    SpaceRex, I am trying to sync my desktop and laptop to Lightroom catalogs that will share the same RAW folders. I have successfully synced my catalogs via Synology Drive, but where to I store my RAW files for synced access? Do I need to set up an SMB share on my remote laptop to do that? Do you have a tutorial on that? My only option now is to store my RAW files in Teams, which means they are being indexed and previewed. Where should I store my RAW files for a more efficient NAS access

    I have an issue with the Synology recycle bin on a Mac. When I delete a file with the file becomes hidden in finder and the file extension is deleted. It also has a "." at the beginning. An example is ".smbdeleteAAAc8a50f". It has no extension. If I accidentally delete a file and I have say 50 files in the recycle bin I have to manually rename the extension then guess which one was the one I wanted to restore or individually restore each file. If I restore in bulk it creates a zip file int he downloads folder and the names are still hidden. Any suggestions on how to fix this issue?

    • @WalrusRiderEntertainment
      @WalrusRiderEntertainment 2 года назад

      Just an update. If I connect using AFP it will keep the file name intact. As you recommend not to use AFP and it is, in fact, being passed out, is there a workaround within SMB for this issue? I also prefer SMB as moving files between folders is pretty much instantaneous whereas with AFP it takes forever..
      Update 2 - Small file size SMB files seem to keep filename intact. Larger ones don't. Will experiment to find the file size cut off. 2GB perhaps ..
      Update 3 - Noticing that the issue is only happening when I am deleting a file already open in another program (my video editor in Windows 11 in Parallels) so I think it could be a file permission issue between Mac and SMB

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  2 года назад

      So this is actually a issue with SMB and macOS. The .smbdelete file is used to remove the file. Pretty much what has to happen is just wait a little while and it will work

      If you have the mapped the shared folder as a networkdrive like Will showed in this Video then you have full acces depending on your accountpermissions (read,write or both) on the shared folder. So yes, with the correct permissions you can work directly from NAS open,modify and save your dwg file :)

  • @nicobecerra5847
    @nicobecerra5847 2 года назад

    This may be an obvious question, but in the video you "drag and drop" the file to your desktop which (my understanding) means you crated a copy of that file on your local computer. My question is if you map a network drive to your shared folder on the NAS, can you read and write those files directly from the NAS? Example: I have a MS Word document that I've stored in a share, I map the network drive to that share, now I want to open that Word documents in MS Word. Do I have to create a local copy to read/write that file? OR (with the correct permissions) can I just read/write the document by opening it directly on the NAS (from the shared mapped drive)? I do this currently with my WD MyCloud NAS but they are discontinuing support. Hoping I can do the same with Synology as an alternative now that I need something different.

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  2 года назад

      Hi, yes you can do this! opening the file when it is on the NAS will act like a shared folder and any save will save to the NAS

    @spacerexwill I have an issue that Drives' letters are different for 1. in network connection 2. VPN connection. Is there a way to unify it? I could not find a way to make the same drive work when I am IN and OUT of network. This is important to me so, when I have a 'windows path' it can work when I am IN and OUT of network. Right now I have all drives duplicated:( Thank you!

    Hello sir. Random question for you. Hoping you see this. What's your experience copying a set of folders from a windows server to a Synology NAS and keeping the NTFS permissions?
    I'm considering moving my company's 12tb fileserver to a rackstation. While I kept most permissions pretty general, there are quite a few little changes here and there over the years I don't want to re-create.

    1. For some files I hat a "The path of the destination file is too long" basically it didn't like that my file name had too many characters. Is there a way to configure NAS to accept the files despite the amount of characters?
    2. Is there a video instruction on how to access this files remotely for other users outside of LAN over the internet securely in a same way using their desktop (similar to the way it's done on dropbox)?

    I followed the steps exactly on your video setting up OpenVPN which worked, but mapping the drive on a remote laptop on the VPN and entering \\\ in the folder box (as I did on my local computer) resulted in a failed connection. For it to work I had to replace with my static IP address that I manually set for my NAS. Just thought I'd share my experience and see if you had thoughts on why that was so? Also I was unable to get Synology Assistant to map the drive for me - it would say it successfully mapped but would not show up on my file explorer. Still trying to understand why all of the steps were performed, thanks so much for your videos.

    • @SpaceRexWill

      So the server name uses what's called a local resolver that will only work when you are on your local network. OpenVPN (and most other VPNs) do not operate fully on layer 2 (equivalent of plugging into another network switch) so can't resolve .local domains.

    Hey SpaceRex, I have an issue with my synology that's very strange and thought you may have the answer. I've mapped my synology 1819 to windows 10. It worked fine for two years transfering large files. I recently got a new router. Now, transfers of small files still work. But if I transfer anything over 500mb, the transfer slows down to 0 bytes a second. Then I get "error 0x8007003b" and the window crashes. I can still access the files just fine, but I can't add anything to the storage volume anymore :( Please lmk if you have any guidance on how to fix it, thanks!

      @@SpaceRexWill I followed along with your jumbo frames video and matched the settings. Unfortunately, it still crashes the file window when i transfer a file over 50mb or so. It's bizzare, it will start normal, transfer about 1%, then go to zero. The volume is still has plenty of free space and says it's healthy. It still works fine on quickconnect, but I have to restart the computer for the windows file explorer connection to work again. Any ideas? Thank you for your help

    Hey SpaceRex, suddenly this morning when I started up my PC I was unable to get access via my drive mapping in File Explorer (it was working just fine previously). I used the straightforward process that you outlined above (after disconnecting the previous mapping) and no luck at all. Any suggestions on what might be wrong?! Btw, my DiskStation is showing up on the network and I can get into DSM with no problems. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

      @@SpaceRexWill Thanks so much for this great tutorial! I seem to be having a strange problem similar to this one, however. One profile can see and access all mapped drives on the NAS with no problem. On another profile on the same PC, while Synology Assistant sees the NAS, and I can connect to it, sign into DSM, and explore folders on the NAS within DSM, the NAS refuses to show up in File Explorer, under Network. I used your technique for mapping drives, and Windows says it cannot find the NAS. Alternatively, when I use Synology Assistant to map a network drive I get the same result -- it times out while trying to connect. Any suggestions for why one profile on the PC can access mapped NAS drives with no problem, while another profile on the same PC cannot "see" the NAS? FWIW, my NAS is set to use a static IP on my network. Thanks very much for your help!

    I read all the comments to date to make sure this hasn't been addressed--it hasn't. I'm using a DS 1522+ and Windows 11 over SMB. Going through 'Network' I can see all the shares + home on the NAS, and access the contents of the shares (video, books). I can't see the directory for 'home', it is constantly "waiting...". My NAS user account is read-only for the shared directories. If possible I would like to access my NAS home directory on my Windows desktop. It seems like perhaps a permissions issue, but I'm not seeing where to change that for 'home'.

      Ah yes. So messing with the homes folder permissions can often have really weird effects on mapping the home folder properly
