I just listened to this concerto again after a few years. There are many interesting ideas, but that's what it sounds like: a collection of interesting ideas. Probably one good reason it didn't become/stay mainstream.
Bello concierto con un segundo movimiento espectacular. ¡Qué lástima que sus obras no se ejecuten en la actualidad y lleguen a ser conocidas por muchos aficionados a la música clásica!
The score is available now at IMSLP in piano reduction. According to the title page the concerto was composed for, or at least dedicated to Karl Davydov (Charles Davidoff in French). There are two Davydov cello concertos available here on YT.
Among romantic Russian composrs, A. Rubinstein is severely underrated. Alll the glory goes to Tchaïkovski, which is not always excellent, and some composers as Tanejev, Rubinstein, and some others, are ignored by music lovers. It is time to reverse that movement and to retrieve these beautiful composers.
FIRST TIME I HEAR IT, AND IT SEEMS VERY NICE. I RALLY NEVER HEARD HIS MUSIC EXCEPT ANGELICAL VISION SEEM ROMANTIC, BUT IS ALMOST NOY KNOWN...............WHT A SHAME....SEE AS MUSICIANS DO NOT PLAY HIS MUSICE EVER. RODOLFO VIQUEZ
What a tremendous concerto! If you didn't look at the name 'Anton Rubinstein' first you might almost assume it was written by a greater composer like Dvorak or Elgar with its rich strains of melancholy. The Fourth Piano Concerto is a masterpiece of volcanic energy, but there are deeper strains of feeling running through this concerto that I didn't suspect were in Rubinstein ...
The performers are on the title page of the video, but I added them to the description anyway. I believe that the soloist now goes by the name Werner Thomas-Mifune.
That's one of bests consertsfor cello in 19 th sentury... horrible the situation, than because ideology and musicoligy "hate" to Rubinstein music in Russian and Soviet tradition, great cello's concertos of composer, than more good maybe from a lot of popular concertos, was perfomanced from his death ONLY ONE TIME, thanks for Aronivitch

This should be considered a standard for cellists.. wish more big names would play it so it could finally have the recognition it deserves.
So should the 4 concertos of Karl Davydov, to whom Rubinstein dedicated this work.

A truly beautiful, very melodic, cello concerto. Rubinstein needs to be rediscovered.

Schönes Konzert! Sehr gut zum Anhören während man etwas lernt.
Een prachtig concert , genieten
Interesting to think that this is written 20 years BEFORE the Dvorak concerto.

It was written by a great composer, like Anton Rubenstein. Deserves much greater publicity
Iian Neill, Dvorak or Elgar are greater than Rubinstein? come on...)
@@SovietClassic There is no doubt that Anton Rubinstein was the second greatest pianist in history ... that is already a tremendous achievement!

Is there a recording of this Concerto No.2 ? There is a recording of the 1st Concerto , but I find none, yet, for No.2. TIA.

@@JAMESLEVEE Thanks ! I prefer # 2.
@@stevehaufe489 So do I. It's formally more interesting and melodically more nationalistic.
@@JAMESLEVEE Exactly.
When was this recorded ? Thank you.
The original recording was made in 1989 and released on Koch- Schwann.
Who's the cellist?

full of jewish angst, wonderful
Surprisingly folksy work, touches of Kamarinskaya in the finale. Better than the usual Anton fare. 🙂
