Hey Jason, the separable phrasal verb example has a problem, think about the meaning of : "Turn on authoritarians!" and "Turn authoritarians on!" it's easier to see 2 possible meanings, as Paul Barton points out below "turn on the power of choice" is confusing as it is ambiguous. I realise this glitch with "to turn on .." & "to turn .. on" is probably unwanted, but it's not an unusual usage :)
Dear Christian, Thank you so much for your devotion in English teaching. I have really gained a lot of understanding in this language from your teaching. I really love your way, you have revealed the psychology of the languague, Engiish. Best regards,
I really just love your teaching! Please could you explain this : Why a book was named "Me and You" ; insteaf of "I and you"??? When , for example, a person is asked about who is going to do stg, they answered :"Me".. And not " I" ,???? Is it correct grammar? I am from Brazil, and as you probably know, like Spanish, using the pronouns these way sounds very childish. Thanks teacher God bless you and your family always!
You are definitely THE BEST teacher in the world, Christian! I get amazed every time I watch one of your videos, specially when you demystify the language and the learning process. You deeply inspire me. Thank you so much for your awesome lessons!
19:07 - This is the first time I have ever come across your channel (possibly because I am a native English speaker so why would RUclips recommend it to me... it wouldn't), but at 19:07 this is one of the best definitions of WHAT you are trying to practise in order to improve in a language that I have ever heard: "You need to have automatic control of the grammar structures that you can then put vocabulary in." From one Aussie to another: That's bloody brilliant mate. Edit: 23:00 - "coffee, beer, netflix". HAHAHA.
You are doing a great job man! As a teacher of English here in south Brazil for decades I can tell you are good man! I taught my son son all English I could and 3 years ago he went to Dublin to improve his English, and currently he is still there doing good, he´s attending CCT College (business) , and he got in contact with the Irish style English, tha´s really awesome. being in contact w/ the locals speaking like them gave him upper skills in English, I am a very proud father, practice makes perfect used to say my teachers from the past when I starting learning English in 1983 at College. In fact, I started getting in contact w/English when I watched on tv man landing on the moon back there on the '70s when I was a child, then in the very moment I decided I would learn that language guys were talking on the screen... I had success from that day on (ps: there were no mobiles, googles, and all this very importat tools everyone has gotten nowadays). I started learning by myself, then when I was 18 yo I entered College to give my English a definitive go. I have been watching your videos which are superb man. What a great masterpiece! Congrats man. I have spoken w/my son on whatsapp videos and he´s speaking so fluently I cant believe! Wow... You stated in this 19.Nov video that a Child has no other chance than learning a native language just because it is a matter of "survival", on the contrary, Adults dont have the same feeling which makes much more difficult for them to learn, definitely, I agree w/ you my friend, adding anotehr fact: if this same adult is sent to a distant land, as my son went, this same adult will need to learn that local language "as a matter of survival", this happened to my son, despite the fact he had learned for year and even reached a good English before travelling to Dublin, but on the island he had to make it happen by practicing on a daily basis. He´s been making it happen!. Learning a language as we know is a continuous process. Let´s keep practicing man! Keep up the oustanding work you have been offering us your subscribers!
Thank you, Christian! You're a really good English teacher because you love your business, I think so.I'm always enjoying your lessons and waiting for each new one without any patience. Thanks for that!
Everytime I got depressed because my English level, I come here and just start to listen to Christian and then I feel better, after watching your videos Chris, I feel more capable to speak in a speech lol I feel with super powers. I would like to know you in the future. You're a person who bother it.
This video is more a lecture than a class and full of essential data on the English language but having the command of it comes from practicing a word thousand times.
Hi Christian. This class is a real breakthrough and Acts as a turning point in my life. I don’t know how to put words into sentence to thank you, but I think the only way to express my gratitude is to share it with my classmates and let them know that there is a resourceful and educated teacher who is able to say as many right things as we need to know. Simply. Thank you for your help
In my opinion, teachers should definitely change the way they teach English to children, here in Italy at least. I've been learning more in the last 12 months by watching RUclips videos than in my whole life, and I have always been studying a lot. Thank you Christian 👏👏👏
Great! Actually your teaching is very advanced, psychological and kind of descriptive with clear and lots of explanation. I really like it! But why not so popular to gain lots of views? Because your teaching is kind of understanding rather than remembering or acquisition for what they are seeing with their eyes (a way of teaching low levels). But, for me, I love this kind of psychological explanation because I can acquire your words and sentences (in chunks), and the way of speaking. Thanks a lot for your devotion of time!
You're the best teacher ever! You don't have millions of subscribers only because you and your ideas are way too sophisticated to be 'pop', if you know what I mean! Keep up the good work! Thanks a lot!
Great job 👍 Interesting, funny and useful. I like the way you answer questions and that you go into depth to explain something based on different categories like history, psychology, etc. Short questions, but compelling answers. I like it 🙂
Your audios are really enjoyable!! You don't stay at the surface. Now I realize that I'm achieving tha capacity of understand a meaningful and interesting conversation. Thanks a lot!
I don´t have words to describe how is important for us your work, always high quality information, Thanks alot for sharing your perceptions and knowledge about learning a language.
just discovered your channel today. I like that you always have an example and proof from the study/research/book for each idea that you share with us. Keep up! a bit input: talking faster would be better :)
Great lesson and absolutely incredible teacher.👍👍👍Thanks a lot. Some your thoughts were a kind of revelation for me. I am quite agree with the myth of imposing the preposition at the end of the sentence. Your lessons are not only helpful, they are meaningful and profound. Really enjoy your videos. With you luck with your channel.
Brilliant!!!!! 👏👏👏👏👏 Thank you Christian, I think I finally understood the difference between going to and will😊And I loved your explanation about the psychology behind the construction of a sentence. Please I’d love to watch more videos on that subject. Have a nice week!
When I watch your videos I always take notes of your sentences, like "The past ist just as imagination as the future" or "Are you willing to put in the time necessary?" And these help me a lot. Thank you
Dear Christian, thank you for your stimulating videos. You see, now English is used by a lot of non native people. Among them just a few are / want / need to be proficient. I am one of those. I managed to get an advanced level but I am not proficient. It was a time when I asked myself the question: go on working to become proficient or not ? As I didn't want to become a professional of the language, and as I realised that such an achievement would need a lot of work, I decided that it was enough. I can read books, even if I don't understand a little percentage of words, I can write, not as well as natives of course, I can express myself and sell my products, and understand speech, except when natives speak among themselves. That is not so bad and I am rather proud of myself. So I decided to put my energy on learning Spanish and German, at snail's pace. More rewarding. I say that because on RUclips teachers seem to think that people want to become fluent, as if they needed to get 9 band at the IELTS. I think it's a mistake. Most of people would be happy enough to get grade 7 ! Think they have other things to do than to study English ! Medicine, chemistry, maths, business, are certainly more important for a lot of people. Another point. These phrasal verbs. They work only if you get used to them. I can use some of them, but others are really difficult to understand. If I try to use verbs of this latter category, I can make mistakes with not even nice consequences. Also I have to consider that the people I speak to, non natives of course, may have the same difficulty. That is why I feel safier to avoid such verbs as soon as their meaning isn't obvious. I meet the same kind of problem with the choice of a saxon or a latin word. I remember that some authority, I don't remember his name gave the advice to choose saxon short words. I understand. For natives, the taste of Saxon is better than the taste of Latin. Of course. But sometimes these pure Saxon words are difficult to understand. See the word 'to swoop '. What on earth can it mean ? If I try to guess, I come to 'to clean the ground', or maybe 'to hover' or 'to bend'. I have no idea. So, English is widespread as a communication language, but also are Latin and Greek through the roots of an enormous quantity of international vocabulary. So I think I would be much better understood if I say something like 'immediately destroyed ' (latin) than 'swwooped' (saxon). (I choosed 'swoop' at random). Maybe there is a kind of a gap between native English and non native English. I'm not quite sure of my analysis and I would like to know your opinion, if you want. Have a good day.
23:14 Adults are busy with other things :-D Luckily I'm not busy either with beer or coffee or netflix. So I learnt English in self teaching in just one year and now I'm able to read books in English :-) Thank you and happy New Year !
Interesting. When my students prepare for an exam, they have to go by the rulebook, or else! I'm always telling them that's not how it really works, but it looks like I'm just covering for my "mistakes", especially with going to and will.

I like grammar books, I think they can be a short cut, the trick is not to get to hung up about it. The aim should be to feel the language, this can only happen by listening, noticing and speaking, It's never going to come from a book. I watched this video where they interviewed a bunch of Korean people who learned to speak Spanish, they were asked what the hardest thing to learn was, they all said: the subjunctive! Funny thing is, in the comment section (all native Spanish speakers presumably) no one knew what the subjunctive was lol.
Deeply appreciated for your all videos!I agree with that there is no correlation between the number of the words you know and your fluency .l cant speak quite well Russian language after having lived more than 3 years and also l have taken many grammar classes l know too many words though but my 5 year old kid speaks much more fluently than l do ! we are just too adult to spend a lot of time with the language and adapt the culture l guess:)) My daughter just enjoys the time without any concerns and she uses the language and lives it feels it !! keep up with wonderful job Christian!
Very useful video, and links under the video. I recently saw your videos and I liked it. Thanks. I have one question, rather a small problem. So, I can’t write grammatically. I read, watch a video, listen to a speech, talk, but when I need to write, I absolutely do not remember all the letters in the word that I write. Is there any way to improve this? In my native language, Russian, I just read a lot and remember the words visually or I can spell them.
I am 60 and trying learn English :) My problem is I know only English good as I hear you. When I try understand others my English Has gone :) Thank you for your lessons. Regards from Poland.
Hi Christian!! First of all, I love your videos!!! I've always wanted to know the rules for dividing words at the end of a written line. I know it is different from the Spanish way, but it is difficult to find explanations in an English grammar book. Could you please answer that in your next grammar questions video? Greetings from Argentina!
I adore your videos! Thank you so much! When you have time, could you please go over such a topic as not observing the sequence of tenses rule in a colloquial speach? Like, "John told me he bought a mew car recently" instead of "had bougt"
hello Christian! All course books would have the so called verb patterns, and would say with some verbs we should use gerunds with others infinitive with "to". (As I understand) The function of gerund is to describe process and the function of infinitive is to describe purpose, it makes sense with certain verbs, for example if I say "I enjoy swimming" there is no purpose to swim in my sentence and I'm just saying that I like the activity of swimming, and if I say "I want to sleep" there is some purpose to sleep, actually I'm talking about action that I want to do in the future like if I say "I'm going to sleep" which also uses infinitive of purpose for the action to happen in the future, but what about verbs like "suggest", why books will say to use gerund after "suggest" like "I suggested taking taxi", why not "I suggested to take taxi" since "to take taxi" certainly expresses the purpose, I'm not native speaker, so it might be that I do not clearly understand the meaning of word suggest, but to me both "suggest doing" and "suggest to do" sound OK. Could you tell us what you think about it?
22:45 "...As an adult You don't have the same need to learn a second language!" Well, it depends on circumstances, Christian. My grandpa, for instance, was "nicely" brought to work in Germany during WWII and, believe me, He had a urgent need to learn the language, He learned it the hard way... Keep Up the Good Job and Cheers from Italy.
I have been greatly influenced by your explanation about FLUENCY of a language. This widened my perception of the concept. I wish, also, to add my opinion that I am sure you would get grammatical as well as structural problems throughout the life of the English language for the simple and logical reason that it is A LIVING LANGUAGE, so therefore the language would all the characteristics of a living thing!!
As regards feeling the need for using a language, I think that it was that happened to me. I started 3 years ago studying for being an English teacher, having cero prior studies on the language. Although I was 30 years old, I learned a lot of English; even faster than the younger ones in the classes. I think it was, to a great extent, for feeling the obligation to use the language in order to pass the courses. In college, we not only study grammar and other aspects of the language but also we study subjects such as History, Didactics, Phonetics and Phonology, literature, and so on in English. So, we have to use a lot the language in our daily college life. Then, I strongly agree with you Christian when you say that the need for communication, and how relevant it is for you what you're studying are the keys to learn a language.
@@Tony32 "to be an English teacher" , thanks so much for correcting me! It's always good to know the more natural and common way to say things ;-) Yeah! I think that using the language is the only way to achieve great result , and that was what permeated me to learn a lot in a few years.
"Turn on the power of choice" is ambiguous. It may mean "enable the ..." or "deviate at or depending on the value of the..." Putting the "on" at the end disamibuates.
Excellent point, well spotted! I didn't like using "the power of choice" as it obfuscates :) A difference is even clearer to see, if one says "Turn on authoritarians!" and "Turn authoritarians on!" :) [ For English students, the first is appealing for restistance, whereas the second suggests titilating base instincts. ] Of course this shows the joy of phrasal verbs, but I found "turn on the power of choice" to be confusing without being sure why.
1:14 - Can you end a sentence with a preposition?
5:08 - Can you use phrasal verbs in formal English?
10:21 - When to separate phrasal verbs
13:41 - When to use 'will' or 'going to' to talk about the future
17:44 - How much vocabulary do you need for fluency?
20:10 - When should you teach your child English?
Hey Jason, the separable phrasal verb example has a problem, think about the meaning of : "Turn on authoritarians!" and "Turn authoritarians on!" it's easier to see 2 possible meanings, as Paul Barton points out below "turn on the power of choice" is confusing as it is ambiguous. Churchill said:"Ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put!". True. G'day Christian from Mascot, Sydney town.
12:48 paramount point on phrasal verbs ;)
Hi Christian!! First of all, I love your videos!!! I've always wanted to know the rules for dividing words at the end of a written line. I know it is different from the Spanish way, but it is difficult to find explanations in an English grammar book. Could you please answer that in your next grammar questions video? Greetings from Argentina!
Great video. thank you teacher.
Great, thanks!
Great - as always !!
Amazing , It's realy amazing and beautiful. Thank you!
Gosto do seu modo de falar muito bom para praticar e imitar as palavras que você fala obrigado professor 😍😍😎
Hello! amazing video! could you just tell where I can find Joshua Paul's book? thank you so much :)
You make people think about the way they communicate for.
I adore your videos! Thank you so much!
When you have time, could you please go over such a topic as not observing the sequence of tenses rule in a colloquial speach? Like, "John told me he bought a mew car recently" instead of "had bougt"
hi Christian, thank you for you tips, i like your vidéo.Didier from North of France
Nice explanation of using 'be going to' for predictions. But present continuous???
I loved the way about you learn English...
hello Christian!
Informative and interesting.
Excellent..
I love your channel
We say “On what you sit?" in our language and feel great without preposition at the end of the sentense. :)
"Caffe, beer, Netflix" hahaha
Don't say "studying for being an English teacher"
Say: "studying to be an English teacher"
What you've accomplished in three years is very impressive.
@@Tony32 "to be an English teacher" , thanks so much for correcting me! It's always good to know the more natural and common way to say things ;-)
Yeah!
I didn't like using "the power of choice" as it obfuscates :)
A difference is even clearer to see, if one says "Turn on authoritarians!" and "Turn authoritarians on!" :)
[ For English students, the first is appealing for restistance, whereas the second suggests titilating base instincts. ]
Of course this shows the joy of phrasal verbs, but I found "turn on the power of choice" to be confusing without being sure why.
thank you for the video
