- HLG or V-Log L, which is the best picture profile for video on the Panasonic G9? In this video I show you how I expose and color correct / grade HLG and V-LogL. I included same sample footage from outdoors, indoors and in low light, ranging from 400 to 3200 ISO.

Finally upgraded my G9 to the latest version, great tutorial - keep up the good work and greetings from Germany :)
I gotta say the graded HLG video looked really fantastic. I would've liked to see the V-log corrected Panasonic LUT compared to the HLG graded because they both looked really nice. Appreciate the video man, I learned quite a bit from just watching two of your vids.
I’m personally a big fan of HLG, but on my GH6 filming in VLog (which seems identical to PQ gamma curve) sensor data first, putting it in a PQ timeline applying HLG, and using PQ output tone map and project export to limit the HDR to 1000 nits
thanks for the comparison - very interesting the skin color difference
Thank you ! Great comparison ! make more G9 video features . I'm gonna get it this year hopefully
Nice video. I am expecting my G9 this week. Regarding grading, I would actually recommend doing adjustments in nodes 'before' the LUT node. LUTs tend to "bake in" the look that is applied when you use them. Making adjustments in nodes before the LUT allows for smaller adjustments without taking away from what the LUT brings to the image. Just my thoughts. From what I've seen so far, I think using HLG might be a better choice over V-Log for the cleaner shadows that you mentioned. Thanks for your video. Thumbs up.
Thanks for your feedback! The LUTs I use are for correction and not for the look. Corrections are applied before the look. I am no color grading expert but that's how I understand it.
Nice job on this video. For me, it's hard to beat that Vlog L and Leeming LUT combo for fast grading with accurate skin tones...great stuff.
Very fair material!
3:56 did you denoise? it looks surprisingly clean even at 3200! EDIT: just saw that you said no reduction looks awesome! were you shooting wide open? still pretty sharp.
It was wide open. You crop out the worst parts in the corners in 16:9 video. In 4:3 photographs you see that the corners are quite soft wide open.
How are the g9 colors compare to the gh5 In 10bit 422? Are gh5 colors better or they look the same?
Hi guys! I need help!
I bought a Lumix G9 a couple of weeks ago and since then I am trying to use the HLG colour profile but unsuccessfully.
I don't know how to enable this feature. I can see the information about "HLG is available" in video mode, but I can't select it because it's off on screen.
Thanks for any help!
You have to select a video mode first, where HLG is available. These are the 10 bit codecs.
Waveform in G9?
yes, you have a quite small waveform monitor you can activate.
Dear friend this camera has 180d (shutterspeed) option ?
Hello! No, you can only set shutter speed.
@@TeaJayPhotography thx so much
This is amazing! Exactly what I was looking for! Do I need the full version of Davinci to work with 422 10bit?
Yes, I think you need the studio version of Resolve. I was about to buy it anyways after 3 years of using the free version. There are many other things in the studio version that are worth it.
@@TeaJayPhotography thank you!
@@krillansavillan Hey just a tip, I convert my 10bit to prores and free Resolve works with that beautifully!
All your examples are underexposed for my taste.
I also tried out the Leeming LUT for my HLG footage but wasn’t pleased with the results (the same problem: extremely underexposed scenes despite the recommended ETTR settings). The best results for the HLG I got applying a color space transformation, but I was unable to reproduce all the colors in comparison to the Standard profile.
I watched the video on my phone and many shots look quite dark here. But I can't grade for every device. Only shot that was underexposed was the one with the chapel. Maybe I should double check on my phone next time and adjust brightness.
Watched it on my TV and all shots are looking fine.
For my eyes, the iPhones’ displays reproduce color and luminance very accurately. I’ve watched your examples on my iPhone 7. As for my experience with Learning LUT for HLG, I judge the luminance and colors based on my laptop (92% sRGB; calibrated)
The Leeming luts are supplemented by the Leeming Quickies which add brightness at various levels while keeping highlights
Joe Marano exactly, I often just apply the apollo bright quickies and volia!
The HLG Leeming LUT has more accurate/natural skin tones than the V-logL LUT. @4:47 you can clearly see the V-logL red channel is oversaturated and gives your complexion a reddish blush. Overall, HLG produces far more balanced images straight out of the camera than V-logL, making it inherently easier to work with. V-logL is so bleached out it requires a correction LUT just to get in the proper ballpark for grading. With HLG, you simply need to import it into the right color space. After that, you can use a LUT for the most accurate results, or just tweak the gamma curves to taste in shadow, mid, and highlight ranges. While the color science behind log profiles is sound, Panasonic's crippled implementation of Vlog-L makes it objectively inferior to 10-bit 422 HLG.
New Sub! Just bought G9 and am excited to try Vlog L sometime in future. I love the Natural profile. Thanks for the comparisons!
Hi, very nice video, thanks to share it.
I make documentaries about traditions of native peoples.
I would like to know your thoughts on Pocket 3 and HLG vs V-LOG. If you have used them extensively, which one do you prefer?
When to use HLG or V-LOG?
Is the dynamic range of HLG much higher than the NORMAL profile or just slightly better in video editing?
Thanks to share for your thoughts
👍🙏
nest time put the graded versions side by side for comparison
comparison means side by side, it's better for the brain.
Good work! Really enjoyed your thorough analysis.
Intéressant
great video, would be nice to have also a comparison with the CineD vs HLG.
Thanks! I will probably do this sometime in the future since CineD would be my go to profile for slow motion.
Do you need to buy additional firmware for the G9 to get log footage?
HLG is built in. V-LogL key must be purchased for about 90-100€ / $.
@@TeaJayPhotography Is HLG something which can be called "flat" (sorry if that's the wrong videography term) and can be edited with colorgrading in post?
Hybrid Log Gamma is a format viewable in sdr and hdr. As the log in the name implies, it is a logarithmic format but not as flat as V-LogL. It is also 10 bit and has a larger color space. So it holds up well in grading. I'd recommend you to try it out.
Great videos!!! The question That is most interested me is whether you are recommending to purchase The v log for the g9? Which one do you prefer? Is the v log L superior to the Hlg?
Thanks! I have heard for extensive grading, vLogL is better. But HLG still is 10 bit with a much bigger color space than 8bit footage. So for most uses, HLG is more than enough. I myself use HLG. The vLogL key includes the waveform monitor. But since it's quite small it is not really that big help for exposing.
Hi. I recently buy the update to Vlog L ;)
In which situations it’s prefer to record Vlog L or HLG ?
If you want to do a heavy color grade use VlogL. I personally use mostly HLG. Also in low light I find HLG less noisy.
Hey! Thanks for the Vid. Ive been thinking about getting the Vlog upgrade for my G9 but I was curious if you can use it in more shooting modes than HLG? I can only seem to use HLG in10bit modes, can you use the vlog in 8bit modes?
You can use V-LogL in 8bit, but colors are not as good as in 10bit and the footage will probably fall apart when heavily graded.
@@TeaJayPhotography thanks for the response!
Thank you. This is great!
How do ou ge vlog option in photo style? I have not. Hlg ok but not v-log. I precise i update g9 in 2.1
You have to buy the upgrade key for V-LogL.
@@TeaJayPhotography thx a lot.
Fantastic quality video, what lens do you use in low light ?
Thank you! I used the Laowa 7.5mm at F2 for the interior shots and Panaleica 15mm at F1.7 for the outdoor scenes.
@@TeaJayPhotographyThanks, Laowa look amazing, but manual focus stop me, what do you think about olympus 8mm f/1.8 Pro?
Manual focus with such a wide lens is easy. Normally you set it to infinity and are good. The Oly 8mm is a fisheye and you would have to apply correction of you don't want the fisheye look.
@@TeaJayPhotography And price is lower also! Thanks for answers
I think I prefer V LOG for my own needs but HLG Colours are quite nice in my experience. The Leeming Luts are good to use with the Leeming Quickies (free download) and the Panasonic Lut was designed for full V LOG off the varicams so doesn't work well at all for V Log L
I have been testing the same things haha :)
Just donwloaded the quickes. Will try them soon. Thanks for the hint!
@@TeaJayPhotography No worries. It saves so much time than by doing it by hand!
