I came home from the hospital and drank raw milk from the tank in my bottle with additives. I think my mom added vitamins and some sugar source. We were dairy farmers and I married a dairy farmer. My children were raised on raw milk after they finished breast feeding and they are healthy, strong and have always had strong immune systems. There are so many things that folks know nothing about when it comes to their food supply. If they knew everything, they may stop eating....lol! We have gotten so far away from the way our ancestors lived, and I believe our immune systems are all the worse because of it. I love what you do. Please keep being honest and educating folks on where their food comes from and what the process looks like. Your kids are lucky and blessed for being raised the way you are doing life. Some day they will thank you! ;)

Lisa, I’m a nurse and so agree on the antibiotic front. We massively overuse antibiotics, seems to be getting better now but a lot of damage has been done in previous years. Drug resistant bacteria, poor response to antibiotics when you NEED them,etc. interestingly enough, the majority of antibiotics, in the US at least, are used on livestock, due to our very unhealthy/unnatural feed lots. If you need antibiotics, take a probiotic with it and take them when scheduled and the entire pack. Set alarms if you need to, and don’t stop taking them even if you start to feel better!
Salty milk means the cow is stressed. Since it was her first milking experience she was probably just a little stressed and then she got use to being milked and the salty milk went away. We usually milk twice a day but I like the idea of milking in the morning and trying your trick with letting the calf suck to let the cow let down more. We've been milking for over 5 years and I even learned something new from this video!!! ❤️

Firstly I was bought up on raw milk, I bought my children up on raw milk and now my grandchildren have it too, never in all these years have any of us been sick from it, I also know people who can't tolerate pasteurized milk but have no problem with raw milk. Secondly for the research you do into what's best for your cow, have seen this go terribly wrong when people get a cow and don't do their research and don't realize what goes into feeding and caring for a dairy cow. Store milk is also homozied, “I can’t spell” to keep the milk and cream together for the hole milk at the store, the milk has some cream taken out for percentages of milk, buttermilk is the fluid left over from making butter
@@Vasilisapowhile a pasteurized fluid may be sterile at the end of the heating process, one it’s put into a sanitized but not sterile plastic container it’s no longer sterile. Like when I put sterile gloves on at work and touch anything outside my sterile field, my gloves are now contaminated. The inside of the plastic container can’t be sterilized by heat or the plastic would melt. If it’s sterilized by chemicals that’s a whole different contamination problem. So yes, there are bacteria in the jugs of milk at the store. That’s why they spoil even if unopened and kept refrigerated within a week or so.
i grew up on a farm in europe - we drank milk from the cows our whole lives....nobody ever got sick.... grandparents are presently in their late 90s....soooooooo....
you would be the first family with kids that never got sick to ever exist. Maybe you didn't know it was from the raw milk you drank? I am a vet and we do a special class called veterinary public health (i am also from Europe, Switzerland). Our professor who is known worldwide always used to say: the question when drinking raw milk isn't if you will get sick, but when. I just wouldn't want to try it out, and I especially wouldn't want to expose my children to this risk.
Interesting though...because we have been drinking raw milk regularly (at least 2 gallons every week) for 11 years and I can also say we've never been sick. 🤷♀️ Have you looked into the actual stats on deaths per year from raw milk?
@@Simplefarmhouselife we’ve been drinking raw milk as a family for about 8 years… I’ve drank it through my last 4 pregnancies, which is a big “no-no”… 😏 None of us have ever had any ill affects from it. In fact, my children love it and are thriving.
I enjoyed this video! I thought I'd add a comment on your answer to the first Q&A question: When you get raw milk from a local farmer, that farmer knows he/she will be facing you again, and that if you were to get sick from consuming the milk, you will return to them for an explanation or answers. If you buy a gallon of milk from the grocery store and get sick from consuming it (or any food), you might go to the store with questions and they'd send you to the company who produced the milk who might send you back through the many people/farms who provide milk to their company. In short, you'd never find a true cause and they know this. It's passing the buck. When you buy milk/eggs/meat/veg/fruit/etc. from a local-to-you farmer, you only have to go to one source for an answer to any question about a product. In my mind, this is a great reason for local farmers to do their best to bring us quality products~~because they want and need our business and they understand the risk they take in being responsible for a healthy/safe product. So glad you posted all this information on raw milk. I've been drinking it for years and making kefir as well. I am also confused on why folks don't question milk purchased from the store. I have a big production dairy farm close by and it saddens me to see the fifth those poor cows live in, but oh yeah drink that milk from the store. I also recently heard in the pasteurization process of commercial milk where they kill off all the beneficial bacteria, they don't remove all that dead bacteria from the milk, yum, yum -- No thank you!

Meanwhile he’s completely fine eating his impossible burger from Burger King which is full of literal garbage. I was a vegetarian occasional vegan for over 10 years. Since I was 13! I’d walk down the streets of Manhattan with my Peta bag and get a “God bless you” from the passers by. If only they could see me now 🙄 they’d probably throw paint on me! Pigs, goats, chickens, ducks .. you name it. All grass fed and organic. There’s nothing like it! (Which you obviously know lol) and 2 outdoor guardian dogs. Outdoor! 🤭😮 I’d get text messages from my siblings weekly about how cruel that is. Meanwhile mine have a fulfilling purpose. Not sitting on the couch watching tv, overweight and bored out of their mind like their dogs. But I’m the one in the wrong. Forgive me for writing a novel. Sounds super silly but I’ve found such a friend in you. Being a stay at home mom with 3 kids under 6, a large homestead and a husband that works 15 hrs a day, you’ve been God sent!

Love it, thanks for sharing. My state doesn't allow the sell of raw milk for human consumption. It is so hard to understand how that is possible and we are saying weed is legal. I hate how politics has ruined such a wonderful thing. I did find a dairy farmer near me that is selling it legally through herd share, so I plan on looking more into that process and you started it all. It’s illegal in Canada too. But so many are selling it in secret at almost the same price as pasteurized. It’s nuts. And I’m glad people aren’t bowing to the “system”.
I milked for years when my children were at home. I enjoyed your talk. But, there are people who are lactose intolerant. Me and my sons are. I can't digest raw milk either. I could tolerate my raw yogurt for many years, but that stopped about 10 years ago. You lose more and more of the enzyme as you age. Its hereditary in my family. My father was lactose intolerant as well. This includes goat milk. Keep up the good work educating people. Its very necessary in this world.
Most people have never been exposed to a farm and are really disconnected from where our food comes from; hence the mindset that the wrapped and cartons are safer. In my experience the only people who find it horrible to drink another mammals milk are hard core and very vocal vegans. I found your dairy cow information really interesting.
Love Weston Price! I wonder if people would be less skeptical about raw milk if they didn't trust the FDA and all of their processes so much. Maybe defund the FDA a little bit, and with the money people save on their taxes, it could then be invested in a home agrigultre/husbandry course. Then they could see, know, and trust their own products made at home. I wonder if this could be beneficial for local economies too.
As soon as our kids teacher said our daughters would be sharing a bathroom with boys, we pulled our 5 from the system, moved to a farm with no experience, homeschooled them and started growing our own food. Nuts is an understatement!!
hello Lisa, i enjoy your generosity in sharing your research and thoughts. your speaking about cleaning the cows udder before milking. i"m a dairy farmers daughter and I'm smiling as you say you squirt the first out and don"t keep.... good woman, thats exactly right, Dad taught us to do that as we were prepping the cows. We had raw milk all our lives. Dad said that pasteurising was implemented because it was thought that Tuberculosis was spread through raw milk. i now think it was probably more about controlling the farmer and the people and prospering the big business.
Yes!! I love this! I’m a huge advocate for the benefits of raw milk. I currently have a herd of Nigerian Dwarf Goats but will be bringing home a Jersey heifer soon so meet our need for butter, yogurt, cultured cream & hard cheeses. Hey Lisa, I really appreciated this video. Salty milk... I have had salty milk twice. Once after freshening and once during drying up. We were letting the newborn calf have all the milk from a Jersey/angus cow not realizing the back quarters were being totally ignored. When we did milk her for the first time the milk was off colored and very salty. I read that when milk sits too long in the udder it gets "stagnant ". The next day the milk was fine. We saw a similar thing with the drying up milkings. My guess is you were having difficulty stripping the bag all the way in the beginning. I have dealt with a different cow in the past that had mastitis and it was totally different. The bag gets hard and lumpy, red and super sore. The milk is clumpy and gross. There was none of that with the salty milk experience. We are now milking a purebred Jersey. I love your point about commercial versus homestead animal husbandry. Huge difference. Our cow Jayda is known as the farm princess and she not only is well cared for, she is well loved💗.
It is scary to me how many of my friends won't do any research on anything! They act like I am a weird because I want to know how things work....oh well. Yes and my state also makes it illegal to sell raw milk - what's next for humans? Soylent Green?

My grandfather told me of when he used to have to milk the cow every day before going to school until their cow died. In Oregon decades ago. My mind continues to be blown on so many things including raw milk. I hope to have at least 1 dairy cow for my family and I!
I really like your podcast. We started drinking raw milk, because store bought (or worse UHT) is just like some white colored water and I don't like the way the milk is produced. Therefore I really took the time to find a farmer that produces organically and I just asked her if she would recommend to heat it before consumption and she was just like "well, we as the family who produces it, consume it raw." I am form France and I always find it funny when I here that in America people tend to be affraid of raw mild and raw milk cheese because where I live it's totally normal to find raw dairy products in the store, even in big supermarket where I never go... And raw milk cheese are just so good, specially goat cheese omg there are so delicious ! Great post cast, I enjoyed listening to it even if I was already convinced haha !

We started drinking raw milk about a year ago from a trusted source and I now can't go back to store bought. It's disgusting. On multiple levels. Still working on the fermented veggies... right now I see one little speck of anything and the whole jar goes out lol. But I'm getting better with my technique and learning what's okay and what's not. I'll admit, I was getting a bit discouraged with my sauerkraut... but I finally had a success!! This is one of my favorite episodes of the podcast! I hope to have a dairy cow one day and this inspires me. The thing about non-dairy milk being healthier makes me laugh. It's at best nuts with water and some vitamins/minerals added in. In that case, you might as well just eat the nuts with a multivitamin and call it a day!
We can all validate and find scientific data on anything we believe to be so! Pro or con on dairy! Its all in what you resonate with ! All life is precious!

I always drank and loved raw milk at my grandparents farm. They sold their milk to a dairy who picked the large milk cans on the road in front of their driveway. They would keep a couple of mason jars of milk in the frig Love your vlogs.
Just as an observation, it’s so sweet that when you talk about the calves and their general worth, you keep touching your tummy which kinda seems to indicate you knew the sex of your baby. 😊 Super cute, and I love this whole video (and really all your videos).
Vitamin e powder is great to improve milk taste too! I thought I’d have a very holistically managed cow also but here I am feeding 16lbs of grain a day (nearly all carbs, very low protein). My Jersey cow has a beef cross calf who nurses 12 hours a day and she still gives us 2.5 gallons of milk. I bought her dry and never expected her to be such a high production cow! Despite managing her feed to keep condition on and milk production low, it still takes a hearty dose of grain.
The research I have read from actually holistic / natural viewpoint is that cows MUST have some grain to be healthy, and indeed in nature on a wild pasture that isn’t managed by humans, they would be consuming seed from the grasses (which is what grain is). So don’t feel bad about the grain feeding! 😊
Those folks who complain about this would starve to death if it weren't for grocery stores. In fact there are those who believe that people truly are starving, given the big grocery stores sell mainly little to no nutritional value in processed stuff they call food, but really isn't food for the human body at all. I often wonder if this is part of the reason why obesity is an epidemic in our country. If you aren't getting nutrients, it may be why people still feel hungry after eating and keep eating more to feel full. I dunno, but I do wonder.
To make feta cheese you don't use cow milk, but only sheep's milk or a mixture of sheep and goat's milk! I really admire all the work you do! I wish I could do half of it! Good luck with everything!

We'll never have a cow or goats so it's so nice to actually see your animals ❤ at least I'm lucky enough to be able to buy raw milk in Riverhead. They have Jersey cows too. I love this... I'll never have a cow unless I move (I'm not even allowed a chicken here within city limits), but I love learning more about the process. I hated when the dairy farmer I was getting my raw milk from sold his farm and Daisy wasn't being fully grassfed anymore. She was the only one in the area and we did try the other raw grassfed, but grain at milking and reacted to it (super sensitive to gluten/soy) so now I'm stuck with store grassfed or homemade oat milk. Still listening to this amazing podcast, as I pause it and walk back and forth and check on my kiddos and do our chores. But, I was wondering where we can find some of the recipes for the things that you had made out of your dairy milk? Like your mozzarella cheese, and kefir.
The calf butting the cow while nursing makes the cow let down her milk. We used to do that when milking if the cow wouldn't let her milk down. Do you have your cow tested for TB and Brucellosis? This is mainly why we were told not to drink raw milk; although all 5 of us kids grew up drinking raw milk. Molasses is very good/healthy to add a bit in their grain.
I love raw milk I drank a litre a day when I was pregnant with my 2nd child I craved it so much. Have moved since and don't have access to a farm at the moment and I miss that so much
Oh Lisa. We did get a jersey male last year for meat he wa smaller the farmer said but it the most tender meat ! I was skeptical at first because always bought meat from the store but I will never again buy beef or try not too from the store.
Could you by chance make a downloadable PDF of what you feed your cow and your calf? I know you set it on here. But it would be easier for me to see black and white. If not, I understand. And please know that I know what you do for your cow is what worked for you. Ours when we get them maybe different. What I'm saying is, I will hold you accountable for the information if it doesn't work. Thank you!
I feel that milk cows have been breed to give a lot of milk - far more than the needs of their offspring. If this hadnt happened maybe the calf would need the majority of the milk, but that is not the case with modern stock. That appears to be information that is missing from people who say the calf needs it etc etc. Like saying that chickens used just to find all their food from scratching around the yard - so why do we feed them. It is because they lay far more eggs than they used to back in the day. My chickens are free ranged and that is not to say that they dont benefit hugely from the bugs and so on that they pick up as well as the environmental enrichment they get from doing so. My instinct is to say try homesteading ways before you criticise it.
I don’t think milk is legal to sell for human consumption in my state, but a local fam sells raw “pet” milk 😉😏 and they tell you “it’s not our business who drinks it when you buy it and leave here” 😉😉😉 So just tip for others who may not be able to find a place that ADVERTISES raw milk for human consumption…there may be a farm near you that still sells raw milk.

The thing is in the store it’s not raw at all it’s pasteurized so there is literally no way there are any bacteria in it
Unless bacteria does make it's way in and the milk has lost all its defenses.

Interesting though...because we have been drinking raw milk regularly (at least 2 gallons every week) for 11 years and I can also say we've never been sick. 🤷♀️ Have you looked into the actual stats on deaths per year from raw milk?
@@Simplefarmhouselife we’ve been drinking raw milk as a family for about 8 years… I’ve drank it through my last 4 pregnancies, which is a big “no-no”… 😏
None of us have ever had any ill affects from it. In fact, my children love it and are thriving.
I enjoyed this video! I thought I'd add a comment on your answer to the first Q&A question: When you get raw milk from a local farmer, that farmer knows he/she will be facing you again, and that if you were to get sick from consuming the milk, you will return to them for an explanation or answers. If you buy a gallon of milk from the grocery store and get sick from consuming it (or any food), you might go to the store with questions and they'd send you to the company who produced the milk who might send you back through the many people/farms who provide milk to their company. In short, you'd never find a true cause and they know this. It's passing the buck. When you buy milk/eggs/meat/veg/fruit/etc. from a local-to-you farmer, you only have to go to one source for an answer to any question about a product. In my mind, this is a great reason for local farmers to do their best to bring us quality products~~because they want and need our business and they understand the risk they take in being responsible for a healthy/safe product. I hope that makes sense.

So glad you posted all this information on raw milk. I've been drinking it for years and making kefir as well. I am also confused on why folks don't question milk purchased from the store. I have a big production dairy farm close by and it saddens me to see the fifth those poor cows live in, but oh yeah drink that milk from the store. I also recently heard in the pasteurization process of commercial milk where they kill off all the beneficial bacteria, they don't remove all that dead bacteria from the milk, yum, yum -- No thank you!

@@Simplefarmhouselife honestly they’re just blinded by what they’re force fed since youth. I grew up in “liberal NY” as my husband calls it, my entire life. I was a vegetarian occasional vegan for over 10 years. Since I was 13! I’d walk down the streets of Manhattan with my Peta bag and get a “God bless you” from the passers by. If only they could see me now 🙄 they’d probably throw paint on me! Pigs, goats, chickens, ducks .. you name it. All grass fed and organic. There’s nothing like it! (Which you obviously know lol) and 2 outdoor guardian dogs. Outdoor! 🤭😮 I’d get text messages from my siblings weekly about how cruel that is.
Meanwhile mine have a fulfilling purpose. Not sitting on the couch watching tv, overweight and bored out of their mind like their dogs. But I’m the one in the wrong. Forgive me for writing a novel. I milked for years when my children were at home. I enjoyed your talk. But, there are people who are lactose intolerant. Me and my sons are. I can't digest raw milk either. I could tolerate my raw yogurt for many years, but that stopped about 10 years ago. You lose more and more of the enzyme as you age. Its hereditary in my family. My father was lactose intolerant as well. This includes goat milk. Keep up the good work educating people. Its very necessary in this world.
Most people have never been exposed to a farm and are really disconnected from where our food comes from; hence the mindset that the wrapped and cartons are safer. In my experience the only people who find it horrible to drink another mammals milk are hard core and very vocal vegans. I found your dairy cow information really interesting.

We had raw milk all our lives. Dad said that pasteurising was implemented because it was thought that Tuberculosis was spread through raw milk. i now think it was probably more about controlling the farmer and the people and prospering the big business.

Hey Lisa, I really appreciated this video. Salty milk... I have had salty milk twice. Once after freshening and once during drying up. We were letting the newborn calf have all the milk from a Jersey/angus cow not realizing the back quarters were being totally ignored. When we did milk her for the first time the milk was off colored and very salty. I read that when milk sits too long in the udder it gets "stagnant ". The next day the milk was fine. We saw a similar thing with the drying up milkings. My guess is you were having difficulty stripping the bag all the way in the beginning. I have dealt with a different cow in the past that had mastitis and it was totally different. The bag gets hard and lumpy, red and super sore. The milk is clumpy and gross. There was none of that with the salty milk experience.
We are now milking a purebred Jersey. I love your point about commercial versus homestead animal husbandry. Huge difference. Our cow Jayda is known as the farm princess and she not only is well cared for, she is well loved💗.
It is scary to me how many of my friends won't do any research on anything! They act like I am a weird because I want to know how things work....oh well. Yes and my state also makes it illegal to sell raw milk - what's next for humans? Soylent Green?

My grandfather told me of when he used to have to milk the cow every day before going to school until their cow died. In Oregon decades ago. My mind continues to be blown on so many things including raw milk. I hope to have at least 1 dairy cow for my family and I!
I really like your podcast. We started drinking raw milk, because store bought (or worse UHT) is just like some white colored water and I don't like the way the milk is produced. Therefore I really took the time to find a farmer that produces organically and I just asked her if she would recommend to heat it before consumption and she was just like "well, we as the family who produces it, consume it raw." I am form France and I always find it funny when I here that in America people tend to be affraid of raw mild and raw milk cheese because where I live it's totally normal to find raw dairy products in the store, even in big supermarket where I never go... And raw milk cheese are just so good, specially goat cheese omg there are so delicious !

We started drinking raw milk about a year ago from a trusted source and I now can't go back to store bought. It's disgusting. On multiple levels. Still working on the fermented veggies... right now I see one little speck of anything and the whole jar goes out lol. But I'm getting better with my technique and learning what's okay and what's not. I'll admit, I was getting a bit discouraged with my sauerkraut... but I finally had a success!! Cows will hold back cream but milk as well. Anxiety can reduce let down or if the calf is too young they will reduce milk.
This is one of my favorite episodes of the podcast! I hope to have a dairy cow one day and this inspires me. The thing about non-dairy milk being healthier makes me laugh. It's at best nuts with water and some vitamins/minerals added in. In that case, you might as well just eat the nuts with a multivitamin and call it a day!

I always drank and loved raw milk at my grandparents farm. They sold their milk to a dairy who picked the large milk cans on the road in front of their driveway. They would keep a couple of mason jars of milk in the frig Love your vlogs.
Just as an observation, it’s so sweet that when you talk about the calves and their general worth, you keep touching your tummy which kinda seems to indicate you knew the sex of your baby. 😊 Super cute, and I love this whole video (and really all your videos).
Vitamin e powder is great to improve milk taste too! I thought I’d have a very holistically managed cow also but here I am feeding 16lbs of grain a day (nearly all carbs, very low protein). My Jersey cow has a beef cross calf who nurses 12 hours a day and she still gives us 2.5 gallons of milk. I bought her dry and never expected her to be such a high production cow! Despite managing her feed to keep condition on and milk production low, it still takes a hearty dose of grain.

The research I have read from actually holistic / natural viewpoint is that cows MUST have some grain to be healthy, and indeed in nature on a wild pasture that isn’t managed by humans, they would be consuming seed from the grasses (which is what grain is). So don’t feel bad about the grain feeding! 😊

Those folks who complain about this would starve to death if it weren't for grocery stores. In fact there are those who believe that people truly are starving, given the big grocery stores sell mainly little to no nutritional value in processed stuff they call food, but really isn't food for the human body at all. I often wonder if this is part of the reason why obesity is an epidemic in our country. If you aren't getting nutrients, it may be why people still feel hungry after eating and keep eating more to feel full. I dunno, but I do wonder.

I love this... I'll never have a cow unless I move (I'm not even allowed a chicken here within city limits), but I love learning more about the process. I hated when the dairy farmer I was getting my raw milk from sold his farm and Daisy wasn't being fully grassfed anymore. She was the only one in the area and we did try the other raw grassfed, but grain at milking and reacted to it (super sensitive to gluten/soy) so now I'm stuck with store grassfed or homemade oat milk. The calf butting the cow while nursing makes the cow let down her milk. We used to do that when milking if the cow wouldn't let her milk down. Do you have your cow tested for TB and Brucellosis? This is mainly why we were told not to drink raw milk; although all 5 of us kids grew up drinking raw milk. Molasses is very good/healthy to add a bit in their grain.

Oh Lisa. We did get a jersey male last year for meat he wa smaller the farmer said but it the most tender meat ! I was skeptical at first because always bought meat from the store but I will never again buy beef or try not too from the store.

I feel that milk cows have been breed to give a lot of milk - far more than the needs of their offspring. If this hadnt happened maybe the calf would need the majority of the milk, but that is not the case with modern stock. That appears to be information that is missing from people who say the calf needs it etc etc. Like saying that chickens used just to find all their food from scratching around the yard - so why do we feed them. It is because they lay far more eggs than they used to back in the day. My chickens are free ranged and that is not to say that they dont benefit hugely from the bugs and so on that they pick up as well as the environmental enrichment they get from doing so. My instinct is to say try homesteading ways before you criticise it.
I don’t think milk is legal to sell for human consumption in my state, but a local fam sells raw “pet” milk 😉😏 and they tell you “it’s not our business who drinks it when you buy it and leave here” 😉😉😉
So just tip for others who may not be able to find a place that ADVERTISES raw milk for human consumption…there may be a farm near you that still sells raw milk.
Just keep looking. Many here do sell in communist Canada too!
