8:06 - Did you already master these basics when you arrived?
9:11 - Is it because Europeans were only interested in street applications?

22:46 - What is the connection between a koryu like Kashima Shin-ryu and a modern budo like Aikido?
27:17 - Do you feel obligated or legitimate to make changes to what you have learned?

I started training in aikido, Aikikan Oslo, when I was kind of old, 36 years old. I loved the training, after having trained in kenpo karate I liked it much better. I never advanced so much, but I was learning. Later on I saw demos from Christian Tissier, and was blown away by his masterful aikido. This interview is fantastic for me, I’m 64 now and barring COVID restrictions am getting the itch again to train aikido. This interview with Tissier sensei was a revaluation, and explained all the things I didn’t quite understand when I first trained in it, such as that the knife techniques true purpose and even more that all the techniques basically end up being ONE technique, and even more so that there are DIFFERENT styles of aikido that are so personal. This is much to think about. I am too old to become anything near This level of aikido, but this interview gave me a spark and feeling that I do want to try more to work on my aikido. Thank you Christian for being such a great example.

You're never too old to grow as a person. Budo alone is not Budo. And a rank is but a rank. The person is of relevance.

Tissier Sensei has always been a class act. I was fortunate to train at his Dojo in 1990 and enjoyed his humility and fluidity it's nice to see he hasn't changed. Excellent Documentary.

Sensei Tissier your comments about Bercy at about the 29:15 mark are interesting. I was at Bercy for one of your demonstrations and I am Kyokushin. I noticed among the spectators there was talk of wanting to see something more realistic or more real, like Kyokushin, and how the aikido was boring. BUT the interesting thing is that among the Kyokushin instructors themselves I can say that many, or most of them were very impressed and excited by your skills and the beauty of aikido. And one high ranked Kyokushin competitor even left Kyokushin to take up full time study of aikido in Japan as a result of your mastery. So thank you, from Kyokushin, for your mastery.

Love Karate. Studied it for years. I am udansha under Seagal in Aikido. Studied that since 92. Promise you, nothing is more real than Aikido. The fact people think it isn't real is it's greatest advantage. God Bless

joopsnoop as someone who does kyokushin. You should look at some of the changes Mas Oyama did to the goju Ryu katas since Oyama had training in Daito Ryu aikijujutsu in his military days. This is the reason you see some aikido like bunkai of kyokushin kata since Daito Ryu is what aikido is based on

Tessier Sensei - thank you so much -very pleasing to get to know you a little even on video much appreciated -and to one of the points you raise about aikido and some of the other arts
i might say it this way - - many people translate Budo - as martial arts but a 'do' a 'way' is very different from a competitive approach in which people are trying to see who is better. whereas in a do especially aikido, we are a community working together to make us all better - as a clan did for its mutual benefit - some people seem to have a hard time understanding that and as such miss much of the value in our practice because they are studying fighting and winning over others. I respect everyone should follow their heart or interest that is their bestowed mission. Mine is Aikido specifically because it is not about competition but rather as the founder said, "Aikido does not call relative affairs good or bad but keeps all being in a constant state of growth and development and serves for the completion of the universe." which is why i love it. thank you for your work i find joy in watching your movements.

Hi Peter, I think than better than anyone, you have express the particular the conundrum that the IAF constitutes, with its theoretically democratic nature, while being an offshoot of what has become an iemoto system. I believe that Christian knows this well thanks to his knowledge of both Japan, and experience with French systems. There would be much more to be said but it is probably best left to one of our future private conversations, which I am very much looking forward to by the way! :)

Is Aikido a martial art ( i.e. street effective?)or an art form?

I am Udansha under Shihan Seagal. Yes, it is absolutely effective. If one is earnestly seeking truth in martial arts and budo. In other words, they want the truth? We will give it to them. We want them to think Aikido does not work. I owned a bar for years, and worked in the industry. I've used Aikido so many times, that I have forgotten some of the stories and employees and co workers will have to remind me when they talk about things that had happened.
I am not pulling your leg. If you want to do competition, then go for jujitsu, judo, or even Karate. All of them are great arts, but with the exception of the budo aspect of Karate, at this point they are all pretty much a lost in the real world, with real use. They are all sport. Aikido is not sport. It is practiced at a certain speed for good reason. It is very very dangerous. One wrong throw could end someone's life.

I would if I had the budget to travel there. Many people watch those videos but very few of them make contributions to see those projects come to fruition.
