Thank you for this video. I messed up a Tamiya Viper yesterday by using thinner to remove the panel accent wash. Took off quite a lot without much effort. Sad to say the Viper will be turned into a 10,000 hour aircraft. Lucky for me I have oil paints and just got white spirit!

Hi Hansen thanks ! ( need to update these old tutorials ) Chipping I always do first, always have, I find it easier to chip before because you can disrupt your washes and oil effects.
Hi Nicholas. The wash is dry to the touch. This is usually after 10-15 minuites. The paper towel was dry, sometimes if the leftover wash is being stubborn I use a cotton bud with just some thinners ( hardly a drop) and use that
hey, maybe i missed it but would this products works on acrylic paint? and if so and i just have a model painted by acrylic, should i do something before applying the wash?
@@reefta hello ! I highly reccomend alclad aquagloss for the gloss. Very good product. And winsor and newton galeria Matt varnish for the final coat. Both are very good and I have been using them for a while. Perfect for tanks and aircraft
In oil and watercolour painting, black is often avoided because its either too dark, or a dead colour. Instead rich darks can be mixed from mixes like ultramarine and burnt umber, another variation is hookers green and alizarin crimson but I'm not quite as fond of that one. Also by adjusting the amount of blue and brown you can err towards different effects. More brown is more mucky. More blue is a bit more oily. And also thinning with varying amounts of thinner can give you loads of different tones. It's a pretty versatile mix and I used to use it all the time. At the moment I'm obsessed with abteilung Sepia.

Just trying out this technique on some of 1/72s that are near completion. Do you let the oil wash dry for a day or remove immediately? Do you have some tips on exhaust and gun stain trails too?
Hi Ben ! Check out my latest video on washes its a lot more comprehensive :) with oils I always leave it 15-20mins, enough to let the thinner evaporate, then just be gentle when removing . Exhaust stains really depend on the aircraft and fuel mixture, but a good place to start is a lightened black /brown mix with the airbrish or oils if you're feeling confident, with oils you can blend and feather them nicely.
I'm not a big advocate of the floor stuff unfortunately, I wouldn't like to say what will help. A low odour thinner ( I'd reccomend vms universal weathering carrier light ) would be safer than a white spirit, especially the light version as it isn't as hot as others.
hi what colors do you use here for the wash? and what would you recommend for enamel colors on a 1/35 jagdpanther? i dont know what i wanna use to get a good dark color but i dont want it to be too dark and unnatural. thanks in advance
When I did this the wash was applied to a satin or gloss surface. These days I don't bother with a gloss. It can make it slightly harder to control but less layers is is win in my book. I have a video. "The ultimate guide to washes" that is much more effective at showing the process than this older video.
Hi! I tried a Vallejo black wash and I put it on there and wiped it away but I was taking away my paint! I did 2 coats of tamiya clear gloss before. My question is did u spray the clear gloss or painted?
Hi there. For best results you need a wash product that is different from your base coats. Acrylic paint and gloss works best with oils or something like an A.K panel liner. The benefit of these products is that they dry very slowly, unlike acrylic, giving you time to manipulate the effect. Once you are happy, then you can remove the excess with white spirit or the products specific thinner, My clear coats are sprayed. I only paint small details with a brush, and something like a clear coat is a lot smoother when sprayed.

Hi there, I appreciate this is an old video but help would be appreciated :) I try do this, I use a clear coat to seel my paint etc and then leave the wash to dry, but when I try to wipe it off it’s very stubborn and doesn’t really do much, but when I wipe it off using a little dab of thinners it removes everything and sometimes gets through my gloss coat even know its acrylic. I can’t seem to get a balance it seems to be all or nothing. Any tips on what I’m doing wrong or any help in general would be great. Thanks
Hi there ! First off thanks for commenting! I hope I can help. What acrylic gloss are you using ? And how heavily are you applying it ? How long do you leave the oil wash to dry? When I remove mine its usually when the thinner has just dried, way before the paint has cured. I find that if you spray the varnish too thin you may find it seeping through in areas, I had trouble especially using AK acrylics as this ended up lifting the paint, and if it's too thick you can turn panel lines into shallow depressions more like a shallow U shape, making the oil less likely to stay put . I tend to spray a mist coat of aquagloss for "bite" and then a heavier layer and that's usually enough. Looking forward to your reply James
lpj models thanks for the reply James, I’m using humbrol clear coat at the moment. I hand paint my models so it’s hard to say how much clear coat I’m putting on but it’s certainly not a large amount. In terms of drying time if I leave it for 5 minutes and comeback I seem to take all the wash off, including in the panel lines, however if I were to leave it to properly dry the paint then becomes to stubborn. It’s hard to say, I’m not sure if my paint to thinner ratio is wrong but as I mentioned early it’s hard to get a good balance it seems. Hope this helps narrow it down and thanks again :)

Hi Ipj models, how long do you leave the wash on the model before wiping off. I tried this technique on a wildfire and buggered it right up. The oil paint just won't wipe off.
Hi Tony literally only untill the white spirit had evaporated, 5 mins, it needs to be over a decent acrylic gloss/satin finish to make sure it doesn't get absorbed into the finish as well, good luck !

@@billyredtail if it's the humbrol acrylic clear you'll be ok but I would test it first. Enamel/oil wash over enamel varnish will end in disappointment. As long as the varnish is acrylic ( most reliable for me is alclad Aquagloss) you'll be ok. Please test it first though.
I was never a big fan of putting a wash on aircraft. I find it over exaggerates the panel lines. In scale the panel lines should not look like they are cm's apart. I find you can weather a plane other ways. Armor on the other hand is a different story.

I love the videos...but hate the treacle guitar over the top...really annoying when all you want is the narrative to explain the techniques...A little like being on hold on the phone and having to listen to someone elses record collection...Arggghhh...Apart from that, brilliant videos!

Yes over acrylic is best. Use a clear acrylic varnish to protect the surface even more as well. Gloss is best

Why did you choose blue and brown, instead of black and brown? Was it to simulate the blue from ‘the sky’ reflection? Or am I overthinking this?

If you use future clear as a gloss coat, I find the thinned oil can’t be wiped off. It takes the surface off too. Will white spirit prevent this?

Thanks ! I used a mix of burnt umber and French ultramarine oils, for a jadpanther a grey brown would be my colour of choice.

So when done painting I gloss it install the decals do a wash on it and weathering then when done I can do a Matt finish?

Use a tiny bit of thinner on a cotton bud and tactically remove the streaks. That's what I'd do.
I couldnt wipe it off but my clear coat had like an orange peel texture what can i do to avoid that?
Hi Mat an orange peel texture is usually caused when paint starts to dry before it levels, try spraying closer, or using a bit more thinner.
