All 3 protagonists get stabbed at one point or another in the game with A2 being backstabbed in the backstory and Ending D, 2B being extra stabbed in the main story both physically (once) and metaphorically by 9S during one of his breakdowns (a whole bunch of times) then her spare bodies get into some stabbing action too.
And lest we forget good old Nines who gets stabbed the most aside from his very own ending D and that time in the copied city since his backstory is a whole lot of getting killed and brought back with no memory of it happening. He gets to be backstabbed, front stabbed, side-stabbed, blown up, shot, cut to pieces... you name it, we just don't get to see it. It's implied stabbing!
The only person who never gets stabbed in NieR games (of the main protagonists anyway) is probably Emil... He just gets tortured for most of his life, used as a weapon, skeletized, blown up and decapitated so that he can live for thousands of years and lose all of his friends! And most of his memories of said friends! So he really doesn't get stabbed because by the time he would he no longer has a body that can be stabbed... or any body post-NieR.
... I'm just happy Taro decided to give us Ending E where there's at least some hope for the poor bastards. Not that he didn't write an epilogue that subverted that. Then subverted the subversion in the concert. Man's pure evil to his characters, I swear.

Wait till he finds out that the chorus on this specific music is the Game Team singing. Yoko Taro included.
Then he finds out on WHY the music transitions to English/Japanese.
Then he finds out about how the game ends and how every, every single music detail has a meaning.
At this point, play this game man. Just do it. And I envy you for having that experience for the first time.

Nier is one of those Franchises that's Biggest Negative is that you can only experience it for the First Time once, like it's Phenomenal everytime you play the games, but that First Time is irreplaceable..

    • @jamfilledjars
      @jamfilledjars 2 года назад +16

Au contraire, I think that’s Nier’s biggest positive.
The fact that you _can’t_ experience it more than once the same way you did on the first playthrough makes you appreciate the game more.
It makes you live in and appreciate the present, which for a game focusing heavily on different humanist ideologies and philosophies, meaning of life and existentialism is quite symbolic.

Here's a fun fact: the chorus you hear in the background, that is every person that works at Sqaure Enix, all the employees they gathered for that moment sang that song, INCLUDING YOKO TARO HIMSELF! The meaning behind it is that you aren't alone, you don't have to face the consequences of pain my yourself, you dont have to struggle on your own, you alone dont have to carry the weight of the world. It's sad, but so beautiful too.

There are multiple versions of Weight of the World (composed by Keiichi Okabe) in the game as it has multiple ending credits. There's English (J'Nique Nicole), Japanese (Marina Kawana) and FR (actually Chaos language, sung by Emi Evans). And then there's the final version which is this one that combines all three and adds a choir (which iirc is made up of the devs and maybe voice actors too, I forgot). And of course the 8-bit portion arranged by Shotaro Seo.

You're right in that the Nier games (or any that spring from the mind of Yoko Taro) tend to veer heavily towards tragedy and melancholy, sometimes to absurdly soul crushing degrees, but there's usually some ray of hope or some kind of spark of the positive side of humanity that rears its head despite all of that. Weight of the world definitely has that feeling of suffering through adversity but in the end pulling through with a chorus of voices that sing together regardless of language.
Part of the reason they take a lot of bold chances both in the music and the story is because Yoko Taro has made his career taking bold chances making weird but incredibly ambitious games that have always had a cult following but never performed particularly well at all until Automata. Automata was this perfect marriage of Taro's ambition, Square's willingness to take a chance on him (it's an open secret that someone high up at Square has a lot of faith in Taro and is basically his patron) and platinum game's ability to make a genuinely great action game.
Also if you want really bold, check out Drakengard's soundtrack some day, the game is linked to Nier and was the first big title by Yoko Taro. The soundtrack is designed to make you uncomfortable. Like actually unpleasant to listen to.

  • @silentcalling

    Oh great, I'm crying again.
I haven't seen anyone else mention it, but "Weight of the World" has *four* versions - one in English (Weight of the World), one in Japanese (世界の歌 - Sekai no Uta - Song for a Fallen World), one in a made-up "chaos language", and the 8-bit version. Each of them has their own significance, each their own meaning, and each their own place in the game.
This is really something you should experience, even though it's a long haul.

  • @anonymousnate678
    @anonymousnate678 2 года назад +13

The multiple language part is very meaningful aside from just adding some vocal melody to the song. This plays at the end of a very sad, and bleak game and the song works as brilliant symbolism of hope, and coming together regardless of our differences and realizing that we all suffer the same emotional and physical pain together regardless of our language or culture.

Go further to find the 3rd and 4th ending of the game and you will get the Chaos language version of the song playing on the credits. Kind of a cool thing about the ending when this song plays (spoilers ahead):
When you are at the ending, there is a bullet hell sequence that becomes unbeatable on your own. But other people who complete the game have the option of permanently sacrificing their save data, and if they do so, markers representing those other players will show up to save your ass and help you beat the final fight. That’s the point in which the chorus enters. It represents the fact that as long as you have comrades who are willing to sacrifice for the cause, you can beat even seemingly insurmountable odds.
It still makes me cry when I hear it!

Like to "Into Free by B'z " or to Eternal Return, the main theme of Dragon's Dogma or to "At the End of the Struggle" tbh there are a lot more, but those 3 probably are the most popular ones. It's sad that no one requested something from Dragon's Dogma so far. Seems like the game's been forgotten over the years.
The Composers of Dragon's Dogma ( Tadayoshi Makino, Inon Zur, Rei Kondoh) have created some very unique styles for their soundtracks in the game. It's hard to explain as someone who has only little experience with music, but holy sh*t, almost every soundtrack in Dragon's Dogma slaps really hard. You're not exactly wrong about it anyway. But you'll understand it more about why the song is called 'Weight of the World' in the first place. The 'world' used in the title isn't talking about the physical sense of the 'world' but more on the psychological side, like many of the game.
Anyway Yoko Taro's game is the type that forms cult. It just... happen. It is an anti-thesis to JRPG in general and I guess its closest siblings in story is Shin Megami Tensei. Yoko loves to put emphasis in the color for a game identity. NieR's colors is Grey. I would want to say Black and White too but it is a shared colors for both Drakengard and NieR. Drakengard's colors is Red. It felt so prominent it also appear in the sound. Personally whenever I'm listening to the sound of NieR in both Replicant/Gestalt and Automata, it felt like the world become grey or have washed out colors. It was so damn fucking lonely but at the same time it is touching the parts that I've been neglecting with gentle touch. It is the song for the weak that needed all those push to move forward.
Yoko himself is a bit of an enigma. Everyone and his coworker says that he is a good person, a professional. But his idea and creative touch isn't something that just anyone can warp their mind about. It felt like he doesn't have that much faith in people and yet it feels like he actually believe in the people. His game made human act like human and before Automata it was actually hard to accept his concept of humanity. It is true to certain degree and there is part of me that want to deny it. I start rambling out of control here so I'll just stop. Good luck finishing the game.

Nier is absolutely an experience, this song is amazing but it holds so much more weight (pun-intended) when you've played through the game and you know everything these characters went through. Automata is a philosophical and existential gutpunch and this song playing at the very end of all of it was masterful, first time I played it and reached the end I actually teared up a little hearing this song.
Personally I think the "Prelude" version is musically superior but Final Fantasy is my all time favourite franchise so I may be slightly biased. I have however used a YorHa inspired appearance on my FFXIV character's main job for the past 2 years (full black outfit, blindfold and even the white hair).

This game has like at least 3 versions of every song, but Weight of the World in particular has a bit more. 3 vocal versions (English, Japanese, chaos language), a mix of those three, an instrumental version, the 8-bit one, and now the crossover version in FFXIV as well.
But yeah, Automata has a lot of stabbing. Lots of losses, lots of tragedy, but ultimately a nice ending.

Weight of the World is arguably the most important Video game song ever just because of what exactly it represents. Reaching the point where this is played is a life changing experience for many. Definitely made me change my outlook on life and made me into a better person.

The constant change in languages and multiple voices is the background is a good representantion of what the [E]nding is supposed to mean, humanity singing in unison, and the "sacrifice" the player must make to help other people at the end of the credits is what makes it even more amazing.

One of the most emotionally intense moments I've ever experienced through gaming.
At the end of the game this plays over a shoot em up segment where the enemies are the credits themselves
And every time you die the game gives you encouraging messages from other players, even better for you to beat the game a random person has to willingly sacrifice their save data, and the game doesn't even tell you their name.
    Simply genius.

It's a very interesting song when you look at the lyrics, as well; They're ENTIRELY different between English and Japanese. Not just the lyrics, but the entire meaning that comes across with the song changes between the two.

So there's a reason this track starts in the 8 bit style.
    .
    (Spoilers, obviously)
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
Once you have completed the first 4 major endings, as the credits start playing the companion NPCs (The pod units) start discussing that their purpose has been fulfilled and as a part of their programming they are required to destroy any traces of what went on... but they hesitate. To break the stalemate, you, as the person playing the game (and NOT as a character in the game) are given the option of going ahead with their programming, which ends the credits and takes you back to the splash screen, or fighting it. If you fight it, the credits restart... as the hacking minigame that you can do as 9S, complete with the chiptune audio mix, which then cycles through the other languages. Its a brutal minigame, which you're expected to fail and each time you do you're given a chance to give up. Fail enough times and after the game asks you if you want to give up it comes up with a new dialogue box that basically says, "Hey, this player want to help you out, do you accept?" If you do, when you restart, a whole bunch of ships spawn in, rather than just the one and it adds the other singers in to the mix, which is the dev team for the game.

I love your reaction to this and I just wanted to add some context. When they used this version, and this version specifically, the emotional gut punch of what you just went through in the game and the way this rendition is played, the fact that WHILE this plays you're receiving messages of encouragement from other players (long story) hits so much harder.

  • @DevinOfBacon
    @DevinOfBacon 2 года назад +4

This is one of those songs that you can't really properly understand unless you've actually played throughout the game. It typically plays at the end-credits, which there are actually several instances of, since the first 3 endings you play through fairly linearly back-to-back from the different characters' perspectives. You get different versions of the song on those end-credits, and this version is the one that plays on the 'true' ending, which combines all the versions into one.
It plays off of the emotion you felt just before the credits rolled in each ending, and really enhances it with the 'true' ending.

NieR: Automata is one of those games that pulls in all of the philosophical viewpoints of humanity and picks them apart... If you haven't looked into a basic plot intro, you should. It's very thought-provoking. And Yoko Taro is a master of mindfucks that leave you feeling broken, but hopeful.

This song was inspired by coke machines in pakistan and india which allowed persons who disliked each other immensely to share cute messages with one another. In the game this is the end credits song. It is a shoot em up, think Galaga. You will be forced to die over and over, while the game asks you a series of questions. Near the end it asks you to give up your save file, so that you can send an extra ship to other game players struggling with the impossible sequence. It is fucking amazing.

Weight of the world is kind of a sad song, specially the lyrics but at the same time it has some hopeful tone to it.
Now this version of the song plays during a specific moment in the game, and the context makes it so this song goes from "sad but a bit hopeful" to something beautiful and even happy.
Also, the chorus of people humming in the background are voices of the development team for this game (with even Yoko Taro among them), and yes, that fact put in the context of the scene makes it even more emotional.

You have a very good grip on what the feel of the game is about but you will truly only experience the full emotional feelings of these orchestrated songs once you are actually in game going through it. I think when you’re at that stage, your brain will have so many ticks that you might be reset as a human being. ESPECIALLY this particular song…..this game always brings happy tears and it’s an amazing and unforgettable first trip through it.

If I may annoy with some requests, you should check out Yoko Taro's older series, Drakengard. It's very connected with NieR and of course has some bangers by Okabe, I suggest "The Last Song" from Drakengard 3.
As a second option I'd suggest "If you still believe" from Legend of Dragoon. Amazing game as well, up there with Chrono Cross as my all time favorites!
