Michael Mann really stepped into another world when creating this film. The selection of the music is just a masterpiece.
No one has come even close to this movie. I'm at awe each time I watch it.
Succinctly well-said. Back in the 90s with no internet, took me forever to track down all the songs from various artists/albums. Finally when the official soundtrack CD released, it was still missing some.

if you didn't know, Michael Mann directed also the first seasons of Miami Vice, the first episode the pilot being my favourite one. it's like a whole movie of itself being one hour and 30 minutes but it has the Michael Mann fingerprints all over it, on the music shots, the surrealism of the whole scenery, it almost transports you in the character's skin.
I always thought that "Heat" was the masterpiece of Michael Mann, but last year I watched " Public Ennemies" for the second time (I had never seen it since its release in theaters), and woooow, now, I'm wondering if this film is not superior by some aspects... I mean, maybe not as HUGE (how could it beat the casting, cinematography of "Heat" :) but at times even more moving and fascinating... Anyway, LOVE Michael Mann since my teenage years, his vision is UNIQUE :)
@@StephenDedalus74 That's a bold statement, but you've got me curious to rewatch Public Enemies. I too have only scene it once in theaters and didn't like it. I was the same way with Miami Vice. Tried watching the unrated cut a few times and never could get into it. Finally watched the theatrical cut and I absolutely fell in love with it. Low key one of Michael Mann's best films.

Heat was actually Micheal Mann’s second attempt making the story. His first attempt bombed. It was a made for TV film titled LA Takedown.

@@Aman-nk5uq heavily disagree. There has been some absolutely fantastic art, comedy, film etc throughout the 2000's. It's harder to find and sift through the garbage but it's certainly here.

Man this is the first guitar solo that made me cry. The guitarist carved his soul into this song and it perfectly fits with the movie. What a masterpiece.

Better yet, support the artist. This was from Terje Rypdal's 1986 release "Blue" on EMC records. Whole album is a masterpiece and it's still in print.

All three are masterpiece films. I was lucky enough to see Heat in the theatre when it first came out and GF 3. GF 1 and GF2 I was able to seen in theaters when shown on special occasion. I never hear the sound of helicopter blades without thinking of the scene where Hanna is tracking Neil by air and then switches to car and Moby is playing.

One of the best soundtracks I have ever heard, the movie itself is a masterpiece, I would have loved them to escape at the end of the movie and start a new life in another place.
It’s loosely based on a real life story of Neil McCauley and a cop. The encounter at the coffee shop was also real.. am only quoting from the Wikipedia!

@@RShadow12 he did not. Heat was shot on 35mm negative format, I believe it was the Eastman EXR 500T. Nonetheless, it really does look from today.

I really consider myself very lucky to have shaken hands with someone who has seen Maestro live in real life...
I had the pleasure of speaking with Terje Rypdal when he and the band (Skywards) had dinner some years ago. Very nice and down to earth guy, we had lots of laughs, and (as I suspected) we share a lot of musical favourites (Beatles, Mahler, Weather Report).
