Hey Anwar, you know the story with foreign artists and what you call "gating". . . these guys get no where near the recognition they deserve. So I am thrilled when you take a deep cut from these guys like this and, at least just a few more people may learn about them.
For me, Nico and Vinz's "Black Star Elephant" is one of the most underrated albums of all time. No, there are no virtuoso musical performances, but the arrangement of the backings are so beautiful, so perfect! And these two former rappers are really stepping out with the vocals on this album, and specifically this song. And they have beautiful voices and they both are so worked together and tight. I have another reaction show host who immediately picked out this song has his favorite Nico and Vinz track. Checked a month later to ask if he still felt this way, and he said "hell yea!".
Looking forward to this one Anwar!
You always make my day when you do this!
Scandinavian melodies with afrobeats rhythms is a very potent and original music form embodied in the music of Nico and Vinz.
I love the melodic strings then contrasted by the drumming. Sets up a powerful vibe to the song.
I am absolutely loving your breakdown of the lyrics! Master class! All of your words, so much meaning and in context! Excellent finish to your show; I'm hooked right to the end!
So you've done a little bit of Guitar God music but not too much. Here's some guitar virtuosos you should listen too.

and thats just to name a few. These are all Guitar God Virtuoso and there are many more. But this is a great starting point.
I just love Vinz Dery as a vocalist! His voice and tone is so beautiful. And the two of them together weaving in and out are just magical in their musical chemistry.
"We really been on a tear with them, lately.". I love it!!!!!!!!!!
"Vinz be singing his behind off, though.". I couldn't agree more!!!
"They tend to use a lot of metaphors in their music"-yes!!! Definitely the vehicle and writing style of their music. They always have a message in the song; good catch for you as well picking up that the song also seems to have a "double-entendre" side to it as well. Had never picked that up before! Thank you Anwar for doing that!
"Vinz been singing his behind off, though!"-love that comment! That's a real jewel from this program, Anwar.
I absolutely love Vinz Dery's vocals. Since he "took the gloves off" on "Am I Wrong" to go from "sing-rapping" to full out singing, his vocal performances are always stellar and flawless. He has such a beautiful TONE to his voice! "I am a star, if you do not know" he does in his best Ghanain accent for a comedy skit, "me and that Cote D"Ivoire boy over there (Nico)". Fascinating and cool cultural stuff. They've got so many different cultures in their background with Norwegian/Scandinavian being a big part of the mix. You should hear on one of their programs a famous local Oslo rapper rapping in Norwegian! It's a trip! The flow is still there, but the language! So strange to my ear, but I absolutely love it!
Vinz Dery is, to me, a supremely enjoyable vocalist to listen to. Such a beautiful tone and register!
In fact, Vinz's tone is so good, you hear cello strings respond after each phase Vinz delivers at the beginning of the song. They are keying the song in on Vinz's voice.
Vinz Dery gave an interview where he talked about how he goes about writing songs and what he aims for. "We want to write music that makes you feel something". Bingo. This, for me is the strong suit of Nico and Vinz-masters of setting you into a mood or feeling.
Coming back for a second look at this program!
Now there is an African drumming connection here, Anwar. Nico's father is an African drumming artist and children's music teacher in Oslo. I would not be surprised he may have been involved in some of at least the arranging of the drum track(s) on this song, and also on the album in general. Nico grew up being taught by his father how to play drums in that style, so this is definitely an influence on their music.
I like you, Anwar, because you're not a pushover for a song in both your reactions and your analysis. You'll say it like it is, and you pick things up quickly. Like I've said before here, you've got a real talent in your analysis. You say a lot with few words. I like that. I like to get at directly the discoveries I come away from your program with. And believe me, Anwar, you've handed me more than a few of these in your reaction to these guys' music. I appreciate your programs and look forward to the next one!
Thanks!
Nico does write some really good lyrics in their songs-here you point out his lines "early nights and stage fright, her eyes are stage lights. . .". Maybe the best lines of the song? Also on "Am I Wrong", for me the best lines of that song are written by Nico, "walk your walk and don't look back, always do what you decide, don't let them control your life, that's just how I feel. Don't let them compare you no, don't reunite alone, that's just how we feel".
Nico seems to be the stronger lyricist (rapper?) of the two who can definitely sing with a smooth, buttery, beautiful tone to his voice, whereas Vinz's singing crosses into the divine with that beautiful high register tone of his. I never get tired of listening to his vocal deliveries!
You give Nico and Vinz fans some relief from the "gating" of this band, even if just for a little while.
Enjoy speaking with you about THE MUSIC and not the politics of the music industry. Although clearly Nico and Vinz have been affected by that as well (of course). They've recently left Warner and have started their own music label, Island Records. Problem is, there goes the money and the resources (for example, the Nico and Vinz touring bus/recording studio). Yes, they've accumulated and probably continue to accumulate funds, but they're back on the margins, but still moving forward. Shows for me specifically when they start using DJ's instead of a backing band, because, I get it, a backing band is much more expensive. But it's also much more grand, and they look awesome co-fronting the band on stage. We've already seen the live performance for "Intrigued".
Norwegian drums brother! These are two Norwegian dudes from Oslo!
And having sensed that you're not a pushover, I feel from the program that you really feel this specific song by Nico and Vinz. Would it be fair to say this is your favorite one you've heard by them to date?
Both Nico and Vinz both write good lyrics, but I find Nico's lines to be especially strong. You pointed out "early nights and stage frights. . . ."-Nico's line from this song.
I would also argue in their biggest hit to date, "Am I Wrong" (619 million views to-date), again Nico's lyrics are probably the most memorable part of that song, "walk your walk and don't look back, always do what you decide, don't let them control your life, that's just I how I feel (whoah-woh), fight for yours and don't let go, don't let them compare you, no, don't re-unite alone, that's just how we feel".
Nico is both a good rapper and singer. Vinz no longer raps as he's thoroughly taken up in his singing, as you can hear in this track.
Thanks!
