  • Can Paul McCartney Still Sing? My Review of His 2022 Got Back Tour!
    Hey everyone!
Everyone knows that Paul McCartney’s 2022 Got Back Tour ticket prices have been so high, that many of Paul’s fan can no longer afford to see him live. If they do many to obtain a ticket, it’s in the rafters, where Paul looks like an ant, and it’ll cost you $250.00 US dollars for the pleasure!
You’re so far away that the large screens provided aren’t much help, and it’s even hard to make out that Paul no longer colors his hair!
But all said and done how has his concerts been going? How are the performances? Is he still at 80 years old, the performer and singer we all remember? Is Paul McCartney still worth top dollar ticket prices?
All these questions and more are all answered in tonight’s video!!

Btw, the Give Back tour idea was so clever. What a great hook. 🤣🤣🤣
We both love and acknowledge him as the greatest. But it doesn’t place him above reproach as many die-hards think. These are constructive suggestions. Expect a little pushback as I received though.

Time waits for no man. 2 Beatles have passed so far in different ways and sooner or later all 4 Beatles will be gone from this Earth. I believe the soul goes on but that's another discussion for another day.........but when all four Beatles have passed all four of their legacies will have been cemented......I believe...... long long before the actuall official date and exact time of their passing. I liked your idea and suggestion of what Paul could do in your eyes to improve his show but Paul will do what he wants just like he always has done. Let it be Let it be oh Let it Be Let it Be. I am a classic rock guy, but think about the amount of money that gets taken out of the struggling band and musician's share in the last thirty years listening to the same show over and over again. The Stones, The Dead, Aerosmith, Kiss, all of this dough being funneled to folks who have been at the top most of their lives. I am sure it is another huge reason for the sorry state of music now. A lot of people see the dinosaur acts as the last vestige of a great time. I just think it is ridiculous 401K padding, as people their age are want to do, musicians or otherwise. Just saw him a couple of weeks ago tickets were $80 btw and I was not that far away. He absolutely rocked the entire place to its core, created a feeling of community and joy in a crowd of people that went from toddlers to seniors, and though he can’t haul off and scream like he could, he has more power than a lot of people much, much younger than him. He’s friggin adorable and brilliant. And the thing is, he has backing vocals from tens of thousands of people singing along with every word in a state of bliss. I went to the last show of his tour at Met Life in NJ, It was one of the best nights of my life and will remember it until the day I die. Something that people keep getting completely wrong is that going to see Paul at this point isn't to go and listen to how amazing his voice is. Obviously it is weathered, he's 80 freaking years old, you can't expect him to sound like he did 50 years ago. The point of paying upwards of $250 is to go experience Paul absolutely rocking the stadium, and everyone singing along as one. You go and pay to be in the same building as a rock God and to hear and witness him play some of the most legendary songs and tracks of all time. I am sick of people criticizing his voice and questioning if it is worth paying the money. That just isn't the point. I, along with many other people will pay as much as it takes to see Paul McCartney in person no matter the condition of his singing voice. He is one of the best performers of all time, and still is to this day. That is why you pay the money to go see him.

When McCartney was on tour in 2011 I made it a point to go to that show for precisely the reason that he is talking about. For that show McCartney's voice was still great and I was so glad to be there and hear it. I can't remember exactly but I think his next tour was 3 years later and what is being talked about here was already showing. So many high notes that he had still sung in 2011 we're now maybe not necessarily completely out of his reach but he just could not do it with authority at all anymore. So what this man is saying is that rather than try to duplicate what his voice did in its 20s and 30s McCartney should rethink this. As this man says McCartney could take all of his most challenging songs vocally out of the tour and substitute with songs that he has recorded in the past 15 years. McCartney singing the songs of his sixties and seventies recording career is still very doable. And yes he is not hurting for money so why not do the smaller venues.

You know I’m a fan of McCartney and of course the Beatles, but if I can be honest for a moment, I stopped listening to McCartney’s output once I was able to preview all albums since Memory Almost Full. “Why is that Tudor” you may ask? The simple answer is that just like his live performances, his studio albums IMHO also suffer from poor vocals. Rarr I hear the devote fans roaring. But I just can’t put myself through the pain and anguish! Right I’m off to listen to Beware My Love where a McCartney of old let’s the vocal chords really rip.

The trouble is everyone is either in awe, or stands to massively gain by him continuing to tour. Who around him is really gonna have the nerve to tell him he can't always sing well enough anymore? The vocal decline has been evident for some years now, it's totally understandable, he never stops, he's still only human. Once the croaks and wobbly long vibrato first started appearing I felt conflicted and uncomfortable hearing it. You can be somewhat forgiving if he's not always on par during a huge world tour, but when it was so noticeable even on his studio albums, and didn't appear to have been corrected, I knew my hero was no longer holding himself to the highest standards we all expect from him. Voices change with age, I accept that, but it still has to be musical, and it was no longer a pleasant experience to hear. When music is his life, and in all other aspects he appears very healthy considering his age, I think he's unlikely to wind down. Maybe videos like this will reach him and it'll make him reassess things, if enough is clearly coming from a place of love from lifelong fans. As Paul has always wanted to please and deliver for his public your suggestions might just become reality, and he could surprise us all once again.

Believe me- NO ONE will mind. You love "Johnny"? Play more off his dominant Beatle numbers. She Loves You, I want To Hold Your Hand, Dr. Robert, The Word, And Your Bird Can Sing, Hey Bulldog

I don’t think we will see much change. He has millions who want to see him, and most fans want the hits and he knows this.
I completely agree that the hardcore fans want to hear all the deep cuts live in smaller venues, but if that happened I doubt many us would be able to get a ticket as so many would apply. I’m not sure at this stage that he is willing to put in all that rehearsal work for a modest pay off.
I’d particularly love to hear stuff from the 1980s that he never plays.

It’s great to get your unfiltered take on this subject. All sharp insights as always. As you said, he does look amazing now that he’s re-embraced the gray. The catalog is peerless and the man will always be the masterful entertainer he was born to be. But there is no disguising the significant loss of vocal power and at some point it only cheats your audience and damages your legacy. Expect the upcoming pro-shot Glastonbury show to fully expose that for posterity.
Thanks so much for the plug. I’ve written my next McCartney video and should be filming it soon. I think you will like it. Also doing some homework for our eventual collaboration. As always, great, no-bull work here. Take care!

Great idea Michael👍🏻 I’d love to see Paul play those songs throughout his career that weren’t hits. And yea, smaller venues connect the artist with the audience. I’ve always felt it’s harder to play in front of 10 people than 1000, mostly because of the closeness but, it makes me perform better. I think it’s because shadows become faces if that makes sense.

I’m 18 and I grew up listening to The Beatles and Paul’s music. I kid you not when I say they’re my favorite band in the world. He and the others inspired me to pick up a guitar, bass, and drums. I have all their records, yada yada yada.
I can see complaints from people saying he’s getting to old and he isn’t what he used to be. But I literally could not (respectably) give a shit. I got to actually see my hero in person and that’s all that matters to me. Even if he’s 80.

I have a question? Have you been to any of the concerts on this Got Back Tour? I agree, that his voice is not what it use to be, when you listen to any of the videos from the concert you can hear the weaknesses in his voice. But let me tell you, I went to the Orlando concert with my brother and I warned him that his voice is not what it use to be. But we decided that this would probably be the last time to see him in concert, and just the fact that it was Paul McCartney of the Beatles it was worth going. So the concert begins, we are into the 3rd song and my brother who goes to many concerts and is a musician himself, say to me “he sounds good”. For some reason when you are there live you don’t catch the mishaps in his voice.
I have read many many reviews of people who have gone to one of his concerts and all have said what a great show it was, that it was one of the Best concerts they have been to. My brother also at the end of the concert said it was the best concert he has every been to.
So, it’s your choice if you don’t want to go, but anybody that went, loved it.
Also, concerning the prices of the tickets, they are expensive, but I checked a few times after I got my tickets, and you could get tickets up in the rafters from $30 and up, depending where the seats are, but there are much cheaper tickets.
Sorry, but I am a major Paul McCartney fan, and I am very defensive when people criticize him. Believe me, I was very surprised that we couldn’t really detect too much weakness in his voice, when you are there live, I was very Conscience of it, and was listening to see if I could notice anything. Not sure why he sounds worse in the videos, or why he sounds better being there live. But it was worth every penny.

You are 100% spot on. I was at the show in L.A. I took my nephew as his birthday was the same weekend. I'd seen Paul at his final show at Dodger Stadium three years ago. I had no idea what to expect then. I just love him so much I decided to go despite negativity regarding his voice. Well, I would have kicked myself if I hadn't gone because pardon the pun, he knocked it out of the park! I couldn't believe he sounded so good. He'd just turned 77. He also brought Ringo and Joe Walsh out at the end. Flash forward to 2022. Again, I was excited to see him again and I was "ready" for the chance his vocals might not hold up. Just 2 songs in, my nephew leaned over and said, "This is REALLY good." The point is, as you have correctly stated, listening on RUclips videos and such does not do him justice. One has to be in attendance to get the full throttle of the experience. Something about these videos does not translate well to the listener.
My biggest gripe is I don't care for Stadium shows. I don't like to have to rely on screens. My seats were ok, but I still had to rely on the screens as I'm sure a lot of people did. And yes, the prices do suck. Especially paying money to watch him on a big screen. Still having said that, you cannot beat the thrill of seeing Paul live. I've seen him with Wings in 1976 and 1989. Of course he was in his heyday and both shows were spectacular. I also saw him in 2007 at a "secret" show in Hollywood to promote Memory Almost Full. He was 65 and still magnificent. Then in 2019 and 2022. I've been fortunate to see him in all incantations. So in sum, as long as Paul is out there and wants to perform, I say go for it. That day will surely come when he won't be able to do it anymore or he will have left the building.

Ok I just saw him at Fenway Park in Boston, so I’ll give my review the show was amazing , and I was looking to pick him apart a wee bit , on this particular night it felt more like a Wings Tour with some Beatle songs thrown in which I loved because it was a little different. His voice sounded great, his guitar playing on Purple Haze was great, his connection and banter with audience was genuine and entertaining . The band is as good as always, and I know Brian Ray who is also a fine person he Rusty Anderson , Abe Laboriel and Wix Wickens are a tight band and play effortlessly together,as I said I went into the concert expecting less but I got more, what I wanted to really emphasize was as I looked around at the crowd , I saw that it was it was all ages from 6 year olds to ninety year olds, all ethnicities , cultures and socio economic backgrounds, and everyone was smiling and having a great time, and it made me thankful that Paul Mcartney was still touring and has brought so much music and beauty into the world, for two and a half hours this country’s and the worlds problems were left outside that ballpark and everyone there was in the same happy musical place the show was magical , but ticket prices are ridiculous and gouging people,I was told by an insider each shows setup is $l million, don’t know how true that is but it is what is

There's a few videos on RUclips that explore Paul's decaying voice. One that covers the song Live And Let Die really exposes how in the last 10 years and in particular last 5 years Paul struggles to sing this song. Looking at how it's performed in 2022 live Paul has compensated his bad vocals with a massive laser show and endless round of stage pyro. He's learned from a band like Kiss the art of distraction. The big thing was the almost painful warble in his voice. It was a stellar show and his energy was crazy. He even ran around the stage afterwards carrying either a British or American flag, I can't quite remember which one he had. However, the vocals were sad enough at times that I would not go to see him again at any price, unless he took your advice and decided to tour his recent material.

I agree with many of your points. A theater tour of lesser-heard material would showcase Paul - "the artist" - in a way that these mass stadium shows cannot. Would elevate him even further. One thing you're missing, though, is that Paul is one of the few rockers not lowering keys and using autotune. So the vocals are a stretch, but the MUSIC still rocks. I respect Paul for that, even though it's become borderline unlistenable. I think Paul likes the huge venues and mass spectacle, so it's unlikely he'll change.

I wa 6 years old when I saw the Beatles on Sullivan in '64. It took till 2009 to see McCartney live at the Hollywood Bowl. Took my wife, son and daughter. Tix $65 each. My expectations were very high for the performance, yet Paul exceeded them. Saw him in San Diego in 2015. Tix $75. Took my sister plus two nieces. Paul's voice was noticeably lower in quality but it was still a great show - and my guests were very happy and appreciative. Early this year i saw there was upcoming San Diego concert. This time the lowest price was about $250. I wouldn't pay that, even though "I can afford it ". Not worth it to me. I think about the dedicated fan who realllly wants to go but can't afford it. It's sad that a billionaire artist doesn't care about them, even if HE IS THE GOAT, which he is.

    1. Musicians/artists should never retire. They stop when they feel like it.
    2. Scale down? Yes. It's been fan demanded since the early 2000s for him to just do small theaters. And I love your idea of films being released with "rare" performances.
    3. Nothing will change unless he needs to change his routine. But with him still selling, there is no need.

Three very awesome points here, Paul!
I just think he should consider option #4!
      4. Change and have one last great autum career that will be written about in history books!
It could be his fourth incarnation of a career!😉

If there are still enough people to sell out stadiums, why should he scale down? That means thousands wouldn't get a chance to him, possibly ever.

The Stones charge more for a 2 hr set with 19 songs all of which we have heard a million times before.
An 80 yr old living legend, a music ICON, playing a 40 song ,3 hour set is worth all the money. Enjoy him while he still here.

I wonder if the reason the tickets are priced so high is because of massive insurance taken out on the tour. As to Paul's voice, on the concluding concert of the tour at Glastonbury, his voice was pretty good. Should his voice decline, he could always have guest vocalists singing on some of the songs, both live and on record. It will not affect his talent as a composer. His performance at Glastonbury which I saw on T.V. made me immensely proud of him and proud to be a Beatles fan. As to what the future holds, I just want Sir Paul and his family to be happy.

No, he should not retire. BTW your comments are all over the map: agreeing that he puts on a good show that just needs a set list tweak in one comment, and then agreeing that he needs to hang it up/retire in another comment.

Hey Michael, I agree with you that there are some songs that Paul probably should retire and bring out some newer stuff that he "can" sing. And you're right about ticket prices being way to high. I got to see him once back in 1990 at ASU. Nose bleed section, but he sounded great.

I saw Paul in Sioux Falls, SD several years ago, two or three days before Prince was found dead. You are spot on. The area was packed, I had okay seats and the prices were high. Paul and his band played exquisitely but even then, Paul’s vocal was a disappointment, as much as I hated to admit it. But I can at least say I saw him live. The ‘’Live and Let Die’’ cannons were a trip. Crazy loud….and I knew it was coming. I wondered if someone would eventually have a heart attack during his tour, because of those explosions.

Saw McCartney in 1989 on an oversold stadium tour for $10.00. You've seen him once, you have seen him. Great show, no need to see it again.

I feel Paul should continue to play live if that is what he wants to do. If the fans still come or not is irrelevant. Yes his voice is much weaker but playing keeps him young and perhaps alive.

I haven't had the good fortune to see sir Paul and you know what a big Beatles fan I am. I can't afford the tickets these day's, because like a vintage wine you can't put a price on it. As long as he keeps coming back, the price will go up.

If you go to a Paul show you will notice the crowd goes to sleep when he plays his 21st century music. Paul commented on this when I saw him and said well I'm going to play some anyway. I too would also prefer to hear more 21st century Paul music, but most people would be disappointed. They want the classics.

He apparently still has the stamina to tour and his musicianship is without question, but his voice has transitioned into the wavery old man voice which in my mind reduces him to a novelty act and sentimental nostalgia ... if he wants to record new music until he dies more power to him, but tour? Naw...
As far as why playing few tunes from the last few albums on tour? Because few people in the audience want it to hear it. Face it, he's a Legacy Act, the audience is primarily Boomers who want some nostalgia from The Good Ol' Days (I'm one)... At this stage in his career it's mostly nostalgia...

As far as I’m concerned, regardless of age, if a performer is unable to deliver the goods and are charging for tickets, it’s time to step away OR like Michael said, change your set list to do the songs you can still do at a high level. If, you’re not delivering the hits people will be highly disappointed.
