    Lyrics:
My Honey Brown, lovely barefooted clown
as sweet and wild as honeysuckle vine
Now children would follow everyplace you would go
Thrill and delight to your one woman show
    How foolish and vain
to think that I could change
    a girl who's heart
    was born for the stage
Honey Brown, we were world's apart
I knew it from the start
    That's why I stepped aside
    and let you go free
    Cause Honey Brown,
    my love was so deep
I used to laugh at your movie magazines
You vowed one day you'd be on the screen
I'd fight in the streets when folks tried to say
You'd love any man who promised you fame
And then he came in his big shiny car
took your love from me and broke my heart
Honey Brown, through your tears you're gonna find,
life can be cruel and so unkind
So, Honey Brown, don't let his masquerade
make a streetcorner, make a streetcorner, your stage.
Ooooh, Don't let him do it Don't let him do it Ooooh Honey, ooooh
    How foolish and vain
to think that I could change
A girl who's heart was born for the stage
    Honey Brown, Girl can'tcha see,
I'll always love ya and wan'tcha here with me.
Honey Brown, I'll be around You're gonna need me
when the tears come down Ooooh Honey, Ooooh Honey

He was the beginning of true smooth tenor... Taught smokey an all after him... Philip bailey owes him the world. Nobody sung this style until Eddie came along... People thought he was a girl... He was 19yrs old at the time we got to taste his flavor... Every tenor song lk,e the Dells tenor singer... Eddie was an eye opener... If you listen to Michael Jackson you're hear where Michael used Eddie kendrick screams... So did Diana Ross... He's equal in singing to Sam Cooke, Stevie wonder... Melvin Franklin ... These are elect singers... All had different styles but they're the four best... Never been a base lime Melvin never been a note bringer like Sam... And there shall never be another Stevie... He's the only person that could sing an Eddie song... "I'm gonna make you love me" you need to check it out with Diana... The four horseman...

There's tenors that get higher but they never had the swag Eddie play on a falsetto on tenor and he sounds like a man singing falsetto not a girl like some others.

Okay, I am a premier Temptations historian, and have been listening to the group since I was a toddler, when the "Classic Five" lineup was still together. Eddie Kendricks influenced an entire generation of high tenors and imitators with his distinct gospel flavored style, and smooth confidence. He set the bar high for first tenor falsettos. I say this as a true Temptations, and Eddie Kendricks fan. However, while comparing, and contrasting Eddies influence on other noted high tenors, we have to be accurate with the facts. Before Eddie, there were plenty of other high tenor falsettos. The Temptations came along after the 1950s "Doo Wop" era, which included several high tenors. However, those tenors were not all thrust into the lead singer spotlight, but sang mostly background harmony, because that was the style of that genre. But there were standout tenors, like Clyde Mcphatter of the drifters. Back in those days a group usually featured only one lead singer, ususlly a tenor or a soulful baritone. What distinguished the Temptations from that format was that they created a new mold. They were a group that had it all. They featured a high tenor falsetto, second tenors, a baritone, and a bass singer, who all could sing dynamic lead solos. Also the guys were great dancers and showman. Now, back to my point. There was another vocal group, called the Van Dykes, who recorded a song "You Need Confidence" featuring a dynamite falsetto lead. Also don't forget about Curtis Mayfield, of the Impressions. After their lead singer, baritone, Jerry Butler went solo, Curtis stepped into the spotlight with his high soaring tenor, and poetic songwriting. The Dells also featured their own high tenor, who was originally with the Moonglows. These groups had hits before the Temptations. Regarding Smokey Robinson, he and the Miracles were scoring hits for Motown in 1958, before The Temptations ever joined the label. Listen to their hits "Got A Job", and "Bad Girl". Smokey was already an established vocalist/songwriter, who also wrote the Temptations first hit, and many of the early B-sides in the early 60s. Also, Smokey Robinson is actually a countertenor, a range higher than a tenor. El and Bobby Debarge also are, and were countertenors. He actually sang the majority of his notes in his natural voice. So, there were many of Eddie's contemporaries, like the Delfonics, Eddie Holman, and others who, no doubt, admired Eddie, but he wasn't the first solo singer to utilize his falsetto. His influence, however, can be heard in the works of many early 70s R&B artist, including Darryl Hall, of Hall and Oates, and Ron Banks of the Dramatics. Ironically, Eddie Kendricks, himself, never considered himself a falsetto. He said, he just did what he needed to sing the notes required of him. Hope this sheds some light on the subject. Check it Out! Ciao!!!

Just to abreviate my earlier comment below: Eddie Kendricks is my favorite high tenor falsetto, but he is not the first. His singing style is born out of the tradition of Gospel and Doo Wop vocal music. Also it should be noted that Clyde McPhatter, Curtis Mayfield, and Smokey Robinson were already established recording artists, on the scene years before Eddie and the Temptations arrived at Motown. Smokey wrote many of their early songs, including their first hit in 1964. Also listen to a song by the Van Dykes called "You Need Confidence", featuring a dynamic falsetto lead singer. Check it Out! Ciao!!!

@@barbarahamlin6482 You were aware if that? Interesting. It has bern observed that the very same 1974 album from which this song hails, marks the beginning of Eddie's vocal decline. "Tell Her Love Has Felt The Need" , from the same album, seems to be the last song he recorded, reminiscent of the vocal prowess of his prime. Yes, by the mid 1970s, relatively early in Eddie's solo career, the effects of chain smoking, and possibly alcohol, began to affect Eddie's voice. While still able to reach his high notes, they began lacking the full power, and volume, and he seemed to compensate by reaching the notes by squeezing them out, sliding into the pitch with a softer, lighter attack, rather than the full on glistening punch of his younger days with the Temptations, when Eddie was untouchable. Nevertheless, there is no denying Eddie Kendricks' tremendous influence on a generation of high tenors. Check it Out! Ciao!!!
