funding. But NASA isn't paying for the recovery of the booster and Starship prototypes--Musk is.
Single use rockets and engines will soon be obsolete which is what Blue Origin and ULA are trying to delay Space X use of the Kennedy Space Center launch pads.

Dream chaser was the Congressionally mandated craft never delivered before the first dollar was approved for ISS. The Dream chaser name was just a rebranding and relaunch of a late 90's craft that failed to certify. Further mini shuttles like it was used in the late 60's and 70's as test beds for the old shuttle fleet with a famous photo of 3 models. In the late 90's a replacement aero spike driven replacement shuttle was under construction that would have filled the same job range as the old shuttles while being fully self contained, no external tank or SRBs. It is odd that everything done now looks like copies of Gemini except for SpaceX's Starship with them repeating the same problems.

I see so much crap here..
Dream chaser is still scheduled to fly on ULA's Vulcan Centaur, though not this next one. Delay is a Sierra Space thing and not ULA. ULA is using the next V-C launch to lift a dummy load as a goal toward any DoD launch.

    • @AgraFarmsllc
      @AgraFarmsllc 26 дней назад

That is not true. ULA chose to run a dummy load after the latest upper stage delay Pushing thier schedule even further back. Then NASA delayed the dream chasers final check out at KSC. When the Space Force fined ULA for Blue Origins antics on the BE4 engine delays, that was the final nail in the coffin for ULA Vulcan Centuar certification. so, ULA threw Dream chaser under the bus. This is just more antics by ULA and Boing and Blue Origin for their failure to complete contractual obligations. You know any contractors tried to pull any of the crap these guys do they would be toast.

    • @jesselomas8626
      @jesselomas8626 26 дней назад

@@AgraFarmsllc First V-C flew. This upcoming flight was supposed to be Dream Chaser. Yes, due to delays, Dream Chaser flight has to be rescheduled to NET unknown. ULA, however, IS flying a dummy payload in its place. All this is public record. Also ULA is also lined up for DoD launches but needs 2 successful launches to flight qualify - also public record. Whether you like it or not.
On the subject of delays over the BE-4, that might very well be ongoing but its NOT preventing the contract ALREADY awarded going ahead. In fact for 'round three' BO is already lined up too... Again a matter of public record...

Starship has no big needed cargo door. With current design, I doubt that that is even structurally possible. Starship should be redesigned as a shuttle type vehicle, with said cargo-door, and wings to land like a plane.

It just seems "odd" to use a Starship to launch Dreamchaser. Not saying technically infeasible, it just begs the question, why? If you are going to do that, why not just use Starship itself? (other than landing site issues). Is it possible to launch Dreamchaser on just the superheavy booster (without Starship on top)? In any event, I am sure there will be something that can launch it, probably BO.

"Dreamchaser up to 1.5 tonnes of cargo" = "Dragon average 1500kg of cargo"
"Dreamchaser is somewhat more robust." !!?? Please explain.
First of all, 1.5 tonnes is the same as 1500kg.
Second, "up to" isn't the same as "an average of". Meaning actually Dragon could carry more! That seems Dragon is more robust to me.

1.5 ton is 3000lbs. or about 1360-1 Kg while close your numbers are off to use the equal bit. I am surprised they used the non metric system for a space or NASA bit. Of course this is America, we don't make sense, we make dollars and we know inches are better than centimeters and can prove it when she wants us too.
