I’ve had my salon in my home for 18 years and love it because I’ve been able to be there for my children always and have kept my same clients through the 08 collapse and COVID.
I like the way you talk. You have a nice voice, easy to listen to and I love how you get to the point, not dragging out the video and not talking about yourself . It's so important I think. Keep it up 🙂
Esthetician student here that’s considering opening up a home salon when I’m certified! This might be a very simple question but I’m not that knowledgeable in retail just yet. How does selling retail work? Do you make your own products? Do you have to partner up with a company in order to sell products? Loved your video- very beautiful space! 💕
Hey Erin! Having a home business is awesome in our industry. I bet you will love it! As for retail, you can purchase products wholesale at your supplier and then double the cost and retail it. You can also contact companies (for example, I often order directly from KMS), make a wholesale order, double your cost and retail it that way.
You just double the price and add sales tax . When you have a business license you can buy products you will sell without tax. In the old days people may have tripled the price...now you cannot have clients pay more if something sells at sephora or amazon. For example, we sell olaplex. It costs me $14 for a shampoo, so I sell it for $28 plus tax ( since that is what it retails for)because I have to pay sales tax at the end of the month to the state. We also sell davines which I order and we pay for shipping.
Once someone I know contacted me same day which was a Sunday if I can do their hair and told them the price they started to negotiate pricing with me! At that moment I knew I need to set boundaries!
Thank you so much for the tips! I will be looking for a home that I can build my salon in as well! I will make sure to listen to your words of wisdom! 🙏
I am currently in school taking a full specialty class and would love to have a small home salon form home to do nails/lashes/makeup etc some day. this video helped so much. thank you (:
Thank you for sharing 😊❤ I’ve been researching here in Texas to do the same but everyone keeps telling me I am not plowed to open a busines/salon in a home. The zoning does not allow it 😢 Do you have any information that might be able to help me?
Yes it’s fantastic during the pandemic. You just have to be sure to continue following all safety protocols so you don’t risk bringing Covid into your home. I wear masks and disinfect after every client.
I've had my in home salon for 12 years and bored with organization around the station. I'd love to see how you organize towels, shears, capes, brushes and styling products near your workspace. Also when booking clients I normally do text 98% of the time. I no longer work on weekends just in-between carpool times Monday through Friday. Do you allow yourself an hour a day for booking or moving clients around in your work hours or outside that time frame? My kids get so tired of me on my phone all the time. I explain I'm not looking at shoes or Instagram hair, I'm booking appointments and normally have 80 at one time I'm trying to juggle. I'm no longer taking new clients and insisting on having prebooking clients only. I always give in because money is always to be made. Unfortunately my self care and my home isn't where I'd love it to be. Struggling a bit. I love learning from others. I'd love yours or others opinion. Thanks.
Thank you so much for content, it is very informational and gives a lot to think about I am a AZ licensed stylist..can you tell me steps to legally start home salon???
Thanks so much!!! I admire your home saloon👌👌 You are amazing and generous with advice. Is that ok to leave clients in the salon to pick up your kids from school?
I would say no simply because the customer is always priority because they are paying for a service. It is best to either find someone that you car pools with ( you do morning and they do afternoon) they go to daycare for a little while or just not have the appointment at the times you're needed as a mother
I am sure she meant to say that she would schedule around picking her kids up, leaving time to allow for that before the next client will be getting there.
How do you get this approved with your city, I tried to get a permit today to make a beauty shed and I was denied because I can't use the shed for commercial use because I love in a residential area
Yes no kids! It just looks SO UNPROFESSIONAL. Unless they're your clients kids. That's obviously fine but your kids shouldn't be running around topless in the salon and then give the client a bill for $350.00. LOL

I am based out of southwestern Ontario in Canada.
I would recommend you look into fortified shampoo for fast hair growth.
