  • A look into the differences between model years of the LT500R. The 1987 model was really the first generation while the 88-90 was the 2nd. In this video I take a look into what the most functional differences were between the different years.

    I’m 16, just bought myself an 87 quadzilla about two weeks ago. Definitely learned a few things in this vid. I’m currently replacing a bunch of stuff on my zilla like ball joints and tie rods but in a week or two it’s gonna be ready to rip.

      Glad to hear it was helpful! Make sure you get everything torqued, especially that pinch bolt on that lower ball joints! Had that come loose on a buddy's luckily the results where mostly uneventful!

      Dude you are lucky. I’m 34 and just got my first zilla last year. I dreamed of one when I was your age. Fix it up, don’t beat on it too hard, and never sell it, trust me.

      @@warwagoninc check frame really good for cracks, they aren’t the best frames. Like with any other quad, make sure it’s straight too. Check around cylinder ears for cracks, as it’s fairly common on zillas, especially if it’s been ported. Run through all the gears, make sure it shifts smooth. Ask what oil mixture he’s running in it, he should be running 32-1. Take out spark plug to make sure it’s not running lean, zilla motors tend to seize up when lean. Check all ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, and other bearings, also check steering stem for play in it. Check motor mounting points for cracks, around top motor mount is most common. You actually don’t even need the top motor mount, a lot of people remove it. Make sure the bolt holes are still there where the chain guard bolts on in case a broken chain has flung into the guard and snapped them off. Make sure intake tubes aren’t cracked since you can’t buy those anymore. If fender supports in the rear are bent then check subframe really good for bends/cracks. Also, know in advance parts are hard to find. Joining the zilla groups on Facebook helps a lot.

    Video really helped me dude. I just finished a frame up banshee build and now I got a crazy lead on a lt500r barn find . I'm a young guy 28 and love the vintage machines

    I too have been dealing with the blue screen lol, just waiting on my motherboard and RAM. Bikes almost ready though, just have to redo the seat cover and get the exhaust sandblasted. Keep the vids coming, it was really hard to find certain info on the bike when I needed it, these videos are a HUGE help to us younger guys

    I just aquired a 88 lt500R and ill have to say its definitely a learning game that I gota learn since I play with the Honda ATC 250Rs but I couldn't resist getting a 500 and something new to play with....Great video by the way you have a lot of good info that I will definitely take into consideration 👍

      Thanks for watching! This video was pretty rough, a lot of time involved. I started it thinking it wouldn't be too bad to put together but wow was I wrong! It just kept snowballing into more and more details. I'm actually considering doing an addendum to it as I missed a couple things I intended to cover and have since learned some new as well.

      You’re welcome, unfortunately I did not have examples of all 4 seats to film, it’s also why I skipped covering the exhaust differences as well. Anyhow I can tell you the following about the seats. The 87 was all blue with no wording. The 88 was all blue with a No Passenger heat stamped in the cover. The 89 has the same heat stamp, but also QuadRacer in white on the back. The 90 also has the heat stamp, but says SUZUKI in white on the back. Hope that helps.

    I remember the two quad zilla I had I had a 88 and an 8988 brand new off the showroom floor for 3400 bucks and the 89 had a 6 inch over swing arm. I bought it off a guy who is getting a divorce in Orange County And I loved both bikes they were beautiful razors and Sans skate twos pipe and car silencer Nerf bars, handlebars, front and rear bumpers my God, the bikes were beautiful and then I did both of them in black plastic. They were awesome I do miss them. Nothing compares to them not even the banshee, because the 500 you sat down behind it and the banshee you sit kind of on top of it and I don’t like that I wanna sit down behind the bike especially with 500 ccI do miss that bike and the stretched one was more of a drag racer. Anyway, sick bikes I had my God.

      Get on it harder and harder to find..everything is crazy through the roof right now $$$ sucks but makes mine worth a lot more I just had a barn find last year a Duncan Racing replica 525 big bore..I’m in process of breaking it down now with great guidance from our friends page here👍🏻

    I made a jig to convert 87 upper A-arms to 88 style. also made tabs to weld on the frame. FYI, the ltz400 lower A-arms use the same bearings.

    Very nice you nailed it I got a new 87 250 quad racer in 87 my buddy a 87 500 those were the days I was 15 I was so lucky to ride all those machines 250 R Honda’s as well pretty much everything except a banshee of all things back in the day but bought one of those in 99 but that’s what all that was left lol

      Thanks! You where lucky to ride all those! I was a little younger, started on a trx125 then a trx200sx and followed it with an LT250 then a 500 but the LTs where all used by then in the early 90s but where still decent shape. I've had an LT500 in some fashion since about 93.

    The 88+ A-Arm is 41% of the 87. Or 59% lighter. Jacob, if you need front control arm bearings, mig on 4 new tabs and replace it with the 88+.

    Hi Cyrus, great video and the information was very informative. Do you know where to get the upper arm bearings? what is someone suppose to do when they have to replace them?

      Thanks Nin glad you enjoyed it! So far I personally haven’t had to source those parts yet. Let me check around I believe someone had posted a bearing size or number they found that would work. The races on the other hand would have to be made. I’ll see what I can find.

      Thank you! Parts are getting hard to obtain no matter where you live it seems! If you have a 7 stud head, then it has the later year cylinder, they are interchangeable.

    Hello I know this is about 500s but the 1987 250 also had the 8 pedal read cage and was also changed to the 6 pedal in 1988 and up

      You are correct about the reeds themselves, but the cages are different on the 87s between the 250 and the 500. 88 and up they used the same assembly. I probably messed up explaining that.

    I am a fan of the old Zilla. I ?Grew up? on one. My dad and all his friends had them and we would rally around the Oregon dunes. I now have the one my dad first bought. It is an '87 and it is hard to start. You mentioned the Electron Carb. I recently was reading about these. Do you have any advice you are willing to share? Model? Tips to run them on a Zilla? I also have a big bored YFZ 450. Just as you say. Different tool, different jobs. I do have to say there is not much like riding the ol' Zilla but I sure appreciate the electric start of my YFZ. I dig your enthusiasm. Keep it up.

      That's awesome that you still have your dad's Zilla! Being hard to start any idea how many hours the top end has on it? I'd start with a compression test before switching around carbs. Especially if it was fine before and started getting more difficult. Is it a mostly stock machine? I'm a fan of the Lectron due to constantly chaning elevations. They can be some work to get dialed in but once there it's really nice just being able to bump the powerjet screw in or out for some fine tuning. Which model carb really depends on pipe, cylinder, porting, etc. Electric start is pretty hard to beat, been noticing it more as I get older.

      Thank you, and congrats! Depending on what you are looking for, you can still get some OEM stuff from like Rocky Mountain, Babbits, Partzilla. If you're looking for some aftermarket you can try HSDracing.com. Facebook groups are a good place as well. And there's also ebay. I've been running 50:1, and using 10-40 synthetic motor oil in the trans.

    Ended up getting a 1990 Quadzilla. Found out the reeds were bad so I bought a stock set. Turns out I have a aftermarket reed cage (I think fmf, which is no longer made) what are my options? Can't seem to find reed cage options for it

      Pickup a set of Moto Tassinari VForce 3 reeds. Just confirm it’s a small reed cylinder before ordering. I’ve seen them sold various places. Amazon, eBay.

    You mentioned you use Lectron Carbs. Can you elaborate on why you like them vs the traditional 43B-20’s? I’m very curious as I like Lectron’s on my Yamaha’s. Just got an 89 Zilla and trying to decide.

      Ease of tuning mostly. We jump around to a lot of different elevations from like 3/400ft to 7/8000ft and places in between. Twisting a metering rod and turning the power jet screw is much easier then carrying a box of jets around.

      @@QuadGuyCy What about a 540cc Trinity motor with a Duncan/Paul Turner Exhaust and Pyramid Reeds at under 1000ft elevation. Safe bet or would my 43B-20 with meeting be better in your opinion? Just curious.

      @@Noslo_559 Hard to say, the Trinity porting is on the mild side. Has your carb been bored? Or is it still completely stock? I’m not a big fan of the pyramids they don’t seem to let the engine rev out like the vforce 3s do.

      The prices I've seen for OEM plastics in the last coupe years is crazy. Best bet would be to join a couple of the facebook groups and ask around.

    When was the first year on the quadzilla they came out with the block because I looked at a 1987 Zoe and it didn't have the block it had a setup like the lt250r quadracer and you could turn it with a pipe wrench I didn't think the block came out until 89

      Also first year LT500 is 1987. And if you are referring to the chain adjustment the LT500 all years was the block style. Suzuki carried that design over to all years of the Z400 as far as I know. If you are thinking of the round carrier, chain adjustment, that was the first gen LT250.

    Since the intake is much larger on the 87 would you think it would make more power than later years?

      In stock form I can't say that I've ever really noticed a difference. When you start porting the cylinder and raising the compression that's a different story. Most of the Zillas in our are pretty heavily modified.

    Is the 2-stroke ATV sport dead?
    Wish Honda and Suzuki bring back those great two stroke sport quads, TRX250R and LT500R.

      Unfortunately sport quads have been on life support for a long time now. These older 2 stroke machines are getting pretty niche these days. The Banshee and the Trx250r have the most aftermarket support as those are the most popular, the LT on the other hand is pretty limited. It’s kind of a sad state where things have gone. Hopefully it turns around someday but the 2 strokes are probably never coming back.

    I don't want to try start it and have the engine explode.

      @@adamnft4341 if you have instagram you can message me there. First off clean it, check the air box, intake, and exhaust for any creatures that may have decided to make a home. I’ve seen them completely plugged up by various members of the rodent family. Check it over for anything necessary that maybe missing. Check the fuel tank, put a small amount of fresh fuel in the tank and shake it around then dump the fuel into a bucket see if there is any garbage in the tank. If so clean accordingly. Pull the carburetor apart and inspect. May or may not need cleaned/rebuilt. Pull the spark plug, then use the kick starter to rotate the piston see if it will move, if it does make sure it feels smooth. If that seems all good check if you have spark. Also If you have a compression tester check it. Then drain the transmission oil, check the oil for garbage. If it’s clean, put in fresh. Drain the coolant, most likely flush the cooling sytem with a hose. Refill make sure nothing leaks. If all that checks out you can put it back together and see if it will run. If it starts listen for any “bad” sounds. Let the engine get up to temp check for any water leaks. Lastly and most important if all that checks out and you go to ride it, go over the brakes and check those are all working before hand.

      Impellers have been discontinued unfortunately. A few people have posted in some of the Facebook groups about maybe making some billet ones but I haven’t seen any for sale yet. The seals are still available, you can order those any place really, partzilla, Rocky Mountain atv etc. I have a video I started with all the tips and tricks I know on the water pump. I need to get that done and posted.

    Can you do a video on the lectron carbs? I have a 40mm ported factory carb on an older trinity ported 88 cylinder and I’m considering trying the lectron but don’t want to waste money if it’s not an actual gain. Thank you.

      I'll certainly add that to my to do list. For me, the biggest advantage is the tuning of it. I jump around to different elevations a lot, from 300 to like 7500 and you can tune what Lectron calls the power jet with the turn of a screw which is super convenient when your out in the sand.

      I’d say join a few of the LT500 groups on Facebook and look around, or make a post looking for one. They pop up here and there but definitely not every day. They are getting harder to come by.

      Thank you! I have a 250 but haven’t had much time to get to anything lately. I actually have plans to get a some 250s together and do a similar video at some point in time. There’s sis much to the 250s it might actually take several videos. Also with the 250 a lot depends on which generation you get, 1,2,3

I’m 17 and I recently baught an 85 model , and there is little to no information on it, aswell as the best modifications to make . I have to look at forums from 2004 and try and dig out anything I can lol . By the way, the 500 is my dream quad , I hope to have one when I’m older . Great video

      @@Yavi250r They've definitely not received the attention they deserve in my opinion. Same goes for the 500, which is why I started this to begin with. Most of the 500 content I was able to find was not very good or helpful which was why I started this. I'll see what I can come up with for some 250 stuff. I do have a friend with a 1st gen I could film and I have 2nd stuffed in a trailer somewhere. I really need a shop though at the moment.

    Biggest problem with the air box is junk
    Plastic, we mocked up 2 inc abs plumbing pipe with a chop and center line on top to angel around the rear shock spring with a k&n 3x4.5x9" long filter with an outerwear , came off the top of the new aluminum pipe with a 1 Inc round solid aluminum and drilled and tapped for original brace bolt,
    I had the aluminum pipe mig by a local shop

      Yea, they all are. Plus with these things getting to be 30+ years old the plastic is starting to get brittle. I don't run one, but I also only ride mine in the sand. I may put one on the next one I build so I can hit the dirt with it, but dirt and mud just destroys things so badly. Sounds like a neat setup, any pics?

      @@QuadGuyCy let me tell you that the aluminum thin wall coundit was tight to get around the spring like 3/16 clearince, took 3 pcs to get around and straight out 2 7/16 inch OD and T bolt clamps , used reinforce rubber hose like marine hose on a pwk 39 bored to 41 , milled Head , did all the reinforcement on the head ears to except the same nuts as the other 2
      That go down inside, haven't had it out in years , but watching the video gets my mind going it's a 88 bought it when I was 43 now 65 , going to Costa Mesa Sand sports this Saturday and I have to look at the new speed UTV , quad needs to run on race gas and motoul 800 only tried them all gotta spend some money to keep Piston cool but no more top ends after that I have it written down but I think it liked around 40 or 50 to one , always blead the air off the top of the head after you worme up every time and where you stop on a hill

      Good question, I could probably make a 5 minute video out of it. I would say if you're looking for a completely stock ready to ride machine, I would look for the cleanest 88+ with the 7 stud cylinder you could find because of the frame changes, a-arms, and head gasket issues.If I was being really picky I'd try to find a 90. If you're not planning on staying stock and want to build something there's not really a wrong choice.

Your video really helped me, and I think the 1st year production of ANY bike is usually a mistake.. That extra stud I heard did fix that gasket problem.. If you know of any good

    Would you recommend this quad? How should you maintain it? Is it reliable?

      I would say it depends on what you plan to do with it. I don't think there is a better quad for sand, desert, and wider open trails. But it you're in tight, twisty, technical terrain, you can do it, but I feel there are better options if that is your primary use. For instance I also have a Honda 400EX I use for the woods and mud. Maintenance is really the same as any off road machine, change fluids regularly, check the torque on the cylinder, head, and engine cases regularly. The 87 in my riding videos has gone 3 years and around 150/200 hours of operation, and just recently I lost an ignition coil. One of the biggest issues I see are people buy these and don't seem to accept the fact that they are 30+ years old and should really be completely gone through before they decide to ride it.

      @@hovavrom It really depends on how tight the trails are. In most places these days if people are driving side by sides in the same trails you’ll be fine. Raptors are decent, I’ve always found the seat height a bit tall for my liking, at least in stock form but they are torquey! Also some people feel they have to have reverse so there’s that. One thing for sure if you buy a zilla and don’t like it you shouldn’t loose any money on it in today’s market.
