Dangerous cube-shaped USB charger with 2 ports

  • Today, let's take a look at another dodgy USB charger. This time it's a cube with 2 USB ports, rated 2.1A (for iPad) and 1.0A (for other devices). The switching power supply is supposed to be 5V 3100mA, but this is far from reality. Also the safety of it is quite questionable. It may cause a fire or an electric shock.

      The ultra cheap transformers have absolutely no mains isolation in them, except the lacquer on the wires (0.05 or 0.005mm thick!). Be grateful for the isolation that you can get. :)

    The primary current sense resistor is not just for short circuit protection. It may be for current mode control (simple compensation network). This allows for pulse by pulse current limiting . The control has actually two loops - innermost current control loop, terminating the on state by reaching a current target, defined by the outermost voltage control loop error amplifier, comparing the voltage feedback with internal reference.

    Some of those switching chips incorporate a built in snubber, using a high voltage avalanche clamp to limit the turn off voltage of the power switch. As they are generally low power, this does not increase power dissipation in the chip too much, but saves on external component cost.

    So, you told that flyback topology uses ferrite core with air gap.
    But, what will happen if I use a core with air gap in half bridge or push-pull topology?

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  5 лет назад

      It will probably still work, but there will be much more of inductive current, causing more losses in the switching transistors. The air gap reduces the inductance of the windings.

    • @anindyamitra5091
      @anindyamitra5091 5 лет назад

      Ok, so it will be better not to use that core in half bridge topology SMPS. Thank you for the response.
      I would then build a flyback power supply (1000w).

      Surprisingly, I don't. Cats naturally tend to assist people while they work. They don't want to miss the fun :). And of course, the cardboard bench feels warmer than other surfaces. Cats always look for warm spots. White paper and other white areas trick cats into thinking that sun is shining there. That's why the cat always wants to sit on the schematics.

      That's a spiral of lies. Once the competition starts lying, They have to lie as well. Once the competition lies even more, they also have to lie even more to keep up. The absence of an optocoupler is definitely not the worst problem. Even some branded chargers have none.

    Crazy... It says 1A because it's a fake Apple charger, except it's the American design for iPhones. In Europe, we have a flat one with the little triangles at the side so it would fit perfect in a 2-prong European outlet (like some extension cords / power strips have). They just put European prongs on it, but the cube design is for the Japanese / American / Canedian market. Still incredibly dangerous. Unbelievable they can sleep at night knowing they made / sold this. A woman once got electrocuted when picking up her iPhone (back when they were made from aluminium).
