I saved my sister's dog's life with CPR after she jumped over a small wall with her leash secured. My daughter ran in and told me that June (dog's name) was dead. She looked dead, and wasn't breathing. I performed CPR and she came around. We threw her in the car to take her to the vet. Besides her eye sticking out a lot more than it used to, she was fine. Thank you for teaching people CPR for dogs, it's incredibly similar to human CPR, and this video could really help save a dog's life.
Its 2 am and I got super paranoid about my dog suddenly not breathing or not having a pulse (completely out of no where) but now i'm less stressed lmfao
My dog just died I used the CPR but it was too late we keep trying for 7 minutes and there was no vet opened in our town because it was 9 0clock so I feel terribly bad because she was only 2 half months and this was the second death of our puppies 😭💔💔💔💔😢💔😢😢😢💔😢💔💔💔💔😭😢💔💔😭💔😭💔😭😢😭😢😭😢😭 can you give me advice on anything 🙏🙏🥺😢
sir, I'm a junior in high school and I took a medical classes but we only learned to do cpr on a human. I wish I had learned for animals too. I'm glad I found this video but I wish I found it sooner. just last night my dog had a heart attack or somthing I'm still don't know what happened. and I thought I know what to do but the second I got to the scene I froze because I did not know the first thing about compressions on a dog, I did what I thought was right but for breaths I had no clue about, sadly I failed and I no longer have my best friend, so I appreciate this video cause I know now so if my other dogs have a problem I can be ready.
Even if you did know, the survival rate for dogs (and cats I believe) are extremely low and without vasopressors, I believe it's even harder to resuscitate.
Thank you! Also I've heard to cup your hands around the dogs lips when giving breaths (without blocking the nostrils of course) so the air doesn't escape through the mouth. 😊And when you give 2 breaths, take a fresh breath of air so there is less CO2
I lost my beloved dog the other day and never thought about dog CPR which we needed desperately at that moment. Now I review dog CPR after loosing my dog. All PET owners must know how to do CPR on their beloved dog.
I watch CPR videos from time to time just to keep it fresh in my mind because its not something i do every day and sometimes i forget the numbers of repeats etc. I have a 6 years old Yorkie with problem on his trachea (not collapsed yet but has breathing difficulty) and today i wrote down on a paper the whole procceedure and i feel much more relaxed now having the info handy. I hope i will never need it ! Thank you very much for the video sir.
I'm so glad I found this video after this video something happened to my dog last night he woke up and I think he had a heart attack or he was sleeping wrong but he wasn't breathing and I did the same thing what the video said I'm so happy I found this your probably not going to read all of this but I did CPR on my puppy
Great video ,thank you. Tried a free course but was all text based, no visuals. This video was a great supplement to the course and in many ways superior.
2 years late but maybe someone reads this and is not sure themselves. Yes you still perform CPR after suffocation. If something is stuck in the airway there is a good chance you can dislodge it with the compression or the respiration. Better to have the object in the lung than a blocked airway so don't be scared of the respiration when something is blocking the airway.
With all due respect, doctor… You’re forgetting to tell people to wrap their hands around the dogs mouth so the air that you’re breathing through their nose does not escape through the flaps of their mouth. Thank you for this video!
When do you stop and take the dog to the hospital? How long should you continue that CPR? Thank you so much!! Best video to save a dog's life just in case!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
You don't stop until someone else takes over (at the hospital) or you give up (no response). There is no definite time. In people you continue until exhausted or you know it won'r work (hard decision).
I don't know if it's changed for animals, but I know for humans you no longer do a blind finger sweep if you can't see what they've aspirated on because it can push it further back. I'd definitely hesitate doing a blind finger sweep on an animal for the same reason.
This hasn't changed and it's because of the anatomy. In most dogs, you can't see to the back of the oral cavity. So, we need to go blind to do it at all.
I wished I knew about this Saturday night when my little mini pin Maggie died of parvo :'( I froze didnt know what to do but my husband & I did the best & all we could to save her .
Thank you so much for this! Really helpful! Would just like to confirm if the dog needs to be put on their right side so their heart is at the top? Or can it be any side? Cheers!
I wish I found this sooner my dog passed away from suffocating from her saliva, I tried to do some sort of cpr on her but clearly it looks like I was doing it wrong. But it was somewhat enough to almost make it to the hospital. Sadly she passed in my arms while getting to the emergency room
I have two English bulldogs. English Bulldogs have more of a barrel-chest. Should I have my hands in a specific position and location on the body or just like in the video?

Believe it over not I never thought about giving a dog cpr. It never flew over my head until I saw a view of a owner and dog in the water. The owner threw the stick into the river and the accidentally drunk too much water which caused him to drown. In the comments below he explained what happen afterwards saying he gave his dog cpr and is fine. That’s when I got curious and now here I am.
Someone please answer this question, wile doing CPR on a dog how do you know if the heart starts beating again? Cuse we don't got time to check the pulse wile doing CPR so how do you know if the heart starts beating again ??
What you'll see is the animal coming around with little movements or breathing. If you see that, take the time to check the pulse - it should be there. If there is no response evident, continue!
God I wish I had this when my dog passed away 2 days ago. I feel really guilty for not knowing this. She wasn’t stiff when I found her so I feel like I could have done something...
Sir.... With due respects I want to know that Will we have this much time to check all these things...... I mean if we starts checking all these things we might run out of time to save the dog
Should the mouth of the dog or cat be held close when blowing air into the nose? Or, should our mouth also cover over the nose and mouth when blowing air ?
That would be bad news. Then the air can't get in and, without that, resuscitation will fail. If that occurs, you push on the chest (hard) to push the blockage out or you get a veterinarian to open the airway surgically.
What happens if the airway is blocked you can’t dislodge the foreign object and the veterinarian clinic is far away from your home I have a 3year old Belgium malinios who thinks he has to eat like flash (marvel character) and seems to choke himself a lot on his food I try soft food he does the same I’ve tried making them smaller chopping every piece smaller he does the same he even does it with liquids as he drinks it to fast and stick his whole nose in the water bowl to the bottom I’m just interested to know it’s not like he’s eating so nobody else gets it as we only have 2 hamsters each hamster is in my children’s own rooms we have 2 rabbits in there cage in a warm garage (not used for the car) and we have 3 pigeons who we have rescued with broken wings which we have fixed ourselves with splints as our vet wouldn’t treat them as they are racing pigeons he said birds are really hard to come round from surgery so we had no option to do it ourselves they are all healed up and healthy we tried several vets to take the birds to treat them as they were all hit by cars when we contacted the owners they said we don’t want them back as they are no good for racing just do us a favour and snap there necks because there isn’t any point in having them for them to cost us money when we can’t race them the heartless pigs I told each and everyone of the owners if I could have written consent that they hand over the birds to myself and I will look after them just incase they accused me of theft (got to be smart about these things) they are wonderful loving birds who love my kids and land on them and follow them round sweet really but I had to give them a chance at life I really did I couldn’t break there necks for wings come on I love all my fur babies and feather babies thankyou for your time hope everyone had/has a very happy amazing Christmas if you celebrate it ☃️🎄❄️☃️🎄❄️☃️🎄❄️and a fantastic new year🎉🎈and I hope each and everyone of you have a healthy happy blessed new year and none of us here have to perform cpr on our wonderful fur babies 🐕 🐶 🐈 🐱 sending you all the love to everyone all the way from the uk 🇬🇧

Wished I had watched this video last night...I had to use my Human CPR training and best judgement to perform CPR and mouth-to-snout resuscitation on my dog last night - luckily what I did worked. Last night he was dying, this morning he was doing backflips.

My dog got a bone piece stuck in her throat once and passed out, My girlfriend got it out then she woke up, after that when she get bones stuck in her throat she runs to me to get it out, very glad that she does that, but I always keep her in my sight when she eat bones just in case after that :)
ACE Academy for Canine Educators I got an labrador retriever and they like to eat fast espacially when the cat is around, She gets fresch elk/cow bones, not the other sh*t you buy in super markets for 1$, She eats them to keep her teeths healthy and they are so natural it could be for a dog :)
Question; when you breathe into the nose, do you have to do anything with the mouth? i know with humans it's all a continuous open system so if you don't close the nose, the air won't go into the lungs. Is there something different about a dog's anatomy that means you don't have to close the mouth? Thanks for the vid! Saw a video on FB about a lady with an unresponsive dog and I figured I'd better learn how to do this in case my Yorkie ever has issues.
and also compress about 1/2 to a 1/3 of the width of the chest on that cardiac region? because it looks very fragile and small in whippets (i've 2 dogs)
Great video but I wish this got to the point a lot faster. Like a 1 minute video. This is way too long to watch when you're dealing with an emergency situation and most people don't even think to watch these videos until they need it.
Because its probably something you should learn BEFORE you actually need it. If you're watching it during an actually emergency, then you are already too late and wasting your time.
"if the dog tries to bite you while you're checking his mouth, he probably doesn't need CPR." i LOVE this guy!

Actually a lot of veterinarians and sites say to lay them on their right side so when you do compressions, it's closer to their heart.

Sir.... With due respects I want to know that Will we have this much time to check all these things...... I mean if we starts checking all these things we might run out of time to save the dog
To check only takes seconds. But, if you are unsure, start the CPR. You have nothing to lose.
Should the mouth of the dog or cat be held close when blowing air into the nose? Or, should our mouth also cover over the nose and mouth when blowing air ?
What do you do if you do not have an open airway? This video only details the how to with an open airway.
Hopefully you are never in that position. With an airway you can't "open", you need to do a tracheotomy. That is way beyond a short lesson on RUclips.
thank you!
what if the air channel is closed? I mean, what if, even if you blow you cant see the chest moving?
That would be bad news. Then the air can't get in and, without that, resuscitation will fail. If that occurs, you push on the chest (hard) to push the blockage out or you get a veterinarian to open the airway surgically.

I wish I saw this video before my dog Bailey died😖😩😫
What if they don’t have an open airway?
@DrJeffGrognet Too late
@DrJeffGrognet just kidding
I saw the thumbnail at my local vet
Thanks❤️
Question; when you breathe into the nose, do you have to do anything with the mouth? i know with humans it's all a continuous open system so if you don't close the nose, the air won't go into the lungs. Is there something different about a dog's anatomy that means you don't have to close the mouth? Thanks for the vid! Saw a video on FB about a lady with an unresponsive dog and I figured I'd better learn how to do this in case my Yorkie ever has issues.
You have to hold their mouth shut while blowing into the dogs nose so the air can get to their lungs and not out if their mouth!
how to do it on a sighthound then?
Because of how the chests are built in these breeds, you'd do it on their side (lateral recumbence) with cardiac compressions.
and also compress about 1/2 to a 1/3 of the width of the chest on that cardiac region? because it looks very fragile and small in whippets (i've 2 dogs)
It isn't fragile but quite pliable which helps.
I have a puggle how would I do CPR in her she have a push in face?
She has a nose (nostrils) and a mouth so you can do it.
so basically it's just like human cpr ?
Omg I got so scared for my pug because he swallowed a tomato and I didnt know what to do 😪
Did this video work? Is he ok? 🥺🥺
