To everyone who wants to make this a ringtone, *DON'T.* Not only will you cause panic for no reason should your phone go off, but Japan also has a VERY strict law about playing this sound in public if it isn't used for emergencies only.

      Me too. Even my pets.
In 2013 I was in Vietnam, and Vietnamese TV program was on in the living room. I was in the kitchen when suddenly both my pets came RUNNING towards me. One from the sofa in the living room, my dog, and one from the other side of the apartment, my cat. The collided together, then both came to me, my dog jumping on my leg to be picked up, and my cat jumped on my shoulder. I was so surprised.
I had been cooking and had earphones in my ears because I was listening to an audiobook on my iPod.
When I took out the earphones I heard the sound!!! Same as NHK earthquake’s warning.
It was from the Vietnamese TV program.
During the time of earthquakes in 2011, I grabbed my pets and we went out in the terrace with emergency bag and pet carry bags. Hundreds and hundreds of times. I did this because I was afraid that would be stuck inside if the building collapsed.
First I would immediately run and open all balcony doors, then grab my pets, emergency bag, and pet bag, and escape to the terrace.
Two years later, in another country, my pets knew that sound.
I started shaking and crying and couldn’t stop.
After that my dog stayed by me all the time, and my cat hid under the bed for days and wouldn’t come out.

i actually put this as my ringtone when I was younger (14) in 2012, and I live in America, so I figured no one could freak out since most Americans have never heard it. I was walking down the street, and my phone rang. this oldish woman who I guess was from japan, started screaming and freaking out. I asked her what was wrong, and I couldn't understand what she was screaming about, but one word I recognized was jishin. I was planning on going to japan, so I started learning Japanese emergency words, like help, earthquake, etc. then I felt like an asshole and came up with an excuse to why my phones ringtone was that. damn I was dumb as hell.
