- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- This is a very detailed video on how to perform a fuel tank tuck on all Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ. I'll show you all the differences from the early 99-01 and the late models 02-04 and will cover different ways to perform this tuck.
This is also a great video on how to remove the bumper cover and how to lower the gas tank.

You are a tremendous resource for the WJ. Thank you Martin
Thank you Max I appreciate that.
can i offer you a job at jeep--go at the head office and teach the engineers how the real world likes our cars built simple and common sense god bless you friend
Thank you, Jim, greatly appreciated!
Ill tell you what if you do a fuel filter change at a 100,000 miles and other simple preventive maintenance jobs. You should never have to do this.
Martin your putting these Chrysler Engineers to Shame. So to give you a place for a Spare Tire they Drop the Fuel Tank to a location that looks about as unsafe as you can get. Chrysler should have Tucked the Tank and gave a small donut mounted like they did in the 2000 XJ. Or do what they do now Delete the Spare Tire. All they did was leave themselves open to some serious Law Suits. Then the access Door to get at the Fuel Pump is something all Auto Makers should be doing. What a Nightmare Job just to replace the Fuel Pump.
thank you, Charles, yes they should have known and probably did. Many auto makers now have the access panel under the back seat.
Or do wat i did and get a spare tire carrier on the lift gate and do the tuck
GREAT my friend. You are unique. ALWAYS a real pleasure to follow you. Hello from Italy.
Thank you very much!
If you make more floor plates w access cover i want one 💯
Me too!
I would buy one too
Finally! An awesome detailed video on how to do this. This is the next project for me on my WJ. Thanks! Looking forward to part 2.
Glad it was helpful!
BUEN TRABAJO 👍 SALUDOS 🇲🇽
Muy buena explicación. Lo felicito desde Venezuela.
Thank you I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
Thanks for watching. 😊
Martin, your a great mechanic. Honestly, pretty sure your an engineer. Keep it up.
Wow, thanks
You're great craftsman. Thanks for doing an awesome detailed video of the gas tank tuck.
Thank you, glad you liked it.😊
My tank skid plate has a fat dent from dropping onto a rock😂
sounds like it saved the fuel tank
Good video, I m planning to remove the fuel tank, thank you very much for the way to do it
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful. Thank you for watching.
Yes, an engineer. I asked a lot of mechanics on RUclips to help me solve the faults in my 2004 Grand Cherokee.
Which my brother gave me from the United States of America.
In fact, I told him at the beginning not to buy me a jeep
The reason is that it is a car that is not widespread with us, and its agent demands very high prices in the price of spare parts and does not provide them completely, and the company is a Jeep company, a company that does not care about the future of its cars in our country, the Republic of Yemen, located south of Saudi Arabia.
What is important, my brother bought it, and when I saw it, it was a beautiful car, we customs it and took it out of the enamel at the end of 2012, and when my brother drove by it, he was amazed that it was very slow and heavy to walk and said its money was fast. I took the car from it and used it to this day.
I discovered that it had faults as a result of faults and that it was considered a higher conversation, as I had Japanese cars that had no computers or sensors, and I could not understand them and I thought that I would overcome their faults by finding alternatives to their parts, but I knew the work of computers and sensors and their connection to each other makes it very difficult to compose alternative parts
I will continue ..
One of the most important faults is its fuel dispensing in a very large way, in 100 kilometers it spends 20 liters
The second malfunction was the gasoline vapor, which was causing the gasoline odor to spread inside the cabin
Other holidays are very slow torque
The third malfunction turns off its engine for a few seconds while it is walking
Just seconds.
The fourth malfunction is the smuggling of hot gases from the engine to the radiator, as a result of the fans stopping, so the engine overheated badly before
The important thing is now, I want to know how to make the parts of the evaporation system generously, how I can discover the faults in it and how to install them correctly.
The truth is that the company is trivial in many matters
For example, when the fans have stopped, there is no substitute for their work. If you are not careful, do not realize that the fans have stopped until the head of the engine has been struck.
Gasoline vapor has many confusing parts and is tight for maintenance
Likewise, the gasoline pump needs to be removed from the tank
Fuel filtering is complicated and not the same as other cars, so it is not available or available and is very expensive.
There are no benzene pellets
The plexus and its strings do not dissolve easily
The raw materials for the pipes inside the engine are very poor
Harden and crack.
The car has plastic bumpers and there are no towing hooks to drag anything
The headlights are difficult to weigh, and the color of the glass becomes opaque
There are a lot of ridiculous things these companies do not want their cars to spread so they leave matters to their greedy agent.
Imagine the price of headlamps or headlights and taillights sells them for 1150 dollars, while in America they are all for 250 dollars
Many talk, thank you for your patience
With you was Muhammad Ahmad Al-Danoun from YemenImportant faults followed.
Thanks for these videos, been planning on doing this to mine for awhile. Replaced the completely rotted out skid plate before winter because I'm sure it wouldn't last another. Will tuck the tank this summer. You are a brave man dealing with that weight yourself, I think I'll pay with some Buds for a second set of hands. Great video as always!
You're very welcome. I hope it goes well for you. I recommend measuring several times before any cutting. Just take your time. I'm glad you found it helpful 👍
Excellent video! im in the process of doing the same except my skid plate was toast so I got one of Affordable off-road skid plates for a 4" tuck (its built like a tank) ill be using your idea for fuel pump access and ill ribb my cover plate as well.
thank you for watching!
I have a 2002 and when I read about this after I got my Jeep I was really disappointed how Jeep handled this whole situation. Their only fix was to add a tow hitch after market. And I don't see how that adds much protection. If you can do this, my question is why didn't Jeep recall these years and fix it? I know, "money" - but, what about Jeeps' integrity? Outside of this issue, I absolutely love my Laredo. Not the gas mileage though. LOL!
Great detailed Video, now its time to get to cutting on my WJ! 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you. i'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
Good luck with your build.😊👍
Thanks! I might have more issues with my WJ as I live north! Lots of rusty rigs!
Fuck bro , you are so so so smart , your brain is really awesome
Wow...thank you, I really appreciate that.
My skid is about rusted in half, tank tuck is on my to do list
I don't miss vehicles from the mid-west like Iowa where I am from for that reason.
Thumbs up for the scribed line
I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
I have an 89L LPG tank in the spare tyre space. + the original fuel tank... = many, many miles of autonomy :)
Hell yeah ya thought of everything lolz should of known
Martin,
what is that EVAP unit you removed on the driver bumper side called?
i have a secondary tank in my spare wheel well, but am considering removing it and doing a tuck and getting a after market tank to take up that extra head room, thanks Martin this vid is very helpful to me and has made me almost certain i want a tuck.
Sounds great!
Awesome video! I love how clean of a job you do on your projects. Can't wait for part 2
Thank you, coming soon!
I did on my wj sub tank with 50liter and put a spare tire carrier and close the circle in the trank abaut 15 year ago
Hello just saw your video
I live in Pahrump
And I just took possession of a 02 grand Cherokee
With the gas tank out for a bad fuel pump
But the replacement they acquired looks the same but does not fit
It seems like it’s to big for the whole
It does push down to the correct high but will not fit in hole the gasket seems to thick or the dia of the head is to big
Have you heard of this before
And how often are you changing these pumps
Install the gasket 1st in the hole of the tank, then slide the fuel pump assembly into the hole.
Had an 04 and gave the step daughter the jeep and she did nothing but beat that thing it had 330k miles good running straight 6 hard shifting transmission 4wd worked great still. She came home one day and I could hear something coming down the road it was her and she was dragging the gas tank behind her!! 😑😬... I mean what a mess idk how the hell she didn’t blow up, it had a thin steel bracket that rusted out that held the plastic tank up in there. So with ratchet straps I got it back up in there n it even kinda raised it.
she was lucky that it didn't catch fire, the same thing happened to me when I was 17 with my 59 Ford Custom 300 with a full tank and gas all over the highway I pulled over as fast as I could.
This is the biggest hack job ever!!!!!! Hahahahahahaha just kidding Martin. Man you are a awesome. How are the long tube headers holding that you installed a few years back?
Thank you, the headers are holding up great they almost look just as good as the day I installed them.
Absolute amazing work Martin! Wish I knew how to weld and had a garage so i could attempt this. I envy you lol. This is how they should of came from factory. Good job!
Thanks 👍
This is super cool but prob far to involved for the adverage person to attempt.
On minute 13:04 how much did u cut on the fueler hose side it look more then a inch and u dont say how much beside just that the video is awesome
Im going to to this to increase fuel capacity! Excellent video!
Would you build a custom fuel cell to increase fuel capacity?
@@martinbuilt I could see someone cutting two stock tanks up and plastic welding them together to make a bigger one
HUUH THE FOXBODY MUSTANGS 1979-1993 HAD THE TIRE MOUNTED ABOVE THE FUEL TANK IN THE TRUNK AS WELL AND NEVER HEARD OF THOSE GETTING REAR ENDED AND CAUSING A FIRE OR EXPLOSION! MAYBE IT WORKED CAUSE THEY HAD THE FUEL RESET BUTTON IN THE TRUNK SO IF HIT IT WOULD SHUT THE PRESSURIZED FUEL SYSTEM DOWN. BUT ANYWAYS. THE TANKS WERE THE SAME WAY AS THE FORD PINTO AND THE 1999-2004 GRAND CHEROKEE.
Well if anything my Grand looks a whole lot better without that saggy diaper hanging down.
Thank you for watching.
You gave me all the confidence to tackle this modification. Awesome video man. Thank you. Looks amazing
Thank you, I appreciate that, you can do it!
wondering if u tried just a) flipping the spare cut out 180deg matching the factory bead rolls, b) just cutting 4 (or whatever) in from the spare cut out depth and putting back in?
that not a bad idea, other then it would eliminate any trunk space.
Only the Limited WJ Grand Cherokee came with the heavier duty gas tank skid plate. The non-Limited WJ had a much thinner gas tank skid plate.
Actually, I found a few Laredo's and other models that had a heavier skid plate. Maybe it all depends on the year.
Thank you for watching.
I always look forward to your videos you do very good explaining everything thing you do in the steps cant wait for part two
Glad you like them!
mine tank saddle dont weight shit...its all rusted out
Talk about custom fabrication. Awesome video! What state are you in? Can I send you a skid plate to fab?
Thank you. I am in Nevada. I don't have access to a beedroller anymore; my friend moved to Texas.
Incredible job Mártin...you're the best....!!!! Thanks....!!!!!!!!
Thank you Marco
I was just looking for a good video on this last week! Looks like you did a solid job
Thank you Danny, glad you liked it.
Isn’t it like 65lbs give or take... and it’s like only thing holding the tank up lolz weld err up good bud
Question. What did you use for painting your WJ? Did you spray it or did you have it professionally done?
This is still the original paint, brilliant Black Pearl.
I like your removing the bumper cover idea for access. My tank is leaking from a broken hose (I hope).I now have the kit you linked to along with push pins for reassembly coming. I'm hoping I don't have to pull the tank and can find the leak without doing so. Thanks! 😎
I'm glad to hear you find the content helpful. good luck on your finding that leak.
I can't imagine that the tank itself is leaking I would think it would either be on the fill hose or vent hose or possibly the fuel pump assembly gasket on top of the tank.
@@martinbuilt Whatever it is it's pressurized. When I first noticed it it was coming out fast. I had to haul but to get home before it ran out of fuel.
Türkiye'de adamlar lpg tankı koymak için stepneyi iptal ediyor ama olsun Amerikadan bakan bizi kıskanıyor bu gurur bize yeter eline sağlık martin dayı
in Las Vegas many of the Taxi cabs and public transportation are LP gas powered.
@@martinbuilt
In Turkey, the spare wheel is removed to put the LPG tank, most of them work with GC 4.7 LPG, Uncle Martin, your car is very nice, thank you , sorry for the translation google but that's it
I need to do this because my gas tank is literaly held up by ratchet straps. Thank you, rust!
26:22 . . . Huge amount of work to get to that Hole ! 😆
Did you end up having any measurable space between the bottom of that plate and the top of the tank or was really close?
I believe at the highest point of the fuel tank there was 3/8 of an inch space to the bottom of the plate.
Forgive me for my youthful ignorance why didn't you cut the wheel well fush to the floor??
I would do that for a rock crawler and the reason I didn't is then you would have to build a dog house that would be exposed when you lift the back hatch for the fuel inlet hose and I wanted to make the vehicle look totally stock.
Nice and thorough good video I wish I hang all of that equipment thanks martin
Thank you I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful. ☺️
Loved the tummy tank tuck job martin,i like urs better, than ones ive seen on other sites as well.yours was thought out more.plus that access plate idea was epic!!!!i almost spit up my cold snack when u injected humor of no going back now.while looking up thru floor.was thinking same thought, cool!!was curious those led lights on bumper how did u connect.i bought one of those bar type that fits on most trucks!!!think its just a bit to thick to fit in but like the third brake light setup you have.oh and im still wanting to know is there anyway we can make transmission dip stick more secure in tube.you didnt get back to me about that????snookie pa.2002wj owner 4.7ho
Thank you, Allen, Glad you enjoyed the video. The 3rd brake light is a LED stripe that can be purchased in 5 meter length and then cut. Hooked it to the brake light on the right side. What is the problem with the transmission dip stick, I haven't heard of any problem with that.
@@martinbuilt just hangs in there on mine real sloppy like almost like it wont seat properly.maybe too long!!!was thinking getting one of those truckers rubber twist plugs caps and welding on end to securly fit in the tube???snookie pa.
Nice work sir and did a great job for fuel tank going up
Thank you I appreciate that I'm glad you liked it.
i recently dropped the tank on a 03 overland. i was able to pop all wire connections and lines before i took the tank down. i took them off the fuel filter and left the lines on the tank side. the main reason was i able to jump the pump from the connector to pump the fuel out.
Where did you get the LED strip and how'd you install?
Got it from Amazon amzn.to/3eVJFup
Just cut to length and then splice into either the brake or tail light wiring.
Welder sounds pretty good. You got it cranked on battle ship steel mode.
Thanks, it's a Miller 212 got it set on Auto. That seemed to work well.
can't wait for part 2...im on pins and needles here!
Lol...yeah I bet, you're co-starring.
How did you get your Nevada plate like that ? 😂 mine is regular
That's the Golden Knights plate, I was so happy when they came out with that goes well with the black vehicle but there's no way I'm putting a Raiders plate on my vehicle.😆
Pintos didnt have a solid square pipe hitch hanging in back though.
no, they could have use one, that was Jeeps answer to reducing the possibility of a fire from a rear impact.
Your videos have been getting better and better everytime, love it
Happy to hear that!
Dude... This WJ is clean looks really nice i have a few ideas for mine
Thank you, glad I could help.
It's like a soggy diaper
Sir Martin. He is a master of WJ.
Thank you, Roberto I appreciate that.
I'd love to do this mod, but... The spare well is where my 2 optima yellow tops and 2000 watt inverter live. 😢
Hello if I brought you my Jeep can you do your job on mine too because you have a experience and tools need
Sry I always talk to the vidyaos, I’m that guy that always replies to the camera
Martin,I noticed you have a Iowa plate on your wall. Are you originally from there?
Hi Dan, yes I'm from Iowa born and raised moved out here to Southern Nevada in 93 been here ever since.
Ok,nice I'm in southern Illinois. ...
Ohh what the crap you gave the answer anyways lolz 😂 hahaha
That's exactly what I don't like on my 01 GC. The gas tank is mounted so low to the ground. Wish I could do this to mine. Just wanted to ask you, have you ever used a Superchips tuner on a 01 GC 4.7 non HO before? Thinking about buying one to boost the HP a little and to eliminate the speed limiter too. Not that I plan to drive over a 100 mph though. Thanks Martin.
I have the Superchips Traildash 2, I love the gauge package and some of the bells and whistles it comes with but I can't tell any difference in performance.
Top tip... after you have the tank lowered cut a hole in spare tire well to access top of tank. Work smarter not harder.
lol...I did that
@@martinbuilt i saw that later in the video, I was referring to when you were unhooking the fuel pump. I cut the bed of my step fathers ram so i could service the fuel pump
Yeah dude! I ain’t finished watching it! But that’s the next project on my WJ after I get done getting my front Dana 30 back in! And the 242 transfer case in replacing the np 247. Appreciate your videos! Now back to learning what you are teaching! Thanks Martin!
That's on my list as well, been looking for a 242HD.
Great Video Matin! Paul from Reno.
Glad you enjoyed it
I thought the WJ had rear drum brakes. Did your come like that or did you do a conversion?
all WJ came with 4 wheel disc brakes.
@@martinbuilt Thank you.
Access panel to the fuel pump incase ever need to be?
This is the best looking model of grand cherokees
I couldn't agree more.😊👍
Excellent work buddy. Thx.
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it. 👍
My tank is so rusted I’m afraid to even touch it
I understand. I am from Iowa and know all about rusty vehicles. I just love vehicles from the southwest.
If you could get a new skid plate I would think the wheel well might not be rusted too bad.
Great video, thanks for taking the time! This just seemed like such a horrible job I've been putting it off, but now ima gonna dive right innext weekend. Something for future videos that would be nice would be if you could show these odd & random connectors after you get them off, how they are removed and replaced etc...etc... Thanks again!
Glad I could help!
I had been wanted to do these for at least 2 years
Awesome!!!!!!from Cleveland, Ohio
Thank you, I appreciate that.
Thank you for this video. I've been wanting to do this to my wj for a long time just didn't know how to start.
Keep up the good work
And love the street wj😍😍
Thank you Tim glad I could help
hi i am in the middle of doing mine like this but don't have a roller will a thicker piece of metel work for plate?
A thicker plate will reduce the drum effect but only a little. You could use 3/8 angle iron and weld an X to the bottom of the plate would reinforce the plate.
@@martinbuilt thank you your videos are helping me make m my wj into a offraod beast keep up the owsmoe work
What do you do with the spare wheel Martin?
It's sitting on a shelf inside my shop. I just carry a small plug-in air compressor.
I’ve found when you slide the red tabs to the middle, then they come off.
That space under the floor cover would be a great place to stow some tools and stuff. Slick job.
Thank you, yes it works out great for things like that.
Thank you so much .
Tank tuck done 🖐️.
You are very welcome. 🙂
After your done tucking that fuel tank i think you need to do a tuck on that license plate and try to hide it aswell 😉 Lets go Pens! 🐧
On a serious note beautiful WJ man I hope that one day I can get mine looking as good as yours does! Got yourself a subscriber.
Thank you, Jon
You are a smart guy, good job. Well thought out.
Thank you appreciate that.
It is one of my favorite modes I've done so far.
To bad in inspection state cutting the cover is illegal..i did a repair on mine and got rejected..
I don't even know how they would know that you cut the cover especially the way I did it when I was done you wouldn't recognize it from Factory unless you were really familiar with the Jeep WJ
Martin, the lip that bolts to the frame rusted out so bad , I put a patch panel..they said" thats not factory welds, which means it was tampered with" got a rejected sticker that year.. have another used cover now, but having same rust out issue.. I like this idea of moving tank though, wasnt trying to rip up the video..I watch several of your repairs..keep them coming
How do i get rid of my evap system or hide it better???
And personally am glad it is where it is because on the earlier model Grand Cherokees it was under the hood and I don't much care for that because I have been trying to clean up the engine Bay by doing wire tucks and relocating the battery and power distribution center.
Know if you Are doing a fuel tank tuck You could relocate it to the top of the fuel tank and put a plate across the tire well
Can you send measurements of iron cutting
the cover is 32" in diameter
Yesss been wanting this from you for years 😂
better late then never...lol should have part 2 out on Friday
@@martinbuilt can't wait. Wanted to do this for some time but I was too scared I'd mess up. Tg for your videos
Where's my sub going to go then?!!?!
Somewhere else 😆
Hello Martin thanks for the beautiful Video God blessed u so much for helping people's around the world question Martin where I can find a cowl hood like someone u had in ur jeep
Thank you, if you are referring to the hood scoop on the 04 JGC, I got that from
MMD 71323-00 hood scoop that I purchased from www.americanmuscle.com for 109.99 free shipping. Thank you for watching.
Nice job Martin. That plasma cutter sure came in handy. Are you going out to Rick's place for the bead rolling?
Yeah that plasma cutter does a great job. Yep went out to Rick's and got it done. Part 2 will start at place bead rolling that metal.
You do a great job martin. . Salute!
Thank you. I appreciate that. And thank you for watching. 🙂
My tank skid was riddled with rust and had to be replaced and the replacement wasn't that great either in Northern MN. I'm quite jealous of how clean that one is!
Yeah I'm originally from Iowa and I know what you're talking about. Next time you're shopping for a Jeep make your way out to Las Vegas and they'll look just as clean as this one
Respect ! Very nice job !!!
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it 👍 😊
Great video....getting ready to install a new skid plate on a 04, and this has been extremely helpful
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
And by far the best tuck video on RUclips! Are you going through the unibody with the filler hose?!?!?
Thank you Scott, I appreciate that, yeah I'm going through the frame with the fill hose.
Do I plan on doing this to my WJ? No. Did I watch the whole thing? Absolutely. Really cool mod.
Thank you i'm glad you like that.
And thank you for watching the whole thing.😊
