so, I'm a middle school special education teacher, and one of my favorite phrases that I tell the students is "if you watch any person for long enough, you will see them do something 'weird'".
I love John Wilson he's such a fascinating person. Several people I've shown the HBO show to have said it must be fake in some way but i kept trying to explain it's just that this dude has been filming everything for years
Ive led a pretty wild life to the point when I tell people stories I always get calls of BS so I stopped telling them. What's super weird though is that I never knew my stories were out of the ordinary until this happened. To me it was just life. As a result I tend to believe people until I have a good reason not to because I wish that was how people treated me.
How to Cook the Perfect Risotto is, imo, high up in the canon of the best TV episodes ever made. it's one of the pinnacles of what this medium can achieve, and (apologies to Bo Burnham) it's the absolute best depiction of 2020 I've seen.
John Wilson and Joe Pera are two of a couple people out there doing something really unique and understated with TV comedy, and I will really miss both their shows so much.
I stumbled upon the show. Watched how to find a bathroom. Realized early in that it wasn't going to help me find a bathroom, but rather how to appreciate finding a bathroom and how the search is part of the journey of life
this was such a fascinating video to watch especially since it's the first time I've even heard of this show or of John WIlson. you've inspired me to check it out. also, as a non-american, I have a newfound sense of terror and awe for new york city and the inhabitants of new york
I've got the biggest smile just hearing this guy drop the name of one of my favorite shows right as I'm thinking to myself "Jeez, he really sounds like John Wilson."
Thank you for taking the time to put all this together. I’ve always felt the show is seriously amazing but have never quite been able to pinpoint the unique aspects of the show that make it so meaningful. This certainly helped deepen my appreciation of the show and his work. Great video!
I pitched a show 20 years ago about a guy(Ron Rybacki) who had been doing this in Woodstock, NY and wherever he went for 20 years. The final result of such is all that I had hoped!
i love this sub genre of reality tv because it is the first time artifice has actually been stripped. it’s still produced and we’re still watching thru the lens of Nathan fielder or John Wilson or whoever, but they’re showing us how everyone wants to be seen. I don’t know if this kind of media could exist successfully before pervasive loneliness became the new normal. as someone pervasively lonely, it’s pretty cathartic.
yes im glad ppl are talking abt this show. i feel like now that its over ppl are gonna look back at it as an underrated gem and get like an upsurge in popularity . i hope so at least
This channel has been my exposure to such excellent shows. Adding this one into the Fielderverse. I hope you do a whole series retrospective for Barry! I've been wanting to hear your opinions on it, especially with how the last season turned out and how it fits into the show in the grand scheme of things
I saw the thumbnail and got so excited that it might be about Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared- which is kinda interesting because the two shows in contrast are simultaneously very similar, yet nothing alike.
as soon as you began talking about shot composition, i instantly thought of Folding Ideas, and was pleasantly surprised to see a clip of his included right after
2:35 This reminds me of Working by Studs Terkel, and I actually think I heard an interview of this director/producer on the radio and he said that was an inspiration... but I could be mistaken
12:11 That is the endearing part. He is just documenting and it doesn't have a bias. It is refreshing to get media that just captures the absurdity of life.
i got to about 8 and a half minutes in before my paranoia about being filmed in public became unbearable. as a person who moves oddly, speaks/sings to myself, and sometimes has panic attacks in public, i'm constantly worried that someone's gonna whip out their phone and put me on tiktok. this show sounds fascinating, but unfortunately, i can't enjoy it because i keep wondering if the people being filmed gave consent
I know this is a late reply but if I recall, on television you have to get consent from the person you are filming, otherwise you have to blur out their face. Social media doesn't have that but I'm fairly certain for TV it's a law or something, so if you see someone's face, then they gave consent. I completely relate to your experience though, so I hope what I said helps a bit since the show is so good!
There is a twitter plaintext meme that goes like " ...if you just did something like going to the supermarket and experienced it fully without the goggles of habit and catégories you would go crazy with pure sense and joy..." That vibe lives rent free in my head and seems to be a foundation of this show.
It's weird but I understand the guy being proud about training one of the 9/11 hijackers. Like, I train people to do judo. I have no control over what they do with it. I can analyze a person all I want, but I can't tell you who's just awkward or irritable occasionally versus who's going to do bad shit. So you kind of have to let go of the idea of control when you teach, and just hope you can inspire a passion in someone. Sucks it'd be a catastrophe, but you can't control who will love the thing you teach.
What got me is that he wrote a whole book about it. He may not be responsible for what the hijacker did, but there’s nothing in me that would want to connect myself to anyone guilty of such horror.
To watch an interesting show, one must make effort to actually pay attention to what's going on. You'll be able to easily absorp any information that comes to your mind.
8:55 Welcome to the club of YT essays that explain the Kuloshov effect in detail! I literally saw another one just yesterday, but at least you didn't use that Hitchcock clip. Sorry if this sounds mean, it's just a really over-done thing. The video is still great :)
@@TheRockerX 😂 Great comment! I liked how you re-used the thing I said, that was funny. Maybe it's just a thing where after enough time, any YT video essayist talking about film/TV will eventually mention the Kuloshov effect, kind of an infinite monkeys with typewriters thing 🤔 So yeah if you watch enough of them then maybe you're bound to see that?
How To is a great show that I really wish HBO had any interest in promoting, because I devoured seasons 1 and 2, and didn't even realize season 3 was out until I saw people posting about it online.
Hey I think you should definitely do a copaganda video on last shift/malum. They’re both horror films that are entirely police centric and there’s crazy differences in how they represent police presence between the two. Definitely worth a look. Literally in the midst of malum tho so no promises on the content of that one
How to is a great reminder that there is a world out there and it is mostly full of really fucking weird shit and how almost every person can teach you a new emotion you never knew existed. All you have to do is be genuine to yourself and others. And say yes to most things.
Yes and no. I think there’s a randomness that most major cities could create, however he explicitly pulls unequivocal shots of “only in NYC” shots. So while you could do it, it would be slightly off as he’s created the environment it’s own character.
I have never heard of this guy or this show but I was 15seconds into this video when I thought to myself “this guy must only be one degree of separation from Nathan Fielder. It was so satisfying figuring out I was completely correct on that a few min later. 😅
Okay great video, but seriously, most people don’t walk correctly. People walk with shoulders that are hunched or slouched, pelvic tilt, pigeon feet, weak glutes causing lower back overuse, nerd neck etc.
The concept for this show sounds like it was inspired by an Australian show called "Review with Myles Barlow." I won't even try and describe it because I couldn't do it justice but if you can find it I highly recommend.
After watching the whole video I realise that's not the case however I still highly recommend it, this appears to be much more about the absurdity of real life rather than straight comedy
“How to with John Wilson is as much about howing to as it is johning Wilson” may be your best observation yet. MFA level critical observation and I am loving it.
Can you please do Taylor Sheridan? Like Mayor of Kingstown or Yellowstone? As an enjoyer of most of his stuff I’d love to see a breakdown of how I’m being manipulated and propagandized.
I watched the entire show back to back the order the episodes released I can safely say I have no idea who Jon Wilson is and why HBO gave him a budget. also there’s a voice in my head saying “Nathan Fielder” now. I don’t even know who that is.
so, I'm a middle school special education teacher, and one of my favorite phrases that I tell the students is "if you watch any person for long enough, you will see them do something 'weird'".
I'm an ex special ed kid, this made me feel good. You're a good teacher, keep it up.
We've had a fridge magnet in my house since before I was born. It reads, "The only normal people are the ones you don't know very well."
I love John Wilson he's such a fascinating person. Several people I've shown the HBO show to have said it must be fake in some way but i kept trying to explain it's just that this dude has been filming everything for years
It’s kind of funny you say that because of what happens in the second to last episode of the series
Ive led a pretty wild life to the point when I tell people stories I always get calls of BS so I stopped telling them. What's super weird though is that I never knew my stories were out of the ordinary until this happened. To me it was just life.

Nothing. It has to do with the comment it's responding to.@@Buckertrown

Very interesting, never heard of this before. His little vignettes of weird happenings in New York seem like "street photography" just in video form.
this was such a fascinating video to watch especially since it's the first time I've even heard of this show or of John WIlson. you've inspired me to check it out. also, as a non-american, I have a newfound sense of terror and awe for new york city and the inhabitants of new york
Do you have any new york city questions for a brooklynite since my birth in 1983?
That "how to teach yourself to read" article made me lol hard
never has a show about avatar fans or vacuum enthusiasts made me tear up before. thank you john wilson

I like how you styled the video like the show. Always fun when a youtuber I like discusses another piece of media I like.
I have been waiting so long for you to do sheriffs in copaganda. So excited for it!
The show is surprisingly sweet and genuine
I'm sorry Jackson, I am for real, that was a great intro, hooked me right away, glad I didn't skip it

It’s my comfort show.
In Latin America we enjoy the "Tiranos Temblad" channel. Is the uruguayan version of Wlson.

I thought so too lol. Thanks for reminding me that exists.
I thought I was alone in that show’s existence ❤️👈🏾

"I loved you from 'Line goes up'" 💀

This and The Interview are the two must see shows you’ve convinced me of (whenever I get HBO max)
I did not know how much I needed this.
This is one of the first SI episodes on a show I've actually seen, and it truly is a fascinating one.

I love this show. The scaffolding episode is my favorite. It was also cool to see the Alligator Lounge cause I used to go there with friends
One of my favorite shows in last few years
How to cover your furniture is the weirdest funniest thing I’ve ever seen
Should’ve talked about the masterful bread scene.
Hey! I saw a post about how Harry Potter is copaganda, and it makes so much sense -- would be great to see you cover that :D
seeing the footage from the "bread scene" promo clip made me laugh even though you were trying to be serious
Fantastic as always.
