This suite is most often heard in the string orchestra version, but I have a special affection for it played on the piano, especially as the prelude is so superbly written for it. And Maria Grinberg's personality and artistry bring the music to vibrant life indeed!

Greig's Ballade is definitely worth hearing .I always thought this was an orchestral piece never heard this remarkable music before and grinberg is deservedly famous in piano circles .
After years of hearing the orchestral version, this version (and interpretation) was a revelation! In particular, the Aria brought out a depth of passion/pathos not revealed by the orchestral. Brava Maria!
This IS quite marvelously played...however, I don't know if you are aware, after all this time, that it is quite remarkably beautiful in it's string orchestra version? If you are not familiar with that after all this time, it is well worth your listening to that here on YT.... I recommend the complete version at "Grieg Holberg Suite Op. 40 グリーグ ホルベルク組曲" here... Enjoy this beautiful music for strings as well as here on piano!
If you like this then you should definitely hear her cycle of the 32 Beethoven piano sonatas. While I have them on CD, they are now available in one 10+ hour compilation. If you don't have Internet Download Manager you'll be in for a very long wait.

It's good music weaves a spell and she gets this music is its finest proponent .Did Gould play it he recorded the smallemotion ed Sonata which has none of the grandeur or long line of a Chopin,Liszt or even Mendellsohn Sonata .
The best solo piano work Grieg wrote, especially in this life enhancing performance. But there appears to be a problem when I try to download it. Only the first few notes download. I have tried this a number of times. It would be great if you could re-upload this marvellous and rare performance.

Grieg originally wrote it for the piano and transcribed as an orchestral piece when it was well received.

Invented? Hardly, as there are other examples from the 19th century, such as Saint-Saëns' Septuor, Op. 65; Delibes' Le roi s'amuse, and others.

I love her tone and sense of line, but I feel that it is overpedaled especially when the texture gets thick.
