I was amused in a Tokya Lens video, when he was in this half-abandoned town in the middle of nowhere, there was a clean and fully stocked running vending machine there :D

Interesting, somehow the idea of breaking them almost never exists in Japan I think.

There are so many aspects to be fascinated by. First, they're literally EVERYWHERE. When my friend and I were moving from one hotel in Shibuya to another Shinjuku, because I misread Google Maps we had to walk 650m from the bus stop to the second hotel. It was really hot that day and we were dragging our luggage around but every block there was a vending machine for us to stop and get something cold and refreshing to drink. Second, the product selection. Various different kinds of waters, sodas, juices, etc. Third, the ability to pay with IC cards. I became so reliant on using my SUICA to pay just about everywhere; taking the bus or train to wherever we had to go, in shops and in conbinis, and at vending machines.

hahaha sounds like you became a good fan of them!
If you own a property to install a vending machine, it can actually be a somewhat source of income, that is another reason why there are so many.
